Well personally I've never liked Jim Sterling. He's always been this arrogant snob preaching SJW rhetoric. Unfortunately a lot of people in the game industry do take him serious.

It should work now. No, this one is called The Cuphead Elitists Episode. But that video you're referring to sounds equally cringy. This one is an obnoxious video basically calling for the dumbing down of games for inclusion sake. It's pretty much as anti-gamer as you can get. Sargon did a reply to Jim and other game journos who can't game and think that is somehow okay:

I agree with most of what he says, but Jesus tapdancing Christ, leave male gamers be or better yet, let's respect the whims of the developers instead of them having to cover up the tiniest bit of cleavage just to cater to a vocal minority who are never satisfied.
No men shaming this time but shaming gamers who have the crazy opinion that games should be.... a challenge. The embed should be working now. Check it out. It's quite bizarre how low Jim has sunk. Here's the direct link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QidBCKYVCMA

Why would a guy with a medieval helmet be cringy and anti-gamer? It's not about how Jim looks, it's about how he acts, it's about his message. The ridiculous outfit is just the cherry on top that reflects his obnoxious personality.

So how about them lootboxes huh? Turns out Disney wasn't really up to speed about them and doesn't like to have their brand associated with gambling. Refering to the Battlefront 2 lootboxes system which is disabled for now, Belgian, Dutch and French gambling commissions are also investigating if lootboxes are to be considered an (online) form of gambling:

    http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/20...ing-commission

    interesting development.

Appearantly the Belgian gambling commission has decided that buying loot boxes where you don't know the outcome (contents) can be considered gambling. Looks like the Justice secretary wants a ban on such loot boxes and will take it to Europe.

    [edit]

Hawaii not too happy about those boxes either, that video is just brutal:

"This game is a Star Wars-themed online casino designed to lure kids into spending money; it's a trap. This is something we need to address to ensure that particularly kids who are underage, who are not psychologically and emotionally mature enough to be able to gamble - which is why gambling is prohibited under 21 - are protected from being trapped into these cycles which have compelled many folks to spend thousands of dollars in gaming fees online."

I've posted about Hellblade: Senua's sacrifice before, it was developed by a small team and their project/goal was to show that there is a space for studios aside from AAA yet still delivering quality.

Their latest dev diary shows that they have achieved their selling goal, they have broke even faster than expected and are now about half a million units sold on PS4 and PC. Really glad to see that a game with such a daring theme, mental health, and pulling it off in a respectful manner is getting enough sales and praise

It has been 3 months since the launch of Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice and today we are happy to be sharing the final development diary in our 30 video series. In the diary we discuss how the Hellblade Independent AAA approach has turned from experiment into proven model, detailing key numbers from Hellblade’s launch:

    • Over 75k pre-orders across PC and PS4 before launch.
    • 250K units sold in the first week at $29.99.
    • Over $13m in revenue generated in 3 months.
    • 500k units sold in 3 months, which puts the project beyond breakeven and into profit. Our prediction was to be at this point in 6 months from release.
    • Development took 3 years and with an average team size of 20.
    • Game sold as digital-only.
    • About half the sales were on PC.

Some words from Tameem Antoniades, Co-founder and Chief Creative Ninja, on the success of Hellblade:

"The escalating stakes in the AAA retail publishing model has killed off countless independent studios like us, many smaller publishers, and is now straining even the largest of publishers. This isn't survival of the fittest but a routing of the creative base upon which this industry was built.

The future isn't written and we don't believe that the writing is on the wall. AAA will always exist but we need strong alternatives as well.

Three years ago we announced our intention to find a way to do our best work outside of the AAA retail model and have openly documented the journey in our thirty development diaries.

The final step is to share our commercial model and digital sales data for the benefit of other developers. The more data we have for alternative business models, the more developers can take informed commercial and creative risks. For the benefit of our beloved medium, we'd like to encourage other developers to share their own data as well wherever possible.

Thank you to everyone who has supported us and made Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice a commercial and creative success."

LOL, couldn't have said it any better myself.

Glad to see this P2W system blowing up like it has. I don't get the logic behind EA-and, ironically, some people on other forums I frequent-saying it isn't gambling because you're guaranteed to win something. By that logic, if slot machines started giving you stickers whenever you lost, it would no longer be gambling.

    OR, here's a good one:

If casinos started handing out claw machine tokens with a 1/12 chance of winning more chips every time you lost in poker: no longer gambling, casinos can start luring kids to the poker table.

Angry Joe just did an Angry Review of BF II, and he said he spent $40 on loot boxes and got nothing but useless items. I wouldn't call getting nothing but dance emotes and crafting parts a worthwhile return for $40, especially with the presence of star cards that actually enhance your character. I believe I speak for everyone when I say these things aren't exactly going to do a whole lot of good against players that have "earned" stuff like invincibility while flying, rare weapons, shields, explosives, etc., etc. from these loot boxes.

Its just greed. They know SW is a money making franchise and they are trying to screw as much money as possible from the fans. A great SW game would easily turn a handsome profit without this s**t.

I've finished binge watching Marvel's The Punisher this weekend and damn, I LOVED IT! Brilliant series! I've enjoyed all of Marvel's Netflix shows, but this one really surpassed all my expectations! Jon Bernthal is simply phenomenal as Frank Castle.

And speaking of Marvel, the Avengers Infinity War trailer is here:

lol Star Citizen is selling land plots or "beacons" now aside from some ships that don't exist in game yet you can now buy land while there is no mechanics about that planned, implemented or whatever yet.

Oh you don't have to buy it of course it is to further fund "the game" that has - according to them - raised 168 million already. And is already years late from release.

    http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/20...d-for-up-to-96

This is going to be an ARG right, who still gives these people money?

  13. #27038
^LOL, how does a $168 mil game look this cheap and buggy? TReboot was allegedly made on a $100 mil budget (or so I've heard), all paid for up front, which is crazy even for a modern-day AAA game, and it turned out fantastic as we all very much know.

Speaking of which, did anyone manage to catch the CD charity marathon Twitch feed? I watched part of it last night, it was great to see a bunch of the CD staff joking around, embarrassing themselves and actually enjoying themselves doing it while playing various TR games (I believe they played Legacy of Kain as well). And of course Meags being her usual funny, playful self, always a pleasure to watch.

Here it is for anyone who hasn't seen it yet. These guys really do have a strong sense of pride (and humor ), especially Meagan. That makeup wheel spin segment was priceless.

Looks like it will be game over for Star Citizen, they are being sued by CryTek of which they licensed the engine for breach of contract on multiple counts. CryTek being represented by the big scary law firm that won the Zenimax vs Occulus Rift case that resulted in $ 500 million awarded by jury.

    https://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/...f_contract.php

Hmm the defence of CIG seems sketchy, part of the game engine license is that they aren't allowed to switch engines (and they are being sued for this among other things) and they basically just sent out a statement saying they switched engines

Rumours are there are two more lawsuits on the way.

It's official folks, Disney acquires 20th Century Fox, X-Men and Fantastic Four Join MCU.

Awesome news! We may finally get a good F4 movie, a proper iteration of Doom and Galactus and an X-Men/Avengers crossover. The possibilities of how they'll unite the franchises are endless. Imagine Doom and Magneto in the same movie, or Spidey and Deadpool together, or better yet, all the LOL moments between Rocket and Deadpool. No doubt it'd be great to watch, we all know how much Rocket hates being called a raccoon.

    EW NO.

The X-Men universe is doing perfectly fine on it's own - Nobody wants (even more) watered down X-Men storylines because they're being overshadowed by the Lamevengers universe

I finally saw The Last Jedi over the Christmas break and thought it was really good. While I understand people's frustrations with the direction it took the series in moving forward, I still wound up really enjoying it. There's definitely some things I would've changed without delving into spoilers, but all-in-all, an entertaining movie. The Luke scene at the end was freaking epic.

And on that note, I also got Battlefront II for Christmas and I must say, as much as I detest the gambling, err, I mean pay-to-win, *cough* *hack* microtransaction-based loot box system EA tried to implement, the game itself is loads of fun. I've been playing the hell out of it the last few days, I'm sorely trying to get good enough to rack up enough points for Darth Vader.

And yes, I rightfully called it for what it is: effing gambling. These loot boxes don't guarantee you'll get anything that'll help you in any way, I can certainly attest from the earned loot boxes I've gotten thus far as can Angry Joe in his review (and he spent real money before they took em down to boot). Spending real money on random items that can make or break your whole gaming experience (most likely break it unless you're willing to dish out hundreds or even thousands of dollars) sure sounds like gambling to me.

^I saw The Last Jedi this past Tuesday and I LOVED EVERY SECOND OF IT!!! Definitely one of the BEST Star Wars films, if not the best.
From the characters and cast, to the stunning cinematography and effects - Rian Johnson's visual direction is just brilliant; the music, that opening scene, everything in Crait, LAURA DERN!, the return of Luke Skywalker, Carrie Fisher's final performance as Leia, the story subverting all my expectations and taking me on an exhilarating ride from start to finish. I LOVED IT!!!
