Nosgoth Launcher - Bringing blood loving gamers together, all around the globe

    Denizens of Nosgoth,

While our game teams at Psyonix and Square Enix Montreal continue to crush bugs and bring new updates to the game, we’ve had a team at Square Enix London developing a new platform upon which Nosgoth will grow. Introducing the Nosgoth Launcher.

    A New Platform? Why?
Good question! With the Nosgoth launcher, we’re looking to achieve a few things:

    • Flexibility – Choose How You Play
    • Smaller Game Updates
    • Improved communication – Especially for languages other than English
    • Increased Design Flexibility

Flexibility – Choose How You Play

Nosgoth currently runs on one platform – Steam. Plenty of PC gamers around Europe and North America are happy with that as they already use Steam to play other games. That’s not going to change, we love offering Nosgoth on Steam and it’s here to stay.

However, we want to provide more choice when it comes to HOW people play Nosgoth. This applies to regular PC gamers, as well as gaming portals around the world. These portals are looking to bring Nosgoth to new players in their regions; in some cases, Steam isn’t necessarily as popular there.

Eventually, you will have the option to run Nosgoth via a standalone launcher that doesn’t require Steam whatsoever. This increased flexibility allows us to introduce many more gamers around the globe to Nosgoth, which will lead to a larger playerbase and improved matchmaking results.

But we’re getting ahead of ourselves, let’s look at what else we’re looking to do with the launcher first.

    Smaller Game Updates
Steam and Unreal Engine 3 interact in quite an odd way when delivering updates, which means that much more duplicate data is being delivered than really needs to be. This is an issue that nearly all UE3 games on Steam face. With the Nosgoth Launcher, we’ll be looking to rectify that.

The Launcher gives us more control over the data delivery pipeline, removing that weird interaction, allowing us to deliver smaller updates. We must point out that on occasion, we will still need to push out game updates that will end up being large; however update sizes will generally be smaller than they have been to date.

    Improved Communication
The Nosgoth Launcher will provide us with a window through which we can give you the latest news and info about Nosgoth. This will be particularly useful for non-English speakers as the launcher will allow us to deliver this information in more languages than is currently possible in-game. We’ll delve into more detail about the specific languages as that phase of the launcher rolls out.

A new game update has been released? You’ll have a link to the full patch notes in the launcher. A new game event has launched? We’ll let you know right in the launcher! A new item has been released in the store? We’ll let you know there.

    Multi-Phase Release
The Nosgoth Launcher will release over multiple phases, with each introducing its own set of features. As Phase 1 is nearly upon us, we’ll take a deeper look at that first. We’ll publish follow-up articles containing more information as we approach the release of each phase.
We’re currently putting the Launcher through an intensive course of testing. This is our target date for the rollout of the first phase. Should any large bugs be identified, we are happy to push the release back.

    Phase 1 – 16th December:
This release focuses on doing the basics right. There’s a lot to take into consideration when rolling out a new authentication system to potentially millions of players, and so our first release will focus primarily on nailing authentication…baby steps .

You’ll also see the first phase implementation of launcher news, which will initially be quite basic; but will give you an idea of the kind of content you can expect there.

This phase of the release will still require Steam in order to work. Oh, and yes; if you want the launcher to remember your login details so that you don’t ever have to type them again, there is an option to make that happen .

    Future Phases
We’ll go into greater depth about future release phases as we approach them, but for the time being, these are the key changes that you’ll see via future updates. It’s important to note that these features may be subject to change.

    Standalone Desktop Launcher
Will allow you to launch Nosgoth without Steam.

    New Friends System
To ensure that non-Steam players are still able to play with everyone else, we’ll be moving Nosgoth’s friend system over to our own purpose built environment that’s powered by the Nosgoth Launcher back-end. Initial functionality will be similar to Steam’s basic Friend functionality.

    New Avatars and Display Names
Again, as we’ll be moving away from a reliance on Steam, we’re developing a new avatar and username system. We’ve stocked the avatar library with a wide selection of Nosgoth art for you to choose from, while your Username is now entirely independent from your Steam name, allowing your display name to be perfectly tailored for blood sucking purposes.

    Smaller Game Updates
The Nosgoth Launcher will allow us to roll out smaller updates for the game, something that plenty of you have been asking about for quite some time .

    Last Chance, Link Your Account!
If you haven’t already done so, now is the time to link your Steam and Square Enix Membership accounts to earn 150 Runestones! By linking your accounts, you’ll pick up the 150 Runestone reward and have your account set up and ready to log in when the Nosgoth Launcher rolls out to Steam.

We will be saying farewell to the reward for linking accounts on the 15th of December, so make sure to do so before time runs out if you haven’t already!

    Nosgoth Launcher Early Adopter Reward
As a thank you to everyone who helps make the transition to the Launcher as smooth as possible, we’ll be granting a free chest key to everyone who logs into Nosgoth after the first few days of the Nosgoth Launcher’s release.

To be clear, the free keys will be distributed between the 16th and 21st of December. Be sure to log-in as soon as the launcher is up, so that you don’t miss out!

    FAQ On the Way
I’m sure plenty of you have a ton of questions about the introduction of the Nosgoth Launcher. We’ve got an extensive FAQ on the way, we’re just confirming some additional details. In the meantime, please feel free to ask any questions that you might have, and I’ll try to get back to you with a response as soon as I can.

Let us know what you think of the Nosgoth launcher. Will you use the standalone version of the game when it's ready, or are you a happy fan of Steam who's going to stick with that?

So this is why development of the actual game has been slow the past like SIX MONTHS. You spent your precious time designing a stand alone version of the game while people are giving up on playing because the game is a mess.

Smaller (hence faster) updates could benefit the overall progress rate of the game. And this can spread Nosgoth to a wider audience. Accentuate the negative though, yes.

And of course, let's definitely just totally skip over the part where the launcher is being worked on by a different team than the ones handling updates and bug fixes. Or did you guys think Montreal (as in Canada, where SE Montreal is working on updates), California (as in the US, where Psyonix is fixing bugs) and London (as in England, where SE London is developing a launcher) were all the same place?

The lengths people will go to complain, my god...

I'm excited for this, I can't tell you how many times I've crashed because of steam.

    We all hope so!

Good! Baby steps are still steps.

Server information (that is actually accurate) would also be much appreciated.

This somewhat troubles me. For better or worse, I like the Steam nickname system that allows you to change your display name, as well as direct profile integration and Friendlist support.
I am curious how your system will ultimately look, but I am sceptical.

I don't crash on Steam myself but it'd be nice not to have to sit and wait for it to boot up and connect every time before Nosgoth even gets to start. And the username/avatar stuff is just a nice touch.

My Steam client rarely crashes, however having said that, the amount of times Steam has just randomly disconnected and gone offline whilst I am ingame causing Nosgoth to disconnect me from the server and match I was in. I have lost count. (LAN 60mb ethernet connection via cable ISP).
So a seperate launcher that is not Steam dependent is a good idea for sure!

More frequent patches are definitely welcome too!

Being seriously concerned because of past disappointments = brutal? Okay.

My mistake, I assumed that qualified as a crash; but that has been my issue as well, that is why I love this news.

I'm also seconding the irritation over all of the people who refuse to see anything positive in every update and continuously harp and gripe about issues without an ounce of gratitude for the work that's done. It always seems to be the same people doing it, surprise surprise. :/

I'm happy to see the game is going to be getting an external means of access, though. I don't generally have problems with crashes, but if it helps make the connection to the servers more stable in any way or allows me to play if Steam isn't working, then yay! :'D Though I've grown quite fond of my Kain Seal avatar. :C The only thing I'm not happy about is that I generally hate it when a game forces you to choose from a really really narrow range of pre-approved avatars stored in their database. Part of the point of avatars is to differentiate you from everyone else and make it easier to be identified by friends in case you change your login ID, and while I understand the need for ensuring no offensive avatars are used, I've honestly seen very very few of those in Nosgoth.

Also, I was enjoying not having to really touch my Squeenix account while playing the game, but I guess if I use the non-Steam loader, then that means I'll have to start using that now, too. :/ I'm not very happy about that.

But hey, a week's worth of free chest keys just for using it? SCORE! I'm all for that!

That's the way I feel whenever I access this forum. I don't expect this place to be a den of positivity, but these forums are overwhelmingly negative. People feel entitled to slander the developers of a game that's free to play, and, in my opinion, very good. I've poured over a hundred and thirty hours into it, and I feel like I'm only scraping the surface.

Just to be clear, I've already gotten more out of Nosgoth than almost every single $60+ AAA purchase I've made in the last five years.

    How can you hate that?

Huh? I can get a free key every week?

Exactly! The longer the forums go, the more and more toxic they become and it's getting to the point where I sometimes wonder why I even keep coming back here at all. Then I remember that this is where the Devs post updates and where I can submit bugs, and try and tell myself to just not read the comment threads. :/ Oops.

I honestly have almost 800 hours in this game, and it's still enjoyable to me. I honestly don't buy $60 AAA games, but I continue to come back here and put money into this game because I really enjoy it!

Huh? I can get a free key every week?
They said that if you log on between the 16th and 21st of December, you'll get free keys! I'm assuming that's a key a day? So a week's worth of free keys!

Though I will say: A key drop for reaching 7-days logging in would be pretty awesome. Since most of us I'm sure already have all three top-level skins for the daily rewards, that would totally be a nice prize to put in to give us an incentive for playing!

Am I wrong in assuming this also means we are potentially at risk of not getting the IGN (display name) we may want as the new system means we will have a more permanent display name which will be registered on a first come first served basis?
If I am not wrong in assuming this, it should probably be highlighted a bit more to avoid additional forum grumpiness.

Seems to be that you'll get one key for logging in after the first few days of the launcher's release, those few days being any time between the 16th and 21st inclusive. So that's one shot at junk filler (boosters), or maybe something decent if you're lucky.

And I've never gotten anything top-level off the daily rewards even for the seventh day. I had once thought runestones would be a part of that raffle (given the imagery...) but keys would be great too. Not as great as fixing chests (yes, I am obligated to mention how awful they are at every slightest opportunity) but hey. XD

@perpetualodium: O.o I'm not writing a book. Where'd that come from...And all I said was bye. You did give every implication that you were bailing from this community... XP

Isn't the game running through Steam actually a good thing? I mean, it gets advertised from time to time through pop-up windows, and you can easily find it in the f2p recommendations. Giving the game a launcher might increase its stability and repairability, but i dont see it getting any playerbase expansion.

The thing is, there are lots of people that just dont want Steam on their machines, or an account, but many games require the use of Steam. Take Path of Exile for instance:
You can download it on Steam, even link your accounts for an easier login, but you can also download a launcher for a standalone program. It doesn't remove it from Steam, it doesn't hurt the Steam community or those that choose to run it through Steam, but people that are strictly against creating themselves a Steam account are also able to play.

As a Steam gamer, this new feature really doesn't bother me, nor should it. In fact, I know from many other games that use a Launcher even on Steam that they do so precicely for the reasons listed:
    1) Flexibility
    2) Smaller Updates and
    3) irregular Update intervals
that some games cannot have through Steam proper.

That's some huge work here ! I'm always excited to see a change in Nosgoth, especially if it concerns the updates system.

I suppose independance from Steam will allow you to track players behaviors more closely, and it is probably better for you regarding the future trading system implementation. I don't know much about legal/financial implications.

I really, really hope you won't make, as San said, a Uplay-like, and I'm concerned about the nicknames and avatars thing. I'm also afraid about things such as purchasable "premium avatars" or "this name is already taken/inappropriate". People want customization and freedom, and that's part of what I would call "flexibility". Forcing us to use pre-approved avatars is not at all.

To be enjoyable, this launcher will have to be at least as flexible - in terms of customization - as Steam.

My thoughts on the launcher are: I don’t need it in a slightest.
What I do need is more content to your bare bones game. No, not more random chests. More actual content.
And what your thoughts should be: I really need to stop painting this burning house and start extinguishing the fire.

Well Warframe is F2P, forums are either sleepy or hilarious most of the times, not a drop of the concentrated poison we have here.
