Can someone tell about regional formats and the PS3?

Question Can someone tell about regional formats and the PS3?

So awhile back, I managed to get a copy of FFXIII Collectors edition. I've been really busy since my dad passed and have not had the time to even open it. I was organizing some of my games/media, and I gave the box a good looking at because I've been meaning to play it. Then I saw something that might be problematic. See, I live in the US, and the box says it's PAL format! It's too late to return it, but I checked the order and it doesn't SAY a specific region on the order invoice.
I did some research online, mostly looking at auctions on eBay and Amazon.com for NTSC format versions. And while I didn't find any in the same condition, the PAL versions I found, all said that PS3s are region free and should be able to play PAL as well as NTSC. Is this true? and Are there any limitations or special things I need to do to get it to play in my PS3? And about the audio cd inside, will that play in an American CD player computer or PS3?

    Thanks in advance guys!

The PS3 is region free - however, PSN accounts are region-specific and you will thus require a European PSN account to purchase and download DLC for a European PS3 game. Since any PS3 user account can only be tied to one PSN account, you will need a separate account to download DLC from the EU PSN. However, any DLC downloaded for a game (regardless of region) will be available to all user accounts on the PS3 once installed.

Thank you Grimoire. Is there a FAQ or tutorial about how to create a European PSN account for the DLCs? Actually, I suppose the first question should be, ARE there any DLCs for Final Fantasy XIII? If not, would I not need to worry about creating a European PSN account? I'm afraid I'm still very new to the PS3 system as well as the PSN. I've only had the chance to go through the PS3's interface a few times, and I've tried a couple Square-Enix games, but that's about it. And those games have been NTSC format.

The original Final Fantasy XIII does not have any DLC, but the two sequels have plenty. If you keep your save file(s) from FFXIII, you will be rewarded certain bonus items in the second and third installment of the series (as long as you continue to purchase games from the same region).

FFXIII-2: Having Final Fantasy XIII save file on your PS3 will reward you with a Lightning PS3 theme, a Lightning and Serah mask adornment respectively, and the Eternal Crystal (which gives you a slight advantage when playing the slot machines in the casino, Serendipity).
LR:FFXIII: Having a FFXIII and a FFXIII-2 save file will reward you Lightning's attire from each respective game.

    1. Create a new user account on your PS3 (select a European country). You will need a separate e-mail address from the one you already used for your main account.
    2. Create a EU PSN account and set your country as the United Kingdom or another European country.
    3. Keep in mind that the European PlayStation Store does not accept American credit cards or game cards, so you will have to buy EU PSN cards (you can find them on eBay) in order to purchase any DLC.

Thank you again Grimoire. One of the games I have tried is Lightning Returns and I have a couple DLCs for that game. Since, there is a carry over from FFXIII to FFXII-2. Would I need to even set up a European PSN account to use the save game data from FFXIII to use when l beat FFXIII and install FFXIII-2?

IF that's the case, I'm thinking about just looking for an NTSC copy of FFXIII so I can use that game disc. And then decide if I want to check out the "goodies" in the PAL copy box I have, or if I want to leave it sealed and just sell the PAL version of just the disc, or the whole thing sealed.

Thank you again for the continued help! I really appreciate it!

My personal experience is that the NTSC versions accept PAL saves for the purpose of unlocking the bonuses, however, the save files have to be in the same user account on the PS3 (saves can be copied between accounts).

You don't have to create a separate EU account for FFXIII since it doesn't have any DLC. The advice for creating a separate PSN account to download DLC from the EU PSN Store only applies if you continue to buy PAL editions of the remaining two games, FFXII-2 and FFXII:LR. Note that the second user account with the EU PSN account would only be used to download and install the DLC - you can then play the PAL game using your normal account since the DLC is available to all user accounts.

I could easily mix DLC from the EU and the US PSN Store by installing them on different accounts.

    Not for the time being.
