I don't mind "re-inventing classic games", but I also realise that a lot of publishers use it as a lazy way to make money of the IP's success instead of taking time to coming up with something new and different. Some things are better left alone, especially if you're not going to live up to the classic games. Let's hope Eidos know what they're doing.

Why is it better to leave old franchises alone?

Who benefits from a franchise being dead?

haha, apparently Mega Man benefits, I mean that franchise has been dead forever sadly. People say their working on a test version of an fps mega man, but who knows if it will ever be made or not.

I wouldnt say this TR is a continuation of the franchise, its starting over, all new looks with a different feel. Probably why it did bad in general, people dont like change, most thought shed be the gun blazing explorer, but got a COD type of game. Many games have done this lately, everyone wants in on that COD money. But we just gotta wait, maybe the next TR will be a Tomb Raider game, or the franchise will be passed on to a new team with new ideas. There is no way to know, but now that this origin story is out of the way, we can make way for the real tomb raider I hope.

The franchises and the those responsible for it. If a reboot messes up a franchise then you risk messing up the brand of it and it's repuation, which defeats the purpose of reboots to make them relevant and make profit from them.

Just look at DmC reboot. It was slated more than the earlier titles (by fans - critics aside) and it's lost a lot of it's core fanbase. Didn't it also sell worse than it's predecessors?

Also would you like to see Tomb Raider be dragged through the mud if the reboot was rubbish? Nobody likes seeing what they admire being messed up like some franchises are from organisations wanting extra $$$.

    Duke Nukem players, apparently.

DN FOREVER sucked donkey yarbles. I waited 15 years for that game (as did many players of Duke Nukem 3D), and was disappointed beyond belief. While it was great hearing the voice of Duke again (Jon St. John), sadly he couldn't carry the game.

I don't know where you took this impression. The reboot sells good and all I saw were good reviews. And it still gives good impressions.

Your constant delusion and hate continues to irritate.

Tomb Raider underperformed only by the standards of Square Enix and nobody else. 3.6 in the first month is GREAT in our market climate. Let's not forget that Tomb Raider surpassed Sleeping Dogs' sales TO DATE in it's first month and was just 0.1 million of surpassing Hitman's sales TO DATE aswell. Tomb Raider was a success in it's own right.

If you don't like the way the franchise is going you're best not staying. They won't be changing it, no drastic changes at least.

Also, derp @ your comment about this TR reboot not being a continuation as if it intentional to be otherwise. It's a REBOOT for a reason. It's a new universe of Tomb Raider, completely separated from the old one. It's a shame the game was indeed really shooter orientated, but I do atleast agree that hopefully the sequel is more stagnant in that area, but there's a lot of changes that will be staying.

Not sure if serious or not, but if so, no idea how that's supposedly beneficial.

If a franchise stays dead, it can't be beneficial. It's dead....no new games.....no one wins.

At least new DmC games are still being produced. One may hate it, in which case you have a simple choice to not buy the game, but at least it keeps the franchise alive, which may mean better DmC games might be produced in the future.

If the reboot was rubbish then at least it will teach the devs what NOT to do next time.

If I could choose between a rubbish installment in the franchise or the franchise being dead (as in, no more new games, EVER) then I'd go for the former.

I think that some would argue that Game developers are taking the easy way out by creating endless sequels/prequels/spin offs to so many games. It seems these days that half of the new releases fall into this category(not sure of the actual percentage, this is just how it feels to me).

Maybe the selection of games would be better, or at least more interesting if they spent that time coming up with new orginal titles with more diverse gameplay?

I know the VG industry is a business, and the object of THEIR game is to make money, and the easiest way to do that is to pump out sequel after sequel of proven money makers. My problem with that approach is when the quality of the games suffer, or stagnate, and we're left with the "same old, same old".

I'm kinda in the middle of this argument. While I do like sequels, I also understand that it comes at a cost of originality, and you're usually stuck with more of the same, with a few new minor upgrades, and the question "Could they have spent their time more wisely with a new title?".

I think CD did it right with TR 2013. It is a tomb raider game, but enough changes were made to make it feel like a completely new title.

I'm really confused about what your position is, exactly.

You say that CD did it right with TR9, so are you for game devs letting stale franchises die or are you against it?
