    "Colonel" is correct.
I told you I'd make a genius of you yet!

Do you get why the answer can only be the correct one when we consider the clue?
    Hope so.

As we're in "training mode" at the moment, this won't count toward the game. So no points for you in this round. I hope that's okay.

Okay, we'll continue in training mode. This can benefit others too.
Your turn to make a clue.

Gadflies and turpintine! 'Kernels' do not sound like any what envelopes a nut.

    No, no.
    Kernel rhymes with Colonel.
    Colonel was the right answer.

    Incorrect.

How did you come to to that answer given the cryptic clue "Avoids birds".

    Haha!

Well, you are taking the clue too literally. This is cryptic.

Think of the term "avoids". You have to find another word that relates to this.
It MUST fit in with the rest of the clue, ie. "birds".
You have to find another word/term that somehow relates to 'birds' AND 'avoids'.
If it does, you're on the right track.

It doesn't marry with "avoids" or "birds".
Or, at least, I don't see how.

Not in this case, but its a good start, you're learning fast!
So...now think of other terms that mean "avoid". A big clue is you're looking for a word that describes a kind of 'body movement'.
When you think of one... make sure it marries with "birds" (another hint: a type of bird).
