Meh, it wasn't so old school. True, you had to hold X to grab, but it was still more or less "aim roughly in the direction of a ledge and the CPU will take care of the rest"

I do agree. Grabbing should not be a thumb tiring exercise with games.
Much as I love "Shadow of the Colossus", that's another game that tends to do that.

It just depends on what you like and your style of gameplay.
Like when a walkthrough (say PRIMA for example) lists one way of doing something, like running in and attacking because they didn't find a way to sneak in, and then you find a way to sneak in yourself. (refering to a game called "Red Ninja End of Honor" )

It's a matter of gameplay style too.
Then again, I like to pride myself on being able to switch gameplay styles at the drop of a hat ^.^

Agreed, games are unrealistic for a reason.

Yes, HAVE, as in never got rid of.
It may have had problems, but it was still good enough to keep, IMO.
Besides, play it on the PS3(backwards compatable) and most of the glitches go away.
I hate it when they make games too complex for the current console >.<

As the reason they are slim is that they take the old console hardware out.
If any can play old games, it's due to a built in emulator. And that's not good enough for me >.< Sony's gotten lazy.

I never got "anniversary" as I heard they simplified the puzzles v.v

LOL, I remember that part in TR3, it was cool.
But it's not like a PLACE could be stappled to the old games.
It's an environment that they could still use if they wanted to.

    Indeed.
I had to think back on the partials chacyung quoted.

Chacyung, Steel Battalion was indeed a pretty cool game and yes, I still have the controller. Indeed, the controller is huge. It is comprised of about four components...three that snap together for the base, and acceleration and brake pedals.

Not only is it a really cool control peripheral...it makes a really cool prop.

I used it, and my Saitek X52 Flight Stick to make a quickie video to show a Colonial Viper prepping for launch in the classic Battlestar Galactica. I even used some in-game computer display graphics to help in that area. It was a personal exercise in video and sound editing, and if I do say so meself, I think it turned out quite good

As for TR: AoD, when I was referring to slim, I was referring to the slim PS2 models, which are still backwards compatible for PS1 titles. I was simply meaning that AoD seemed to run much smoother on the slim PS2's. The larger, older models were subject to freezing up and crashing from AoD.

Yes, Beyond Good and Evil was a very unique game. I really enjoyed its story and its style. I have bought the Hi-Def versions of both it, and Shadow of the Colossus. SotC is a beautiful game, made even more so in Hi-Def.

Brand new PS2's are only about 100 bucks, if that.
    Used PS2's, even cheaper.

And given that Sony is finally starting to phase out production on newer PS2 titles, I wouldn't be surprised to see the PS2's price drop further in the near future.

AoD never crashed on my ps2. Even works on our ps3. Just a few bugs but i agree they could have done some work on the PC. That was just sad. But the ps2 one workd just fine for us. EPIC

Yeah, I have the original fat PS2 and yes...
AOD did freeze and crash quite a bit.
In fact, it was so bad, that I had to quit and wait to buy my PS3.
But I would never get a slim anything.
Emulators sux, for the most part.
Even my fat PS3 has trouble with PS1 games >.<

    My sister has both.
But I have yet to play SotC v.v

Sence you already have a slim PS3,
(and I doubt you'd waste the money selling it to buy a fat one)
Then my suggestion is go online with it and see if it's compatable with the PS2 emullator you can get on the PSNetwork.
(or aparently buy a new one for 100) o_O

(that's why I only ever get the original systems)
Because eventually, the old ones will die, and then you won't be able to play "good old games" at all.
My DS can play GBA, my PS2 can play PS1,
and my PS3 can play PS2 and ps1 (though glitchy on some ps1 games)

As for the used, that's if they even work.
My sister bought a used, and it can't play hardly any games at all...
(read disk error, anyone ?? )

What sony NEEDS to do is patent the "Playstation Cube"
Just take the hardware from all 3 systems and stack them in a cube.
    (no more emulator crap)
Have the PS1 flip-lid on top, the ps2 drawer on the right side,
and the PS3 disk slot in the front just below the connector(s)
    for the memorycards and controlers.
The power cable could power all three...
And they could wire all three video cables into one with a switch
to switch back and forth between all 3, or just have the 3 cables and set up a party were everyone plays a different game all at once from the same box.

It would be great as an entertainment center in a game room.
(heavy as hell, but once in place, who'd want to move it anyway)
An awesome idea for old school gamers that don't want to abandon their collection, and a great way to continue the Playstation system collection.

Besides, things are always getting re-released in collectors packs,
and repackaged so the company can get more money, so why not?
    LOL ^.^

Now I dabble more in 3D model making and animation. Did a couple Star Trek and Battlestar Galactica things. More is on the way.

I never minded holding the grab button. It's better than the last bosses of Resi 5 or Sonic Colours DS which have big one button repeat bashing that goes on for minutes. They get to really hurt your thumb if you die a few times.

I think the bigger problem for hold-to-grab is with PC users.

It was fine with the original games, which used the keyboard only for control, as both hands would be on the keyboard at all times. But with the newest games, the mouse controls Lara's orientation (And thus the camera), so one hand is going to be on the mouse at all times, leaving only one for the keyboard.

When you're holding down one key to run and another to jump, putting it mildly it's not easy to hold down grab as well. Not having been born with three hands, I would find auto-grab more than a little useful for current TR games.

    Oh yeah, I totally agree with that ^^;
Smash a button a few (thousand) times, and my hand is official a member of the undead >.<

Good point. The only TR game I have on PC is the First "GOLD" game.
(got it for the bonus levels) ^.^
And it was old enough that I didn't have to use the mouse.
I'd rather go back to the good old days when the view was always behind the character. LOL

While you might not be able to play PS2 discs on a current model PS3 (or at least, on those models when they started dropping backward comp support for the unit), you should be able to download those PS2 titles that are available in the PSN store and play them. I hope that that is a catalog that will continue to expand...widely and quickly.

After all. I hear you can download a PS2 emulator for the PS3s that are crap (or not backwards compatable) ^^; LOL

That is... sence you don't seem to have any other options.

Yeah, AoD seems to run better on the slim model PS2's. I tried playing it when I had one of the larger PS2 units and it would occasionally lock the system up. Never really had that problem with the slims.

And I agree....new controllers, not used.

I also agree on the "new controller" thing.

I've gotten all 3 of the original playstations. (retagular PS1, and fat ps2 and ps3)
The first things to go, for me, was ALWAYS the controller and AV line to the TV.
    o_O

I never had any PS slim model, don't know why but I never liked them... slims look awkward, while regular ones goes very well with style of time they are released!

P.S. This thread is going away from topic
