    A message from Karl Stewart – Global Brand Director – Crystal Dynamics/Tomb Raider

    Hi everyone,

    Here is some exclusive news! It comes from Karl Stewart, the Global Brand Director of Tomb Raider. He's based at Crystal Dynamics over in California. As we're embracing a cool and exciting future for Lara, he's got some cool things to say which bode really well for real hardcore TR fans.... so, with,out further a-do take it away Karl....

    A message from Karl Stewart – Global Brand Director – Crystal Dynamics/Tomb Raider

    Hello Tomb Raider fans the world over.

    I wanted to take a moment of your time and give you all what is hopefully the first of many many updates from myself and the brand team on what’s happening here at Crystal Dynamics and within the Tomb Raider franchise. In addition, I also want to tell you about some exciting opportunities to help us create a brand new Tomb Raider Community/Forum.

    So, let us begin.

    Unless you’ve all been hibernating for the past 6 weeks you’re no doubt aware that early last December we officially announced our next big Tomb Raider game, simply entitled ‘Tomb Raider’. We’re delighted and extremely proud to have been able to do this with what we believe is in the most prestigious manner possible and that is to grace the cover of the world’s biggest games magazine, Game Informer. I Hope by now you’ve all had a chance to visit the Game Informer Tomb Raider hub and read all of the features they created with us.

    Did you know it’s been 13 years since the last Tomb Raider game graced the cover of Game Informer? Wow, that’s a long time for someone as big and as influential as Lara Croft and the Tomb Raider series. During their visit to the studio in November Meagan and Matt brought a few copies with them for our records, we’ll post images of them on the forums soon

    So far the response to our new vision has been remarkable, I don’t think I’ve ever read so many positive comments and received so many emails and tweets from around the world congratulating the studio on this new direction. I know it may have come as a surprise to some that we decided to go back and tell an origins story, but after months and months of debate we truly believe this is the right thing to do to put Tomb Raider back on the map. I look forward to talking to you over the next 12+ months about all of the awesome things we have planned and ensure that you’re a part of everything we do.

    As some of you may have already begun to notice, along with this new direction for the franchise we’ve also gone through a bit of a transformation in how we manage and communicate news about all things Tomb Raider. As of late 2009 when I first joined the studio in the role of Global Brand Director we began the job of building a studio based brand team with the sole responsibility for creating and managing the communication of Tomb Raider with the Square Enix teams around the world. Having a team located within the studio is an extremely exciting move for us, as it gives us a chance to communicate directly with you all on a full time basis, ensuring that no matter what, you’re all up to speed on what we’re doing.

    It is with that I am delighted to be able to introduce to you the latest addition to the brand team, Scott Fernandez.

    Scott recently joined us in the exciting new position of Community Researcher.

    One of the jobs that the team here at the studio are focused on is the job of building what I envisage as a world class community structure that allows a two way conversation between the studio and you, the fans. Scotts role over the coming months will be to reach out to every single one of you (if possible) and try to get a real understanding of important things that will help us create this new structure, this will include such things as where you’re from, how often you play, what inspires you to play and what unique features would you like to see in your community that you’ve seen elsewhere. To help with this Scott, Keir and I are currently working on a questionnaire that will go live on our TombRadier.com website over the coming week that will give you the opportunity to give your opinion.

    Over the coming days and weeks Keir will begin to introduce you all to Scott in whatever way you currently interact with the Tomb Raider community, through Facebook, Twitter or the Eidos forums.

    Please feel free to email him directly and welcome him into the Crystal/Tomb Raider family. He’s here to help us get better at communicating.

    So, before I leave you I want to make sue that you all have the latest list of development staff who are currently on twitter, dispensing their very own brand of development insight and humor.

    Development:

    @Crystaldkarl - Karl Stewart - Global Brand Director

    @kylepeschel - Kyle Peschel - Senior Producer

    @Timlongojnr - Tim Longo - Franchise Director

    @Brianhortonart - Brian Horton - Art Director

    @Brenochadams - Brenoch Adams - Concept Artist

    @Blijack - Brent Dady - Sr Brand Manager

    @cdotjohnston - Chris Johnston - Brand Coordinator

    Community:

    @sokrox - Scott Fernandez - Crystal Dynamics / Tomb Raider Community Manager

    @Keiross - Keir Edmonds - Square Enix Group Community Manager

    We’ll that’s it from me. I look forward to keeping you all update as we progress over the coming months.

    Have a great 2011

    All the best

    Karl Stewart

    Hello Tomb Raider Fans:

    Thanks Karl and Keir, it's great to work with you both!

    I am very excited to be working at Crystal in the role of Community Manager. It's amazing to be here on a daily basis and see Lara Croft and Tomb Raider coming back into the gaming spotlight. I remember playing my first Tomb Raider game on PS1 and how much joy it gave me as a gamer. This is an exciting time for Crystal Dynamics and the Tomb Raider franchise.

    A little about me...I am passionate gamer, playing on 360, PS/3 and the PC. My favorite Tomb Raider Games are either the first one or Underworld; I also love Guardian of Light. I am also curently playing anniversary which is great fun and going back to Legend as well.

    Feel free to reach out to me on either platform, or at any of the address’s below.

    Email -sfernandez@crystald.com
    Twitter – sokrox
    360 gamer tag - sok27
    PS/3 - mcdaze

    I am a fan of all genres, but my favorites are action adventure and RPG’s. In my spare time I play games, ride mountain bikes, and am a passionate musician, playing keyboards.

    As Karl mentioned we will be putting a questionnaire up quite soon and look forward to your replies.

    I look forward to speaking with you all, and please ping me anytime with questions or comments. We appreciate your support of Tomb Raider and Crystal Dynamics, and we look forward to an exciting future with all of you.

    All the best!

    Scott (or Sok, which ever you prefer)

    Hi Scott (I'm assuming Sok27, and I'm adobe ARTIST on XBL).

    This is great to have a medium connecting the fans to the designers. Opens up a whole new field of possibilities. Now I'm trying to remember who it was here that said developers should nver listen to the fans, haha.

    All the images I've seen for the upcoming game have got me more and more excited for this new beginning. While there's been some controversy over the facial redesign of Lara, I for one have enthusiastically embraced it for it's realism and how it makes Lara so life like, a living breathing person in ther modern age. This reboot has my full support and it's going to b agonizing waiting till I can actually play it

    Thanks Adobe Artist...I agree the new Lara looks terrific. I believe the more realistic look will only enhance gamers experience. I'll pass on your positive feelings to the art team.

    And I'll do all I can to make the waiting period less painful. Even though I am here at the studio, I can't wait to play the game either. We will keep you all updated, and we so appreciate everyone's comments and support.

    Cheers!

    Hi Scott! Glad you're finally here!

    First of all, be so kind and tell Crystal Dynamics the story/premise in the new TOMB RAIDER is something I've been waiting many many years for. To be finally getting Casino Royale/Batman Begins treatement on Tomb Raider franchise is my little fanboy/geeknerd dream coming true.

    Second of all, please take a look here: http://forums.eidosgames.com/showthread.php?t=116009

    Third, please pass "I love you!" message to Chris Avellone from me at E3! I know Obsidian will sharing booth with Square Eidos this year hehe

    Hi Pietras

    Thanks for the note. I will let the studio team know you are excited, they'll be happy to hear it. I agree too, I am stoked about the new Tomb Raider as well. I checked out your link, you make good points. I agree, it's similar to Guardian of Light showing that it's possible to take a big franchise and make it work well in a digital format.

    I will pass that link along to the team.

    Thanks so much!

    Cheers

    Scott

    Thumbs Up Wow!

    First of all, welcome Scott Fernandez!
    It´s great to have you here and to be able to communicate directly with a Crystal Dynamics employee on the forums. I love the idea of an ´official´ survey, it´s nice to know that we as fans will have something to say in things. I´ll make sure to not let this great opportunity pass.

    The new game looks promising so far, can´t wait for more news. Please let everyone @Crystal know that they are heading in the right direction, hopefully one that will put TR back in the spotlight (where it belongs)!

    Oh, and words cannot describe how much I love Brenoch´s concept art.

    BTW Sok, Karl (Stewart) said in the podcast if anyone can guess the target release date based on the info CD has released so far he should come and work at CD. So I say March 2012 is the target date at the moment. Can I get my CD office pass now?

    Hey Scott! Nice to meet you.
    I'm Chriss and no one knows Lara Croft as good as I do.
    There's no doubt Tomb Raider has got a lot of fans and you'll quickly notice that opinions about Tomb Raider and its future vary.

    I'm one of the sceptical fans who isn't hyped about the new game yet! However, I have faith in Crystal Dynamics and the whole team that's working on TR9.
