Question How Do I Sell Video Tapes?

    Hi, Playmates,

I know we are all forced to move with the times as it were but it seems the video tape is no longer valid unless it is a rare edition or a movie that has never been released on DVD

I'm not a techno-snob and ergo, I was able to purchase a VCR a couple of years ago after my existing one had run it's course.

There are some tapes I still watch but there are also an awful lot that I don't watch and they were initially purchased at top Dollar.

I Googled some info about this and landed up on a very discouraging forum thread about some guy who couldn't even get 20p each for his vids at the car boot sale (a sort of garage sale for you Americans..lol)

I really can't be 'arrised to go down the eBay route but I want to get at least a quid each for my movies.

Any suggestions? Oh, I'm not selling here incidentally just to clear that up! I just want some advice if possible.

    Cheers!

    Lo

One at a time, and hopefully you'll get a buyer. I would do an advetisement in one of the free classified magazines/papers if you have one.

I have 4 VHS recorder/players, 1 Beta recorder/player and about 400 tapes for the two systems.

I also have half a dozen DVD players, 2 of which allow me to convert the VHS to DVD, if I wish.

I use the VHS more often than I do the DVD. The main reason is that I can, and do, record from the TV often, and my computer also has a direct TV in that I often record with, edit the recordings, and then burn DVDs.

Good luck with your sale, but you will only get about 1/5 or less than the price you paid, unless you have a very rare recording.

If you have the time, you might make a list of every VHS you want to sell, and then you can Email the list to an interested buyer. If you don't want your Email public, then create a account on one of the free services (Yahoo, Gmail, Hotmail) and use that as the sole contact for your sale.

As far as "Move with the times", if it ain't broke and you use it, DON'T FIX IT!

Whats a DVD? I thought everyone had BluRay now.

No just kidding. I know what you mean, its near impossible to find people who want VHS anymore, its a sign of the times I guess, just like I don't know a single person who uses a tape player in their car. Several years back I simply gave away a bunch of VHS tapes I had to my co-workers, I just wanted them gone and I figured that was easier then trying to sell them. Sometime you can sell a few at yard sales if the right person comes along. Honestly I got rid of my VHS player many years ago and switched over to DVD exclusively then. When I bought my PS3 I switched again to BluRay and have been buying my movies in that format since then. Who knows maybe ten to fifteen years from now we wont be able to find anyone who wants to buy our old DVD's anymore.

Rios, I have no interest in Bluray. Perhaps in a year or so (give or take) I may consider one, but I don't need the movies or else in that format.

I may indulge if all players require it (I really don't care about Bluray movies etc.), as long as my CDs will play on my equipment.

Times change, but I have sufficient clarity and definition with what I have now.

As I said, I burn my own movies and never buy.

Strange. eBay or some similar site (perhaps native to UK) seems like the most logical choice. Besides, with eBay you can sell your stuff worldwide... I think. I agree that if the movies you own on tape exist on DVD as well, it might be very tricky to sell them.

I value and appreciate your opinion Black, and its perfectly fine if you don't care about BluRay, just for the record I wasn't trying to sell anyone on it or in anyway suggest that it should be the one and only format of choice, I was simply sharing my personal experience with the whole media option over time. Everyone has their own tastes, and if what works for you, works for you, then that is awesome.

    Wow! Interesting comments.

Thanks to all who have contributed

I paid top Dollar on eBay for the film "Castaway". Not the one starring Tom Hanks - the one with Oliver Reed and Amanda Donahoe (based on a true story). It has never been released on DVD and ergo, the VHS tape is very much a covetted item and I won the bid on eBay.

It's actually very poor quality but sometimes one has to just accept this and enjoy the content regardless.

My brother is always top-notch with his gadgets but I am only snobby when it comes to my home computing I buy the best of the best and rarely spend under £1000 on my compter (Dell is the best!)

I took your post as such. I meant no disrespect, and as you were, I was merely expressing an opinion.

I apologize if it seemed otherwise.

No sir, not at all, no disrespect taken, no apology necessary. To be honest I only responded to you directly because you seemed to be speaking directly to me as your post started with my name. I believe we both were simply expressing our opinions on the subject, just wanted to clarify I wasn't trying to push anyone toward any specific type of media, its all personal choice and as you mentioned what you use now is sufficient for your needs. Ive heard of people who still prefer Beta over all other current forms of media. I only started buying BluRay because I purchased a PS3, had I not, I'm sure I would still be buying movies on DVD. Not that DVD doesn't still make up the bulk of my library right now anyway. I really wish I had the ability to burn recorded TV to disc like you can, I think that would be really cool.

Dusty, I am happy to ship anything over since you still watch videos (free that is). I have good stuff like The Bridge Over the River Kwai, The Great Escape etc. That said, they may not play on USA VCRs, I'm not sure.

I'll inbox you on the other "site".

You are correct Lo. Your tapes are in PAL format and ours are in NTSF. But I appreciate the offer.

You can't be arsed with eBay? How much more lazy can one get if you don't even want to sell the stuff online

Do you want everyone to just go to your house or something, lol.

Seriously, though, what are your gripes with eBay? Just create an account, list your tapes and set a minimum prize so you'll be sure they won't sell for 20 p.

They won't all sell the first time around, so then you just keep re-listing them. Nothing difficult about that

It's just a case, Driber, of uploading all the pictures and navigating my way around.

I've never attempted to sell anything on eBay but I suppose it is the only sure way of clawing back some cash, even if you have to make a few Pennies by setting a bit of an inflated postal cost. Not that I condone any seller who's standard rate is like £5

I think some charge £2 and sell the video for £1 so if it costs £1 to actually send they've effectively made £2 less what PayPal may charge.

First off I'd have to buy a new card for the camera so I can reserve it for eBay items only. Everytime I upload pics from my camera, the Fuji siftware uploads the entire content (must be a way around this, I am not too sure). This means I have to remove all the ones that are replicas of those already uploaded which in itself is a bit of a pain.

I guess one could just post up any old picture of the video in question but that would be unethical and stealing...or something.

I hear you Lo, I have a bunch of stuff Id like to sell too but I don't really want to spend the time messing with eBay or craigslist myself. I guess I just want everyone to come to my house or something.

Yes, this is done intentionally to cut down on eBay fees. It's officially against the rules, but it happens everywhere and as a buyer, I'm not complaining about it.

Stop using unnecessary picture transfer software and buy yourself a card reader. Tell me which format your camera takes and I'm sure I can find you a cheap one on eBay

I got this one for my new Sony camera:

Won it for $0.10 a few weeks ago on eBay

And it also saves me the hassle of carrying bulky USB cables when I'm on vacation.

...this is my model (looking at the camera itself)

    Fuji Finepix A610.

To help I will Google the site specialising in this model...hang on (like you are going anywhere when I haven't even posted yet hahaha!! ):

If you can direct me to an eBay purchase that may help. Thanks mate! You are always so helpful if not a little unforgiving at times, hehe!

Ta muchly Dribs! I'll bookmark that useful site oh and LOL at your spoiler you norty person (my sig is rather similar however )

Also LOL @ Rios. Yeah I feel your pain. I just want people to queue up outside of the front door holding wads of cash for my most excellent video collection

Me neither. I mean what's wrong with the world? I want to see Jesus-type disciples forming a 3-mile queue outside of my sanctuary - all trying to swamp me with adoration whilst waving 50 Quid notes around with gay abandon!

I'll be first in line Lo, first in line to swamp you with adoration. I don't know what a Quid is but I can assure you that I will be waiving it, probably not in any sort of gay fashion, but waiving it none the less.

    Hehe, I like your sig

Ok I'll find you something. In the meantime, did you get a new computer yet? If so, check if it has an SD card reader integrated already, as most modern computers come with it nowadays.

I have the new computer but how do I recognise an SD reader? Tell me what to do (right-click on "My Computer"?
