Heya guys,

Went to the B:AA event at Roxy Bar and screen, which may i say is a fantastic venue, especially with all the free food. Well anyway, I asked questions to all the team who were there and took a few pictures to give you an idea of what it was like. Paul Crocker was also there, so all "Captain Crocker" fans, you missed out big time! Below is one interview from Sefton Hill and a few pictures. Also this is just a small portion of what was said. I used a digital voice recorder so I could then type down all of what was said, but many questions were much more in depth. Thank you to Sefton Hill and all the team for letting me interview them, I know you guys read the forums. At the moment only Seftons interview is up as the others are larger conversation pieces.

Batman Arkham Asylum Interview
Sefton Hill

• It’s taken a long time for a developer to realise the potential for a Batman game. Why now?

S:H- Well I guess especially when people are working on certain licenses, the time frame is so small. I think the nice thing here, definitely with Eidos and Warner, is that we all want to make a really good Batman game. We were all very up front and said if we were going to do it, that we would want the right amount of time and that we didn’t want to do something that everyone wasn’t going to be happy with.

• In the planning stages did you consider placing the game in Gotham itself or did that bring to many complex things such as a story to fit and level design?

S:H- Yeah we talked about a number of different ideas, I mean we considered everything right from the start. We didn’t throw anything out for discussion. But as soon as we ended up on the idea of the “Arkham island”, we liked it because it allowed us to have a lot of different characters in there.

• Once you have finished the main game can you go back and play through again to obtain all the extras and riddles you missed?

S:H-Yes at the end of the game you can play through again to get any extras and riddles that you missed. The first riddle that you obtain is actually included in a tutorial to show you how it works and to get the basics of it. But for the other 239, if you wanted, you could get them at the end. But then again, if you left them to the end, you would in turn leave all that XP until the end and would upgrade slower. Also as you obtain more XP and upgrade, you can then use those upgrades in the challenge maps, which is another reason to play through and find all the secrets.

• Are there various difficulty levels throughout the game?

S:H- Yes, we have three difficulty levels which are; Easy, Medium and Hard. They are all open from the start. On easy it doesn’t really ramp up as you progress through the game, if you wanted to just cane through the game, that’s the one you would want to select. On medium it’s as normal and the difficulty slowly ramps up according to the enemy type. Hard was really made for us to play the game at Rocksteady Studios, for experienced players. You don’t have the counter marks above the enemy’s head and also on Hard the boss fights play out slightly differently, some use harder attacks etc. If Batman gets shot at, then a full clip will most certainly put him down and out of action.

• When you re-play through the game to find all the secrets, will there not be any missions to participate in?

S:H- Yeah I mean what’s left of the environment is what’s left. Whatever is left from your last play through will still be there.

• Is there going to be anything in the form of online scoreboards?

S:H- Yeah we have the online scoreboards for people to try and see who can get the best score. At the office, all the staff are constantly trying to see who can get the highest score. But we are being out scored by Eidos QA who had a score of 140 combos. We then all thought it was a bug and asked why it as so high, but then the guy just said “No I’m just really good”.

• Are you guys working on a sequel?

S:H- I cant really comment. It’s a lot more down to how it’s received and if people really like it, then we could maybe start work on a sequel. There is definitely a lot more story to tell in the world and it would be great to work on a sequel.

Thank you for your time.
S:H- No problem :).

Awesome questions especially about the early stages of the game. As many threads about Eidos conspiracy and hiding things, ive felt like they have been pretty open about the development.

Maybe they realize it or not, but Sefton and the team really have made something truly groundbreaking and refreshing. Id have no worries with them on a sequel, id sign them immediately.

I know the challenge rooms will be a blast but I hope for more riddles as DLC. Say another 100 riddles or so? Complete with additional trophies for completing them. I know the riddles will keep me coming back after I'm done. I know there are going to be online leaderboards for the challenge rooms but I think additional riddles would be amazing for those who may tire of the challenge rooms. Hell, they could do an all-new original spin on the Maze of the Minotaur from the BTAS episode, "If you're so smart, why aren't you rich?". I'd love to see an amped version of that ep as a level with messed up booby traps and such.

240 riddles seems to be very much sufficient. As for a maze, that could be a candidate for DLC.

However, they're about to distribute the game. Nothing new can be added.

Seft did say that you are made to get 1 of the riddle things at the beginning (So you get what the riddles point to!), you're not allowed to advance until you do........ so you only need to find 239 :)

Also I noticed about 5 riddlers trophies in the demo they showed........ one was strangely trapped behind some wire mesh stuff.......

Dr Young. Think there may have been 2 Dr Youngs, cant remember which one this was tho. Think this is Penelope!?

I tried to get shots of Harley sitting at the table, but then remembered there were loads of decent shots of that already so I left it.
Should of got a shot of the big presents that you sometimes see in the middle of corridors and stuff, but forgot to.
