Hello all,
l tried to pre-order Thief for the PC at gamestop now its called EB Games in Canada where I live in Hamilton, why is there no pc version seen.its like a week away..
please help Thanks kindly Rob:scratch:
http://www.ebgames.ca/browse?nav=16k-Thief+with+Exclusive+Bonus+

There isn't a physical version of the game on PC in Canada... you can only get the digital version.
http://community.eidosmontreal.com/blogs/Take-5-QA-6?theme=thief

UK people - the limited metal case edition (with bank heist mission) is now available to pre-order from Amazon UK, on all formats (!!!!).
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Thief-Limited-Metal-Bonus-Mission/dp/B00IAL7WVG/ref=sr_1_sc_2?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1392039411&sr=1-2-spell&keywords=thief+metal+cfase

Finally pre-ordered this game, was hoping for this :)

I also noticed the Thief soundtrack is listed on Amazon, too; you can listen to snippets of all the tracks right now if you want (!), but I recommend not reading the track titles - they are a little spoilery.

Sorry my post may have been unclear. I meant, is the bank heist DLC only bundled with the physical edition of the game or will the Xbox One Digital edition include it as well.

Afaik, the bank heist is only available via the physical edition for XB One.

Treehouse Brand Stores
http://treehousebrandstores.com/

I was wondering if the "Opportunist Package" would be present across all the platforms.
But from what I have read, it will only be on the PC version?

Opportunist package
Quiver upgrade: increase maximum arrow capacity.
Choke arrows.
Poppy flowers.
Gold.

Does this mean console users won't have access to the Quiver upgrade and the Choke arrows? Isn't that a little stupid?
Or is it simply giving us the Quiver upgrade and Choke arrows earlier than usual?
Thanks ahead of time! And sry for bad english >_<

I think the opportunist package is just a booster pack of those things. So you will get a number of choke arrows, some gold, and a larger quiver to use at the beginning of the game. You can still buy all those things during the game, though. And no, the Master Thief edition is only on PC. The rest of us have to make do with the normal edition, but there will be a shop where we can buy any extra merchandise.

I've been looking every ware on the web trying to find out if thief will be available for down load on the Xbox one market place. Please help. Thanks. Been playing thief since Thief Gold.

Welcome aboard, Kenwashere.

I went and asked for you and the Xbox One will indeed have Day One digital download. Here's the digital platform schedule below:

PC: Day One
Xbox One: Day One
PS4: Day One
PS3: Day One
Xbox 360: March 7th

Hope that helps!

Updates Jan/Feb 2014

I'm just going to leave this here...

http://cdn.eidosinteractive.com/mtl/marketing/Community/Blog/Thief/shirts.jpg

The metal case is indeed a real thing. Unfortunately, it is available only in some countries/retailers.

I'm trying to get a full list of special offers together for you guys, but it's pretty tricky as these things are not managed by us at EM. Each regional Square Enix office works out their own distribution deals with their local stores. But I'll get as much detail as I can!

Official word on the Collector's Edition, merchandise, and more. (http://community.eidosmontreal.com/blogs/Take-5-QA-6?theme=thief).

Sorry about the Collector's Edition. I know a lot of you were hoping for one :(

We've joined forces with Treehouse Brand Stores to create a whole line of Thief apparel, artwork and other goodies.
The store will be open in the next few weeks, and that's an announcement you won't want to miss.

I have a Q&A coming about preorder bonuses, special editions, merchandise and other such questions hot from my inbox. Then, we'll do another classic one with your questions about gameplay in February.
For the podcast, I am thinking we'll do an episode all about the PC version, I just have to reserve some time with the right dev. I'll open a thread for your questions once it's confirmed.

I would love to have some official Thief merchandise like:

- Soundtrack CD

- Clothing

now what about some of these items included in a Trapezoidal Collector's Edition Box? ;)

Yes please, to all. :thumb:

It would be fantastic to see the release of a special Collectors' Edition too.
As for ideas of the box content. Graphic novel perhaps, a figure/model of main protagonist, art cards etc?
Oh, and a city map would be awesome. :)

and editor for thief 4 and source code for the dark engine! ;)

and i 2nd the call for a poster... i'd take one of a map of the city or of some type of thief concept art.

or they could do a fan contest for art to be turned into a poster for a collector's edition :)

Lockpick replicas

No, no. Real, useable promo lockpicks. Make a deal with Southord (http://southord.com/), theirs are excellent.

But a Thief bow & crystal arrows replica would possibly be doable without invoking weapons legislation.

Other stuff (I agree with the rest of the suggestions so far):

Thief comic book(s). Like Assassin's Creed, only a lot better. Remember Dave Gibbons' Beneath A Steel Sky comic?

Mundane promo merch like lunchboxes, keychains, pens etc. aren't very exciting to me overall, but I'm sure they're nice to have.

Oh, and so is a full-length live action motion picture directed by Uwe Böll.

I don't see how a movie would translate well...I mean, most of the movie would be Garrett waiting in the shadows for the perfect time to sprint to the....next shadow. Lol!

Elemental arrowhead replicas would be great collector's edition items.
Also, a plastic/resin replica of Garrett's mechanical eye. Better yet, a teeny tiny (read: cheap) usbdrive of 512MB/1GB storage inside the mechanical eye. That way you'd have an excuse for dragging it around with you and showing it off to friends.

Printed cloth map of the city would also be great. Maybe a couple different maps of various places. Something similar to the map of Norrath in the EQ2 Collector's edition.
Drawing further on the EQ2 collector's edition, some coins would be cool as well, especially if found in a tiny cloth pouch.

EDIT: Supercheap (so as not to bump up the price of the collector's edition much) miniwebcams inside a replica of Garrett's mechanical eye. Hm? Hm? How awesome would that be? Working mechanical eye, yeeeeeah. :p

- a real water-arrowhead on a chain (as a necklace).
- replica of the main relic that needs to be found.
- a DVD containing a few of the fan-fave maps (could be a vote on the forum) in the new engine.

I know I'd like to play "life of the party" in a brandnew coat :)

A cape :hmm: Seriously, Thief is one of the best series ever. I would gladly pay a large sum for a kickass collectors edition.

You guys have some awesome ideas. Personally the only thoughts I had some replica item/loot from the game, a soundtrack, and books of the factions, like Hammerite sermons and stuff like that. OF COURSE I would fully expect a cloth map, but that hasn't been done in like...forever?

This is 2000's though, so I'd expect nothing more than a crummy little folded up paper poster, some lame unlockable content, and a dvd with insights on the game's development. Sigh. Collectors editions suck now.

Graphic novel or Comic

I would like to see a re-release of the original games, including Thief Gold, and a collector's set with all five games in trapezoidal boxes - even TDS though it never had one before. If possible, the re-releases should be modified for compatibility with the current OS when they are released.

Corvin25
15th May 2009, 08:17
Perhaps a limited edition lamp/nightlight.... of ARROWS. :) Made of either glass or fiberglass or translucent colored plastic, whatever. They should look like the "crystals" tied onto the shafts of Garrett's arrows.

A glowing orange fire arrow, green moss arrow, blue water arrow, yellow gas arrow. Or maybe a round plastic "flash bomb" light, which can be set to pure white light, or strobe. ;)
The game is all about lighting, is it not?

...... Oh god. I just got the best idea ever.

KEEPER GLYPH LAMPS. A "book" with lightbulbs inside, with a colored translucent area containing scratched out "glyphs." Naturally the lamp would have a dark orange/rust/yellow sort of light cmonig from the glyphs. Maybe the "cover" of the book could be swapped out with different glyph sheets, like a Lite Brite. A red-glowing hammer glyph, A green-glowing pagan glyph, and a blue-glowing keeper glyph. And on the spine of the book would be the "THIEF" title in white.

Sometimes ideas just pour out of me. O_o

And lastly: Jewellery. You already mentioned "water arrow" pendants. But if you guys made a Hammerite Rosary, or sterling silver hammer pendant, I'd buy it in a second. I've always enjoyed the Hammers, and they're easily my favorite faction.

.... Please don't kill me, Viktoria... D:

Thieffanman
15th May 2009, 20:14
Collector's Edition:

If this was in a box, I'd buy it:

- Soundtrack CD
- Art book
- Books
- Clothing/ T-shirt
-Signed, limited edition lithograph of a scene or cityscape, like what was done for Half-Life 2.
-Jewelry: After reading about it, a Hammer rosary was suggested. I like this because, unlike an arrowhead replica, this would actually be more game-specific in that it would (theoretically) be something found on a character, whereas arrowheads of different colors can currently be bought online for just about any reason :).

In short: The more swag available in a collector's box --and game-specific detail/attention paid to that swag to make it 'right'-- the more in-demand it will be :).

A list of possibilities... lets see what I'd be willing to dole out for:

ABSOLUTELY at any price these should be included in a collectors edition:
Level editor/creator
Map of the city on cloth (Ala Neverwinter Nights collectors edition)
Sound track CD/DVD
Art book

I'd be willing to pay $10 more if it included one of the following:
A DVD with all the cutscenes (please make them the artistic ones from T1 and T2, no final fantasy style stuff)
A Burrick plushie (so cute... yet gassy...)
A hammerite rosary
A T-shirt with the classic image of the hammer with the red glazing background, or the keeper keyhole with the light shining out of it, or one of Garret's hood with only the shine of his mechanical eye peering out of the blackness of the T-shirt

I'd be willing to pay $20 more for one of the following + something from above
The classic purple velvet purse with some fake metal gold coins in it
Garrett's mechanical eye
Necklace with an elemental arrowhead on it
Builder's Hammer
A full sized elemental arrow with plaque to display it on

I personally feel a cape would be too out there... although a hood could be cool?

Maybe a fake tattoo of garret's keeper scar that he had at the end of the 3rd game XD

DoomyDoomyDoomDoom
16th May 2009, 12:14
Hood/cape/cloak whatever. I mentioned a cape in jest though.

Point is, it would be cool if they included some sort of tool of Garretts trade in the spirit of thiefsie. Article of clothing, weapon, lockpicks, rope arrow, whatever (heh just imagined somebody trying to climb a rope arrow, down you go). I'd imagine people would be strongly opposed to any of his more 'physical' tools being included though. Act now and you'll receive a blackjack! Tired of your whiny kid or significant other? A Hood...probably the easiest and coolest piece of clothing they could do as part of a collectors box.

A Cloak...but kind of big and too expensive to be feasible.

A black 'Thief' t-shirt...not 'Thi4f'. I don't mind Thi4f as a game title, but I won't wear it as a shirt.

Or a black t-shirt with Garrett's line that says 'All that you have, I can make mine!'

This is a really good idea for a thread. I've often held the view that one of the best ways of combatting piracy is to add value to the purchased product.

When I bought Morrowind, I got a map, a great-looking fold-out box and a decent manual.

I like smart packaging, books and maps, personally. Never been one for figurines or general clutter. So I'd definitely vote for:

...A 200-page novella (by China Mieville or someone Steampunky), perhaps in the form of Garret's journal and filling in some backstory to the plot...
...An art book, containing concept art and other sketches
...A map poster

Personally I find figurines etc. a bit naff, but maybe that's just me.

I'd like to see the developer's take a cue from Starbreeze's treatment of the Chronicles of Rid****: Escape From Butcher Bay. First, they expanded the original game for the PC version to include a director's commentary and a bonus level. Then, the entire game was given a face-lift for current-gen consoles.

So, for Thief 4, a developer's commentary would be my #1 request for a collector's edition. Also, the first 2 games are EXTREMELY worth updating for current consoles like EFBB was done, and would make fine additions to a collector's addition.

My ideal Collector's Edition:

An in-universe box. Like a wood box with the Keeper symbol burned into it.

Soundtrack CD. Some of the best music I've ever heard in a game came from the Thief series. If it's still up to snuff, a soundtrack CD would be awesome.

A cloth map of the City.

A Thief Art Book, maybe with a little retrospective section looking back on the history of the Thief games.

Something I don't want - any kind of mechanical gadget or action figure. THESE NEVER WORK.

I bought the Fallout 3 survival edition, and the PipBoy clock broke after a week.

I bought the BioShock Collector's Edition, and the Big Daddy figurine was broken.

I bought the Assassin's Creed Collector's Edition, and the Altair figurine was broken.

FORGET THAT. I would love a mechanist trinket in my box, but not a piece of crap that costs 20 extra bucks that breaks during shipment. It dilutes the experience.

I don't care for figurines.

Actually this seems like a very good little guideline to making a Collector's edition of anything.

The World of Warcraft Collector's Editions contain art books, soundtrack CDs, maps (in the form of mousepads), as well as a "making of" dvd.

I'd buy the Collector's Edition of Thief 4 for those.

Wouldn't bother with collectible card games though.

Although a deck of ordinary playing cards might be fun.

CLEVER, SUBTLE stuff that people who have played the games will get Please, no THI4F plastered across the front of my shirt or poster. Again, subtle allusions to the game on shirts and posters suffice (and again, look at some of Valve's merchandise). First of all, I'm not a walking advertisement. Before reading others' inputs, my suggestions colored by the Ultima series.

Cloth map, possibly of the City, though one from a key mission would be nice too.

Trinket, usable as a necklace pendant, a distinctively Keeper Key would be my choice. There could different ones floating about. Try to make them reasonably durable.

CD with a full music soundtrack.

Editor, version available on release (note that I still suggest a spruced up version available with a remake of Thief 1&2 released 'shortly' after Thief 4)

Temporary Thief tats?

Keeper caligraphy set? (we all need to improve our handwriting.)

I don't much care for figurines and other things which break easily/gets chewed by cats and dogs and little brothers. Realistic Lockpicks and weapon replicas might be a nogo with shipping legalites and over protective parents.

Edit: thoughts on others' ideas, and some newer ones:

And I demand the box be a trapezoidal prism. YES! Although, a box which was a lockable 'Keeper' book with the insides cut out is an interesting idea...probably too expensive.

Firstly, all these things should be separately purchasable at the Eidos Thief store...contradictory but yeah.

Hooded Cape/cloak, YES! Preferably with subtle inscriptions woven in, and be actually comfortable, with pockets (some hidden ones), water repellent and warm.

Art Book. And a thoughtful non-schlocky glosssy Graphic novel, and a comic which is.

Useful thiefsie satchel, w/logos and other Thief clues are on the inside...hidden compartment! [edit2] Actually, this by itself would make for a good 'Box' that the Deluxe set comes in. If so, make sure this is well constructed... far too often these are held together with metal bits which ruin the threading. Blue-black, and goes well with the Cloack/Cape. Nothing glossy, no velcro or other non-steampunk era materials, though being subtly water resistant is always good. Leather would be going too far.

Plushies! Ph34r the cute ones!

Journal style manual reminiscent of ingame journals...much better than the useless instructions that gets included these days.

in that vein. Books of philosophy and prophesies.

Complete desktop theme on CD.

Deck of cards? Why not. Likely this should be part of a seperate games line. Get a chess set for figurines...or maybe tabletop RPG

A Pagan set of seeds and planting tools.

Functional working quality Mechanist pocket watch, wearable at Steampunk Cons. I'd settle for a Hammer to keep thieves at bay.

WRT the Eye replicas as working video cam (or alternatively, mechanist suveilance thingies)
> Miruko < (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uFt6HvMlRk8) Why not!

What if the "collector's edition" would include nothing extra? Instead, a game completely built around the idea that gaming consoles never existed. This would cost 30$ more on the PC but less on the consoles because "everyone knows that when you design a game for PC, it's impossible to even think about playing it on a console" This way the publishers would "get back" the so-called "losses" that have been caused by software piracy on the PC, because everyone that's played Thief on the PC would instantly pay 30$ extra for an unbutchered version of the new game.

Only after seeing that the "collector's edition" has been sold out and the standard consolized version hasn't been touched, the publishers see the fallacy of their delusion that the only way to ensure profits is to consolize the living taff out of PC games. The whole idea that console players can't operate sophisticated controls, see small details or think with their brain is a lie. It only applies to fans of games that are completely based on flashy colors, button mashing, big action and boobs, like Halo, Guitar hero or DOA. But no developer is ever going to take the chance of developing a true PC game to a console just to test that theory.

Oh, I'll buy the collector's edition. But only if the game is actually based on Thief. -1 and 2 to be precise.

I think some simple merchandise would do well enough. Action figures, shirts, posters and art books(my personal favorite merchandise), things like that.
The question is: What is the theme of the new game going to be?
Dark Project was about the Pagans
Metal Age was about the Hammers and Mechanists
Dark Shadows was about the Keepers.

Unless they are thinking about making something from each faction, I'd assume they would have primarily relevant items from the new game and theme.

Arrow, that has crystal on head but it has 3 knobs (knob methoids: 1. wireless controller, 2. see pic A ) Red knob, blue knob and green knob, then there is power button too.. and on that crystal there is 3x (or less or more) MULTICOLOR leds so that u can change the color of the leds whit that controller 83

dont rly care about flashbomb but i realy would like to see that multicolor arrow :D (whit multicolor you could create your own elemental arrows, pinkarrow and stuff like that)

EDIT: boredom, random pic of that arrow :3

While not a bad idea, I think adding something like an LED to a replica arrow would make it look less genuine while increasing the cost by quite a bit.

With regards to the arrows, I think the best idea is to either give a full arrow, or just the crystal part of one. I think randomly distributing the four colors would allow for nuts like myself to collect them. Or on second thought, they don't even have to be random. They could have 4 versions of the Collector's Edition box. They could use the same image, with the only change being the color of the arrow (which should be worked into the image like in Thief 1/G/2) indicating the color of the replica inside. No? Yes?

I LOVE the idea of a huge cloth map of SouthQuarter and the rest of the neighbourhoods!! That and a Thief hoodie are my favourites! It may be a little silly, but a soft leather blackjack is kinda cool too.
For the cover art, how about a lock? Don't think they could make it pickable. But if they did, everyone would have to 'break into' their game box before they could play Thief... :D

I'm on board for the map idea too. However, should they decide to make a map, I think it should be comprehensive and attempt to take in elements of the three games. I know there was/is a group of individuals who were working on such a map. I think their work, should they desire it, be utilized by the developers. (With all the appropriate shout-outs to those whose efforts were involved. Sorry for not knowing you by name.)

I'm not a fan of comprehensive maps for Thief. Seeing the town map in Thief 3 ruined the feeling of a Thief "universe" for me. I'm more okay with just a section of town being portrayed. Maybe one of the bigger or more detailed maps in T2 would be cool.

you're not okay with extra and bonus things, like unlocks, being made for the game itself, but you're okay with time, energy and resources being spent on these things? What happened to your philosophy of how every last resource should be toward making flawless gameplay? Just curious. An observation I'm curious to hear your reply to.

I see you concern. I should have noted that by comprehensive, I meant that it would include a large segment of territory, but not attempt to be so detailed as to have every single street. I guess it doesnt really work, but the mapping project I spoke about was neat, and I would love to see a polished version of it on my wall. By no means should they try to simply or remove the mystery surrounding the city; that would be a mistake.

An observation I'm curious to hear your reply to.this uses marketing people rather than game developers, the game developers aren't responsible for the artwork on the box the game comes in, nor would they be responsible for the design of T shirts with Thi4f on them for example

in a large company like Square-Enix marketing budgets will be completely separate from development budgets

xDarknessFallsx
8th Dec 2009, 15:42
But it still would cost money to make these things, Theres only so much money, and when you apply additional money to marketing to do this stuff then there is less money for IT to do their stuff. I'm not saying I'm against some of these things.

It's like with UM making an Assassins Creed movie. That cost money. And the money spent making that movie couldve been spent on the actual game.

esme
8th Dec 2009, 16:44
in an ideal world I'd agree, and yes ultimately the money does come out of the same coffer

however in my experience of corporate IT, everyone fights for their budget, marketing always gets a huge chunk of dosh, development gets just barely enough and once assigned the money never gets reassigned, so no matter what happens with marketing it won't affect development and vice versa

marketing always had better jollies as well

that said SE/EM could do their finances differently

I had to shake my head a couple of times as I read the wishes. Of course people have different opinions and stuff, but think it over first. Personally I think that it's not a good idea to take anything specific of Hammerites, Pagans or such. Because some people don't like Hammerites or some don't like Pagans so why would they like to pay anything of having their merchandise? This is Thief's collector's edition, so let's stay in the common Thief-stuff also.

When ya look at the other collector's editions they have gone the normal way: Artbook, Making of DVD, Soundtrack, game, maybe some extra missions, poster and a figure of somekind. That's what everyone is ready to pay for, I'm sure.

T-shirts wouldn't be that good idea to have in the collector's edition either. They could as well go and sell them separate in their own shop, because... There are fans that are size 10 or 15, BUT there also are fans that are size 4 to 7. So, my point is that should they have different sized t-shirts in editions? Too troublesome.

And uh... Arrows? I understand flashbombs, but arrows? Not saying that it's idiotic to want one, but still I don't think all the fans would like to get one. Personally I have no use for one.

Trinkets... Well, why would they make trinkets when people can go and buy and create their own fillings of the "treasure chest"?

Lockpicks aren't that bad, but again: you can buy own from the shops that are specialized or from the internet shops. And locks are the same. Mechanical eye is a good idea and unique, you won't have it anywhere else so that's a good example of a trinket fans would like to have.

I'm not sure about the playingcards either... There are cards of WoW, I understand it, but Thief is a lot different thing. 'Course one option would be to put from one to three Art Cards go with the Artbook, it would be nice. There is also the money issue. Would you like to have let's say... Build-an-arrow -set rather than a good quality figure of Garrett? They don't have money for all of the stuff.

What I am trying to say is that think what would be good for everyone. We can't have all of it, but we can affect to that what would please all of the fans. Let's work for that.

I think some witty tee shirts would be good. You know, the simple white text on black shirt type that is sort of funny for someone who doesn't know the games, and really great for those that do. Maybe a quote from Garrett or Benny, or some other guard.
Something like that. And a little THIEF logo on the back or something. Nothing big or flashy.

If the Collector's Edition contained some or all of the following, it would be a dream come true:

-25 or 32mm metal figure of Garrett (unpainted).
-Soundtrack CD.
-Hardcover art book.
-DVD with making of, interviews and cutscenes (including the ones from the first games).
-A DVD containing both Thief Gold and Thief II updated to work with Windows XP/Vista/Windows 7.
-Posters and/or The City Map.

A little replica mechanical eye as a keyring or whatever is something I could get behind, same for an artbook. Action figures would just get tossed in the trash and I wouldn't be seen dead wearing video game branded clothing. That'd be worse than a wolfshirt.

I agree with whoever said that a map of the City would be a bad idea - part of the appeal is in the unknown, in allowing your imagination to fill in the blanks. Putting hard limits on the size, scope or layout (other than vague references we've already seen) just remove some of that thrill for me.
Anyway Thief isn't like the old Ultima games where a large scale map would actually be useful. Thief games are split up into relatively small and confined spaces - even TDS's "open" City sections were small and cramped.

speaking of Special Edition and Merchandise.

Take a look at the Bioshock 2 special edition:
http://g-ecx.images-amazon.com/images/G/01/videogames/detail-page/bioshock2.se.lg.jpg

It comes with a vinyl and cd of the musical score, a hardcover art book, and three Rapture propaganda posters.
Now think of something like that applied to Thief 4?

Maps for posters,
Game score on cd,
Artbook!?

I'm probably going to be ending up buying the Bioshock 2 special edition because for 40 more dollars than the game, I think the extra goodies are worth it..
But following that logic, it shouldn't be hard to try for something similar for Thief 4.. Maybe some goodies for nostalgic purposes, like concept art from the older games or fun stuff like that.

I was looking at the EM Store, and I noticed it says that for purchases of US $100 or more (before tax and shipping), we'll get an exclusive poster with our order. Is this a Deus Ex 3 poster, or is there a mystery Thief 4 poster? And if it's a T4 poster, is it just the logo?

I'm liking making this sort of stuff. :] But I think I like it too much to part with it. If I could easily make more pendants, I would consider selling them, but they're definitely something that either ends up great, or awful, depending on how into the project I am.

What I would like for Thief merchandise..
an arrow. Like a water arrow. I bet I could make one of those too, with a blue stone of some sort. It would be hella heavy though. if I made it full size.

besides that.. a cloth map would be awesome too. If we ever knew exactly what the map of the city looks like :P

jtr7
17th Apr 2010, 05:05
Now you know why a lot of art is expensive. It's often the price the artist feels they need to be paid to part with it forever, and if it's in a gallery, it's typically multiplied by 300%. Taking photos and making copies of the images helps, certainly.

The only way to make it easy to part with is to make many similar pieces to the point where it doesn't hurt to part with them, and you can keep your favorites, or find a price to cover time and materials at the very least. I personally get sick of the repetition, as I'm usually ready to move on to other things after having the idea gestate, grow, become, and birth. I've compromised with my feelings a couple of times, giving items as gifts to friends and family, so I can safely get used to not having it myself. Silly ain't it? It works. :p

Costs, shipping weight, people to make molds for the Thief-style lockpicks, factories to pour molten metal into molds, forget painting them, and then animals to skin, leather to tan, lead shot, wooden handle, thin cord to sew and bind them all together by hand, OR wood to lathe little baseballs bats (except for inclusion of the knobby bits), and dip in gray paint. Craziness. Enforcing age restrictions? Not possible.

People actually complained about the B:AA Batarangs being made of molded plastic. Well duh! And of course they actually threw them at things. Economics do not exist in this dojo!

You're assuming they go through all that to make the stuff themselves, when they could just make a bulk order from a retailer to save money on the blackjacks. The lockpicks wouldn't be any worse than the current fad where you include some figurine with the awesome edition. In fact, they could probably use the 3d printer thing that we're making our rings with XD to do it, and ordering enough they'd save a ton.

Also, they could make Keeper rings like what Razerstealth is doing. As you could always put a chain through the ring and wear it as a necklace if it didn't fit.

Maybe a Keeper puzzle box with a secret way to open it?

If they do make a collectors edition, I don't want something that I can get anywhere with the only difference being a thief logo stamped on it. I want something unique.

I'm assuming no such thing. You're assuming it's cheaper than it is. There's a reason Guitar Hero controllers are plastic and the wood versions cost as much as a real guitar. And a reason why the Batarangs were plastic, too. You'd be better off buying the real thing instead of expecting something real or close to real to be shipped with the game.

I'd expect the lockpicks to require an all-new facility to facilitate the process in bulk, and for the printing to be done in a limited edition:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TQoTro9WfbQ

Blackjacks are illegal enough that shipping them with games kids can buy or own rules them out. Metal shot and leather (or naugahyde and rayon), handmade in China or Taiwan by cheap labor--ugh. Lockpicks: I'd be truly impressed if they didn't look rubbish, and didn't easily get bent out of shape, corrode, or snap for lack of the proper alloy. Whatever is shipped, it has to be taken into account that people, especially children, will carry them to school or show them off and get in trouble. Kids in my school were getting in trouble for having shirukens, switchblades, jackknives, bullets, brass knuckles, and other illegal weapons, and they weren't threatening anyone, just showing them off.

These things will almost never be something for more than show, and will not be built for durability and actual use as if it was all real and close to fully functional.

It is that cheap as long as you buy enough - it's the money you save making a large and guaranteed sale for the retailer. With the lockpicks, I'd imagine they'd be the classic triangle and square picks from the old games - and they'd be useless in modern locks. If you plan to sell, let's say as low as 10,000 collector's editions, then you'd dealing with a nice bulk order of 20,000 picks still - and that gives you alot of buying leverage when it comes to asking your own price for the item you're requesting. If they don't bargain, then you don't use the item in the collector's edition, and they lose your sale - so it's in their best interest to deal with you so long as they aren't losing money.

As for the blackjacks, yeah, I remember the little problem that they had a while back with, I think the Godfather 2 game, where they shipped a promotional box with a set of brass knuckles and they got in trouble for it because it was illegal in some of the states they sent it to. Blackjacks are another item where sometimes it's illegal and sometimes it's not. It's ridiculous looking at trueswords.com and seeing that a giant wooden club with metal spikes is illegal in a state, but a sword isn't. The weapon laws are confusing.

I imagine plushie blackjacks wouldn't be a problem though, and you could actually use them on people guilt free.

they could make lock picks for this legal by making them twice as thick so they couldn't be used and i don't think it would look too bad either. As far as game swag goes the best was Modern Warfare 2′s Prestige Edition that had night vision goggles in it, the regular edition was about 60$ and the prestige edition was 150$. Never underestimate a games need to have bragging rights. Also maybe Garrett's worn notebook bound in leather and wrapped in an old cloth might be neat to get.

I have some ideas :).

1: A t-shirt with a picture of Benny on the front, standing in his drunk pose. There's dialogue below Benny in the traditional Thief font, saying "*Hic*...taffer!"

2: If sales go really well and EM can afford it, an actual piece of loot, modeled after a Thief valuable. It should be the grand prize of some kind of contest. :) Like a hammer icon made of real gold. There was a game company back in the 80s that actually gave away valuable treasures as grand prizes for a competition. The golden hammer would make a very nice promotion for Thief 4.

3: A t-shirt with a picture of Garrett on the front, with his back turned to you so you can only see his cloak. The text on the front says "Some people in this city are too rich for their own good." On the back, you can see Garrett facing you, a flash bomb in one hand, and a bag of gold in the other. The text on the back says "Luckily, they have me to give them a hand."

4: Costumes of our favorite factions. Some of us like to cosplay :). I'd love to dress up as a Hammerite or a Keeper. Haunts can be a great Halloween costume :D, with a sword or a hammer (not real of course :P).

5: A little purple bag that you can put coins in, just like the purses that guards sometimes carry.

I have some ideas :).

5: A little purple bag that you can put coins in, just like the purses that guards sometimes carry.

Yeah this would've been neat, especially if it was filled with a few coin replicas to make it jingle a bit. :D

Also, a Hammerite pendant to wear around your neck would've been fricking awesome.

Master Thief Edition.
Several variants.
(Have to remember, PS3, 360, and PC versions usually have different pre-order bonuses)

Each of the three comes with a different holy symbol from each of the three major groups in the City. One with a Hammer holy symbol, the other with a sculpture of The Eye (or equivalent pagan holy symbol), and the other with a Keeper glyph.

9. Last/Lost Glyph

And since the music and ambients will (or at least should) be dynamically generated via GRAMPS, the "soundtrack" would be taking snippets of this stuff as if playing through a level, and then recording it to CD. Similar to what was maybe done to make the Thief 2 "soundtrack" I listen to.

Yes, I know it's different for every playthrough, but it has the vibe and uniqueness of each level's ambients.

I'm frankly afraid of what kind of merchandise is coming.

This is why I never chose to encourage it...for fear of the appearance of adolescent merchandise, which would become somewhat of a mockery when contrasted with the depth of the reflected THIEF experience...Then again, the greater horror would be that this feared adolescent merch will reflect the depth of T4 perfectly...:(

Are there any shirts out there yet that can be purchased for Thi4f?

I'm a longtime Thi4f player an fan, coming off a 10 year hiatus. Just got a PS3 for xmas and thought I'd rejoin my thieving ways.

anybody out there remember Marcellous?

I was working on one of the more complex fan missions back in my college days, but then went on to graduate and got a CS job, so after spending all day on the PC didn't feel like going home to it. I remember having Kozmala do some voice acting for me and I created a trailer for it. I might have uploaded it, but I don't even remember for sure. I remember putting an insane number of hours into it. Didn't the original DromEd keep a count of the time you spent on your mission?

Thief 4: Keeper Annals edition.

Bonus DVD containing "Making of" materials, trailers, and "history of Thief' documentary.
Leather bound Keeper journal containing City backstory and information, concept art, and comments from developers as Keeper scribes (ie, Keeper D'Astrous)
Bonus game content, like an upgraded quiver capable of holding more arrows, the bow upgrade, and the keys to the Alarus extension.

Chances are that if you've been posting on this board for the last week, you're a die-hard THIEF fan. And as such, chances are you'd jump at the chance to get a collector's edition of the game. I know I will.

If EM does offer one, what would you like to see included in it, aside from the game itself?

My thoughts:

- Concept Art book
- Soundtrack
- Cloth map of The City.
- Replica of Garrett's mechanical eye(or "The Eye"), with miniature pedestal.
- Fire Arrowhead USB drive. (glows when plugged in)
- Thief mousepad

What do you think the Thief Collector's Edition should include?

Platinumoxicity
17th Mar 2013, 11:58
- Cloth map of The City.

Nope. Never. If you make a full map, you destroy the mystique of the unknown nature of the metropolis and you also make it infinitely smaller than the real unimaginable scale. You can't have a full map, just like you can't have the full City as a seamless playable area. In both cases you destroy the fundamental essence of that element.

Plus you might accidentally retcon important things out of existence and utterly annihilate the possibility of any of the many fan missions ever having taken place because their locations can no longer exist. The fan missions that have been made, actually fit the game because those places might be in the City somewhere. If we knew exactly what the whole City is like, there would be no room of any of them.

I only have my TDP box. :( My T2 box vanished without a trace. I still have the manuals and CD cases though.

And yeah. a collector's edition should be a big box. The problem is that collector's editions are probably limited pre-order exclusives, and people should stop pre-ordering games. All games. As long as you keep pre-ordering, the devs and publishers think they can get away with anything. I'm not going to pre-order Thief 4 because I actually want to find out if the game is good first. You can't do that by playing a demo because those don't exist, or by reading "reviews" because they are actually just advertisements.

Yeah, too bad, really. I kinda wish they would still release PC games in big boxes with good manuals. But meh, all we get are lousy manuals, only with instructions on how to put the disc in your DVD drive and crappy DVD box.:(

I, personally, stopped pre-ordering games long ago. Although, I made a slip with Diablo 3 and pre-ordered it. Was a good reminder why I stopped pre-ordering games. TotalBiscuit made a good video on why not to pre-order games.

Concept art book and soundtrack at the bare minimum. Preorder bonus, one-use code, collector's edition. Those two items are always my favorite.

Mousepad and map I'd pass on. But a mousepad with a rough map on it though would be interesting. Charcoal on yellowed paper, something stylized. Mousepads never really give out, and prior to 2008 I didn't even use one.

A small eye would be very cool, and the USB drive sounds nifty. Would it be possible for the drive to come with Thief Gold a-la the Starcraft 2 collector's edition which came with the first Starcraft? I think Thief Gold was under a gig in size and would be a cool extra, even if I already own three copies of the game.

At the very least an artbook and a making of DVD. Looking at the Deus ex collectors edition I think we'll be safe. http://media.pcgamer.com/files/2011/04/Deus-Ex-Collectors-Edition.jpg
It had the game, an artbook, the soundtrack, a making-of movie,an animated comic and an Adam Jensen Figurine!! Oh, and a ton of ingame items..

This could all transfer very well to thief. Although I hope there will be something special and unique to thief in there (obviously it would have to be instead of a figurine). Maybe a piece of iconic loot, or that keeper relic which he's holding in the screenshots (most likely it will be important to the plot).

(did not see a general thread for this)

One thing which annoyed me with Dishonored is that the special pre-order edition came with a really nice set of Tarot style playing cards and a card game oriented around it's game mythos; but the video game itself only mentioned it in passing between two guards chatting about it. Nowhere could the main character sit down and play with another despite plenty of opportunities to fit it in. Maybe they will with DLC, but it was a noticeable over-site for those of us who pre-ordered.

Still would love to have one or two decent playable in-game games for the new Thief...include cheating!

Kazzic
24th Mar 2013, 05:20
Heh, the cards are pretty cool. Can't for the life of me figure out how to shuffle 'em.

Garrett pulls up a chair and plays a few rounds for some information. The catch is, everyone playing is cheating, you just need to cheat better. Like playing Bull**** ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cheat_%28game%29 )

I must admit that I'm a sucker for collector editions (only if they're reasonably priced and have items worthy to be in a CE, of course).

Seeing as having multiple editions seem to be a common occurrence with games these days, I wouldn't be surprised if Thief had its own few special editions.

And I'm all for some jewellery and an artbook. Throw in a poster too!

Dear Eidos Montreal/Square Enix,

when I saw an unboxing video of Deus Ex HR - Collectors Edition I noticed, that the DVDs were placed in a cheap slipcase (made of cardboard) and not in an amaray case.

It is a reason why I prefer the normal edition of Deus EX HR.

Yes, I know, it's crazy, but is it possible, that the Thief Collectors Editon could come with an amaray box inside or as an alternative with an inlay, so fans, who prefer amaray, could place it in their own case?

(Yes, a registration for just this appeal. :D)

I don't know, how other people see this? Maybe they prefer slipcases for their collection?

Well, yes, kind of -- I thought that's what you were asking. The DXHR one was commissioned, so thought it was an art request to be compensated somehow (and the cards manufactured by EM) rather than just for fun. In the end, I don't know that I want to design a deck, but if it was commissioned, I'd consider it more (as I'm sure others would, too).
