View Full Version : Pictures thread (now with colored pencil art!)

Well, I've been looking through a bit and can't find a purely pictures thread just to post DX pictures, etc. So I decided to start one up. I'll make the first entry. This is a stereogram I made of the DX logo using 3DMiracle. Just unfocus your vision!

If it doesn't work at first, change your angle.

^Try putting your face really close to the image and letting your eyes loose focus, then slowly move away from the screen without changing focus.
I found it much easier to see by making it smaller because of my laptop screen.

I don't think you can see it easily if you have one very dominant eye (and one "lazy eye" as they call them) like I have (still cant see it either). It requires you to centralise your vision instead of relying on your dominant eye to focus.

Spyhopping

They are apparently easier to see when they are on paper as opposed to a computer screen

This animated stereogram is easier to see (for me) than a still one
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Stereogram_Tut_Animated_Shark.gif
It helps you "train" yourself on how to see still autostereograms, there are instructions.

It's to do with how your point of focus converges "behind" the image which is difficult (or impossible) to maintain if you have problems with one of your eyes.

imported_van_HellSing
11th Dec 2008, 16:41
My left eye is much weaker than my right eye, but I can still see the pictures.

This is how I describe how to see autostereograms to any of my friends who don't know the technique yet:

First, concentrate on an object about an arm's length from you. Next, without loosing focus on that object, put your finger pointing upward between you and the object. You should see two transparent fingers. This "double vision" is crucial to seeing the images.

Now experiment a bit, and you should be able to master relaxing your eyes so you can see things double at will, and change the distance between the "doubled" objects.

Now, look at the picture and find a repeating pattern. Use your "double vision" so that a distinctive part of the pattern overlocks with it's nearest neigbor. Now, without loosing this focus, try to see the whole image.

Well, I'm 18, and while I never smoked pot or feel the need to, I know it's something I'm gonna do to experience it. Have it your way, of course, but I had a lot of fun drinking. Besides, making an idiot out of yourself is part of the fun.

Well, people that do drink and become intoxicated miss out on 90% of their livers ;)

There is so much joy out there that is so much better than what you can find in a bottle, and the contents of that bottle just might make you miss out!

K^2
28th Dec 2008, 07:12
That's absolutely not true. You miss out on certain things whether you chose to drink or not. You miss out on most when you chose to drink a lot and often. But if you chose not to drink at all, you still miss out on more things than if you occasionally chose to drink in moderation. And I think everyone should get completely hammered at least once in their life. If you do, you miss a day. If you don't, that's an experience you'll never have, and that's worse. Just make sure you got some people you can trust to help you out when you can't function anymore.

NICE BOAT!

@K^2:
You always miss out on something when you make a choice. If you can choose A or B, but not both, you must either A, which is also !B, or you must choose B, and !A. Therefore, the discussion on whether you "miss out on something" is rather moot. What really is worth discussing is whether what is lost is something you'd actually not want to loose. Myself, I don't think I'd really want to loose my higher brain function. I've lost them once or twice to sleep deprivation, and I find it frustrating to not be able to understand things.like Ghost in the Machine (link (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dualism_(philosophy_of_mind))). Also, the depressing effects of alcohol is something I'm afraid of.

But this is not alcohol.com/forums, so let's get back to discussing DX pictures. No, I can't see the DX logo.
@ostapov: Lemme' guess, you like the violent approach.
I allways tried to keep the Binoculars even when I had the sniper rifle, to kind of pretend I was a government agent who'd need them, but nooooo, I lways needed that space for a scramble grenade or an Aug Canister.

You are looking for a hidden image related to DX.
The image is 3-dimensional and stands up/out from the background behind. ;)

Kind of stare hard into the 1-dimensional picture you see. Then try to relax your eyes and let them go out of focus. Try not to blink. :p

Let us know if you see it - that's the exciting bit, hehe. :D

Actually, the point IS to lose control. It is sometimes fun to not be in full control of what you say and do. It makes you feel loose, relaxed, or if you're in a party - pumped up. It's easier to dance, easier to hit on girls, easier to get in a fight. You can keep asking "what's the point?", but fact is a lot of people do enjoy it, and until you've tried you won't really know. I seriously recommend you get hammered ;).

I can't the DX logo, BTW.

^^Skulls? That does sound quite strange!
Try to go really close to the picture and let your eyes loose focus, then move away from it slowly whilst letting your eyes maintain their lost focus. Try it a couple of times. I can just get it for a few seconds when I do this but as of yet I haven't seen any skull!

I agree that it can be fun but drinking just makes me feel ill now, I don't enjoy it that much anymore. Its something fun to do whilst your still free and young, but I can only praise people who have chosen never to drink. The most enjoyable things in life can't possibly be enjoyed when drunk

NO TENTACLES
Now that the Russians have spoken (phew!) I can confirm: there are no tentacles in DX3! Indeed, what some of the prior magazines had been reporting on was a very old concept that does not appear in the game. Remember when I said some things had already changed...?

I knew that they were removed. But it's still absolutely hysterical that that was even a concept. Don't worry, it won't do any harm. The word of mouth is already spread.

And before you go all passive-agressive, I'm not saying your opinions should be disregarded.
I agree with you on a good number of things, however you have jumped the gun with some of the criticism, especially you and WhatsHisFace.
At least when Carlo complains you get the impression he thought it out about the information that was available, however when one of you two does it, it's usually off-topic, trolling, or just grasping for conclusions over one phrase or two spoken out of tone.

I haven't seen ONE constructive post from either of you two at all. You just like to point out what's wrong without a single arguement on how to "fix" it and why.

I am constructive. I just give you guys enough credit by assuming you can see what's wrong, and that I don't have to explain it to you. I'm not going to give directions to Eidos Montreal on how to fix this game, because, in all seriousness, they don't give a damn. They have their design document, a budget, a deadline, and self-absorption to the point where they don't think anyone should have any problems with making a drastically different game from Deus Ex 1, while still calling their game "Deus Ex."

Yeah, they were never even confirmed as being in the game so I think there is some confusion going on.

The tentacle-dude image wasn't a stand-alone picture detailing a specific augmentation. It was only taken from a projection screen in the area of the subway station... possibly some sort of company advertisement.
You can just see the edge of the projection screen to the centre right of this scan of the magazine page:

I'm generally not a person to give advice on art, and you might even know this already, but this one reminded me of an article about an artist who painted dying people. When asked how he manages to make faces look so drained and lifeless, he said that he simply uses a ruler. Apparently, an excessively symmetric face does not look alive. If you take some photos of people and play with mirror tool, you'll see that there is some truth to it. At any rate, faces are rarely symmetric. Mirroring the half that you like better saves work, but it has some negative side effects. I don't know what you were going for here, of course, but just something to keep in mind.

Still looks very bad*ss.

facepalm
23rd Mar 2009, 12:29
The perfect symmetry contributes to the lifeless wax doll-effect, but the rigid perspective, monotonous skin color and flat lighting play a role as well. There's a side view of him somewhere on my HDD, and both of them were meant to serve as a reference for a 3d-model, but I never got around to working on it. This was one of those afternoon projects that you start and mess around with for a while, but completely forget the next day.

Mirroring the other half was not only a time saving measure, but a wrist saving one as well. If you've ever tried to draw accurately with a cheapo 50€ wacom, you know it's painful. Like many people I prefer to lay the ground work down on paper before continuing on a computer.

Thief 4 should be made on incredible technology and not the Crystal Dynamics engine. At this point there's no reason not to have an open-world city where you can leap across rooftops and climb up building sides to loot every building you can. A CDE-powered Thief 4 just wouldn't cut it.

Careful. Or you'll turn Thief into GTA and wonder wtf happened. The open city environment moments were well done in TDS but I can really see them getting annoying very fast if the city is the size of mainland England. I wouldn't be opposed to a classic Thief setup with just the missions themselves and no open city. But obviously I'd prefer a little bit of city in there.

Well, I'd never want The Elder Scrolls: Thief Edition... but a "hub area" the size of something out of Crysis would be quite nice. Thief 3's hub-city was a little too small to really do it's own concept justice. Still a fantastic game though.

The cradle was good. I really liked Captain Moira's offshore manor. That level brought back memories of Markham's Isle from Thief 2. Good times. Plus the final mission to the Wieldstrom Museum was epic. It really reminded me of the First City Bank and Trust mission from Thief 2.

Some of the levels I didn't like were the two Hammerite/Pagan levels near the beginning. I think I've played them too many times or something but those levels make me want to stop playing altogether. I also didn't like the Sunken Citadel level. It was way too small and mundane. The Lost city levels from the first two games were a much better example of a mysterious ancient underground city.

It needed an epic Thieves Highway mission like Angel Watch in Thief 2.

Yeah, sorry... didn't explain myself well. I know its Christian (his parents only live up the road from me :p ) and from the Equilibrium movie, but the image has been photoshopped hasn't it? I'm sure there must be an original one out there to check.
When I said I couldn't make out if it was male or female, I was assuming the image had been 'tweaked' with a smoother look to the complexion and softer lip structure? So, thats why I thought it was a deliberate attempt to be androgynous.

Yeah, I have seen those ones. Christian definitely looks all-man in them, ha! :D

Doesn't look rugged enough. I always liked to think of JC Denton with a film noir detective. Not clean cut, but like an old school detective film. I'll asume you all know what I'm getting at by my film noir idea.

Think Jack Nicholson in China Town, not that.

The only problem is the way he talks. He moves his mouth all weird and it's kinda annoying. He needs to change around his voice and the way he talks a lot to get the part right. He slurs too much, and JC's speech is very clear.

I'd hope that JC wouldn't be as uptight about his appearance as those pictures suggest. He's more relaxed than that. Needs some stubble, and a hair out of place.

Regardless, they are cool pics

Then he's absolutely the right person for the job, because Christian Bale changes his accent in nearly every film he's in. He's actually Welsh. :D

Correction: He's 'Little England Beyond Wales' Welsh.

Well that's really my point. He changes his accent in every movie, and as a result of trying to change it he ends up with a weird way of talking. E.g. in the Batman movies he talks weird with his upper lip sticking way out which makes it sound funny.

I'm gonna say no to Bale, though he would get the voice sort of right hearing how he's chosen to do batman. (AHEM)

Simply put, his jaw line just isn't there. He either needs to gain some weight, or we need someone more rugged. It's just completely unimposing.

Keifer Sutherland anyone? you know, JACK BAUER!?!?!? Who else could play JC if not HIM? :thumb:

Bale is very disciplined with the whole weight thing. He lost over 60 pounds after being normal weight-ish for the Machinist to be a ridiculously skinny person, then gained a ton of muscle and weight back for Batman.

yes, an amazing transformation for anyone who's seen the film

Been having problems uploading, because net was slow and unreliable. I tried uploading it two times, and they both showed the full picture when I viewed it, but later didn't. Hopefully it works now.
