View Full Version : Concerning the email subscription

Dear Square-Enix,
I'm not quite sure this is the most suited subforum to report this "issue", but it seems the closest to me.

The problem is that I keep receiving NEWSLETTERS, MONTHLY NEWSLETTERS, HITMAN ABSOLUTION NEWSLETTER,
YOUNAMEITNEWSLETTERS from you all the time.

In my settings, [SETTINGS] -> [PROFILE SETTINGS], I have absolutely EVERYTHING UNCHECKED.

That is, everything for Email Opt Ins , Email Genres & Email Products.

Because I believe in your good faith, I can only think this is a bug (right?).

On the bottom of each newsletter is the following mention:

"You are receiving this e-mail because you have opted-in for it through
SQUARE ENIX MEMBERS. Login to your account and go to your profile to edit your subscription."

This is (more than obviously) wrong since I have had everything UNCHECKED in my settings for the last 6 months, at the VERY least.

So please by all means, fix this "bug".

Thank you so much.

Like can anyone indicate me how to get the mail sub. I'm always missing what's going on the store, or the promotonal mails. Thanks in advance if someone can indicate the way.;)

Log in on either this (http://eu.square-enix.com/en/home) or this (http://na.square-enix.com/us/) site, click "My Profile" - "Settings" and check the "SQUARE ENIX will send me information and updates on games and products"-box. Don't forget to save. ^_-

Could someone tell me if i still receive all my e-mails from this site even though the .co.uk and .com on my account is different to one another? I am told that it doesn't matter and i should still receive the e-mails even though mine is .com and i put .co.uk on my profile?

Any help be much appreciated.

I continuously get a newsletter but when I go to the site and log in, there is no option to be unchecked. I got 3 newsletters for December.

I'm having the same exact issue.

Same thing. I receive a ton of newsletters the 'unsubscribe' & 'Edit your subscriptions' links both just take me to the NA homepage. In my profile the only subscription related checkbox is "SQUARE ENIX will send me information and updates on games and products" which is unchecked. I even get multiple of the same exact newsletters to the same email address.

All I want to know is how to stop Square Enix from sending me unsolicited e-mails that I never voluntarily signed up for. I bought FFVII during a steam sale and was already pretty mad that I was forced to create an account here just to play the game. I did NOT check the box to receive spam from Square Enix, and I have verified that that box remains unchecked, but in the last 4 days I have gotten multiple e-mails. Each has what appears like it should be two links at the bottom ("Unsubscribe" | "Edit Your Subscription") but is in fact one link which takes me to the main North America Square page.

This is a dispicable business practice. I don't care about your other games and I don't want ot be notified of anything. And before you all jump up and say I can just mark the sending address as spam and let my email sort it for me, why should I have to do that? How about Square just doesn't send me spam that I specifically told them I did not want?

tattooedpariah
30th Jan 2014, 20:58
How do you make them stop? That box is unchecked, I never checked it in the first place, and never said I wanted to get their junk mail. but I've been getting duplicates of their stupid newsletter for the last week or so.

If unchecking the "SQUARE ENIX will send me information and updates on games and products"-box doesn't work, then contact customer support (https://support.na.square-enix.com/contact.php?id=496&la=1) and inform them about the issue.

Despite turning off the very tiny and easily missable "SQUARE ENIX will send me information and updates", Squeenix continues to spam my account. Do they not want us to buy games from them? I don't buy games from spammers.

I've tried for a month now. I cannot unsubscribe from the e-mail newsletter. The "unsubscribe" and "edit your subscription" links at the bottom of the e-mail both lead directly to http://na.square-enix.com/us/home and no actual location to unsubscribe. I go into my account settings and "receive e-mails from square enix" is unchecked already. How do I stop receiving e-mails from your newsletter?

Lyrika

Same here "SQUARE ENIX will send me information and updates on games and products" is unchecked and yet I still receive promotional emails from products I do not own. You are required by law to make it possible to unsubscribe.

I'm also having this issue. I'm fairly sure I never checked the appropriate check box in the first place, but it's certainly unchecked now and yet I still receive regular emails. I ended up throwing the address into my blocked list, but I'd rather not have to do that.

I've been trying to get myself off the newsletter as well but to no avail, unchecking the "receive email" box hasn't worked. After chatting with an agent on the UK support site I just found out it's impossible to have one's account deleted although there should be a way to get yourself off the news letter. Supposedly if you contact a member of the support team for the region where your account is registered (North America, UK, etc) they can get you off the mailing list. This was the link I was given for North american support from the agent I chatted with (http://support.na.square-enix.com/) and here is the (UK https://support.eu.square-enix.com). I'm told there is a chat function for each region's support team. I hope this helps. Also, UK support does have a "chat with agent" option that the North America site doesn't seem to have so it looks like it's just email support.

It's a shame we have to jump through so many hoops to do something so simple.

*Edit

So it seems the "contact us" page is really buried and almost impossible to find, at least it was for me. After getting to the support page of your respective region (see above) you need to click the "Square Enix Account" link in the "Recently Updated Titles" section towards the bottom of the page. From there click "contact" which is just above the search bar, the big envelope icon. The next page should have a "Get Support" button at the bottom of the page. The next page is pretty self explanatory, I put in Account/Billing and Unsubscribe for Contact Category and Contact Sub-category respectively. For Contact details a simple "unsubscribe from emails" should do it. After filling in this information click next to go to proceed. The next page will either have links to things related to your issue or say "We were not able to locate the support information related to your issue.
Please select "Next" to proceed.". After clicking next you are then brought that will allow you to contact support directly, either by email or chat depending on your region.

I called a couple months ago, got on hold with someone. After a while, they told me to "recheck and uncheck" the box. After doing that, it was supposed to stop the mail. However, it hasn't stopped. And when I asked the representative to verify my lack of subscription, he said he wouldn't be able to do that from his end.

So, looks like you just need to add it to your spam list.

Here's what I've tried over the years without success:

Unsubscribe link in email
Preferences in any account systems
Contacting the privacy policy contact address. Currently privacy@esrb.org
Talking to a live customer service agent
Simply replying to a marketing email asking to opt-out.

So this is my 6th method of attempting to opt-out.

Does anyone know of a way that actually works?

I'm under the impression it's impossible to opt-out of marketing from Square Enix. Except for recently, over the last 2 years I have not purchased a single product because of this and it's likely my last. I am not shy of expressing my complaints with others. I have a habit of submitting these messages to spamcop because legally SE should not market to anyone who has not had contact with the organization for a year and has explicitely opted out.

I didn't start receiving the Square Enix Members emails until a few months ago, but have had similar frustrations attempting to stop them. The unsubscribe link just goes to the main square-enix.com page; the opt-in/out field on my Settings page is totally ineffective; and a support ticket I filed has gone completely unacknowledged.

If anyone knows of any working method of unsubscribing, I would love to know about it.

In the US, the CAN-SPAM Act stipulates that any email whose primary purpose is advertisement/commercial promotion (which these emails certainly are) must provide an opt-out mechanism that removes the recipient from the sender's mailing list within 10 business days. It also stipulates that the method by which a recipient can opt-out must be obvious. Failing to comply with these stipulations can incur serious fines.

Since the advertised methods of unsubscribing aren't functional, I have to assume that there's some other way which I've missed (or, that an honest technical mistake is preventing the mechanism from working). Otherwise, I can only resort to filing a complaint with the FTC (https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov).

Okay, about a week ago, I sent a notice to Square Enix through your help system, to be removed from receiving mailings from your company. I had already unchecked the box in my profile about not receiving further offers, but that did not stop me getting a Thief pre order notice. And today, I got a notice for Final Fantasy X/X-2.

This is the last of three attempts I am making to be removed from your marketing service. If I receive another email advertisement notification from Square Enix, I am forwarding it and any future emails to the FTC, and the BBB.

Since we do not wish to receive or hold any Material either ‘in confidence’ or at all, you acknowledge and agree that:

1. Any Material, which you choose to submit to us, is disclosed at your discretion and has not been solicited by us.

I'm not into advertising but here's how I see it. Manipulation. At least now and for some time to come. When will the leap be made to valuable information? Stop forcing these "creative works, games, film scripts"... etc into a numbers game and give me control. If I don't want to see it don't take it personal. If I'm passionate about a product then give me a gateway to more. At the very least fix the unsubscribe button.

By the way I cancelled my SquareEnix account for about 2 years which didn't work either. It did however cut back on most marketing email. I have called customer service support about this issue and nothing gets resolved. I continue to receive emails from your company despite unchecking the box in my account preferences. 10 days after you first contact customer support, submit a complaint here (www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov) to the FTC for spam.

It is illegal for Square to not act upon unsubscription notifications within ten days and not having a working unsubscribe process for their advertisements, Square knows this is a problem, they know a lot of people are having this problem for up to a month now and they obviously don't care since they continue to send out advertisements.

If enough people complain and they continue to do nothing about it then they can be hit with a couple hundred thousand dollars fine (It depends on how long they don't act on this) and possibly jail time. If that doesn't get them to straighten up their act then I do not know what will.

Can't confirm if it worked since I just tried it, but I found an unsubscribe-link in the headers of the email.
It was in the format of:
List-Unsubscribe: <mailto:squareenixxxxxxxxxxx@email-square-enix.com?subject=unsubscribe>

You can get the header information by viewing the message source. I used Thunderbird so Ctrl+U did the trick. Once you get that, my guess is that you can send an email to the address with the subject of unsubscribe and it will take you off the list of whatever service they use to send out emails. Good luck.

Since I've contacted customer support twice and nothing has changed, I can only assume that Square Enix is going to continue to spam me (and the rest of us). I will be reporting each and every email to the FTC. If this continues another month, I will take Square Enix to small claims court as a spammer. Since they won't bother to show up, I'll win. When they refuse to pay, I'll have the sheriff of Los Angeles County arrest the highest management person of Square Enix North America as a convicted spammer.

Or Square Enix can stop sending emails to people that UNCHECKED the box.

Man I hope that this works. I've had a support ticket open with them for over 2 weeks, and i just get yet another email every few days saying they should get to my support ticket soon. I've started hate posting on their facebook pages. I absolutely despise this company by now - i have no games linked to this account and yet I can't even just outright delete the account either. I have been left with no options but lots of spam. If this reply-to unsubscribe works I will be eternally grateful. Update on this-- it seems like, whatever issue had been preventing the "unsubscribe" links from working, has been fixed.

On February 26th I received a "Square Enix Members Monthly Newsletter" email, from which I clicked the unsubscribe link. I haven't received any more email from Square Enix since that time. There have been sufficient events since then, which I have not been emailed about - the Final Fantasy X re-release, the PC release of Deus Ex: The Fall, online store sales, etc. - that I believe the unsubscription was successful.

I've been trying to unsubscribe for more than 10 years. Every opt-out capability SE provides is fake. Has anyone been able to get them to stop sending marketing email?

Yes I have tried the following:
unsubscribing from a number of systems they've had over the years
contacting support via email, phone, live support
the methods outlined in privacy policies
cancelling my SE accounts
filing a formal complaint with the FTC
submitting every marketing email to spam@uce.gov
submitting every marketing email to spamcop.net

I noticed an old thread in this forum with about 5 dozen other people having the same problem, but it also seems that the site has changed since then, because what they report seeing is different than what I'm seeing.

When I receive Square Enix newsletters, there's an Unsubscribe button at the bottom. This redirects to my "Manage Email Preferences" page for my account:
https://xmail.square-enix.com/fe/track/unsub/nupimox4nohe/1657e2a0e325f94dc42091353abd45d8/192/en/iiTYpMUV5WQKPxP8psF1YdKtpxzFmjfKGWeOJXKMzi1jVqzuoOBLUKLv26xBoHdh

However, this page is nearly blank. It has a few checkboxes next to some games, but there is absolutely nothing on this page where you can click to save your preferences. So if you uncheck all the boxes, it does nothing, because there's nothing for you to save those choices. All you can do is close the page, and the next time you open your email preferences again, the checkboxes are still checked.

How in the hell do you stop getting email from Square Enix?? This is absurd. As an aside, I find Square Enix's website design fairly ridiculous in general, particularly the customer support navigation.

Same. I've been trying to figure out how to unsubscribe for months. Having previously read the other thread here in the forums, as mentioned by the OP, and threads on various other websites, it seems like SE has a solid history of not allowing folk to opt-out of marketing emails. At best this makes their web developers / system admins seem incompetent. Starting to feel more like a sketchy / borderline illegal business practice though.

Badgering people with ads is a good way to get people to hate your guts.
Your email service is a freaking disaster, SE. Fix it!

Hello.

I continue to receive Square Enix emails. I have attempted to unsubscribe, but the unsubscribe system doesn't seem to be working at all.

I would like to quit receiving these nuisance emails.

The last one I received was Adventures of Mana is AVAILABLE NOW on PS Vita.

Sincerely,
Tristan

Same problem here. It takes me to an unsubscribe page, but there is no way to save changes so when I click "unsubscribe" again, it shows the same thing as before, as if I never changed anything. I tried to unsubscribe the first time about a week or two ago. I'm still getting the emails.

I had to submit a complaint to the ICO due to Square not giving a true Opt Out option (unsubscribe link in their emails takes you to a page that doesn't update). Does anyone know any way that I can actually unsubscribe from their emails?

The call to unsubscribe is blocked and gives a response on 403 Forbidden

I'm having the same issue. I can check and uncheck any item however there is no way to save my choices. When I return to the page at a later time it still reflects the default settings.

This is garbage. I tried signing in to update my email preferences because the unsubscribe link doesn't work. Now I have two accounts somehow. Even with that, the unsubscribe function STILL doesn't work.

If you're in Canada, I urge you to report Square Enix as I have. You can do so here: http://www.fightspam.gc.ca/eic/site/030.nsf/frm-eng/MMCN-9EZV6S

This is incredibly poor customer service!

I'm getting the same problem. Tried unsubscribing from all emails, a few times now and nothing happens... so, looked a little deeper into what's going on.

If you look at some web debug tools, you will likely see that every time you click on a subscribe/unsubscribe toggle there is a POST to "https://xmail.square-enix.com/unsub/blahblah..." and it will fail with a 403 (Forbidden). This appears to fail for both subscriptions and unsubscriptions. My suspicion is that their server isn't setup correctly to receive the POSTs or it could be that the destination URL is not correct. Until someone fixes their server or form on their end, it won't work. #TestingFail!

Fix it fellas!

Having the same issue (AJAX requests return 404 errors). US users should send a complaint to the FTC. There's an option specifically for company's that don't honor unsubscribe requests. Go to https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/GettingStarted?NextQID=280&Url=%23%26panel1-5 , click continue, then select "I cannot opt out of receiving e-mails from this company". Proceed as directed from there.

When I see the manage email preferences page, i see a bunch of sliders for receiving emails, but there is no way for me to "click submit" or determine which way is on or off. And every time i reload the page no changes are saved.

any ideas?

Good question, even with every individual game set to off, it still constantly spams me with garbage for all of them and when I set the overall setting to off it won't stay and every time I check it's back to on... and Square-Enix is still spamming me. This really needs to stop.

There is no way from what I can see to unsubscribe to the newsletters. This is illegal in the UK ( https://www.gov.uk/marketing-advertising-law/direct-marketing )!

I was forced to create this account in order to play a game that does not even show up on my account! There was no option to opt out of emails during the sign up which is also illegal here!

I am now going to try to contact someone at Square Enix and make a formal complaint. If I am unsuccessful then I will be reporting this matter to the relevant authorities in the UK.

*EDIT* I have found a contact form on their support site: http://support.eu.square-enix.com/contacttop.php?id=612&la=2
Click "Get Support" to start the process. Good luck :)

Have had similar problems. Every time I attempt to disable emails via the link provided it doesn't work. They are re-enabled when I revisit the link.

Have filed and FTC compliant. Probably won;t do anything but hopefully someone will show this awful company that they are BREAKING THE LAWS of multiple countries.

i have already tried the "support ticket" they just showed me "how to unsubscribe" which obviously we have all tried. tonight i messaged Driber, the "admin" so we'll see what he says, though another mod just said to contact support... going to call tomorrow and bring this insane, years-long, ongoing situation to their attention. if i end up getting through that is. i've read people stay on hold by phone or live chat for hours...

here's the thread in the other section:
http://forums.eu.square-enix.com/showthread.php?t=190681

here's the phone support contact info:

There's no way to unsubscribe and that's been the case for years.

I have added it to the spam folder. Where all your emails belong.
