View Full Version : URGENT: Patch for TR:U that fixes NVidia 7series lagging/crashing/freezing

Hi, are there any plans to create a patch / driver update to fix the freezing problems. I understand this problem is fairly common.

I exceed system requirements and have the latest drivers installed and still cannot run the game smoothly even on lowest graphics settings. Like others on this forum with the same problem, I am able to run other games (Crysis, Dead Space, Fallout 3 etc) on the highest settings with no problems.

Is there any advice you can offer, or any reassuance that this problem is being dealt with.

Cheers

Stu

Thanks for the info. Do you think Magic ISO would affect gameplay?

This seems to be happening mostly with the 7 series of cards from what i have seen in most peoples posts. It's not going to be caused by magic ISO, and unless there is anything hogging processing power closing processes won't make much odds on a system above the requirements. If you read everyone elses posts you'll see that they can play other games fine just not this one (even on lowest settings). That makes it a problem with the game being incompatible with certain systems. Somebody on the dev team needs to look onto it and sort something out rather than people just telling each other they need a better PC!

SO, I've done some research because I also meet requirement to play TR:U but the game just freezes after the first start cinematic on the first load screen. I've browsed through this (and other fora) and this seems to be a recurring problem.

I am using Nvidia Geforce Go 7600 and am also able to play similar games without problems...

We can only hope that they are working on some kind of fix, patch that cures this disease!

Some examples (from this forum only):
The screeen turnes blue and this message appears:
stop: 0x0000007E (0xC0000005, 0xBFB98817, 0xBABE960C, 0xBABE9308)
nv4_disp.dll-Address BFB98817 base at BF9D3000, DateStamp 44da4897

After that my computer shuts down.
Display Devices
---------------
Card name: NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GT
Manufacturer: NVIDIA
Chip type: GeForce 7600 GT

I exceed system requirements and have the latest drivers installed and still cannot run the game smoothly even on lowest graphics settings. Like others on this forum with the same problem,
I am able to run other games (Crysis, Dead Space, Fallout 3 etc) on the highest settings with no problems.
Display Devices

Card name: NVIDIA GeForce 7900 GTX

TRU stutters all the time and is unplayable. My system meets the minimum requirements and almost meets the recommended requirements. I have set everything to minimum at it still stalls all the time,
even though its do at least 50 frames. I have updated all my drivers. What the hell!

Same here, I have NVIDIA GeForce 7600GT, and the game stutters even on lowest settings. There are moments when the stuttering stops and the game runs smoothly which means that it is not issue with my system. So please, release patch for this as soon as possible.

We too have this problem but with the 8series
Owning 2 pc's meeting the requirements to play TR: U, after 3days we still cant play it...
its really frustrating!:mad2:
PC 1 is running on XP, directX 9, Nvidia 8600GTS
PC 2 is running Vista, dirextX 10, Nvidia 8800GTX
both have the newest drivers installed
same as other people we have no problems playing other similar games

PC 1 gets the blue screen and auto resets
PC 2 doesn't even load the game, window stays black

So many people with the same problem and still no response from Eidos?!
I hope there will be a patch of some sort very soon!
Cause 50Euro is a whole lot of money for a game you can't even play
Seems to me there is a lack of serious testing before bringing games on the market...

CD put this in the readme, which makes me think they are unlikely to attempt to fix it. They blame it on the drivers for nVidia, which is another pointer that they have no intention to fix the problem.

Does anyone know if there's a way to lobby nVidia to work on this?

I recommend a google search on "Tomb Raider Underworld Problem.

Hi, well you guessed it, I've got the same problem to!
My Dell XPS M1710 laptop, core 2 duo 3ghz-Nvidia 7950GTX-4Gb ram, can't run the game either!:mad2: in comparison, Crysis,FarCry 2,Stalker run without a problem, and on medium high settings!
I sometimes get reasonable framerates (low settings) but most of the time it's stuttering, and if anything happens beyond regular gameplay the game crashes!
Returning the game to the shop is not an option because they do not accept returns on opened software, but if nothing happens I do want my money back from Eidos!

Now for a small bottom-line question. . .
Was there any indication of these problems during the TRU Demo?
(The answers to that might become as interesting as Eidos PR news?) :o
This is off-topic, but I had to update RAD BINK just to get that .bnk movie to play?
(I have seen Japanese games that fail, just because of one small media driver.)

Nah, the demo was just threw the Direct3D error! :nut: I kid, I kid.

I did some Googling and all I can find is related to some PR spin-doctoring. All in all, given the sum total of the problems with the game, my interest in hacking together some dock-based upgrades for my laptop and attempting to run the game are diminishing quite a bit. :(

It might be Shader2, instead Shader3, but that beats the heck out of nothing from Eidos/CD folks.

How does that even work?

Looks like they're attempting to mod the game code (working back from the EXE) to force shader 2 support. Presumably there would be some loss in graphic quality, but if it looks like Legend or Anniversary, I'm happy. I really think CD and Eidos missed the mark badly with forcing shader 3 on people.

I also get the black scree, seems to be related to sound, because if I disable onboard sound the game works ok.

Could it be a problem with non directx 9.0c compliant sound hardware?

Try reducing hardware acceleration for the sound card. That usually clears up sound driver issues.

I also have this problem, I exceed requirements except for the graphic card (GeForce 7900 GS). All the other games I play work fine, on highest settings.

The TRU demo was amazingly smooth with antialiasing enabled which persuaded me my system could run the TRU fine.Bought the game, and it's unplayable, it goes from fluid-freeze for like 5 seconds and it's unplayable. Even the cinematic after the manor prologue was all messed up (sound stops, part of speech repeating themselves etc.), loading screen stutters, takes ages to load and is never smooth. However, the mediteranean part was okay for the cinematic, okay for the swimming around, and as soon as there was something to do, bam! it's unplayable again.

I had no other programs running at the time, I tried lowering settings to the minimum and it didn't change anything (except making things worse).

It's a real disappointment knowing how well the demo played on my computer. I don't even dare loading it up again because it's so frustrating.

You want to get Edios' attention to all these problems that they could care less about?
Take you game and the receipt back to the store where you got and get a refund. That will get their attention when everyone of us does this. They will start to listen. Otherwise, they don't give a crap. It's all about the money.

Haha, nice  Good luck with that, I wonder what it will fix for those with problems at the moment...

(you're losing market share, guys).
They're losing some people, but not really everyone. TR isn't really designed for PCs anyway, it's more of a console player in the market. It's more loss than they're prefer, but this isn't total failure for the PC.

They will start to listen.

Or, ditch the PC market completely for TR games. :) (no $$$ from PC = no need to make for PC). Look at what TR is on the PC now, they're not heavily invested into it (it would seem), and so withdrawing from a loss would be a sensible idea.
I think the problem's over-exagerated, though.

I doubt it will be... but they'll either need to make games (in terms of PC) without an issue like this, or drop out of the PC market. I think it's only (some) nVidia people affected, but it's seems a big enough problem...

After being inspired by the fact my copy also skips and lags incessantly and looking here at the forums I decided to experiment. I have no idea if this will work for you or if someone has already posted this and everyone's tried it or not. First off, I have a nvidia 7600 gs with updated drivers so I went to my device manager and rolled back my driver to 6.14.11.7813 from 9/17/2008. After rebooting when I finished rolling it back I now can play this game. I'm not gonna lie and say it's a perfect fix but it's definitely been better so far. It still sticks in some places but all in all it's alot smoother. I don't know if we're allowed to post webpages here but here's the nvida archives for previous drivers if anyone wants to really experiment with it.
http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp-2k_archive.html

Once again I don't know if this has already been tried. Just letting anyone know what I did and that it helped in my circumstance quite a bit. Still wouldn't mind a patch from nvidia or Eidos to really smooth this out but this will get me by for now.

I doubt it will be... but they'll either need to make games (in terms of PC) without an issue like this, or drop out of the PC market. I think it's only (some) nVidia people affected, but it's seems a big enough problem...

One would also think that Eidos/CD would be eager to fix this problem to avoid the inevitable comparisons to AOD--unless, of course, reputation is less important than number of units sold.

Interesting thought, streder. Worth a try for those with problems...

@tym: I hope some sort of official fix/response comes up... I don't own a copy yet (it hasn't arrived in my country, yet), but I'd hope I'd be able to run the game. (There've been people who could run the demo who have had issues with the final game  )

Ok so a friend of mine has done some research on this, and either this post willbe removed or i willbe banned from the forums, the reason Nvidia cards do not work is because the game has been coded and designed to work with ATi cards,as Eidos are in bed with ATi and Athlon,so the gfx sorftware was designed to conflict with any Nvidia card,so they thought we would all go out and buy ATi GFX cards

Nvidia are trying to fix this issue, but thx to eidos and ATi it tough,so i am not gonna buy this game, simply because if a games sofware organisation is gonna do stuff like this then they dont deserve our support,so pass this onto everyone that owns an Nvidia card

Perhaps "your friend" would like to verify his research by posting the links here.
If you look at www.tombraider.com/, you can see that one of the partners is "nVidia"..
http://www.tombraider.com/upload/img/partner_nvidia_20080627122448.png
it's still strange that there're issues with the nVidia cards, even then. (I hear it's to do with the way nVidia cards handle shader technology...).

Thas funny you say that we're in bed with ATi.. we aint in anyones `bed` so to speak. nVidia helped out, as did ATi.. I do love how people can make up claims and without any proof post them and hope it stirs up controversy.

Drivers from ATI (8.11) has a fix in it specific for TRU, and we are working with nVidia to try and sort out their `6/7 series cards` precaching issue with the shaders. ATi hardware handles precaching differently so all their SM3 hardware supports it properly, with nVidia all from their 8 series upwards support it properly, the 6/7 series precaches BUT then insists on reloading again within the driver on first use (basically repeats the work). nVidia are looking to see if can fix in driver this issue, and we are looking to try and optimise how it caches on those cards.

The Shader 3 requirement has been around in games for along time now, with hardware being available for many years. Laptop users really need to remember that their chipsets are NOT desktop chipsets which run a lot hotter etc. They will not get the same performance from a laptop then from an `identical` chipset'd desktop

I see a couple of users say they have desktop 8 series cards and the 8600 gives blue screen and the 8800 gtx goes black. Well i have the same 8800 gtx card and run the game without any issue, retail version. Like anything to do with PC's it could be so many possible combination of issues of software/hardware. What sound card do you have?

What an absurd conspiracy theory, no doubt fomented by someone with a vindictive nature and an axe to grind. I have a nvidia card and the game plays superbly well. If you're going to come up conspiracy theories try something believable, like Lara fell out with the Nvidia 7 series tooth fairy and asked Zip to implant a bug in everyone's PCs who entered her Manor with a 7 series Nvidia card.

Streder

Thanks, Streder! (I keep copies of my drivers under lock-and-key, mate.) ;)
That's the same good roll-back advice that has been shared for like decades by Nvidia owners.

That's great. I'm glad to finally hear that the issue has been acknowledged and that it is being addressed by those who can hopefully fix it.

I know you guys don't write the nVidia drivers and it's a bit like asking how long is a piece of string, but would you have any idea how long this process might take? There's a great many of us with nVidia 6 and 7 series cards out here in "the cold" so to speak.

Appreciate your efforts anyway.

I have NVIDIA gEFORCE 7050 pv / nvidia Nforce 630A

Im:mad2: having problems with it - it installs pretty well, but when i go to run it - i get a msg that says *Wrong DRM version data abb9a99b, code 13
rebuild of PC-W\shaderlib.drm needed* - so that ties in pretty good with what i read elsewhere on ths site - that the nvidias cards are problematic - something to do with the shading.

My graphics is above - can anyone tell me please if would that normally be good enough to play this great game ?
Also is this in the 7 series ? I am new to this stuff - so please bear with me.

Many thanks in advance peeps.

I agree. It just seems more an issue of incomplete testing or some other sloppiness and rushing on the part of CD/Eidos, which has thankfully been acknowledged. Hopefully they will optimize the game as well to run a bit better. I also hope the shader 2 hack works out too, so I can actually play the game!

I can now retract my previous posts, and admit there was no truth in them, but one of my points stand,it took an outrageous and untrue statement like mine to get a reaction from Eidos, you say its not your job,so who is responsible for looking at the techinical forums?

I have no axe to grind with Eidos,im from a small but growing part of the gaming community there are fed up with game developers releasing games that cleary have not been tested properly, did Eidos release a Beta testing version to any gamers in the community? Many developers are now doing this so they can find these problems before release,we all know games on the PC are not perfect, but this release has major issues, some of these people who now have this game and cannot play it have have spent money on a game that does not work, and everyone knows that with PC software once you break the seal, many shops will not let you get a refund.
Eidos are not the worst developers for this kind of thing,as previous releases on the PC have been much better, and pressure forces early release many times, the fact christmas is here, shareholders want sales sales sales,so we get software releases that are well below standard,is it any wonder people illegally download copies of games,i do not support this practice as in the long run iy harms the gaming community,so i ask these questions to Eidos

Did you release a beta version to a small group of gamers in the community to test?
and a demo is not the same as a Beta test....lol

Why did you not notice this large flaw with some Nvidia cards

So i ask these questions and i hope we all get a quicker reply than before

And thanks for finally telling the community you are aawre of this issue and are trying to fix it,thats all we all wanted to hear, just a shame it took so long.... :(

By modding - If you mean applying a virtual drive - yeah. I ve messed around a little puttingone of them on - but im thinking of taking it off - im sure its caused other problems as well.

But only for GTA San Andreas - i wouldnt have thought that would have affected the TR game ? Could i run a diagnostics check somewhere ? To find out what is wrong ? Im not on the internet at home - (so i dont need a lot of the stuff that was put on) only at a publiclibary i have access.

Plus, enough folks have reported the "Direct3D" error that it suggests assuming all PC users had shader 3 was erroneous, though I'm sure ATI and nVidia would love to have everyone upgrade hardware.

As for the issues with the game, it seems that Eidos/CD has taken the Microsoft approach: release a buggy beta version for sale and "fix" it with (presumed) patches.

Whatever problems you guys are encountering, I'd personally say it's your individual systems. There's no way Crystal can cater for absolutely every single PC set up out there.

How could they have erroneously assumed people had Shader Model 3 capable cards when they state that requirement ON THE BOX itself?

Shader Model 3 itself is almost 4 years old now, and it was first supported 2 games back in TR:L (albeit with mixed success), so how many games should they keep themselves get dragged down with having to support legacy hardware?

You can't run Unreal Engine 3 games on old cards either, but I've yet to hear an outcry over that - what's the difference here?

Yes it can. And I can prove it. By disabling one of my GTX280s.

We're not here to talk about Crysis. But I would like to know why my system, which can play Crysis at 1920 x 1200 with every setting in the game maxed out (that's 16xAA AND Vsync enabled) can't play Underworld without turning things down to medium. Eidos, you are not going to convince me your game is more demanding than Crysis. Maybe you should phone up Crytek for some programming tips. Lord knows, even THEY did a better job than your lot.

Edit (next day):

Well, I guess I'm gonna have to take it back. It's just the scene on the boat that runs like cr*p. Just out if interest, I tried upping the settings again further through the game and it runs fine with all settings maxed out. I get 100fps with the Vsync off. Wonder why that scene is so bad.

This (http://forums.eidosgames.com/showpost.php?p=901517&postcount=29) (from a member of the dev team) may or may not be interesting, as a comment on this situation. (Driver updates from nVidia on the way, and possibly a patch from Eidos)
Although with these problems it's not always one thing... for some people it's sound card, others it is the shader stuff with the graphics, and for others it's software they have running in the background. Everyone's PC is different.

Try this (http://forums.eidosgames.com/showthread.php?t=83465), perhaps. It might work, might not.
Another thing to try is an older driver for your card rather than a newer one, until the release a new driver.

What I mean is that enough people trying to run this game don't meet the shader 3.0 requirement that Eidos/CD made a bad decision trying to force it on everyone.

Apart from that, the game has enough other problems that it doesn't seem to be worth buying until at least a major patch or bugfix version is released.

I sometimes wonder what people call bad ??

The acceptable minimum frame rate for a game is '25 fps'.

If it doesn't go below this your laughing.

Nobody needs a 100fps, it's just a waste.

If i was getting this frame rate i would get a bigger monitor (30", 2560*1600res).

I beg to differ. The only acceptable framerate is a constant framerate - VSync absolutely needs to be on to eliminate tearing, and anything slower than 60 FPS will in that case automatically make it drop down to 30 FPS (and of course it'll constantly shift between 30 and 60 depending on what's on screen...)

And don't tell me you don't notice a drop from 60 down to 30 immediately and it's not annoying and immersion-killing as hell... which of course goes for tearing as well.

Stuff like this sometimes happen when a new PC game comes. (remembers Alone in the Dark). Usually it's because the graphic card drivers needs to be updated. Only thing you can do is to wait for Nvidia to develop a new set of drivers. I remember with Alone in the Dark it took ATI around a month to come out with their new drivers which fixed the crashing issues in Alone in the Dark.

It is strange in this day and age of "well tested" software, to not have the specific driver updates for, at least, the two major manufacturers like Nvidia and ATI? (True, they have a lot of 3d-cards that need to be tested.) But, don't they have special testing-houses just for this type of work?

And with their own in-house testing, how could CD or Eidos have missed the major 7series card?
(I wish that my UnReal Map Editor could dig-into some of the mysteries of TRU maps and perhaps some faulty pieces?)

Sorry, but if you're too cheap to get with the times I don't have any pity for you - that was a business decision Eidos had to make, and they have every right to stop supporting old hardware. If you can't read it's not their fault...

What's next? People complaining because a new game doesn't run on their 486DX33?

Well, I have a laptop with discrete graphics. The motherboard was already replaced to upgrade graphics in anticipation of this game, but the requirements were beyond what my maxed out system can evidently support (and it seems I'm not alone here if you do a bit of hunting for the "Direct3D error").

Perhaps you have more disposable income than I do and wish your conspicuous consumption to be on computer hardware but I'm not really in the mood of plunking down close to $2000 to play a $50 game that will be in the $9.99 bargain bin in a couple of months.

As for my $2000 estimate, that is for a rugged high-end performance laptop, as given my work and frequent travel, a desktop is not an option.

I want to buy an NVIDIA card (used) to play Tomb Raider Underworld. Kindly tell me that which card (model) in 7 Series will play the game efficiently (I can not afford 8 or 9 Series).
Thanks

Currently a large number of people are having trouble primarily with their nVidia 6/7 series cards when playing Underworld, so if you're looking for efficiency, your guess is as good as mine.

I have a 7900 GTO, and playing Underworld is very rough.

Hopefully they'll be coming out with a 6/7 series patch soon.

I seriously don't understand why so much trouble running it with the 7 series.. I mean Legend and Anniversary ran perfectly for me.. but this one... I get everything but it stays on the "Previously on Tomb Raider" were it says to go to Extras to see the compilation video.. and it stays there forever! After a while it did go to the manor but the game was running SUPER SLOW!:mad2: WHEN ARE THEY GONNA FIX THIS... They should come up with a patch or something!

Don't waste your money on anything in the Nvidia 7 series at this stage. It seems that virtually everyone with a 7 series card can't run the game without framerate stuttering even on the lowest settings even running it on a high-end PC.

If that's your price range though I'd suggest looking at an ATI equivalent as the problem (as admitted by Eidos) is specific to Nvidia cards.

Well, you can get a 512MB 8600GT for £50 and a 9600GT for £70. I'm not sure which 7 series cards you were considering but, if you were looking at 7600s, I would look at the 8s and 9s again.

Well, you obviously didn't read my post properly. I waw actually saying that I had problems at first but it runs OK now. And, of course, I didn't build a system so I could run Tomb Raider at 100fps. I play other games too, you know, and they don't run at 100fps. Crysis, for example. Assassin's Creed? Far Cry 2?

I had to laugh a little. I could say that I'm Batman too, but it doesn't make it so.
Demo one thing that works, deliver something else that doesn't sounds a lot like the old Bait-and-switch. Not exactly the kind of game everyone was looking to play.
Just from a PR standpoint you'd think that they (Eidos) would release regular updates.

I recommend that everyone who doesn't have the game yet, hold off on your purchases.
I know it's a bummer for those who wanted to give/get this for Christmas, but better to wait than be frustrated when it won't work.
For those who already purchased it, I hope you kept your receipts and original packages.
For me it playing a game isn't my life, so a game purchase it just that, a purchase.
If that purchase does not meet advertised specs, then I return it. I seriously recommend the rest of you consider that if Eidos fails to meet their end of EULA.

Cool. That fixed the loading times and the text appears smoothly now. :)

It would be good if there was some sort of patch for the in-game stuttering with nVidia 7x cards though.

System:

P4 3.4Ghz
2 x 7900 GT's (sli)
Latest nVidia drivers (178.24)
2Gb of ram
XP

Meets the specs. Shame there was no PS3 demo to see how good (or bad) that version looks/works. Because of that, I went for the PC version as I did for Anniversary which played fine on the same system.

Come on Eidos, sort it out.

Cool. That fixed the loading times and the text appears smoothly now. :)
While it makes the text appear smoothly on ATI cards and makes the game load a bit (though not hugely) faster it'll cause a hitch everytime a shader is used for the first time, which isn't too swell either.

If anything, nVidia needs to fix this in their drivers - an Eidos rep said in another post here that while the nVidia drivers did compile the shaders while loading (thus the non-smooth text appearance) they did so again during the game...

Well if your laptop manufacturer isn't updating their drivers regularly I can hardly see this as Eidos or nVidia's fault. Laptop manufacturers have to make their drivers work with their hardware so it takes them longer but they are quite quick to drop driver updates for old models of laptop. You could either get onto the laptop makers about a lack of driver updates, use the 3rd party drivers mentioned by Steve above or worst case, get a new(er?) laptop which still gets some kind of driver support from the manufacturer.

C'mon Eidos, you cannot be serious!

For me it's not an option to fix bugs for desktop users only and to leave all laptop users standing in the rain! After all there's no single line on the DVD-ROM package or in the ReadMe file saying that my GeForce Go 7200 is not supported anymore by the game, not even the fact that laptops won't be supported at all! That must be just a bad joke, or did I really spend 40 Euros for nothing? Didn't you make any beta-testing before the release?

As a loyal custumer and collector of all Tomb Raider Games up to now I'm very disappointed! I never had any performance problems playing TR Games on my laptop, including Legend or Anniversary. Why should UNDERWORLD change things in such a way that only frustration remains? You should be aware of your reputation, since that Eidos/nVidia problem is already known by gamers all over the world who spent much money!

How about a patch

It has already been stated that this is an issue with the driver from nVidia and the solution will come in the form of a driver update from nVidia.

If your laptop manufacturer does not provide sufficient driver updates you should take this up with them. It is not nVidia or EIDOS stopping you from getting the correct driver update. You will find that nVidia usually update their drivers about once a month (roughly) and laptop manufacturer's then have to take these drivers and modify them to be compatible with your make/model of laptop. If you contact the manufacturer to let them know you need updated drivers (once this is resolved) they may actually be able to provide you with them. You may also want to check the small print of your laptop to see how long the manufacturer offer to provide updates for your make/model of laptop.

Failing that, there are 'alternative' drivers available for laptops which, as far as I can tell, work just as good as the original drivers do although there obviously can be some repercussions of using them hence why I wont mention any by name or ever tell someone to go use them specifically, that's something you have to decide yourself.

I realise you feel like your left out the loop on getting a solution, this isn't EIDOS' intention but this is an issue which has to be addressed at the driver level which in turn then has to be re-worked by laptop manufacturers so you can make use of it.

The patch is correctly anounced as a "progress" - not as a solution. :hmm: In fact I couldn´t even realize a progress on my system as I had manually changed the registry to DontDeferShaderCreation = 0 before. I guess the patch doesn´t do much more than this…? Loading times are much shorter but there is still a significant stuttering when entering an area for the first time that makes the game almost unplayable. I still believe that there is an urgent need for a nvidia-driver-update.
If someone managed to solve the problems by the patch, tell us please.
If not, give Your feedback to indicate that the progress isn´t a sufficient solution yet.

my laptop and system same as yours, the patch is not working...

I have a M1730, and i played thru entire game with all settings on maximum :(

what gpu comes in the 1710? am guessing tis a slower chipset :(

have u got the very latest dell drivers for it? this is where laptops ALWAYS struggle with gaming and until nvidia/ati start synchronising all drivers for all chipsets it will always lag behind. Not much we can do about that am afraid

what gpu comes in the 1710? am guessing tis a slower chipset :(

It comes with a NVIDIA GeForce Go 7950 GTX

I was on Nvidia- and Dell Side to check on drivers, and downloaded newest GPU- Drivers and chipset drivers from dell, so it's all the newest u can get sofar.

To bad, so we have to wait until Nvidia is reacting on that :(

But thanks anyway for the try :thumb:

What graphics cards are you running? The patch doesn't change any in game settings so it wont have set your options to `low` as a `fix`..

We are still waiting on nVidia to release drivers that sort out the shader issue too, we've helped as much as we can within current limits of the drivers.

Cool and my bad re: settings.

I've got 2 x 7900 GT's (sli)

i have read following on nvidia.com...

...."Starting today, customers with GeForce® 8 and 9-series GPUs or Quadro NVS-equipped notebooks can download a BETA version of the drivers from www.nvidia.com. Customers will be able to download a WHQL-certified version supporting all GeForce 7, 8, and 9 series and Quadro NVS series notebook GPUs early next year."...

Now on http://www.eidos.co.uk/support/faqinfo.html?fqid=427&gmid=215 the problem is declared as fixed with the 181.20 driver - in contrary to my experiences and any other statements I could find about this driver!!! The lagging remains the same or isn´t reduced significantly :mad2:
What are Your experiences? Is the problem really fixed or only declared as fixed to give up further efforts?

I find it more playable than before and have got further into the game. Where it lags I feel it's either loading textures or I'm at the limit of the processor or the gfx cards. It's kinda annoying that I can't fight enemies properly but the environments are so much more detailed than Anniversary I guess that's where the rendering power is being consumed. Maybe I should get Crysis to see how that plays on my system.

Maybe we need to upload videos of what we are seeing just to compare?

ddstomb

I still believe that the problem with lagging is not the result of limited processor and gfx card power. Some reasons:
- I can play every actual game like Crysis, Far Cry 2, Prince of Persia, Mirrors Edge, Pure etc. on my laptop without stuttering or lagging when I reduce resolution and graphic quality settings. In TRU even with the lowest settings the lagging remains the same.
- After the lagging when an area is loaded the fps are fine even with middle or high quality settings.
- Lagging appears not or seldom when moving within large rooms with many textures and details (so demanding much graphic power) but very often when passing corridors with only few details (so demanding less graphic power).
So I think the main problem is the multiple (pre)loading of shaders when entering a new area as mentioned in a posting above.
In my case the symptoms remained the same after installing the new driver so in my case the main problem isn´t solved yet.

Maybe we need to upload videos of what we are seeing just to compare?
I believe In my case capturing the gameplay would crash the game. But perhaps I can describe a typical situation: in the Mediterranean Sea level everything works fine when I swim around in free water. But as soon as I pass the entry of the cave with the door (opened in treasure hunter mode) lagging begins. The lagging now appears 4-5 times when I pass the tunnels with the jellyfish. When I have reached the cave lagging disapears until I´ve arrived at the door with the serpent puzzle. And so on the same pattern: entering a new cave or sector of a corridor: lagging. Passing through the cave or sector: no lagging. Another example: in the Thailand level everything works fine when climbing the cliff and passing the jungle until I enter the area with the ruins at the river with the first tiger fight: the first lagging. Passing this area is no problem until I pass the corridor with the bats. Here lagging appears several times until the Bhogavati temple is entered and loaded. Moving within the courtyard is possible with almost no lagging.
Also lagging appears systematically in the cut scenes after loading a level or after entering a new area (and beginning a fight). Lagging always appears in the cut scenes when the camera perspective is changed and a new sector of the room is shown that was not visible before.

Anyone with the same experiences (also after updating the driver)?

Please post dxdiag info if you still have problems after installing both the v1.1 patch and the latest drivers. Also, when it comes to installing drivers, make sure you are uninstalling the old drivers first, reboot your PC when prompted, install new drivers and reboot once more when prompted.

Ddstomb, you will need to contact your Laptop manufacturer for updated drivers. The "GO" drivers on nvidia's website is only for certain higher end 7xxx series chipsets. The standard drivers for 7xxx series desktop cards wont work on laptops, don't use them.

Thank You for Your answer! Glad to see that You care about my problems!
I wish my laptop manufacturer (Toshiba) would care about it, too. But if it depends on Toshiba to provide the driver I can give up any hopes to ever enjoy TRU on my laptop. Toshiba's "actual" driver dates from 9/13/07! So I always used one of the 'alternative' drivers You mentioned in a post before. Until now with success. I also managed to run the
181.20 driver under Vista without blue screen. But as it is obviously not mend to support my Geforce Go 7600 it doesn´t address and solve the TRU specific problem in my case. :(
So I´ve got only one last request to Eidos support :worship: As I described in my post above the lagging problem destroys almost every cut scene within the game. Besides from the stuttering graphics the sound is interrupted or looped so it often is hard or impossible to follow the story. Would it be possible to post a rendered or screen captured version of the cut scenes in the forum/internet (may be exclusive for registered users)? Besides from the ones still having problems with their gfx cards it would also meet the complaints of the ones that missed the possibility to review the scenes in the extras menu…
..or two requests … When Lara enters a new area and lagging begins it noticed that it helps a lot to stop Lara and circle the camera two to three times around her until the lagging disappears. After that there are almost no more problems with lagging within that area. But this method is not practicable during a time trial or when Lara is riding her bike or being attacked by enemies. So a hotkey for “time freeze” would be extremely useful. It should pause the game but without displaying the pause menu and still allowing the camera to circle around Lara (even better: providing free flight trough the area). That would allow the gfx card to load the area and the player to continue the area without having problems to control Lara’s movements during lagging.
I'm not an expert but I don't think that it would be very complicated to implement a function into the game that stops the movements of Lara and the NPCs. Perhaps this function even exists already in the debugging mode? Providing such a work around Eidos could prove that they try to help even the customers that still don't get support by nvidia or their laptop manufacturer ;)
I've been waiting longingly several months for the release of TRU, then several weeks for a suitable patch or driver to play it. I don't want to wait annother year until I can afford a new PC being finally able to play the game :(

Hello all,

I have installed both the patch and the new driver update and the game is still laggy.
I have tried to uninstall the previous drivers and reinstall the new ones but the game was even worse:mad2:

Please help me i want to play this game properly!!!

Please help!

The laptop drivers on nVidia's website are version 179.28 (ie, the wrong version that doesn't include the fix) and even when I tried to install them on my computer it said no appropriate card found.

I tried to install the regular release of 180.20 but my PC BSOD'ed. I've tried to contact my laptop manufacturer but they aren't getting in touch and I don't expect they will.

What can I do??

:(

Well, unfortunately RobertD, even the so called fixed driver doesn't fix the problem.

It is said to be a bit better, but still very unpleasant to play....

What can you do ? Well, either wait for another driver and/or a patch from Eidos, either forget that game and all its technical problems to play something else.

That's what I did : I sold my copy of the game (40€). I've lost 15€ in the operation and I promise to myself I won't buy any other game from Eidos until they improve their support...

Actually, I'm sad to see this situation : Legends and Anniversary were so great I did believe in the future of Tomb Raider... I don't believe in it anymore. Too disapointed.

I tried the new beta driver and it runs fine without crashing but TRU is still the same with the lagging. Very high FPS and sometimes she runs a little too fast. However, still pausing every few seconds. The first level after the intro runs nearly fine though very little stuttering unless I turn the utility light on.

Just a quick thanks to everyone who made these issues known, and to those who found ways around it. Im a big fan but was dissapointed with this particular issue which made the demo unplayable on PC. Because directly of this, I delayed the purchase of TR:U for a rental copy on XBOX360, even though I wanted to own it on PC. With these set of fixes, both from Eidos And the community, TRU is playable again. I diagree with the argument that I should upgrade to a series 8 or 9 card, becuase I can play other more intensive games at lower resolutions without ANY hiccups. In Conclusion, I am heartened of the progress that has been made, but hopeful of a true solution that truly eliminates the issues (esp the stuttering) with these cards. Note: I have recently purchased a used Limited Edition copy of TR:U and will preorder the next installment of TR to make up for Underworld. :)

fixes:
Make sure u turn off multi cpu and multithreading if you have a single core cpu, I use nhancer utility.
