TRU stutters all the time and is unplayable. My system meets the minimum requirements and almost meets the recommended requirements. I have set everything to minimum at it still stalls all the time, even though its do at least 50 frames. I have updated all my drivers. What the hell! :mad2: :mad2: :mad2:

I seem to have the same problem.
The game was absolutely unplayable from the start in the manor. It gets smooth every now and again (for example on the surface of the water after the prologue but that's all).

I tried lowering settings to minimum, cut sound. Even lowered resolution but it didn't seem to make any difference whatsoever.
I meet the recommended settings for the game except for the gfx card (I've got a GeForce 7900GS).

On a side note, I've played the demo, and it was running perfectly smooth, with highest settings and antialiasing x2. This convinced me TRU would play fine on my system, and I found out today it was not the case :(

halicarnassus, I have almost the exact same set up that you have but I have an AMD 4800+ and now I have two video cards. When I turn it down to the worst setting it actually runs slower for me. I couldn't even play through the first level and my husband put in a second video card thinking that would make it run perfectly and it didn't do anything for it. He runs all of the latest and greatest games but this is just ridiculous. I'm very worried this is going to be like AOD, I just think they rushed it.

I've found the game on my system runs pretty much the same as the demo.

Same kind of frame rates, odd jerk here and their but no games perfect.

I'm running it 1680*1050 max with 4AA, same settings as the demo.

Not sure why your seeing a difference because the demo was lifted straight from the finished game as far as i can see.

Don't know why but after playing for a while if i alt-tab out of the game and then go back in i get a 10fps increase which is annoying.

I already posted about this and didn't get a good reply, I also had the demo run fine on max settings and now have this problem. It is unplayable and reducing the settings has no effect. I play 5 other new games at the moment all on max settings with higher requirements than tru and they run fine. Hopefully they can get a patch sorted soon to deal with the problem. Otherwise it's getting returned!

I'm experiencing an identical problem and came to register on the forum to see if there was a solution.

The game slows to a snails pace while loading and playing, but will occasionally return to a normal frame rate for a few seconds time, which seems to confirm my suspicion that there's an issue rather than my computer not meeting the requirements (which it does).

I had the same problem with the demo but assumed it would be fixed in the real game.

My problem is identical to the ones described by others here - even on the absolute minimum settings, with all effects turned off and resolution set to minimum it's the same if not worse.

Is there a solution for this problem at all?

I haven't heard of any fixes yet, I think we'll just have to wait until Eidos decides to help us. I am so bummed out, I was looking forward to this game and now it's just a waste. I thought I was helping out by getting the cheaper version of this because we have such a high end computer.

Does anyone have problems with the cut scenes? Those are pre-rendered and should never have issues running, right? The cut scenes are a scattered mess of video and sound that never sync and start over 5 times. Even the load menu is lagging, where the circle spins, it jerks and stops all of the time. Anyone else having that issue?

Hi, I've got the same kind of problems, the game starts with very long loading times,
then at first runs stuttering and slowly reaches an acceptable framerate, just untill the
next big thing happens and the game crashes :mad2:
I'm running games like crysis, far cry 2, halflife2 episode 2, etc without any problems and high settings on my dell XPS M1710, duo core 3 ghz/4gb ram/nvidia 7950gtx 512mb/7200rpm 160gb.
Let's hope that Eidos can find a solution, allthough I think they should have spent a litle bit more time on their code writing instead of waisting our time.....

Dragonranger

Jennibee is right. The load menu stuttering and the fact that the cutscenes have the sound repeating 5 times or so is definetly pointing towards it being a fault with the game not with peoples systems. It's frustrating because i've been looking forward to it for a long time. Even on 640x480 and everything off (with it looking like an early tomb raider) it runs the same perhaps even worse as some people have said. It seems more and more people are coming up with this problem and we're pretty much all sitting around with an expensive biscuit stuck in our DVD drives. Where are the official Eidos support people?

I just read on another post in this forum that Eidos know about the problem and are working on it.... Don't know any other details but it at least gives me some hope. They should really sort these things out before hand but hopefully we will at least not have wasted our money!

Cutscenes aren't 'rendered' per se. They are actually happening as they're shown and that's why it doesn't perform well for us on certain PC's. Or, at least, that's what I heard.

Has everyone with problems tried to update their drivers?

1.3 Known Issues
- Ensure you are running latest drivers from nVidia and ATI.
- Low end nVidia hardware users may notice a slight stutter when first entering a location. This is a known issue with the current release of drivers (178.13). This should be addressed in an upcoming driver release.

To download drivers, you need to contact your computer manufacturer (or motherboard manufacturer if your computer is custom built).

trlestew, I meant that the game was a coaster. The two video cards I have are excellent.

Anyway, the weirdest thing just happened to me. I started a whole new game and while the prologue was mildly still shaky, the rest of the game so far is playing like a dream. It lags a little bit when it Checkpoints but IIRC it did that on Legend and Anniversary too, even on the PS2. Totally strange, huh?

Yes the many, MANY disgruntled gamers with NVIDIA cards with varying PC specs ranging from "barely minimum" to "super-kick-yo-ass-PC" are ALL experiencing very similar problems which mainly manifest in a frame-rate stuttering effect during gameplay.

I don't think there is any doubt that there is a serious problem here that Eidos need to resolve.

yes , we all know its only Nvidia cards thats having problems , I also know that Nvidia should have a fix , my problem is that the retards in Eidos have never mentioned this, and no one from them have even commented on the threads here. Either they clearly mention that which Nvidia cards are not suitable, either they mention that there is no fix so that no one buys them (apart from an Idiot like me who actually paid for TRU), either they create a patch, either they tell Nvidia to come up with a solution , or either they don't release a game without testing it first.

maybe Eidos or Nvidia are finding a solution , but the fact remains that neither have responded and for 4 days after release , PC Users are stuck with a game which they cant play.
In fact i sent an email stating the problems with the game, attached the Dxdiag to them, and also sent them a link to this thread and a few other, but no reply yet.

Incorrect. Eidos (as publisher) stated that the game would be suitable for "NVIDIA GeForce 6 series 6800GT (or better)" graphics cards. The fact that it is clearly not suitable for some cards within those specifications makes their promotion of the game misleading and in breach of the law.

Anyone that can't run the game smoothly (at least on the lowest settings) that has a PC that meets the minimum requirements is legally entitled to a refund (and also to be reasonably cranky about the whole issue).

At the very least Eidos need to make a statement on this issue immediately.

Not every card better than the 6800GT is supported:

Graphic Cards not supported – Cards may function but performance may be reduced
ATI – Radeon X1300, Radeon X1500, HD 2300/2400, HD4550
nVidia – GeForce 6200, GeForce 6600, GeForce 7300, GeForce 7800 GS, GeForce 8300, GeForce 8400, GeForce 8500, GeForce 9400/9500

I'm not sure what the definition of "Minimum requirements" is compared to "Recommended requirements". "Running smoothly" would seem to require recommended things, though.

Good idea. Here's what I found (from the readme):

Cards which should be able to play without issue
ATI – Radeon X1800, Radeon X1900, Radeon X1950, Radeon HD2600/2900 series, Radeon HD3650/3850 Series, Radeon HD 4670/4850 series
nVidia – GeForce 6800 Ultra, GeForce 7600 GT, GeForce 7900 GTX, GeForce 7950, GeForce 8600 GTS, GeForce 8800, GeForce 9600 GT, GeForce 9800 GTX, GeForce GTX 2xx

So given that I'm running a PC that is about midway between the "minimum" and "recommended" specs with a GeForce 7900 GTX ("should be able to play without issue") and I'm experiencing stuttering on the lowest settings, I re-state that Eidos have misled consumers.

I don't understand why you think it's relevant whether people tried the demo or not. Individuals who researched the requirements and purchased the game on the assumption that they were correct have fulfilled their obligation as consumers. If Eidos or Crystal Dynamics put information on the system requirements or in the readme that is not true, the responsibility rests with the producers, not the consumers.

Brand loyalty is understandable, but this seems to be taking it to an extreme.

Because a demo is a far better indication of whether a demo will run or not on a PC than numbers ever could be. The possible number of hardware combinations is far too much to list on any sheet of paper, and so with a product that should give a damn good indication of how well it will run (because the demo's just a smaller version of the big product), it helps to see if it will run.

Ditching the PC market (from production point of view, for Tomb Raider) would seem a decent idea, don't you think?

:p Now this thread's really gonna suck. There're so many people all experiencing the same issue, but it's most likely that they're all for different things. (And apart from knowing that 90% of them are *satisfied* nVidia customers, there's no real info on system specs apart from "it runs Far Cry 2"...).

That sucks that it ran the demo but not the final product  I wonder what the issue is for this one (and what the issues are for the other games). (I've read something about the way nVidia cards deal with Shader tech vs. other cards... here's hoping for an nVidia patch)

I did indeed try the demo which ran perfectly. I think that's probably the issue that's made me really furious about this. I'm trying not to be unfair to Eidos, but when you try something out and then make the purchase and find that you didn't get what you paid for I think you've got a right to be annoyed.

Imagine if you went to a car dealership and had a test drive in a sports car, then when you made the purchase and drove it out of the dealership and one of the wheels fell off. So you turn around and walk back to the dealership (because you can't drive your 3-wheeled car) and the dealer says "well... sorry about that but it's really a problem with the road you drove over - that's what caused the wheel to fall off. We can't help, but we're hoping the authorities get a fix for the road."

Hear what I'm saying?

No, that would make no commercial sense whatsoever. It would however reduce the number of angry posts from PC users that you would have to respond to.

Perhaps not, but TR:U appears to be a sorry excuse for a PC game; compare it to other PC games and it will fall short, because of its console-focus. If the tech issues are that bad that they don't make profit from PC, they'd better hope they make the next game damn good.

And who said I'd like them to ditch the PC... I wouldn't mind if all those without something to add would stop moaning though. If there's nothing to be done, then whining's just a pain... (not as evident in this thread as in others, though...).
This thread's cluttered enough, though I suppose it's far past the point of individual help :p

And now I'm really curious about this issue... I'll admit I haven't got a copy of TR:U yet. (Shipment times for my county, etc. doesn't arrive till December 5th). What's slightly concerning is the demo did run fine for me, and I've got an nVidia card... (I wonder what my chances are...)
Even more curious is that it's not every nVidia card that's doing it... just for the people in here (and in similar threads).
The issue's too consistant to be a disc scratch (I'd think), and not widespread enough to be purely the issue of the game. The issue affects regardless of how good the computer is (even if it can run Far Cry 2 on full settings...), and so it's not (purely) the fault of the computer. ATM I'm blaming nVidia, until they release drivers to fix this problem.

EDIT:
I can only assume everyone here's running with the latest drivers. (& getting these problems). Perhaps try with older drivers, see if that works. (Was suggested here (http://forums.eidosgames.com/showpost.php?p=901480&postcount=25))

It would be really interested in how many people do have problems with the game. (I thought about starting a poll, but I didn't, because it wouldn't be representative: People without problems are less likely to read a tech support forum and there are more nVidia cards out there than Ati, and it might only look like that for every Ati problem there are 10 or 20 nVidia problems.)

It seems to me there are a lot of people with problems, though. So it is likely that something did go wrong with the programming, which to me means that there will be a patch sooner or later. (You can say all you like about Eidos but in my experience they fix things after they figured out what the problem really is. It's sad and sometimes annoying that problems occur in the first place, especially since I personally think the game is rather good, but these things happen - there simply is no bug free software.)

Well, I have an ATI Radeon 4850 and I had problems with the game lagging like crazy every few steps (i.e. if you just turned in place it'd get smooth after a 360° turn, but run a few steps and the lag was back) - until I thought about checking for the other major trouble maker: my Creative X-Fi Platinum.

And of course as soon as I switched it from "Game Mode" (to use EAX et al) to "Audio Production Mode" (which turns off all the game-y bells and whistles) the game was smooth as silk. Granted, the framerate took a nosedive after some time (after 30 or something minutes it all of a sudden went from 60 FPS to 5 FPS or so), but bringing up the menu and leaving it again for whatever reason fixed that immediately...

Hi People ! :)

I found a partial solution for our serie 6 & 7 CG in another forum, and it work fine for me to fix the loading time (loading a level, a savegame, etc.), and the game itself feel a little better. Anyway, the loading now is smooth and quick as it must be ! pretty cool !

You need to edit your registry and search for:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Crystal Dynamics/Tomb Raider: Underworld/Graphics

change to '0' the entry DontDeferShaderCreation

And that's all ! :)
