View Full Version : Unable to run the TRU on an iMac using bootcamp

Crofty Raider

I have a fancy new iMac, with a 3.0Ghz Core Duo and the Nvidia 8800GS graphics chip and 4GB of memory. The bootcamp system has more than enough diskspace (100GB) and is running Windows XP, with service pack 3 installed. Plenty of hardware to run the TRU demo, except that the demo doesn't run.

After a complete install, with none of the issues referred to in these threads nor any of the issues seen in the tombraiderforums.com equivalent thread, I am unable to play the game at all.

Upon starting the game, it immediately dies with one of those dialog boxes from windows telling you that the application has crashed, would you like to send a bug report to Microsoft. No window comes up, nothing :(

The menu for the TRU demo does have an "analysis" option which works and runs to completion. As best I can tell, the hardware looks mighty good from TRU's perspective, but the game is a no go :(

Anyone have some help or workarounds I can do to make it work?

Thanks :)

Here is some more information from windows on the crash. NOTE: Windows made me type it in, I couldn't copy and paste from the crash information :( So I just typed in the most important information I could find...

MAC hardware isn't supported for the game, buy a PC with PC hardware and proper driver support for it under Windows then you might get somewhere. Also, Bootcamp is software emulation, the game isn't designed for use like this either.

Otherwise, wait for someone like Aspyr to pick up the license for it and make a MAC version.

Bootcamp is not software emulation, just to be clear. Windows XP is running entirely native, with no virtualization software running at all (maybe you have bootcamp confused with products like Vmware Fusion or Parallel's Desktop, which are Mac software products that support emulation).

Note that Tomb Raider Legend plays perfectly fine, and at amazing framerates even in "next-gen" mode.

Also, in this post http://forums.eidosgames.com/showthread.php?t=82816, the poster has the exact same crash I'm seeing in ntdll.dll, though his hardware is a "PC with PC hardware".

Tomb Raider Underworld demo seems to be a botch job, sadly :(

I was hoping to enjoy it while waiting for the Mac port, if any. Tomb Raider Anniversary for the Mac plays great on this same hardware.

This thread is half a year old, but I thought I'd answer nevertheless, because it's the only thread turning up in Google when searching for "tru.exe 0x7ff80153" but there's no solution.

Short answer to this problem is: This 0x7ff80153 error is caused when Process Explorer is running. You have to reboot your machine w/o Process Explorer running (disable it in Autorun if necessary). Once Process Explorer was run you are unable to run the demo. This probably is true for other process utilites (e.g. Process Monitor) as well.

Long answer: I've downloaded the TRU demo and had the exact same problem: It won't launch, tru.exe crashes with this 0x7ff80153 error no matter what. I didn't know why or what to do and no one seemed to have a solution.
I also downloaded TR Anniversary demo and when I tried to launch it, it complained that "A required security module can not be activated" and gave me this link http://www.securom.com/message.asp?m=module&c=5024+&l=en, where it says that a Process Explorer is running and that you should close it and reboot.
Reboot I thought? Haha. Ok, I'll close it and try again. Same error. I resigned and rebooted. I have Process Explorer in my Autorun, so it was started automatically. I closed it before I started TR Anniversary the first time. Same error. *grrr* Ok... I disabled it in Autorun and rebooted. Heureka!

This made me suspicious. TRA works, could it be that now I could run TRU as well? Indeed!!! So it's all about this SecuROM copy protection ***** (which apparently is messed up in TRU and just crashes the application when it doesn't like something). BTW: Apart from that very, very, very inconvenient error TRU was running very stable (though very slowly as well; haven't got the fastest machine).
There has to be a flag or so that's initially 0 and set to 1 once some kind of process utility is launched and stays 1 until you reboot. And if it's set to 1 this SecuROM crap won't start. All in all very sad because I love Process Explorer and have it running all the time. Comes in handy so often...

So I got TRU running and remembered this thread where someone had the same problem and no solution. I wondered if there was a process list attached to this thread: yes. And if procexp.exe is listed as running: yes again. That made it pretty clear to me, that 0x7ff80153 means Process Explorer is running.

I found out that the problem was that Process Explorer loads a Kernel driver an startup that can't (couldn't) be unloaded without restarting, and SecuROM doesn't like that driver because you could use it to get a catch on the evil things that it does...

In newer Process Explorer versions (I think from version 11 on) this has been changed. You don't have to reboot any more, just close Process Explorer and the game will run.
