View Full Version : The Internet in Deus Ex 3

What should they do if (and I think there may be some) they put computer connected to a fictive internet? Should they make fake websites like they did in GTA IV? I was thinking about something like this : using the game with our own internet connection. For example from an ingame computer, you could access the web using our own modem to reach websites made by the game developpers. We could do several things for example:
-Watch websites involving corporations and other things from the game
-We could open a fake bank account on a fake Bank Website where we could store the cash earned in the game and, using cash distributors like in DX1, retrieve some money when you need some.
-We could try to "hack" and find black market website where our cash could be used to buy and download new stuffs. When I say download I mean from the website to the game itself, with immediate availability to be used. That could help for example to build a strong community of modders would would for example make several tools and new stuff to download for a special price.
-We could also use a fake Instant Messenger system to "contact" the peoples we have met in the game. A kind of DX Live Messenger.
-There could also have T.V sports, advertissements, videos clips. It could be also usefull to put some locked bonuses which would have to be unlocked by doing special stuff.
-And others stuffs like looking at news, stock echanges and other fictives news...

I'm thinking about several things, no time to list them. But what do you think? It'll maybe never be put in DX3 but I thought it could be interresing...

No need to go too in-depth with it probably. Most of the computers we'll be accessing will probably be hooked up to more secure and less user friendly corporate intranets anyways.

Its a very good idea, its the kind of innovation IW should have looked into as a sequel to DX.

I dont own a console but there is such a thing as X-Box live right? So consoles would actually be able to that sort of thing or not?

Would be cool but you have to note, how often would this kind of thing be used? This is an RPG but it's still fairly linear. It's not a sandbox game like The Elder Scrolls or Grand Theft Auto so you really couldn't keep going back for more input on the games internet.

I'd be happy if they had it just like they did in the original Deus Ex, your suggestions own but it's too in-depth for a non-sandbox game IMO.

A great idea, but then all the console people would start whining and so it wouldn't be implemented.

The only concern I have with computers in games is a probem that Deus Ex and Splinter Cell seemed to have been suffering from. The aspect of going to a computer and having an option saying "SECRET FILES THAT YOU WANT. CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD WITHOUT CONSEQUENCE."

Didn't you read that Eidos Montréal put David Lynch in charge of the character development?

He can pull it off, no problem.
Plus, there will be midgets.

And a giant.

And the owls are not what they seem.

And anyone who can follow me gets to be in my cool-book.

Stop right there. NO ONE FROM DEUS EX WATCHES 4CHAN.

I hope, that by 2027, 4chan has exploded with the stupidity that those dumbasses think up. Having "anonymity" (which they really don't have, nobody does) doesn't mean you should act like a ****.

I say they should try go for some sort of in-game internet, but it shouldn't need you to connect to the real internet. The GTA IV one is a pretty good model, IMHO.

Yes, but the bots on Deus Ex also spam. So what do you expect? So let me rephrase myself.

NO PERSON FROM DEUS EX WATCHES 4CHAN.

4chan is the ass-end of modern society.

And, back on-topic. While I didn't mind GTA4's internet, I also found it more fitting because it's a sandbox video game. Deus Ex is not a sandbox game at all. And I do not see Eidos straying from that path to make it a sandbox game (seriously, there would be only so much you could do without ripping off GTA lol).

It works in GTA because you do not need to even play the storyline. Same with The Elder Scrolls games. But with ALL the Deus Ex games, even though it's been non-linear in terms of what augmentations you use, what dialogue options you use, what skills you use (for DX1), whether you kill someone or not etc, it's NOT non-linear in the terms that you can do anything you want when you want to.

You still have to follow some sort of storyline to progress further in the game, and you have to have done that in both Deus Ex and Deus Ex: Invisible War, I just don't see them changing it. Simply put, I don't think you would find enough time to do random crap on an internet so complex, in-between killing peeps and saving the world where would you?

To me, it'd be much too distracting and people would end up spending most of the time in-game on the internet instead of playing the storyline.

You know too much. You must be... disposed of in a timely and bloody fashion.

This might not happen but it would be cool to integrate the game internet to the game's website somehow. Like with high scores and hacking.

I drop in occasionally. I spend most of my days in a department of Physics, with some of the most brilliant people of this city. Most of my friends are economists, physicists, chemists, and philosophers. Every once in a while I need to be reminded of sheer idiocy that exists out there.

It's a sad fact that most console gamers would find it rather difficult to type things (username/passwords, let alone web pages) in a game like Deus Ex 3. It's not easy for them, unless they have a keyboard (~1% of them owns one?).

This is the reason why many games were "simplified" for use in consoles (Deus EX IW, Oblivion, etc). However, I myself STRONGLY desire to have the freedom to type my username/password, or even webpages and commands, in DX3. I hope that console gamers would appreciate this, since it made games like Deus Ex 1 and Vampire Bloodlines (remember typing in the DOS screen??) really unique.

So, +1 vote to the whole idea. If a fictive internet cannot be achieved, at least let us have a more interactive gameplay :) :) :)

Wow, I wasn't aware such a thing existed. This gives the dev team room to create many interesting things.

(Not to mention that it would sell like crazy if the game gets really high scores from critics <-- 100% certain imo :D)

sadly there's no similar option for the ps3

But then again it serves them right for buying a sony product :)

Yeah, cause microsoft is so much better :o

Microsoft didn't shaft gamers for the first year and a half of the console's life just so they could push a proprietary format.

Don't get me wrong, microsoft are evil, but IMO sony are far worse. Do the words:

"Most people don't know what a rootkit is so why should they worry about it"

mean anything to you? :rasp:

As a secondary option, both the PS3 and Xbox 360 support simple USB Keyboards, so even the PS3 boys should have the option to jump in on the fun.

Damn your eyes :(

Still being saddled with a ps3 is punishment enough I guess ;)

Especially if the rumours about metal gear going multiplatform are true
