Thank you. :)
Rene suggested it be made a sticky too, but not sure if he meant now or later... ;)

Now I must ask, but does anyone have any theories about the belt buckle that Barrett is wearing?

http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/cc159/eternaltreasure/scan1-1.jpg http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/cc159/eternaltreasure/barrett-1.jpg

I know it could be just a personal item of clothing... but I'm figuring it could be part of the standard uniform.
If the latter, then I assume that Bull head might have some symbolism?

Many ancient cultures used the bull as some form of idol but I'm trying to stick to Greek mythology and the connection with Dedalos/Daedalus (inventor, and architect of the Knossos palace) and his son, Ikaros/Icarus.
These two names we are already familiar with... ;)

I say that after the bank closures at the end of the first decade of the 21st century a secret society was formed, made up of disillusioned ex Merrill Lynch employees, who aim to gain back all that they lost in the crisis...

Speaking of which, I think it'd be fun if they include future history books among the reading material in the game...

I also know that in Spanish culture, it reprisents opposition (Matador versus bull, running of the bulls, bullfighting, "The Barber" shortstory). To boot, bulls tend to be portrayed as aggressive, powerful beasts, perhaps a metaphor for the enemy themself?

And as to your theory about "002" meaning something, I think it means they're trying desperately to make the game even half as good as the second installment of the Deus Ex series. It's the one to beat, of course.

imported_van_HellSing
8th Oct 2008, 17:51
"Taurus" is a common name for security companies. I'm not sure where this is derived from, but probably from the Minotaur again (guardian of the labyrinth).

Or, it might be a reference to the golden bull Moses finds his people worshiping when he returns from the mountain after receiving the Commandments. Now, this again might be linked to the "religion against augs" trope.

Oh, and about the "002", probably means nothing, since there's another pic of the same general location with "003" instead, probably just sections of the building.

Lady_Of_The_Vine

Interesting theories on the bull symbolism, thank you all. :)

Oh, yeah, you're right about those numbers, thanks.
*Goes to edit out what I suggested...*

Romeo
8th Oct 2008, 18:10
Yeah, that's more than likely, but if anyone's ever read the short-story, "The Barber", it features a character who is... Well, a barber, first and foremost, but is also secretly part of a rebellion in Spain. One day, a captain (AKA, an enemy) comes in and asks for nothing more than a haircut. The captain's name is Taurus (Or perhaps Del Toro, it's been a little while since I read it. In either case, his name translates to "The Bull"). While he's shaving the captain's beard, he considers if he should simply push in on the razor (and kill a high-ranking enemy) or just give the man a shave and hope that he doesn't know he's a rebel. He eventually cuts the captain's beard, without killing him, deciding that he probably has troops stationed outside. And in a surprise twist, the man, described as a monster by the rebels, tips generously and walks out to the street, where there's no units protecting him (as in, he relied upon the belief that the barber was a good man).

Upon writing this, I've come to notice that this seems like an opposing introduction to Deus Ex, as in Deus Ex you always start out on the side of the government, and have the option to join the rebels. In this story, you start out on the side of the rebels, and have the option to join the government. I'm probably over-analyzing the connection, just seemed notable to me, that's all.

For what it's worth, the etymology of the name Barrett seems like it may be quite apt too...

BARRETT

Gender: Masculine
Usage: English
Pronounced: BAR-ət

From a surname meaning "dispute" in Middle English, originally given to a quarrelsome person.

Nice catch on the FFVII tie-in though, van_HellSing. I wonder how deliberate that was. :D

I still think he looks too much like Duke Nukem though. :p

No, wait a minute... now that I think 50 cal, it is in fact Barrett Firearms Manufacturing, Inc. (http://www.barrettrifles.com/)
Totally forgot that. :o

The fact that he has the buckle at all is kind of interesting. I don't know about other countries but big buckles like that are pretty popular here. maybe its signifies he's American?

And check out the stripes on his pants. kind of old fashioned military?

Romeo
8th Oct 2008, 21:46
They're not in abundance in Canada, but those who have them use them to express character traits, from what I've seen. And MrP, that is a beautiful weapon, huh? Apart from the raw power, the amount of planning that went into every aspect, such as handling, is incredible. Like the tip, it features two rear-facing vents, so when the spent gases leave the chamber, it "pulls" the gun forward, thereby relieving much off the force from the shooter's arm.

If there can be such a thing, yup. I reckon that's the epitomy of it.

As I said, I can't believe I thought of Beretta first when you said 50 cal.
A fairly prominent member on my own forum was a bit of a poster boy for the army featuring one, he put the shots (no pun intended) up here (http://www.wizdforums.co.uk/showpost.php?p=43745&postcount=131).

Hehe, you know what they say: Bigger is better. And that's a monstrous scope. I don't think what weapons are used for can ever be described as beautiful, but their architecture and design can be. That is one such weapon.

Response to Barret:
Well, he might as well be Gunther with hair and an American accent. XD

Response to ShangHai: I always liked the concept

But all in all, it's VERY odd that the tech in this game is far more advanced than that of DX1 for being a prequel to the games. I mean, yes, we're dealing purely with prosthetics instead of anything really nano-machine based, but you have to admit that DX1 looked no where near as sophisticated as this does. (Sorry if I sound like I'm bashing the game, or if I'm being nit picky) I just wouldn't think that tech like 'suspended cities' would appear in the prequel when it seems relatively new in the sequel.

But that's really just me. I'm really just hoping for a long, well-done game, both in writing, and in characterization.

Besides, I'm getting a "Ghost In the Shell" vibe over a "Final Fantasy 7" vibe. XD

well, DX3 is supposed to take place before the economic depression that grips the world before DX1, so maybe that has something to do with it.

Yup, rescue of babes is probably the only thing he is good at - being short of any obvious intellectual attributes, hehe. ;)

Hopefully, Barrett has got his brains in the right place (ie. inside his skull) and proves a real challenge in DX3.

Got some a bit bigger than that using a digicam. I need to blur text and get them down under a meg for photobucket though.

Had a few lighting issues - the halogen lights I normally use for close-ups went down too, so I had to take them at a bit of an angle, rather than straight on like that one.

Yeah, that's a good solution for now. Thank you.

But what about future images?

Are you able to split the first post and divide the images into two posts, placing them one under the other in the thread (so images are still together at the top on first page). Is this possible?
Or create a new post and add half the images to the new one; then place it underneath original?

Hope this is making sense. :o

P.S. Maybe delete 'miscellaneous' subtitle? Add the grenade into the weapons/gadget subtitle?

Yeah, that's a good idea.
Hijacking Van_Hellsing's account will be naughty and fun. :D

P.S Another option might be for me to start the thread again, but add into it up to, say, 10 separate posts with a category and add the art.
These 10 posts should allow adequate room for new pictures to be added, as they arrive.
Then you guys could split existing post discussions and merge it into new thread? Then lock older thread.
LOL, complicated...or what!?

P.P.S Or can Admin increase max image allowance setting on this board/or an individual thread?

P.P.P.S Finally, one other idea...
Maybe blend all the separate pictures together (category related)? That way, they become one image rather than 3 or 4?
But this may conflict with any max size settings...?

Nope. Thread merges are usually treated chronologically by the database. Newer posts would be appended to the thread in keeping with the time they were created.

I think that's asking a bit much for the sake of it.
If anything, I'd be inclined to rename the thread to PCZone Image Gallery Archive, as there are obviously only a limited number of pictures all told; replace each previous one with the best quality available; merge a bunch of the smaller pictures into one, as you've suggested and finally; just let people read the thread to see the latest additions as they're posted.

Adding them all to the first post really only benefits people seeing the thread for the first time who're too lazy to read through it all anyway. http://www.wizdforums.co.uk/images/smilies/shrug.gif

MrP, the whole point of creating this image gallery thread was to keep/archive all artwork/pictures together in one place. :p
As I'm sure we will have many more to come (before and after game release), then the suggestion of creating a series of posts into which I, or the mods, could add further pictures was a sensible one, in my opinion.
Lol, it isn't that I want to have lots of my own empty posts on view 'just in case'.

The problem otherwise is that pictures are shared randomly throughout different threads/posts but they eventually get buried inside all the comments/previous pages... and then we have to go searching for an image to reference it.

The art gallery thread idea was made to address these issues and keep all the eye candy in one, easily referenced place.

These two names we are already familiar with... ;)

It's not a bull. It's The Minotaur.
His labyrinth in the Knossos palace was designed by Daedalus and Icarus as you mentioned.

I'm feeling that a Theseus will be in the game. Maybe an I.A.?

Yes, indeed, I had given thought to the Minotaur aspect because of the Daedulus/Icarus connection.
But it can only be a minotaur if we know it's symbolism has roots in Greek mythology...this isn't yet conclusive (but does fit in with Daedulus/Icarus, for sure).
Generally, bull worship was globally quite common and has a very old history (Paleolithic cave paintings).

As it is only a bull's "head" on the buckle (not a Minotaur exactly, ie. half man/half bull figure) I was sticking to what we could see as far as discussion goes.
The Bull itself (the animal; not a mythological minotaur) was the central theme in Minoan Civilization in any case. I believe very few Minoan artifacts or images of a "bull-headed man" have ever been found... but plenty found depicting just a bull.
Frescos at Knossos portray bulls - particularly 'leaping bulls' and 'bull leaping': apparently these represented a ritual "initiation of the elite"... interesting. ;)
So, whether the buckle signifies a bull or a minotaur... we'll have to wait and see.

Glad you brought the Minotaur up though because yesterday I was thinking about the fetus in the teaser trailer, also "Adam" as a lead character and the general focus on 'birth/conception'.
As the story goes, Daedalus built Minos' wife a wooden cow in which she could hide from the wrath of Poseidon. Poseidon put a curse on her and she became impregnated and gave birth to a "horrible monster, the Minotaur.
So, its interesting that there also appears a sign/poster of a COW on the wall in the underground scene... or is it a bull? Not a minotaur though.

Still, Rene hinted to us about all this bull*** discussion (:D ) as, and I quote:

"Yes. Very interesting. Very interesting indeed."

I think we just might be on the right (cattle)track, guys, hehe. ;)

If we're to follow this theory (and I like this theory) through, the minotaur could symbolize the security force for the company that is constructing the AIs, which may or may not be Majestic 12.

I know that theory doesn't totally parallel the Greek myth, but I'm sure that Deus EX 3 won't jut be a retelling of Classical Mythology.

On the topic of Icarus, Daedelus, and being of Greek background myself, I did envisage (and was hoping) that Eidos would continue the mythological theme for naming AI and other technology in DX3. Don't forget the fore-runner AI, Morpheus, in Everett's house in France, named after the Greek god of dreams and Helios, named after the Greek sun god.

Before seeing the concept art, I thought that other AI would have been named after Morpheus’s brother Hypnos (the god of sleep) or something along those lines, given that Morpheus was probably invented around the setting of DX3. After seeing the pictures though it does make sense and the Minotaur would be used in this game. It wouldn’t be drawing much of a long bow at all to include Theseus and the Minotaur somehow in DX3.

On a side note, I too like to name my pieces of technology after Greek mythological characters. (as you can probably tell from my alias). My previous computer was named ‘Minotaur’, http://www.hardcoreware.net/image.php?src=2291&ts=1074482349 (for obvious reasons :p ). I decided to name it’s successor (my current computer) ‘Theseus’ as he was the one who killed the minotaur (and it’s also a pretty cool name) :p I also run 2 wireless networks at work & home and they’re named Icarus and Daedelus :p

So, for Barrett we have:

1) Possibility of his name being connected with his guns.
2) Possibility of his bame being connected with the Spanish word for "Bull" (which is a pretty good one, since we see a Bull on his buckle)
3) Possibility of his buckle insignia being connected with the Ancient Greek mythological tale of the Minotaur, which leads us to Thesseus who killed it and of course, Daidalus (who created the Labyrinth and had Icarus as a son - something that reminds us of Helios ;))
4) Possibility of his buckle insignia being connected with the worshiping of the "Golden Bull" from the Israelites. In this story Moses burnt the statue (historians suggest the this is becuase they were at the time entering the Age of Aries and leaving the Age of Taurus) and forced the Israelites to drink the remains: link (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_calf). Very interesting aspect, as it connects Religion with a main character of the game's plot ;)
5) Possibility of all these meaning nothing

---

What about the Hexagon AJ has on his skull? Apart from being a funny thing (Smoking - You grow Hexagons on your Skull :rasp: ), does it have any other meanings apart from shouting "Augmentation"?

Is it just a cool shape (with biological/chemical "roots") or is there something else in the plot? Maybe a large corporation's insignia/logo? ;)

---

I really like that AJ smokes. I am not a smoker and probably never will be, but a character that smokes in 2027 is something I like seeing. I just don't like all this "war" against smoking, since it's a thing people choose to do. Of course it's bad, but I haven't heard many smokers complaining. I even know people who got cancer and still smoked.

Stupid or not, it's a choice - and I like seeing that in Deus Ex 3. It feels a bit "outlaw-ish" too, since we all know that probably in 2027, there will be much more strict laws against smoking.

---

Finally, what I would like to comment about the screenshots, is that one thing came to my mind when I saw them: Blade Runner. If the dev team has something like that in mind, producing a dark sci-fi tale like this over-than-excellent movie, I would be simply amazed.

Nice job so far guys, well done

If the game has a good free-roaming system (or semi-free), I would be excited.

What I had in mind was travelling by train inside the city - actually getting on the train and making your way to the places you want to go. It would be interesting because on the one hand you would have the ultra-polished and excellent train for the higher society classes (we've seen the artwork from the station), whereas on the other hand the Metro train for the lower classes would be a real "mess", graffiti and propaganda posters everywhere (Half-Life 2 anyone?).

This artwork I have seen till now really lets my imagination "fly" :D

While the currently released images don't show as extreme modification as in Ghost In The Shell, it would be awesome if more detailed mechanical augmentation transformations are used instead of magic like nano-augs. Subtler augs may not create enough of differences between augmented people and normal ones to create the conflict between them :D.

Adam should pull a wire out of his skull or from his arm to plug in to a terminal to hack it :)

I'm not sure what the top grenade is. Some kind of smoke grenade?

The second one down immediately reminds me of the Scramble Grenade. But from the symbol on the side I'm not so sure. It could be a flashbang.

The third one is probably a Frag grenade.

The fourth is tear gas.

The fifth could be an early version of the EMP grenade.

Hm, you can import uncut-versions from neighbouring countries but I think that's quite a pain in the ass. You can't just wait for the first reviews and walk into the next shop on releaseday to buy the game, for example. Sometimes there aren't any localised uncut-versions either. Fallout 3 is the newest example. The German censorship of adult-stuff sucks. It's a good thing to keep kids away from certain stuff but it's a whole different situation when they ban or censor stuff that is meant for adults.

I've been studying the image and it does appear that the lower leg is angled differently from the norm. Except this post of course ;)

Yeah. As a game developer myself, I know exactly what you're talking about. ;)

It's far too early for in-game screens, let alone an in-game trailer. Just be patient.

There are in-game screens. Rene said so himself. A lot of them are concepts, but there are some in-game ones AFAIK:

etc, etc.

Haha, you guys thought they were all concept art? It's easy to tell the difference between an in-game screenshot than a concept art. DXeXodus speaks the truth.

At this point, it's highly debatable whether they can be considered in-game even if they are in-engine. Promotional screenshots frequently get touched up in all possible ways. Heck, those might be game assets rendered in a raytracing program or something.

DXeXodus
30th Oct 2008, 06:47
I don't know. They look more than believable in my opinion. There are several other images which looked like they have been post-processed over engine screenshots, but the few I posted above really do look in-game to me. And I swear I remember Rene saying that they are in-engine shots.

Maybe he can clarify when he is online later :)

[EDIT] @VodunLoas: Love the avatar BTW!

Oh yes, most certainly.

lol, thanks. The idea just came to me while trying to make an avatar using the hand.

Oh, and this proves that I am right about that screenshot: http://forums.eidosgames.com/showthread.php?p=848561#post848561

My guess is that the images that look like screenshots are renders using in-game assets (you can see the poly edges of the chair in the bottom left corner.) With so much post bloom and whatnot they look more like the kind of digital painting a studio would create as part of a mood board.

Edit: Just visited the link posted above and if Rene claims one of those shots is a screenshot then it opens the possibility that more images are indeed screenshots. It looks like the team is much more advanced in development than I thought, and insanely talented too, especially from a lighting perspective :) Ace work guys!

Yeah. I agree. The game is probably a a lot further in development than we may believe. It is looking absolutely awesome TBH.

Thanks for finding the quote VodunLoas  I knew it existed.

That's correct! :D My doubts about the TRU engine were thoroughly squashed when I saw the screenies.

This must be concept art to final in-game screen.
http://cyberic.nl/users/vodunloas/images/dx3/concept-ingame.jpg

The bottom image is in-game. I think the fact that it's a physical scan of a magazine page, and a small image to begin with, makes it look kind of weird, but that is running in-game.

Its not too often that you see concept art go straight into the game like that usually its changed up or used only to get an idea across  . besides the lighting I can't see much of a change.

I'm just kidding. Thanks for clearing up though Rene!

The in-game shots are awesome. I really hope they stay that way. Great work EM. Now, to start saving up for an upgrade.

gamer0004, thank you for those pics!!!!!

That 'new character' dude looks intriguing. Wonder if he's a good guy or a bad guy?

He could be Illuminati, and, as should be the case with Deus Ex, that means all morals are thrown out the window and nothing is good, nor evil.

I just noticed. The pistol looks like the barrel is ported (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/4/45/XD-40_V-10.jpg)but it is also shown with a suppressor (http://www.impactguns.com/store/media/aac/evolution.jpg).

The bang would just escape out of the holes and not be contained properly by the suppressor.

Maybe the compensator could be an attachment? :D

To be fair, Leon (http://img2.timeinc.net/ew/dynamic/imgs/040805/162615__pro_l.jpg)did the same thing so it's probably OK anyway.

Haha, nice.

I'm not sure if that's a vest. It looks photoshopped in over a trechcoat to me. :rasp:

Looks cool enough to me, as long as we can stick some armor under it :D

That's a really great picture! And if that is what Adam wears, I'm happy. But it could just be a photoshopped interpretation.

I stumbled upon these images/paintings while browsing through google images. They come from someone named Steven Wen. I don't believe Steven is on the DX3 team, guessing he does this for school or something. The website these images are from: http://blog.tritium-sand.com/

WOW.

Sorry Eidos, but this kid's got more mojo than your entire workforce. That last picture makes me want to jump right in and start playing. All I've seen from YOU are a collection of re-hashes( more labs, more weaponry that looks the same, typical villain types etc. ), and an unwillingness to break new ground for the storyline of the franchise by taking the quick and easy path to "Lucasville", though the retro-mods DO look inviting.

Even still, that is pretty darn impressive work! It just POPS right off the screen.

Sure, it's standard cyberpunk fair, but how many games give the player THAT experience? Anachronox , Deus Ex... can't think of much after that.

the tentacles might be more like eels there very efficient form water travel so more like deep sea creatures which is more acceptable to my mind(perhaps the first thing in my mind when tentacles are referred in futuristic setting normally involves Japanese porn but that's another story)
