View Full Version : Deus Ex 3 - Merchandise/Goodies - Do you want to OWN?!

Lady_Of_The_Vine
28th Jul 2008, 10:19
I was thinking what a shame that I don't own any actual Deus EX goodies. :(

For the first two games, merchandise was never offered, as far as I am aware. Same with another fave game of mine, Thief.
I think I read a while ago about a Deus Ex wall poster floating around but as I've never actually seen one for sale or mentioned as being owned, I'm not sure if this is just a myth or not. I've seen an 'unofficial' poster, but that's it...
Anyone own any early Deus Ex goodies? If so, please could you share some pictures and descriptions? Thank you.

Meanwhile, we do have the opportunity of discussing possible merchandise for Deus Ex 3.
So, what would you like to OWN?
My suggestions would be a poster, t-shirt and art book. :)

Whereas there are already 2 other threads about merchandise, it's always nice for a fresh start so we can filter the previous ideas.

Ideas that stood out on the other 2 include:
A LAM paperweight
A t-shirt with JC body armour pattern on it
A line of t-shirts with various quotes, lord knows Halo could do with some of those too
A pen that resembled the dragontooth sword

Frankly, I want the armour shirt, it looked pretty awesome and it would be different. The artbook would be pretty interesting too.

I do really hope they are going to do something about that. Can you guys post here some stores the other studios have on the internet?

The spyglass (or rather Looking Glass ;) ) says Dark Project II since it was made for the german edition of Thief II. Not pictured are the chocolate coins that were inside the purse.

There's actually quite a bit of Thief merch: http://ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=120199&highlight=merchandise

Very good thread! I'm interested in seeing what everyone would love to have in the Collector's Edition, or online store, even though we're still a long way away.

When I pre-ordered DX:IW I received a free t-shirt with Alex on it and the game title, pretty much like the box art. Unfortunately it was extra-extra large sized so I couldn't wear it.

Here's a top tip for publishers: if you offer free merchandise in the form of wearable clothing, please offer more than one size. Not everyone is obese ;)

To van_HellSing:
Wow! I never realised that there was so much Thief merchandise available.
I don't know why I missed news on all of that but I will admit that I hardly had the time (way back then) to join online forums/official sites like I do today. :o
Some of that stuff is really gorgeous. Thank you for sharing.
I missed out BIG TIME...!

To Augmented Cactuar:
I feel cheated! LOL. I preordered DX:IW and never had any freebies. :(
@ LOL at making sure that t-shirts come in different sizes in future. :D

To Rene:
I'm sooooo looking forward to getting my hands on a possible Deus Ex 3 collectors edition. You know, I wouldn't even really care what came with it. Well, I would... but either way, I doubt I'll be disappointed. ;)

T-Shirts and Polos would be great. Stickers with the lettering in neon-blue? Some figurines, even of the generic characters like MJ12 troops, would be cool.

EMP Grenade is more like it ;) Preferably working!

Though it's not even that far fetched: you can make one yourself (https://events.ccc.de/congress/2005/static/r/f/i/RFID-Zapper(EN)_77f3.html) with a disposable camera and some parts and a little modification :p Basically it 'only' has enough power to "zap" RFID chips into whatever realm computer chips go when they die, but who knows what would happen if you were to creatively aim it in the general direction of a CPU or something :D Sure, it'd need a million red warning stickers, but imagine how cool that would be, a functioning "EMP grenade" (or well, a glorified blue glowing paperweight with a built-in EMP/HE-RF/RFID-Zapper). I highly doubt there's ever been anything even as remotely k3wl33t as such a gadget ever coupled with a videogame in all of history.

I could try that if it ends up dying in another two years like I think it will.:D

It would be pretty funny if someone were to use it cause a small street lamp to go out. That street would be closed for the next few hours.

Can't believe that no one mentioned this...

JC Denton's glasses. Who wouldn't want to wear those shades at night (Unless you do not have augmented vision)?

NUKE! Cola: There has to be a description of it somehow! Or it can at least be a soda can cover.

A MAKO Dart Pistol: Get the people over at NERF to replicate that in a foam dart gun.

An Ambrosia Container Lamp/Piggy Bank: Imagine lighting up your living room with the nano-bots contained within an Ambrosia Container! Can also be used as a Piggy Bank

A LAM/EMP/Gas Grenade Night Light: Scare away the boogieman (Or MJ12 agents) with one of these imposing night lights! Red, Blue or Green light with optional blinking option.

Multi-Tool Cell Phone/Universal Remote Control: Imagine having one of these handy "Tools". Receive a call and if anyone tries to mess with the TV while your talking on the phone, BOOM! Switch the channel. Never know what'll hit them.

(Cheap Option) Multi-Tool Calculator/Flashlight: Never know when you might have to calculate your odds in the dark against the Karkians eh?

Pepper Spray [Not for children under the age of 13]: Get the actual Pepper Spray from the game! Not to be used on small mammals, robotic entities, and/or Biotic Agents.

Augmentation Canister Lamp: Have it illuminate your room while you wait for those Medbots to install it into your nano-systems!

Uhm.. I think that's all I can muster up for now :D

It could be a good thing. Merchandising could allow hardcore DX fans to support the game financially so the company doesn't have to cater to people who are looking for a mindless shooter. Buying merchandise is entirely optional anyway.

If they actually need the money then they should, but a lot of studios don't. DX1 was perfect and they never had any merchandise. At least I don't think they did...

The reason I don't like merchandising is because I don't like the idea of buying **** just for the sake of buying it. Especially if it's just a useless commodity. Of course I'm a hypocrite, though, I have Half-Life shirts and Pure Pwnage shirts.. :P

You know... a lot of this stuff would be quite easy to make.

The JC Denton t-shirt wouldnt be too hard to make, it's just a design on the shirt.

I have a bit of experience with fibreglass modelling and so on, and its not too hard to learn. You could really do a biomod lamp, or a flashing LAM paperweight. The designs are already there, its just a matter of bringing them to fruition.

The tough part would be getting the "firefly" effect happening.

I believe you will agree with me that all these things I will mention should
come with Deus Ex 3 for no extra charge.

1.A bad ass metal box, Kinda like the one they had for GTAIV that would
have the Deus Ex logo on it.

2.A Vile of Zyme. It would be shapped just like the Viles from Deus Ex 1 but instead of cocaine in it. It would be a Energy dring from Sobe or Perhaps monster's assault energy drink. It would have a SCREW off cap so it can be drank without loosing its collectors value. So the product can be kept
intact.

3.JC Denton Sun Glasses

4.Jc Denton Trench Coat

5.A wearable Unatco helm along with a mj12 helm

6.An assualt rifle and/or an assault shotgun.

7. A chain mail armor - Why? Just because

8.An all metal highly detailed replica of a lam that can be used as a paper weight.

9.Deus Ex 3 T shirt - With Deus Ex 3 Logo on front with the fetus thingy as well..as in the pictures

10.An Inflatable sex doll that looks like "a real life version" of Nicolette
DuClare from Deus Ex. The Paris chick...remember?

1. :D

2. Save it for the collector's edition.

3. If JC can wear them during a night operation, so can we.

4. The next time the president makes a speech, show up in the trench coat and the shades, and see how long it takes the Secret Service to "escort" you away from the crowd.

5. As long as it's full sized.

6. Assault Shotgun, definitely. Make it a paintball assault shotgun just for kicks.

7. Excellent reasoning.

8. I'm all for it, though I would want it as a keychain, or better yet, as a hard-shell iPod case. (Why? just because.)

9.

10. If they do Nicolette, they'll also have to do Maggie chow and Sandra Renton for variety's sake. I don't see this happening though.

Oh, I bet you wish that even HALF of these things came with the game!:D But you know which things on that list are outlandish anyway. The rest should go in the collector's edition.

But I've got to say something about #10. Nicolette was an important character, but the sex appeal of her and the other female characters in the DX universe have never been emphasized to such an importance that necessitates an doll of her in the collector's edition

We do not condone discussion about taking part in any illegal activities on the forums. What people do on their own is their own business; however this is not the place to discuss such activities. If you would not mention the action to a cop, then it probably shouldn't be posted here.

Before I was referencing heroin, not morphine, which may have to do with it, and heroine is illegal in most countries, while morphine is not. Even though they come from the same plant and are created the same way.

If you can build a lightweight EMP that can take out a street lamp, military will be at your doors in five minutes trying to get their hands on it.

Something like that can be built using a klystron and an MHD generator, but such a thing will be just barely portable and act using a narrow beam. Nothing even close to an EMP mine is currently possible.

I'd appreciate a fake multitool, maybe as hull for your car key, so that you could pretend to open your car from distance with a multitool? or a box with chocolate looking like the box of sniper ammo, although i don't knoiw whether there will be ammo-boxes again.

Masks like the ones NSF-troops wear woulöd also be funny...

I like the fake multitool key fob idea.

A bit worried about the mask idea though, hehe.

Only kidding... :D

To resurrect this, I would love to see DX3 revive the idea of DX novels. I have an idea here that I'd really like the team to absorb:

Graham McNeill is an absolutely phenomenal author. He just finished StarCraft: I, Mengsk and it was fantastic. He's also written several Warhammer books, none of which I have read.

William C. Dietz is the writer of Hitman: Enemy Within, released last year. So, he has written an Eidos title before. He's also written Halo: The Flood, and other original sci-fi stories.

In my personal opinion, after reading I, Mengsk, I think Graham McNeill would be better to write a complex and engaging Deus Ex story. I, Mengsk was also a Starcraft prequel, telling the story of Arcturus Mengsk and his family. He created fantastic characters and now I see Arcturus differently, now that I know his story. I think such a thing would be great for a character like Sam Carter.

The other thing about a novel series is, if certain prequel elements are left out of DX3, they could be done in the book series instead.

I know Random House publishing has done Hitman and Tomb Raider novels in the past so good find with William C. Dietz! This was something that was being looked into for DX3 a while ago so I'm going to go ping those responsible right now! Thanks for the reminder.

Pretty much anything shaped like a LAM, I don't really care what it is! It's such a great designed, awesome looking bit of kit. I really like the idea of a fridge magnet that was mentioned earlier (bonus points if you can go up to it and press a button to stop it before the "boom!") I'd also like to see a Laser Tag accessory shaped like a LAM, and which acts in the same way (but obviously with lasers rather than proper explosives! :D)

Art book for sure.

Definitely, I'm a sucker for art books for games with great art design, and I'm pretty sure Deus Ex 3 will have that (if not great game design.) Preferably it should be like Half Life 2's "Raising The Bar" artbook though, where it's got comments and random facts from the team so you can understand some of the development process of the game. If possible, it should also take the "Raising The Bar" route of having sections about the previous games in the series, as we never got a DX1 or IW artbook!

Don't call it "Raising The Bar" though. That name would be...innapropriate for Deus Ex 3.

Some really cool original ideas here - plush doll, keychains/paperweights/fridge mags, shades, and all the fake brand-name products. Even obvious stuff is cool cuz it's DX!

But I can't believe no-one has mentioned STICKERS & PATCHES yet...

Namely, shields, logos, insignias like NSF, UNATCO, MJ12, apostlecorp, OMAR (for myimmortal).

Are you NSF or UNATCO?

Even though it's something that'd be shipped with the game, I'd love to see something similar to the printed issue of the Midnight Sun that came with DX1. Was a very Origin-esque approach to in-universe 'feelies.'

Other than that, a pair of AJ's sunglasses on a nifty DX-style stand would be spiffy. After all, he's bringing back the whole 'sunglasses at night' gimmick from the first game.

I kind of liked the Ambrosia/Aug Canister lamp ideas. Maybe a quite fish tank filter thing to have particles move about. You also need a colored light. I think it would be extremely cool. But it needs to be out of and alloy of sorts.

And the LAM paperweight ideas sounds pretty epic. The shades are cool, but I have prescription sunglasses, a homage to my to favorite video game characters: Albert Wesker and JC Denton.

1. A trench coat to make me look bigger than I really am would be nice.

2. What would be cool is a a Statue of Liberty souvenir, broken and looks a bit burned. It could say "Thanks for Visiting!"

3. Mechanical arm: Like an old school biology model, just keep it on your desk, use it as a butt scratcher, etc.

4. Pellet shooting Barret model, like the one Snake finds of Raven in MGSII:nut:

I want an info-link. :nut:

Although I'll settle for an AJ bobble head or a life size, data-cube shaped pda. Think this (http://www.gamerchip.com/images/fallout-312.jpg) only all Deus Ex style.

But really, a poster and a hat would be sweet.

Art book for sure, maybe coupled with a "The making of" so we can see all the steps and previous iterations of characters and story plot elements leading up to the final cut.

The behind the scenes stuff interests me most, because the game is usually only half the story, the drama behind it completes it.

It's really hard to come up with universally liked stuff thats cheap enough to produce on an ESTIMATED level of selling. To be safe I'd reccomend a poster that ISN'T the artwork we see on the box on a larger scale, or perhaps just a few thick glossy stickers featuring the DX logo, the DX3 logo, maybe 3-4 of the major characters (and maybe an EM logo self plug)

I'd be willing to buy any T shirts that have Deus Ex on the front and on the back is a quote from one of the endings of the game.

If its just DX3 we're talking about, then Deus Ex 3 on the front and the "stepping stone" quote on the back.

Also, a bomb.

A proper manual. Like they used to make back in the old days when games still came in huge cardboard boxes. With tons of useless flavor text, interesting art and a proper description of game mechanics in the style of the setting. Something that has been missing from gaming for a long time. Bonus points if it comes in the form a datacube.
