View Full Version : DX3 Forum - CUSTOM TITLE Fun! Get creative!

Just a little fun, guys. Nothing to be taken too seriously. :)

I notice that this forum only appears to have two different custom titles (awarded on post count) that appear under your username and to the left of avatar.
They are "New Player" (for newbies) and "Gamer" (for more established members).

It would be cool if we could have different ones, after all this is THE official forum for the game we all love.
I know Admin could actually tweak the custom titles... so, who knows, if they like any ideas here, they may incorporate their favourites onto the board. I definitely love "Greasy Greasel" for a newbie name, hehe. :D

Have a go at creating your own list of custom titles (obviously, the names should relate to the Deus Ex game).
Start with the lowest (newbie) level first and work your way down to the highest level title. I guess we can use up to 8 levels, it seems to be an average number on other boards.

Have fun! ;)

My suggestions are as follows:

1. Newbie (1 to 50 posts): "Greasy Greasel"
2. (51 to 100 posts): "Killer Karkian"
3. (101 to 150 posts; and so on...) "VersaLife-r"
4. "Luminous Path"
5. "Universal Constructor"
6. "Mysterious Morpheus"
7. "Denton Dude"
8. "Helios Hero"

or something like:

LOCKPICKer
MUTLITOOLer
NANOKEYper
RIOTPRODer
DATACUBer
AUGCANISTer
BIOMODer

IMPORTANT UPDATE!!!
GoranAgar says we have can choose 15 new custom titles!
Go check out shortlist on Page 2 and add your ideas.

The current titles are

New Player
Gamer
Protagonist
Hero

I'd have to implement a user group to enable different titles for different people because by default the forum software does not know what you are here for. :)

Oooh, and I hadn't noticed anyone with the last two names on that list. :o

I like your custom title, hehe! :p

I wish I could be a Universal Constructor...

Anyway, what I would go with if it was DX-only (which is rather unfeasible - I know it can be done to a degree, but it's a lot of hassle just to make some people in the DX part of the forums happy) would probably be...

Hell's Kitchen Bum
UNATCO Grunt
MJ12 Mech
Nano-Augmented Agent
Denton Clone

Although I do think "Greasy Greasel" does have a certain quality ring to it...

Lady_Of_The_Vine

Hehe, love some of those ideas, particularly Hell's Kitchen Bum for the unsuspecting newbie! :D

Chemix
1st Jul 2008, 13:51
UNATCO/MJ12 Clearance Levels
Mortal (not in the game, as clearance level for grunts wasn't mentioned)
Saint (see above)
Angel
Power
Principality (I also don't recall this from the game, but the rest are apart of angelic dogma so...)
Throne
Cherub (see Principality)
Seraph (might have been there, don't remember)
Arch Angel
god

Other Thoughts:
Human to Transhuman
Fetus
Born
Raised
Trained
Forged
Transhuman
Metal Man
Nan-knight
Beyond
Illuminate
Majestic One
Truly Free

Another cool list there, Chemix!
My favourites are "Majestic One" (love the play on words... or should I say 'number' ;)) and Nan-Knight.

Hmm...in no particular order, just throwing them out as I think of them
Trans-genetic
NSF Grunt
MJ12 Grunt
MJ12 Commando

Nano-Augmented
Tarsus Student
Luis Pan
Dragon Head
Must be too early...I can't think of any more.

How do you get Protaganist/Hero?

Im not entirely sure. You probably need about 1000 posts or something. It would be cool to have a few more user titles here. Cos it doesnt take too long to have 'gamer' as your title, then thats all you are basically from then on.

How about:

0-49: New recruit
50-99: Experienced soldier
100-149: MJ12 Commando
150-299: Biomodified agent
300-499: Walton Simmons
500-999: Denton clone
1000-1999: AI construct
2000-----: JC DENTON

Used some of the already-mentioned ideas that I thought worked well.

Yeah, I meant to ask GoranAgar that earlier, but got side-tracked. :o

I imagine the post count must be quite high as DXeXodus states, around 1000?
I haven't noticed anyone on this board with either of those custom titles.

Walton Simmons was one of the best characters in the game. He rocked.

He was one of the most self-centered, arrogant, rude, evil, witty, and downright obnoxious characters in the game. He also had some of the best conversations with JC.

Walton Simmons FTW!

I'm liking Chemix's list of the UNATCO/MJ12 Clearance levels.

The Clearance levels would fit well.

From Theos Ek:

These are the only ones that appear in the game:

Angel/0A
Archangel/1B
Principal/2C
Domination/5F
Throne/6G
Seraphic/8X
God (?)

Here is the full model:

Angel/0A
Archangel/1B

Here what you say about discouring spamming for titles... but surely that doesn't happen very often does it? How about you keep the titles secret so that 'newbies' don't know about them and hence wouldn't wish to spam.

Awwww, I'm sad we can't have a more "deusex -y " custom title list. :(
So, now, we can only have one more game-theme title, is that right?

Well the new members see the titles on the other members and will start asking about them. So you can not really keep them a secret.

There is no limit to game theme titles. If you present me 15 wonderful new title ideas I might be tempted to implement them all. ... this is not a challenge.

What!!?? I've been here for like half a year and I already have 400+ posts! If I continue posting like this I'll have posted like 2500 posts by that time, which would almost make me a hero!

Uhm, I was actually thinking about more suggestions that are applicable to the general gamer type title list we currently use for the whole forum.

As for a DX based custom title list, I'd first have to check how to implement that. Because I am not sure how to set up promotions within open user groups.

And if I were to implement such a list I'd like to limit it to 8 different ranks.

If you're the admin that does the vB customization -- can we PLEASE have the auto sig ability. Clicking it manually on every post really defeats having a sig, if it's on only half the time (if you remember to check the box!).

But as for other game titles, would think using the terms that gamers give to themselves would suffice (barring terms like n00b and nub, etc.). ;)

I'm not sure if this is what you're referring to, so if it's not then just ignore this post!

But if I understand correctly, it's a setting you have to manually select in your forum profile (it doesn't default to On).

At the top of the forum, click "User CP", on the left-hand side, click "Edit Options", scroll down and under Thread Display Options click the checkboxes next to Show Signatures, Show Avatars, Show Images.

Hi Rene :)

I think it is something else.
I have all those boxes checked in my thread display options. It seems the signature only automatically displays if you are the original creator of a thread (and then only in the FIRST post). If you simply reply to a thread, it doesn't show. At the lower section of the message box the check box "show your signature" remains unclicked; so you still have to manually click it if you want your signature to show up in each post.

In vBulletin, below this edit box under Miscellaneous Options, usually when you click the "Show your signature" option box, it'll stay clicked (normal vBulletin operation). But apparently this is turned off throughout the Eidos site. It means everytime a sig is to be displayed a member has manually click the option to display the signature. If a member forgets, no signature will display, despite all other options checked to display them in the UCP.

As a manual option by default (instead of the norm of click it once and forget it) really defeats the purpose of having a sig, as folks will keep forgetting to click it.

If all Eidos forums have the signature setting to off, maybe it is an effort to save bandwidth?

With avatars yes, as it's uploaded and served on their dime. Sigs usually aren't, they are offsite and costs them nothing to serve them.

The only real issue is page load times, and for game sites (and considering who does play games and their PCs and internet connection [as new AAA games require broadband to play]), it's usually not a problem. It's why when you do goto game sites [like Gamespot and beyond] you can have full blown avatars and sigs. Dialups are rare there.

Members can also turn off every trinket if they want to not even worry about seeing it, if they want just text.

It's just strange to have sigs, but really just wanting the first post to have a sig, especially on a publisher's site. The same type of publishers who make games the require mega PCs and broadband to play, even.

There is a mod to do that even as policy (and today with the hook system, not having to worry about hand coding it in every upgrade). Leaves the sigs on, but just for the OP. Seen it in practice at a site long ago.

It's also not uncommon for them to turn off signatures just to avoid clutter. Although usually they will have strict regulations for signature sizes instead if that's the case.

Also, in retrospect, I think the Clearance levels do make more sense. Although I also think they're not very fun.

But none of this matters - I don't expect the staff to create unique user groups just so that we can all get DX-related user titles.

DXeXodus
3rd Jul 2008, 03:49
Well, even if they cannot give us more DX related titles, it would be nice to just have more generic titles in the list. The step from gamer to protagonist is way too big. 30 posts and 14 days to 3years. There should be a different title for someone who has a post count of 32 and someone with a post count of say 300.

In vB it's not even needed. Members can chose what they want to see -- they can turn it all off if they like to avoid clutter. vB has so many options, even how the postbit is handled (like the avatar and stuff on the left, use the legacy postbit; like the new top style, use the new postbit. Heck, you can chose how you like threads to be threaded even (if it's turned on, hated that option).

In the old days these restrictions had to be made there weren't options to turn things off, and dialup influenced everything (remember the 20kb limit on web pages vividly -- yes, only 20kb!). In the vB 3.x.x series (which this forum uses), that's not the case.

Seems more like personal preferences than technological limitations.

Tsumaru
3rd Jul 2008, 04:40
I never said it was technical; I said it was administrative. That's why they usually have regulations as opposed to completely turning it off. It's so people who want to see sigs don't have to put up with ridiculously large ones which clutter the forum. But I have seen some forums just choose to turn them off completely for various reasons.

It's not a big deal (have my sig and all on other sites), but it's a shame that game sigs can't be readily used on the very publisher's site!

DXeXodus
3rd Jul 2008, 06:34
I am not too bothered about the sig issue. It would be nice to have it the way it is on almost all other forums, but hey, you cannot have it all. The improved titles, on the other hand would be a nice upgrade to this forum IMO.

And could be why the site is dead. :(

Firstly, I don't think this site is dead. It's kind of 'slightly active' at the moment as the fans wait for something new to talk about. There can only be so much speculation before it runs dry. Once the info from the devs starts flowing we will surely see alot of increased activity on these boards

I'm saying the entire site, not just this sub-forum. For a game company, the site is pretty slow. Even the MMO forum I post on has more activity, and should have well less activity than a publisher.

I'm not particularly familiar with publisher forums or how active they usually are, but I consider the speculation that its inactivity is due to a lack of signatures to be absolutely ridiculous.

Been on enough, and Eidos forums are slow.

You'd be surprised how fast it can sink activity on a forum. Given a choice between a site that does offer them, and one that doesn't, they flock to the one that offers it. Heck, on a site that offers everything vB offers (vBlog and tools), and only lacks an IRC chat. The other site I'm on actually does, including the photo galleries and other custom script work (like real-time postings).

This is the Myspace and Facebook age, now. The same folks who look at a game for it's graphics before it's gameplay, too.

Didn't post there, but posted here. But remember when it closed. Not a happy time (except maybe for those with pitchforks for ruining DX).

Okay, forum settings and signatures aside... may I just recap on the custom titles here. :)

If GoranAgar is able to tweak the forum settings successfully (he is going to look into it...) we can have up to 8 special Deus Ex-related custom titles - absolutely unique to this group/us Deus Ex fans - cool or what?!

We have to shorten the original shortlist of 15 titles down to 8 titles.
The original list looked like this:

Greasy Greasel
Hells Kitchen Bum
Tarsus Student
UNATCO Grunt (or Soldier?)
Omar Trader
MJ12 Commando
AI Construct
Luminous Path (or Illuminated One?)
Majestic One
Universal Constructor
Denton Clone
Helios Hero

This is NOT a final list... it won't be final until we all agree upon it.

***

You guys now need to do three things:

1. Check all other name suggestions in this thread, there are many so please look and consider them all.
2. After No.1, you need to check the original list above and delete the ones you can live without until only 8 names remain.
After that, if you found any alternative name not listed that you prefer, then edit the list of 8 again to your final conclusion.
3. After No. 1 & 2, post your final list of 8 titles in this thread.
Please remember to list the names in ascending order according to your own opinion - start with the 'newbie' title first and end with what you consider the 'highest' last.

To get the ball rolling, here is the final list of my favourite custom titles:

1. Greasy Greasel
2. Tarsus Student
3. Omar Trader
4. Majestic One
5. Luminous Path
6. Universal Constructor
7. Denton Clone
8. Helios Hero

I will update this thread again at a later stage and post all our lists of 8 choices together so we can have one last check on what's been offered up and, from there, deliberate on a final shortlist.
Hope all of the above makes sense, hehe. :D

Okay, please post your final list of 8 names and we can take it from there.
Thanks everyone. :)

I'm gonna have to go with the access clearance codes, just because even though I said they're less fun earlier - they do make a lot more sense. And they kind of add to the cyberpunk feel of the forum. Rather than being a "Tarsus Student" or "Luminous Path" - your activity on the boards without being banned has led to a promotion to clearance level "Archangel/1B" or "Virtue/4E" as such. Also it's a bit less likely to have people post for the sake of custom title - and it does happen quite frequently on other forums.

So this is what I'm going for:

Angel/0A
Archangel/1B
Principal/2C
Power/3D
Virtue/4E
Domination/5F
Throne/6G
Cherub/7H
Seraphic/8X
It's technically 9 titles, but I don't think it would matter that much. Or maybe Seraphic/8X is something only the mods get. =P

That is if they decide to do it anyway. And I don't really care either way if they do or don't, personally.

No problems, Tsumaru. I will add your preferred list in a compilation post later on.
I hear what you say, but please can you reduce that list to just 8 names so it easy for us all to choose a final list later? Thank you.

I like the clearences, but the other ones too. I'd like it if they were adjusted to this:

1. Greasy Greasel
2. UNATCO Grunt
3. Omar Trader
4. MJ-12 Commando
5. Tarsus agent
6. Majestic One
7. Denton Clone
8. Helios Hero

My 2 Credits worth:

1. Greasy Greasel
2. UNATCO Grunt
3. MJ-12 Commando
4. Tarsus agent
5. AI construct
6. Luminous One
7. Denton Clone
8. Helios Hero

Its just so difficult to narrow this down

I personally prefer the different game related titles over the clearances.
Maybe once we have a near to final list for both options we can run a poll?

I looked into it and it is not as easy as I hoped it would be.

There are primary and secondary usergroups. The primary usergroup is what you are all in now with the New Player, Gamer and so on. The new user groups would only be interesting for Deus Ex 3 enthusiasts. But how do we determine you as such. That could be done by public usergroups that would be set as your secondary usergroup and would provide you with a Deux Ex related custom title. But promotions do not work for secondary usergroups.

The only way is to do it is to change each interested users primary usergroup manually.

There is a hack that allows you to determine the primary user group based on a selection made during registration. But I do not like hacks, because you have to fiddle with them after each forum upgrade.

So, that is where we stand at the moment. I am sorry I do not have any better, final news, but we'll keep thinking about this.

@GoranAgar _ I hope you can find a solution to it. I would be great to have at least a few more titles between gamer and the 3year Protagonist:
Ok, posting for three years, he is a true Protagonist, but this next steps is huge and in line with the other titles sounds a little freaky :)

There is a hack that allows you to determine the primary user group based on a selection made during registration. But I do not like hacks, because you have to fiddle with them after each forum upgrade.

Many of the 3.6.+ mods now are based on the hook system. This saves the trouble of hand coding like 10 or so php files for every mod, that's usually overwritten in each upgrade. One of the biggest improvements to vB all together -- no more dread of an upgrade and recoding everything again. Plus, template changes don't require closing the forum to change code.

And since you're here (and getting you before you're gone!): the "view post" link button is missing. Query is still there but missing the image.

No, he is right. It is supposed to be a button. But only IE is showing it like this. Firefox shows a text link made from the alt text instead. That is why I did not notice it.

Thanks for the info.

Here's my mean little list, which has nothing to do with Deus Ex:

Useless whelp (0-25)
Useful whelp (26-100)
Beginning addict (101-250)
Partial Addict (251-500)
Total Addict (501-1000)
No-Life-Larry (+1000)

In IE it shows the text link, but it's expanded for alt text and also shows the placeholder. It's still a query to a missing image as shown with the "X" box and is a dead call (even though the image doesn't show, a call still goes to the database. No performance gain). Simply removing the image won't make the call go away.

If you're trying to save bandwidth and server calls (both for images and database), you'll have to edit the corresponding php files as it's v-e-r-y hard coded (remember that image is also shared on the forumdisplay.php/template for the last post pointer).

vB has zillions of options, but it's no picnic trying to change default features. Too much still is hard coded. :mad2:

By the way. Is there any possibility of incorporating some kind of reputation system. It is used in alot of forums and it is a nice way to see who is a complete idiot and who actually takes pride in their posts and posts constructively.

I am not a big fan of that function. It is not completely bullet proof. Usually unhappy people are motivated to use that function. If you have a member that really cares about this forum and tries to ask people that misbehave to stop, this member would also get a lot of bad votes over time.

And it may answer the long page load time, too. Missing calls will do it.

Terrible function. Not only because any driveby can and will use it, it makes a forum a popularity contest - mob rules. For tech sites it has a purpose [who to pay attention to as their advice works]; sites that sell things [who didn't rip off who]; but for sites like this, where gamers contest the minute details of a title, it's suicide. Takes a-l-o-t of moderation work to operate well, too (why it's best for more pro sites, where folks go for help or commerce, where there's more objectivity and evidence to disprove sheer personal preferences). Creative uses it, and one blow up with a product, you can see how quickly the angry types get reps. Not what I think the company actually wanted, to actually promote their own negativity.

I agree with the majority here, a 'reputation' function isn't necessary... in fact, it would suck. As ScadVid said, it would only be useful if you are seeking important technical or product advice etc.

Yeah, a reputation function would probably suck. It would only serve to make people like Agnostic Jive for example to look like idiots after spouting off some kind of elitist tripe that is only partially correct.

No comment on that, sorry. :p

Another negative aspect of the reputation function is that you also get people starting threads - "Rep me and I'll rep you" kind of thing; or PMing you to request the same thing.
That would be annoying. :(

What for? To establish ranks between people who spend hours on the forum and regular visitors? A reputation system on a forum is an addictive, false and vicious system for several reasons.
