I got Super Mario 64 back in Sept. 1996 and thought, "wow the graphics are amazing! It's like playing a cartoon!"
Then two months later I played Tomb Raider for the first time, "wow the graphics look like real life!"

This goes on and on with each new generation of consoles, and each time I look back at the games and now think "they look like crap".

Case in point, The newest Tomb Raider game: Underworld.
Back when TR: Legend came out on 360 I thought Lara looked amazing, the best polygonal build of her yet. But now there's Underworld.

I can't believe how much more realistic looking she gets each game. Like I said, at the time I thought Legend Lara was awesome, but next to the Underworld Lara, she looks like a cartoon.

You guys ever notice your nostalgic games don't hold up so well with time?

Compared to Legend with the Barbie doll waist, she's a LOT more realistic. I really love how they've toned her up. Maybe a little more definition in the legs.

Now cover the midriff and she'd be perfect. :D

In the first picture they look almost the same. Except for TRU's Lara's broader shoulders. Her facial expressions look "darker" like a bad girl...i dont like it very much. OOH she looks AMAZING in those pants of hers

I dont like how OLD she looks, she looks around 40 with THAT MUCH of make up...i dont know.. she doesnt look natural..lara croft wouldnt PAINT her face that way when going to an adventure..

her guns also look older..they look more like TRA's. I expected them to be more modern than in Legend, but..all the "contraire".

I really love her pants. Compared to Legend-Lara she looks so much more realistic!
Though I would like if they changed her eyebrows a bit. She looks so angry ..
I was just thinking: How the hell is she supposed to get that top on and off? As tight as it is, I don't think it would be possible to get it off without using a scissor..? Of course it doesn't matter, but it just looks so tight that it almost would be impossible to breath in it

that is the problem with computers graphics. the next version always makes the old one not so good. although, i think she still looks really good in TRL.
i'm justglad that they are finally making her breasts look more natural, instead of them being up around her armpits. And from the other screen shots i've seen you can see good muscle deffinition. she is now very well detailed.

This is clearly the best lara model yet. I hope CD keep this one. I liked the original TR Legend model but they ended up changing it to the one that appeared in the game and she looked to prissy and young...like what I would expect teen lara to look like on the PS2/360 ****

TR;A's Lara to me was perfect but this one is just magnificent, they seem to have finaly got Lara's figure back to the way it used to be. Does it remind anyone else of AOD lara, especially the second one, it looks the double of the box art for AOD.

I know what you mean. For Legend and Anniversary, I thought I'd be playing as Lara shown in teaser trailers and/or box art covers which were quite different compared to the in-game of both. Wonder why that is...

They'll likely keep the current Underworld Lara until the next gen of consoles, XBox number 3 and PS4, are released.

Because it just underlines my belief that the developers have become obsessed with Lara. Tomb Raider isn't about Lara, it's about the tombs. I couldn't care less about how she looks, she looked fine in the original TR1. I initially looked in this thread because I thought there'd be pics of the levels, some location shots, that sort of thing.

I can understand what you're saying, Spong, although I don't think it's quite as bad as that. After all, we as a community are obsessed with Lara. Failure to treat Lara with proper respect (i.e., serious amount of work) would also be a grave error.

However, I do think they are a little to "in love" with Lara during the game. After playing TLR and watching my son play TR2, it's obvious the environments were the real stars in the older games. In the newer games, the camera hangs so close to Lara it's difficult to really get the jaw-dropping feel of being somewhere so huge. When I've played the newer games, I keep thinking "pull back! Pull back! Give me a view."

Don't get me wrong, I love watching Lara, but it's Lara relative to the environment that I find interesting. Heck, it's the environment that makes Lara interesting, so I'd like the in-game view to give them equal love.

Spong
16th Apr 2008, 13:58
...we as a community are obsessed with Lara.

Not me I'm afraid. I'm obsessed with Tomb Raider, Lara just happens to be a part of that. If fate had taken a different course and Lara had been anyone else, it wouldn't have made an iota of difference to me. It's the levels that used to be the star, as you rightly said Lisa. And those levels have steadily grown worse since Chronicles. I really don't hold much hope for Underworld.

:(

Fickji
16th Apr 2008, 18:51
I see this model of Lara as a tidbit of what we'll see in the actual levels. If she's this detailed in the game than the levels themselves must really be detailed and wonderful/beautiful.

And if she shows up like this in the cutscenes WOOWHOO. :D

I can't wait to see what people do with the fan music videos.

I agree Tomb raider is about the lush environments that we as a player are taken to with Lara. But I thinks it's safe to say that if Lara had been replaced with 'Larry' The cheep and cheerful Indy rip off that Core originally lined up as the main character, Tomb raider wouldn't have been the hit it was and certainly wouldn't have as many fans as it did. Lara, is part of TR for me as was interesting because she was new, she was feisty, she was intolerant and she kicked ass- not because she has big 'appendages' or looks good showing off her mid-riff. As much as people don't think she should be Lara is as much a part of tomb raider as the 'tomb!' That's why she is so focused on I guess. And that's why I like seeing the detail on her as well as the environments.

The new lara looks pretty good, but have you noticed that she is ever so slightly cross eyed. I am not joking, look carefully

Yeah, that's the first thing I noticed (critically) too - the pupil distance isn't wide enough for the exaggerated angle of the eyebrow, especially in the two shots where she's standing at a slight angle. It reminds me a little of D'Lenn in Babylon 5. That'll likely get tweaked along with a million other things in the game before it's released though.

I'm thinking I liked her face in Anniversary a bit more than this, but not to overstate. I think giving her the brooding "bad girl" expression is less effective at conveying a bada$$ attitude than simple understatement and contrast: A sunny disposition + deadly moves = smokin' character.

At any rate she's lookin' good - but then I've thought so for every new LC incarnation. Well I thought the first images for the Legend Lara - that 360 view overlooking the waterfall - looked too much like Claire Danes in T3 (http://www.imdb.com/media/rm1014601984/tt0181852), especially her face and hair, but fortunately they changed that before Legend came out. Other than that, it's all groovy IMO - though I hope they haven't ditched her iconic aqua-greenish shirt altogether. And I hope they just make different clothes selectable options rather than things you have to unlock - different outfits are interesting as variations, but I'm not interested in going out of my way to collect items just to see her in different clothing.

Also I'm with Spong, to a degree - it's not just Lara or just the Tombs, it's the whole package. I'm not gonna obsess too much over the fine details of her appearance, but it's fun to bounce it around.

And check out the photorealistic texture of the mesh on the side panels of her top - amazing! Like it just came off the rack at a sporting goods store.

Now just gimme the game! :mad2: Ok, make sure everything works perfectly, then gimme the game. But...hurry!

hmmm ... this made me think of my german shepherd when he was a 3-year old. he (and i) hadn't seen my sister during his entire puppyhood. eventually, she came to visit and my mild-mannered pup, who never barked at a squirrel, went berserk. he would have ripped her to shreds, snarling and growling and carrying on. what calmed him down (and my sister) was me giving her a long-lasting hug while he watched in amazement. later on we figured out that he was aware of the huge similarities between my sister and me (body chemistry, voice intonation and quality, etc.) but was tormented by the obvious difference. when he first saw her, I wasn't around and it must have confused and possibly repulsed him. the best part of this story is that he and my sister became the best of friends soon after this anomalous and isolated event and he never so much as bared teeth at another person in 14 years. that was one weird moment and so possibly animal psyche's also follow the Mori curve.

as for Lara, i've yet to meet a pixel or polygon that repulsed me ...

That is such a cool story, rabid! I really like how it turned out. Your puppy must have been so very confused and frightened, I am glad the situation resolved itself. :D

Oh, and what about bacon Lara's polygons? ;)

what about bacon Lara's polygons?

well, TRA bacon Lara was properly repulsive ... :D
my loophole for that is the fact that Bacon Lara wasn't the real Lara ...
the real Lara, in all incarnations, just rings my bell.

(in my copy of macintosh TR1, bacon lara was a black silhouette shadow figure, which was kinda cool.)

Boobs.Are.Too.Big.

Don't you remember how Lara's figure looked in Tomb Raider II? Core Designs gave her huge tits then. At least Crystal Dynamics have given her back what should never have been taken away. In my opinion the Legend Lara's boobs we're somewhat reduced but her oversized shapely pelvis was very much like the Tomb Raider II Lara. I understand that people are having a very hard time adjusting to the next generation Lara and all I can say to that is, cherish the original 'classic retro cartoon' Lara and try to learn to love and appreciate the more life-like Lara. Having new generation graphics is just the same as having a state of the art cell phone or the latest mp3 player or swankiest car. Nothing ever stays the same, remember that.

Looking at those Lara renders is making me kick myself for not going into 3d computer graphics in college but those images are so inspiring for me to somehow get into the video game industry at some capacity. Now all we have to see is Lara in motion which will be the real litmus test. It will probably be even more amazing.

 well I’m not a breast man so what ever but; it was her face I adored:o in TR2 -3, and even in the TR4 and, the AOD face I could come to accept; besides that, the environments and being able to explore them was my draw-in which hooked me to the TR franchise to begin with; but now concerning her face, it seems for me she is looking more and more unrecognizable almost like she really did give up the ghost in TR4 and "they" Hurriedly sought an look-alike with to much Botox injected between the eyebrows.:mad2:

Since I love exploring virtual realities’ I will surely accept Lara any way CD or who ever makes the resolution, besides TR was my first experience with VR so I can't turn my back on that history.

:) Thanks for posting the new pix

I hope it is ok to express my ill-bred opinions’ this time around

Yeah that oldy. The one where she was running around inside a skyscraper with the black guy talking smack to her over her radio. The art wasnt nearly as good as the latest but I confess, that skintight catsuit Lara knocked me out of my chair. I've never fully recovered.... :nut:

I prefer her face in "legend" than her face in "underworld". She squints and she is less pretty. Otherwise her body is better drawn. (In my opinion !)
