Just found this. It airs March 15th.
Mayan Underground
BTW, you will probably hear the name Linda Schele during the show. She's the art history student who when down to Palenque and debunked all of von Däniken's Chariots of the Gods stuff. She was my professor in college. Brilliant woman and teacher.

Saw that advertised, looking forward to watching it. Interesting about the professor who debunked the von Daniken "aliens built the mayan empire" stuff, good on her. Most of that was, I believe, based on the saracophagus cover of Pacal, Lord of Palenque, that supposedly showed him at the controls of a starship instead of the symbolic representation of him communing with the gods or whatnot that it really depicted.

The other 70's pop culture conceit current at the time was that the Mayan culture disappeared because the aliens spirited them away into space, and that they were a peaceful culture that reflected the idealized conception held by the 70s "new agers". Of course, the reality was that the Mayans never left, and are still there, their culture's collapse a result of a mixture of savage inter-city wars, overpopulation as compared to available food production ability, and finally, disease and conquest of brought by the Spanish conquistadores.

True, but that hardly makes for gripping television, does it? LOL. Between Mayan mysteries and lemmings, will we ever be able to trust our TVs again?
