View Full Version : Lara's Birthday Celebration! Win a copy of TR: A and a surprise signed by Toby Gard!

John Carter
4th Feb 2007, 02:19
In less than two weeks it will be birthday time for our favorite Tomb Raider! To celebrate Lara's birthday and ten years of Tomb Raider, fans have an opportunity to submit either written or artistic birthday tribute to Lady Croft, and thus get a chance to win a copy of Tomb Raider: Anniversary, in the format of your choice, AND a commerative goodie item (exact type to be determined) signed by Toby Gard, Lara's creator!

Here's how it works- Fans can submit either-

Fan Art- May be drawn, painted, digitally colored or digital art using programs such as Maya, Poser, 3DS, etc, scanned and sent as a .jpg attachement. OR-

Fan Writing- Poems, short stories or essays not to exceed 500 words, in English, in MS Word doc. or compatible text format.

Each submission should focus on the theme of Lara Croft's birthday, either as a virtual person having a birthday or, on her tenth birthday as a game character and game series.

Each piece of fan work submitted must be the original creation of the submitter, made just for this contest and not previously posted anywhere else, no nudity or sexual content allowed of any kind (needless to say).

All submissions must be emailed to address removed not later than Feb 14th, 2007. Judging will be done by the Eidos Tomb Raider forums staff under the direction of Keir, Eidos Community Manager.

Prizes are three Tomb Raider Anniversary games in the format of the winner's choice, along with a neat item signed by Toby Gard, creator of Lara Croft. One prize will be awarded in the Fan Art Category, one in the Fan Writing Category, and one prize to a runner-up from either category.

Winning entries will posted in the Tomb Raider: Anniversary forum, and prizes will be mailed to the winners when the TRA games become available.

Further rules for this official Eidos promotion are as follows-

1. Winners will be notified within 52 days of closing date by e-mail or Private Message on http://forum.eidosgames.com. 2. A list of winners, including names and country, will be available within 6 weeks of competition closing. These can be obtained by sending a Stamped Addressed Envelope to the Promoter (see 9 below). 3. Eidos Interactive accept no responsibility for entries/prizes lost or distorted in transmission. 4. There is no cash alternative to the prizes. 5. Eidos Interactive reserve the right to substitute prizes with others of at least equivalent value. 6. Competition not open to employees of Eidos plc, their agents and suppliers. 7. The Promoter's decision is final and no correspondence will be entered in to. 8. No purchase necessary. 9. The competition promoter is Eidos Interactive Ltd, Wimbledon Bridge House, 1 Hartfield Road, Wimbledon, London, SW19 3RU.

So, only a few days left! Get your creative juices flowing and say Happy Birthday to Lara in prose or art! :D

Eidos should be able to receive files up to 7mg. Scale it down and try again. It doesn't have to be a huge picture to compete. ;)

CatSuit&Ponytail

I think that would be cool, Fan Art is an ever increasing genre after all. ;)

So sing like the little birds, and send it in....Just don't copy it "Happy Birthday" or you'll have to pay royalties. ;) As with the other types of Fan Art (and this is for the other members, I know you already know) the entry has to be original.

It would appear we have more artists here than writers, and I haven't seen anyone else post their short story, so what the heck, I'll post mine. Let me lay down my excuse right up front, I didn't have time to make it exactly what I wanted, in fact, I couldn't even think of a good title, but it will do. I hope you like it.

10 Years of Tomb Raiding

Forward to a hole in the floor, and on to who-knows-what awaits us. Way back, when I questioned my existance in this cold, cruel, confusing world, I discovered that adventure was my game, and Tomb Raider was adventure. Lara and I hit it off almost immediately. Lara helped me keep my sanity, and gave me a purpose while we were together, in fact, we helped each other out of many a sticky situation.

Back to the hole in the floor. Down we went, and through a short hallway, which opened into a large room with several 30-foot elevated stone walkways and a pool in the center.

"You decide this time where we explore, except keep to the upper levels first, in case we can't get back up, and watch you don't fall off this time." said Lara with a smirk.

"That's just what I was going to suggest." I replied, trying to sound all-knowing. Lara rolled her eyes to the heavens (again), and we headed down the elevated walkways.

A couple of jumps, a couple of jogs, a couple of climbs, a couple of dives, a couple of rounds, a couple of hours, and we had the room explored as much as we could.

"We've searched everywhere, but came up with nothing." I said. "It must be a bug in the level, I'll load up a savegame."

"Whoa there, Dr. Jones, what happened to that tomb raiding quality, perseverance."

"What's wrong with a savegame?"

"You know I'd rather die trying to find the way out."

"I'm too tired to search any longer." I exclaimed, exasperated. "Aren't you getting impatient?"

"Patience is a tomb raiding quality, as is perseverance. A little more of both wouldn't hurt you."

"Yeah, thanks for the advice. I've gotta go. Check around and see what you can find." With that I abruptly saved and left.

The next day, I was back to Tomb Raider. There she was, her back to me, contemplating the room.

"Did you find anything, Lara?"

"You know I don't raid when you're away."

"Any advice?"

"Have you learned nothing, my young tomb raiding companion? Perseverance."

Of course Lara was right. Eventually we discovered a dark corner I had overlooked previously, which cleverly concealed a crawl-space. To make a long story short, we finally beat the level.

"That feels great!" I exclaimed. "All the pain and suffering was worth the satisfaction of conquering that which seemed unconquerable. Thanks, Lara."

Perseverance is one of the many lessons I learned from Lara.

"I'm so glad you decided to hang in there." said Lara, almost as relieved as I was. "What a thoughtful gift, I might add."

I checked my watch and groaned at the late hour. Then I noticed the date. Had it been 10 years already?

"Happy Birthday, my dear Lara."

Instead of a smirk, Lara had a big smile.

Oh, what the heck. I guess I will post my short story now. I wrote this in my head whilst on my way home from class on Monday night. The first name mentioned is made up, and the brief history I used is part true. I had a more elaborate beginning and some other bits of dialogue towards the end, but they breached the 500 word rule by 55. Here it is, my short story, which is EXACTLY 500 words. I called it "Birthstone."

Jon Weller’s study telephone interrupted his examination of his newly acquired prize. He reluctantly answered with a short, gruff, “Yes?”

“You have something of mine,” a familiar female voice bluntly stated.

Weller’s demeanor changed. “Ah, Lady Croft, how are you?”

“I was devastated when I returned home from holiday this morning to find that someone had broken into my home and stolen something from my locked vanity and not my artifact vault.”

“Lady Croft, I have no idea what you are talking about,” he cooly replied.

“Oh, I know you do. And it’s not very nice to steal from a lady on this most special day.”

Weller guffawed at that statement. “Miss Croft, I’m so sorry someone stole a necklace from you on Valentine’s Day. Why don’t you come over here and we’ll have dinner. It’ll cheer you up. Why spend this day sulking?”

“Mmm. Don’t flatter yourself, Jon. We have nothing in common. Besides it being Valentine’s Day, this day also holds some significance to me.” She paused, and Weller waited for a continuation. “And I never said what was stolen from me, Jon, so hand over my amethyst pendant.”

“You have no proof it was me.”

“Please. You have an affinity for rare gems and jewelry and was absolutely mortified in Rio de Janeiro when I outbid you on that auction for the pendant. So where is it?”

“In my hand. I have a buyer coming any minute now to pay me triple what you paid. This is a rare piece indeed, probably the only of its kind.”

“And knowing you, that’s all you know of it.” Lara sighed. “That particular piece was produced by the Tupinamba Indians of Brazil well before Portuguese rule. It was worn by the wife of their first Indian chief and passed through her lineage. No shade of this amethyst has ever been unearthed. It truly is special, especially to me, on my birthday. Which is today.”

“And why, pray-tell, is it so special to you?”

“It’s a one-of-a-kind shade of my birth stone, silly.”

Weller’s doorbell rang. “Ah, that’s my buyer now. I have to cut this short.”

“Don’t you have something to say to me?”

“*#$§%&$*#” He hung up the phone and ran eagerly to the door. He opened the door only to find an unconscious “buyer” fall into his entry and a woman aiming a gun at his head.

“Now is that any way to speak to a lady on her birthday? Hand it over.” He handed her the pendant with trembling hands. “If you cross me again, it surely will be the last time for you. Are we clear?” He nodded. “Now what do you say?”

“Happy Birthday, Lady Croft. And many more.”

Smiling, she turned and walked a ways, only to snap around again to fire a shot at his head as he cocked his own weapon. He fell over the unconscious buyer.

“Noble last words, those were,” she said as she strode away with her prize.

I'm glad I posted my short story. Maybe posting my short story was the catalyst needed for other writers to get over their "shyness". You want fame and fortune, don't you? (Well, one outta two ain't bad. :p) Let's see some more stories!

Mertz523
17th Feb 2007, 19:05
Thanks, mezmacko. And thank you, Ruum. Your story is very different and very creative.

I've posted stories before and have had them stolen. That's why I didn't post mine (plus I'm new to the forum). I do love to write. It's pretty much the only thing I'm good at, and I hope to make it as a screenwriter once I graduate college.

I was kinda wondering why you all were posting your pictures on a public forum during a contest. Seems like a friendly competition, though, and there seems to be a lot of cool people on here. If I even possessed an iota of artistic ability, I MAYBE would have posted my picture.

Anyone else submit a story?

LOL, I just saw a word of my dialogue was censored.

It's going to take a bit of time for all the individual judges to look at them, decide, and tally the results. I'd say probably couple of weeks to a month, don't know for sure. It's made very hard by all the great entries! Lara had a fantastic birthday this year, in terms of all the fabulous creativity of her friends! :D

... Let's see some more stories! ...

sorry, the thought of posting my story here is like ...
well anyways, here's a slight peek-a-boo:

the writing was a page torn from the diary of Lara Croft.
the date was February 15th, the day after Anaya hosted a wonderful surprise birthday party for Lara.
Lara, and friends (mentioned in the Legend flashback and from other sources) were nearing the end of university studies.
Lara was gearing up for a "secret" trip to the Himalayas.
the diary writing provided a "back story" for various characters,
including Prof. Eddington, von Croy and Nishimura.
the writing (in under 500 words) concluded with Lara thanking one and all for making her birthday special!

i would like to wish everyone that entered the contest the best of luck!
you gotta like the way that eidos and company are promoting 10ann.
i've got this feeling that we are really going to enjoy playing this game!!!
i can hardly wait ... :)

Sounds interesting, rabid metro. Would love to read the actual thing, tho, but that's cool if you don't wanna post it.

Take care and good luck to all!!

@Keir: Did you receive my entry? I'd send it to the new adress.

This picture looks a lot like mine

I knew it that I shouldnt have posted it here too... but I had no choice :( Imail problems and I had to finish it on the 7th because on the 8th february I had a flight to Italy at 5am. And I was 2 weeks in Italy on a school project so I had no way to finish it properly. So I am really dissapointed that It is rushed.

Final votes for the third winner being tallied now- shouldn't be long after all the judges provide input. :)

OH, the suspense is KILLING me...:mad2:

LOL, not really. Looking forward to hearing the results as my friends and family keep asking me if they chose the three winners yet. It's getting kinda annoying, actually...

Or is this an April Fool's Joke and we actually won't hear a response 'til well after TRA is released? :p
