View Full Version : United Colours Of Lara Croft 2007 Challenge engages!

MissLara2U

Lara Croft is without doubt a globally recognised icon, and the success of our original United Colours Of Lara Croft challenge proved our fearless aristocrat is still beating the drum a decade later. So we're back with another exclusive competition, and this time we're asking fans to download a stunning render from Tomb Raider Anniversary and dress up in their own country colours.

Our Lara Croft render comes in three flavours. Two JPEG versions (Lara on black and Lara on white) and a special transparent PSD for those with a flair for Adobe Photoshop. An example of previous challenge entries - mobilised prior to the release of Tomb Raider Legend - can be seen here (http://www.tombraiderchronicles.com/tr7/unitedcolours.html).

Entries can be uploaded to either www.imageshack.us or www.photobucket.com, and posted on this special thread (http://www.tombraiderforums.com/showthread.php?t=84845) on Tomb Raider Forums or right here on Eidos Forums. We'll collect the cream of the crop and publish exclusively on our magazine. Two winning entries will be selected end of February 2007, and both will have their names embedded in Tomb Raider history by appearing in the credits of Tomb Raider Anniversary!

Good luck, and happy raiding!

Right on, Cat! If I hadn't seen anything from Canada, I thought I might have given it a try, but I would have never come up with anything as nice as what you have produced. I'd say that represents Canada...fridgid, furry, vast, proud, and, shall we say, tantalizing! Excellent!

Catsuit, I LOVE your entry! It inspired me to make an American theme. (me being American and all, hehehe)

I have Microsoft Picture It! and I made one, but it's just... BLAH... I feel I lack talent! (and lots of it) I was wondering if anyone could lend me a suggestion or 2.... or 20.... lol, I dunno, I spent a lot of time on it but it seems so cookie cutter to me and I can't figure out to change the color of Lara's outfit without changing her skin color... but I did manage to give her a french manicure! And I gave her green eyes using good ol' Paint and her hair is darker... Just lemme know what you think!

Pinkangel, your entry is wonderful, and I am tickled that mine inspired you to make it. :D

On a technical note, I have never used the program you are using, so I don't know how to help you with that, but you did marvelous, regardless. :) I think this page (http://graphicssoft.about.com/od/pictureittutorials/Picture_It_Tips_Tutorials.htm) may help but you'd have to decide. :)

When I started photo-manipulation, I used Paint exclusively, and then my brother gave me another program, when he saw I are serious cat. ;) But given patience (and persistence. ;) ), you can make almost any tool work with you to create wonders.

Your picture is lovely, and it really says The United States Of America loves Lara, all over it. :)

pinkangel07
27th Jan 2007, 17:22
thank you for your advice! yeah, the Microsoft Picture It! came wit my Dell Windows Xp, and my sister started to use it with our scanned photos to manipulate the picture. I've figured out how to create illusions, but it's still very difficult to make it look like an actual screen shot/render.

I still have some mistakes in there... like, under Lara's right elbow you can see where I had to re-crop because you could still see the white background... and her right wrist looks funny because i had to use the smudge tool to recreate where I cropped off her arm! And you can see the light blue background around the bald eagle... I think I'm going to update it a little, make it less sloppy.

Cat, you gave me an inspiration. As I was describing your entry in my post, I was wondering what other symbols of Canada there were and where one might find them. Then I had a great idea, so I put something together.

Before I unveil my collage of pixels, let me put forth my disclaimer. I am no graphic artist, as you shall see. I thought of a neat backdrop, a subtle way to show symbols that represent a country and Lara not so front-and-centre, something you (or Lara) might find in a tomb. Unfortunately, I can't impliment my idea properly. I don't even think it qualifies as an entry, but was just an experiment. It was interesting enough for me to put in the effort to try.

And so, without further adieu, TADA...

There is naturally more detail in the hi-res image.

Ruum, your idea is amazingly cool. :D The set up is wonderful! :D Lara looks great as a coin, and I think that should be added to the Super Duper Collector's Anniversary Game Edition. She looks as if she's stamped in pewter. :)

If I had done it, I would have played with the contrast to try and get more sparkle on her, and I would have tried to stamp her in gold, as a reference to Midas in the game :D hehehe! But as she is, the pewter is nicely contrasted by the bed of shiny she is laying on. Good job!

Very cool idea. :D And I think it is an entry. ;)

PS: Thanks for showing me those coins. ;D I miss those critters in my pocket. And I had never seen the ribbon one before, it's very pretty.

sorry, i made a new name, tombraiderkatie... should i keep pinkangel07?

lol, and i have 2 accounts on this one... but these forums are very touchy for me... i had problems becoming a registered user for the first one... then i forgot my password and when i requested an e-mail for it it never came :(

so i just made a new one! pinkangel07... my old one was katie07... my lucky # is 7.... so some of you may recall me from way back when in the summer!

for the united colors of lara, i also had an idea, but it kinda... didn't work. I wanted to put lara's face as Miss American Tara Conner, but, I don't care for Tara (google her once... nothing bad, I promise, just scandal) and I don't think she stands for America. So then I was going to just put the little sashe or whatever that says Miss America on her, but then I was like, 'well... that's boring!' I think I'm going to just keep practicing for now, until I get some skill at it.

What program does everyone else use? I think my Picture It! is more exclusively for actual pictures... oops... hey, the render is basically a picture! it's picture quality, for sure.

Thanks, Cat. Yes, you're just an inspiring person. No doubt someone talented like you could have produced something more refined (I'm not being sarcastic), but you get the idea of what I was thinking. Gold is a great idea, I should have thought of that, but I was concentrating on incorporating Lara any way I could. I'm glad you can at least make out the animals on the coins.

The ribbon coin was minted for breast cancer awareness. Before that, Canada's first coloured coin was a poppy quarter to commemorate the war veterans. I would have used one in my picture, but I didn't have one.

Hi pinkangel07, I used the same program as you, you are correct that it is very limited in its abilities. I've found a useful trick though, I inserted just a normal Australian flag picture, rotated it slightly, made sure it was infront of Lara (select "format" then select "move forward or backward" if necessary) select the flag picture and then under "Effects" select "transparency" then select "even" and then adjust accordingly. It doesn't look as good as the other programs but you can get away with doing it that way ;)

People, I'm Russian, so please don't laugh at my strange English.

I want to say that United Colours of Lara Croft is a really good idea, but when I started to look for Russian variant... After Serbian one I was ready to scream! (But finally I found it!)

But when the first shock disappeared, I thought that lady Croft can unite countries! Just look at them! Ukraine, Finland, Croatia, Turkey.... Tibet.....

Isn't cool?

Yes, I was going to do a few countries, so I had a number of flag designs & outfits on my image, but accidentally put the wrong flag with the country I chose in the end because their flags are so similar. This came to my attention & I corrected it shortly after. Maybe I should finish the Serbia one & post it also now.
