For some reason my sky textures are very ugly. Like I have them running in 8 bit mode. I unchecked the thing in my user.cfg
I was hoping that would have helped, even thou it is my video card.

;Some video cards may not work properly with Thief 2
;including the intel 810 and the nVidia RIVA 128.
;To fix, remove the semicolon from the next line.
safe_texture_manager

This is what my system has.

AMD Athlon 64 3200+
1.0 GB ram
NVIDIA GeForce 6600 PCI Express X16 256 MB
XP Pro w/ SP2
DirectX 9

Any ideas would be great.
Thanks

This is a well known problem with recent (last 2-3 years) Nvidia drivers and cards, which require the recent drivers. You will also find that all dark textures, e.g., in a dark room, suffer the same problem. There is nothing that can be done about it other than to buy an ATI card, which I am about to do. Please note, though, that an ATI card will not work properly on most widescreen monitors. The scaling will stretch and not be 4:3.

Yes, but then with ATI cards you get bad fog, so it's a trade-off. I personally prefer bad sky and good fog, so I'm with Nvidia.

Komag,

A fix to the fog problem has been posted in the TTLG FAQ. It involves some video card settings accessable through a tweak utility but not through the driver. Have you tried that?

Yes, I know that "fix", it allows fog of a sort to exist, but it's really REALLY crappy, and worse than no fog to me.

Here are a few pics:

Proper fog (NVidia style)

The difference is that the ATI fog is a solid wall of fog that suddenly starts very thick at a certain distance, with no fog at all nearby the player. It's even worse in motion than in the screenies.

The proper fog is a nice gradual thickening from the player outward, as natural fog would be.

The bad fog is awful and jarring to me, and I'd rather not have fog at all than put up with it, but I really like fog and I look at it a lot more than I look at the sky. Other people feel the other way around, so to each his own.

Eewww! :( That really is crappy fog! Thank you so much, Komag, for showing it to us. I think I may change my mind, then, and stick with Nvidia. The problem with that is, Nvidia could be a dead end. Nvidia driver series 9xxx are reported not to work with T1 and T2. Eventually, there could be no choice but to keep an old computer around just for playing Thief.

Or is there an answer to that Nvidia issue?
