But how can we tell if its new, but old, old but not seen before? Personally l find this one intriguing, what level was this one supposed to be?

I think that level is either Rainforest(wich Eidos removed from the game) either Peru.

Sorry for my spelling, english not a native language:)

Did you play the rainforest level?????No,so you don't know actualy if the underwater from that level had grecian style statues.:rasp:

The rain forest level was set in South America which is why it was deleted, we already had Peru and Bolivia in South America, Grecian style is native to parts of Europe, not South America. When last l looked Incan or Mayan architecture or art looked nothing like grecian

It reminds me of one of the earliest media footage, a magazine had this map for the 'underwater level', I always considered it to be the England level, but I might be wrong, since I never got to see that scan later again.

Yup. The map still looks like England to me, however.

Yes, just look at the door in the second screenshot. It's the same kind of door as in the England level.

Perhaps it was an early version of the flooded catacombs under the museum? It is a bit hard to tell because the pics are so small but it does look like England. Perhaps we should throw an extra background in, keep the thrread on topic :)

I bet this one is from the river area in the level from the very first Tomb Raider Legend trailer. ;)

l missed all the early trailers and have still not looked at them all, it has been puzzling me though, l thought it could be the begining of Bolivia, or perhaps it was the rainforest level.

And here is a somewhat larger version of concept art done for the underwater halls, l am still looking for the other one used in the article

Oh, wow... This concept art is beautiful! Too bad these places never made it in the final game. :( It's such a shame how short Legend was. It had amazing potential to be one hell of a great game.

P.S. Is that Kurtis? Sure looks like him...

I really like the Japan from the concept art. If those had made it into the actual game, Japan would have been beautiful. The concept art for it was fantastic, but the level actually turned out kinda drab (though it's still one of the ones I replay most).

At the end of Legend, a related sequel was strongly suggested. Maybe they could turn those concept art pieces for Japan into real places in a level - they could use that Japanese university that Lara mentioned several times. I think it'd be easily doable. I mean, I'm sure there's still useful and related information to be gathered from that place, so she could definitely return to it ;) Such as where and how they came across the fragment, and what else was in the area, etc.

Yeah, a Japan street level would've been great to play in IMO too. The entire Japan level in the game felt too short to me.

I expect we'll see a rainforest level in TR8. I mean, it's such a classic setting for a TR level, and since they already worked on one for Legend, it would be a shame to let it go to waste.

I agree - a Japan street level would've been great (imho, at least). Specially from looking at that art... *swoon*

But seeing as a lot of people disliked the urban levels in Aod (especially reviewers of the game, some of whom condemned them as being very un-Tomb Raider - even CD themselves said they had identified the Paris levels as 'maybe a mistake'), CD might have been very cautious about that.

Also, the emphasis was taking Lara back to the tombs in this game, and as CD were making a big deal about that then it would be a little odd for them to have inserted such a level, when that was one thing Aod had been criticised for and Legend seemed to be partly about making up for Aod's mistakes.

That's just one theory, and could well be complete nonsense :) But I would love to see an 'urban' level, and perhaps the reason people disliked the Paris levels in Aod was because they were unfinished and not particularly 'exciting' (no actual enemies in the main Paris area, and the gameplay has stuck in my mind as going round talking to people).

Oh well. Fantastic artwork, and a rainforest level sounds fantastic :D I can't wait! I would also love to see longer and vaster levels in the next TR :)

For the very reasons you mentioned, StarChampagne, I'm kind of glad we didn't get the Japan street level. Urban street levels never appeal much to me. Remember how bad Venice was in TR2? And Rome wasn't so great in Chronicles. The only street level that I thought was pretty good was in Last Revelation, and that's because the city felt very spooky, so even though it was a city, it still felt like a proper TR experience.
