View Full Version : Frequent, short freezes on GeForce FX 5200

I recently bought and installed Lego: Star Wars. During installation,
I received a Visual C++ assertion in DetectGPU.exe; I chose to ingore the
assertions, and the installation completed "successfully."

I can get through the intros and menus and start a new game without any problems, but as soon as the actual game starts, I can't play for more than a few seconds without the game freezing. The video will freeze for a bit, but the music will keep playing. After a while the music will stutter and the game will unfreeze. This behavior will continue forever-- sometimes the freezes are short (a few seconds), sometimes they are longer (a minute). Sometimes I can play between freezes for around a minute, sometimes only for a few seconds. Once I noticed the problem, I updated my BIOS, chipset drivers, sound drivers, and video drivers (nVidia GeForce FX 5200). None of those updates had any positive effect on the problem. Also, I defragged my hard drive, and cleaned out the case (to make sure the box was cool enough.)

What else can I try? Is there some other kind of diagnosis I can perform?

Here is my DxDiag info:

Asside from the error messages on instal (mine was clean), the "hangs" you describe are exactly what I am getting on my Dell Dimension 3000 with Geforce FX 5500.

Funny thing is that I USE TO be able to run the game until about 2-3 months ago. Thats when the hangs started. It was near the time I installed Norton Systemworks 2006, but I don't know if its related. I can disabled everything via msconfig and still have the issue. My current theory is a Windows update messed it up, but I have nothing solid on that yet.

did you ever get this figured out?
