View Full Version : Running TRL just hangs my PC

Yep.. Title says it all.

I have an AMD XP3000+ CPU
I have a 7800 GS OC GFX card
I have uninstalled the old nVidia drivers.
I have installed the latest nVidia drivers (even tried the beta drivers).
I have 1.5 GB RAM
I have lots of free drive space on my computer
I have rebooted countless times
I have uninstalled and reinstalled and uninstalled and reinstalled
I have defragged between uninstalls and reinstalls
I have my anti-virus disabled for all installs (including nVidia drivers)

So that all should work, right? Nope... I launch the game and the wait cursor comes up, then goes away, and my PC is not longer responsive... at all. No CTRL-ALT-DELETE, no nothing. I've launched the game with the task manager up, saw the process start, no CPU utilization for the program at all, and then it just hangs. So I tried to kill it in the task manager and what happens? It won't die. And I'm force to hard boot my PC yet again.

I'm open for any advise, but frankly, I'm just speechless. It's rediculous.

Do you close your background task in TM (except explorer & taskmgr)? Try disabiling your antivirus software while playing. Sometimes other programs that are running can interrupt gameplay.

Unfortunately I've tried that. No go. I'm still waiting for Eidos CS to get past the normal "did you do this? how about try this?". Maybe they'll come up with a solution eventually.

AWESOME! I finally heard back from Eidos CS...

GREAT NEWS!!!!

They said "wow, that does sound like a doozie of a problem... how about you send it back and we'll send you the same game, but on a different platform"

SUCK MY LEFT ONE, EIDOS! You have definitely lost a customer. That is the absolute WORST response I think I've ever heard from any customer service department.

And if you don't think I'm being serious about what they said, well here's their official response...

(fyi, Eidos, this installs and runs on my old PC with all old school technology... this is your software problem interfacing with new hardware... FIX IT)

Greetings -----,

Thank you for your message. Very odd issue indeed. We have not had any other users reporting this particular issue. Have you tried swapping the disk out for another copy? It's possible the disk has corrupted information on it, which is causing the crash. If the store you purchased the game at won't accept your copy of the game for a return, we can exhange it for another copy, or the same game on either PS2, Xbox, or Xbox 360.

LOLROF!!!

That's a great one man, haven't laughed so hard in a long time..."Suck my left one"...:D

But seriously, what sound card do you have? Is it MAya 7.1 or nVidia nForce? If you bought the game recently, I suggest (and don't get angry) that you take it back to the store of purchase for a new one. That way you can prove it's the game and not your system at fault.

Your Video Card looks OK BTW.

I've tried both the nVidia (which is onboard audio) and the Maya sound card. Doesn't seem to make a difference either way.

On a side note, don't ever buy the Audiotrak line of audio cards. Not all that great.

I will see if the store will exchange the CD and give it a run although, since it installs on another machine, I'm guessing it's the code and not the disc. The other machine I have is old and running a 5400 GFX, and the game sucks badly on that hardware. I refuse to play it on lesser hardware so hopefully contacting the main Eidos office tomorrow will result in a complete refund.

Small question...did you disable either the nForce or the Maya BEFORE playing the game. I didn't know that nForce was ONBOARD!

Try to disable one of them first, starting with the Maya card. Is that card new? Maybe you can get a Creative Audigy card, they're cheap but reliable.

Reading comprehension is not one of your better skills, I assume?

I'll translate it for you: "How about you send it back and we'll send you the same game for the same platform, or for a different platform if you want."

Care to explain again how that is bad customer support?

Unfortunately, I'm not rich, and I don't have another platform, so no.. I don't with them to do that. And the CD installs just fine on another computer (if you'd bother to read it, you'd see that part) so it's not the CD... So no, I don't want them to send me another damn disk. What I want, is for them to acknowledge that there exists a problem that they'll work on. I don't expect them to solve just my problem, but I expect them to say that there is a problem and they'll look into it more.

Am I asking too much? Am I?

How would you feel if your bank called you and said "Oops, we're sorry but there was a glitch in our system and $50 is missing from your account. We realize this most inconvenient for you; however, you are the only one it happened to so... We're sorry but that's just the way your cookie crumbled!"

You can't seriously claim that you'd be ok with that. This is the same situation, it's just not my bank.

Totally agree. BTDT just like you. Like you my system is good modern components with all new drivers, properly installed software, etc. I cannot tolerate an application this buggy. I may return the TRL game.

I just got my TRL today, and I had same problem....tried install and reinstall many times. I thought I got a defective disk. Then I tried to remove my Alcohol 120% and it worked. I assume it's image drive's problem?

I see that you have Nero ImageDrive, have you tried remove that?

Virtual, do you think it's one of those "we won't sell games to people who have CD piracy applications on their harddrives" gimmicks like Doom3 had?

SecuRom definitely does things like that.

I would say that when the game doesn't even get to the point that it switches resolution and starts running fullscreen, you are running into a security related problem. SecuRom support may also be able to assist with that.

Nope.

The game plays fine from DVD even though I've got 4 virtual image drives on my machine...

'Tis true that Securom checks for virtual drives, like Daemon Tools and similar. This is, of course, stupid, since said software is not illegal, nor is it used only for "illegal" piracy. And the people with an illegal copy of the game can easily avoid the Securom anyway, so all it does is to make a problem for the cusomers that own a legal copy.

I personally don't have a lot of technical problems with Securom (though, I have a lot of principle problems with it), but I am playing a lot of ToCA Race Driver 3, which uses Starforce copy protection, and that is the worst of them all. Luckily, after numerous complaints, some companies have stopped using them, realising it was a mistake.

The fact is that "CDs" and "DVDs" with these copy protection do not conform to the standards that define these types of discs. As such they can be seen as "fake-CDs" and "fake-DVDs" since they don't follow the standard.

I think they just want to prevent piracy. But as Nightmist said, it does not help...

Alright i got trl today after all the excitment building up,and when i went to play it even in the first part of the game.It did run fine but all of a sudden i got this high whining noise and the screen freezes.I got all updated drivers to my motherboard and ati card.

1)I am using the ATI X700 pro 256 megs with a core clock of 455 megahertz.
2)I got a creative labs sound blaster xfi extreme music card.
3)Amd athlon 64 3000+
4)1.5 gigs of ram

Now heres a good one,i also have oblivion which to say has some of the highest and best graphics i have seen in ages. And it ran absolutely crystal clear picture and sound. But why now when i got TRL it crashes and freezes?
I played every tomb raider out there with no hitch at all.But for some reason this one crashes at different times?,like i said i didnt even get to go past first stage of start.I have my motherboard drivers updated, ati updated, creative updated and all my windows updates. But to no effect,i even turned off the hardware acceleration just to see what would happen but it still crashes.Someone mentioned about the game running on only nvida drivers and i agree,it seems that the game company veered to nvidia more than ati,i have used ati with absolute faith and i find ati the best cards to use for refresh rates and picture quality. As for nvidia, the driver compatibility issues could be there in the game itself. When a person installs TRL the game engine works best on nvidia cards rather than ati.So most likely it is an issue problem.A person using ati rather than nvidia will get problems but there are the ones who use nvidia getting thier fare share too.But more to sound glitches than anything else.As for the patch i dont think it would make a whole lot of difference. This game is too big and that also could be the problem as well, they needed the space for the game engine but to me its a waste of time. And i mean as in size for such a short game.Oblivion is only under 5 gigs but has the most realistic scenery i have ever seen, and the people look more real than lara does.So i think this game was over hyped too much, and too much issue problems to be accounted for.So i think when they get some good patches out there for ati as well as nvidia, all your going to see is a lot more crashing.TRL in my vote so far is 6 out of 10 stars.Great graphics and all,but too many app problems towards video cards which makes the CPU overheat too quickly to keep up.

No kidding. I didn't see any problem with that response from Eidos.
