i have played 3 tomb raider games and fell in love with it the first time I layed eyes on it. But there is one thing that i HATE about it IS THE WATER MISSIONS AND THE GOD DAMN SHARKS. I am so scaried of sharks that i hardly evr go in the ocean and am afraid to go in my pool alone. And i hate the water missions in the game because they are so difficult and always have sharks. So what i guess what i am trying to say is to NOT PUT SHARKS IN TOMB RAIDER LEGEND please i beg of you do not put my worst fear in this game. Please!!!! If there are sharks in the game the chance of me buying it are very low and i know that tons of people hate sharks and may want to buy this game. So please please please do not put sharks in the game. Also are there any tomb raider games that dont have sharks nor water missions?thanks and eidos please dont put sharks in the game.

I never much cared for the underwater sequences either-- they're often too disorienting and tedious. And I really hated having to fight underwater. The harpoon guns were always too slow, the controls felt awkward, and shooting things underwater really just isn't all that satisfying. Whenever possible, I'd try to kill the sharks or whatever from outside the water and then dive in.

So, yeah, I agree with you-- No prolonged underwater sequences in TRL!!!

Sharks are some my favorite creatures! They will not hurt nobody.
When there's been Sherk attacks it's usually mistaken identity. True there has been a few istances where sharks did attack a human for apparently no reason but these instances are far and few in between.
When I first saw Jaws it scared me and it freaked me out so bad I had a hard time taking a bath...it's down right hilarious thinking back on it now but read some books, watch some documentaries because it's easy to fear something if you know nothing about it!

Matt, be very frank with me, I'm not a shark and I don't bite. Answer my question TRUTHFULLY:-

How old are you? (If I may ask)

I LOVE those underwater stuff. Fascinating really, and I would like to have them in the next game. Talking of sharks, I liked killing them too. I was NOT scared.

I told you that I don't bite!

And I'm not gonna treat you differently, even if I am 14 years older than you.

Kids ahem, sorry teenagers of your age are scared of these kinda stuff. Don't worry, it'll pass. Believe me, when you'll grow up and think that once you were scared of sharks, you'll fall down laughing. I'm not offending you, or anything; I just hope you get my point.

I love water and swimming in Tomb Raider! I am so glad that I saw Lara swimming in gameplay video. Also screenshots of waterfall and video of Lara jumping to the water is beautiful. I think that one of the signs of great graphics is water and character interaction with water, all the developers should pay more attention to it. Do you remember how beautiful water is in Far Cry, it can also be great to see some friendly fishes and dolphins. I hope that Lara will have some nice swimming moves and will explore underwater tombs. I wish there will be boat or some other water vehicle, maybe waverunner. And also cute wetsuit or bikini.

i dont think that there are going to be any sharks because i read somewhere that they wanted to make it more realistic and make more human enemys than others.so i doubt sharks because what kind of realistic shark would just swim up to lara and bit her hello that is not realistic.and also in the water mission level i dont see lara having a harpon gun or anything like that and she is not even wearing any diveing stuff which may mean........................NO SHARKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Also are there any tomb raider games that dont have a sharks in them if so name which ones

TR1 has no underwater enemies, if I remember correctly.
TR2 has sharks, "frogmen" and something else I think.
TR3 has alligators, "frogmen" and pirhanas.
TR4 has hammerhead sharks in ONE level (from memory) and little fishes and alligators and such.
TR5 has nothing I think. Wait, it has underwater flare shooting people, doesn't it?
And AOD has nothing. Except spikes. But they don't count :)

Hope that helps you Matt! :D

In AOD, you have mutant fishes! They, are sort of brownish colour (from my memory) and they once ate up Lara :D .

But only ONCE!

Otherwise, they just hung around and pushed Lara about.

If you can find them cheap, buy them all :D I like TR3 the most. It's also the hardest, I think. If you are playing on PC, you can save anywhere, so it's not so bad. If you are playing on PlayStation, though, I believe you can only save at certain points and that would be incredibly frustrating. TR1 and TR5 are both pretty good. I like TR1 a little bit more. AOD was alright, too, but it is rather different from the other TR games, so I don't know if you'll like it or not. If you get the PC version, make sure you get the patches :)

TR1 has alligators in Egypt ;)
The first alligator shows up when you slide beneath the monastery (St. Francis Folly) somewhere around the Mediterranean sea and prior to the Egypt levels. I shot him while he was swimming and after the water was drained, he was suspended in mid-air!

You might want to try scuba diving one day (for real)

then you will see the sharks and see that they just leave you alone
I never go scuba diving without taking either a speargun or a knife, because like you I have this fear of being alone and helpless against some attacking animal in the water and I know that if something approached me I could defend myself

but the truth is they just see you and leave you alone. Most of them are nurse sharks anyway

Also, I read somewhere that last year a total of 7 people worldwide were killed by sharks. That is compared to about 1,000,000 deaths worldwide from car accidents in 2004, caused by drunk driving, people reading while driving, working on laptops while driving, not paying attention, etc. So you should be scared when you are in a car, not in the water!! ;)

This is why I never dive without a knife and/or speargun -- at least you will die bravely defending yourself as your blood dripping innards spill out into the ocean ... no! wait! we are supposed to be encouraging Matt

That wouldn't happen. An attacking shark will usually come up from behind to surprise you, so most likely you would be bit on the leg. In this case, you use your dive knife to stab the shark in the eye and it will let go. How do I know this? Well, I don't think any animal would keep eating after losing an eye. I will admit I have never personally tried this method

This is hilarious in so many ways!! What if the shark thinks it's going to die after you stab it in the eye so he continues to nibble on your leg to get one last meal in?
If it does let go of your leg then you have a nice little blood trail for other sea predators to follow.
I fail to see how this is helping the boy...

If you are in the water and start to feel scared, or you feel a sensation like something just brushed past you, or you feel like you have gone out too far and can't touch the bottom anymore, just start singing "Under the Sea" to yourself from the Little Mermaid and you will feel better :D

I've seen that picture at snopes.com-site that debunks urban myths. Yes, it was doctored, but very cleverly. In fact it was an amalgam of 2 separate pictures, one of a shark leaping out of the water, one of a man climbing up a ladder into the helicopter.

Perhaps it was removed cause the mods thought Matt would die of a heart attack if he saw it?

The only known method is hitting them in the snout!
Special scales go over their eyes to protect them from eye injury when they go after their prey so stabbing them in the eye would probabley be pointless!

Ok, so we can all agree that the water levels in TR are no walk in the park. Especially ones with sharks in them but Matt, If you're afraid of sharks all the more reason you should love TR games with sharks in them. Cause it gives you the chance to blow the sharks away.

I find it quite therapeutic after watching shark horror movies, then I go back to play TR 2 and kill'em while saying take that Jaws! Oh, you want so of this too? BANG, BANG, BANG.

Not that I hate sharks, but lets face it if any of us were being attacked by sharks we'd probably die not of the sharks bite but of fear.

Still I'd rather have more sharks than that Damn Leviathan in AOD. I emptied all my ammo shooting it! Heck I even tried feeding it and it still came after me. I died like a million times before I got passed him.

:p

Then sing whilst dying "Bring me to life". I bet every one knows that! :D

But the thing is to overcome your fear, Matt and Blue, you too. Hey, really, it's easy; but let me speak your tongue(s).

As far as I'm concerned, humans can be scared of many things, and later laugh when they grow up. It is 100% natural, and you shouldn't feel out of the world and alieny (that is if you do). Everyone has his or her own faults, but one shouldn't try to accept them, I don't think so. We should try to improve them, so that the other couldn't even guess it's there.

Determination can bring one anything , but I lay special emphasis on determination and not overconfidence. Open up a TR game, a level with the shark. Relax, no popped open eyes or arched brows; and no quivering lips and trembling hands. Take a deep slow breath and metally prepare yourself, you can beat it. The good thing about games is that the characters aren't real. I believe that it is our love for Lara that we consider her real. Holster a harpoon gun or if you don't have it, lure it out to a platform and then kill it. Do it once, twice, thrice, force yourself to do it. Practise it, and eventually, you will come over your fear.

This thread has become a very long running joke. Sorry, but I just cannot believe that anybody is genuinely scared of a blocky, pixelated shark in a game. In real life, yes, fine, I could understand. I wouldn't want to come face to face with a shark either. But in a game with primitive graphics (by today's standards)? Nah, sorry, I really don't believe it. I think Matt was just seeing what our reactions would be. Still, it made for an entertaining thread.

I hated the underwater bits mainly because they were tedious, and that stupid harpoon gun thing was far too slow to be exciting. So I'm hoping Legend doesn't have any prolonged underwater sequences.

I think that if they do have underwater sequences in Legend, they will do it right. I've always wanted Lara to have some real scuba gear with an air tank. I know she technically had something like that in Chronicles on the German sub, but it broke before I got to have any real fun with it. Anyhow, hopefully something like that will appear in Legend if there are any prolonged underwater sequences:) And I completely agree that the harpoon gun was too slow and clumsy to be any fun.

 The big cats in Unfinished Business are the scariest, but in a good way. Those things just jump out of nowhere :D .
Just like real ones. :) :D

Well the idea, I think, is that they (sharks) are SUPPOSED to scare you, even just a little bit, and hopefully a whole lot ! !

However it would certainly help if there was a way to take care of them. Those spear-guns were almost useless, and really the only effective way to deal with Mr. Shark was to climb out of the water somewhere and shoot him with pistols or a rocket or something.

There is a weapon in use by people who actually HUNT sharks that consists of a stick with a very short gun on the end of it. You load it with a 12-gauge shell, and when Mr. Shark comes around you put the stick with the business end on his head and he loses his mind, because his head explodes.

So there is a way to really get sharks and turn them into steaks for the barbie, but you won't find it in any Tomb Raider.

Unless, of course, the next underwater level allows Lara the use of a Sharkstick . . . . (Hint, Hint) :)

Well, I don't know why games scare me and other people so much... but it isn't about the graphics being clunky. It's because you care about Lara, and you are focussing on a screen, what happens to Lara happens to you. I always panic with sharks and things, as it is a natural instinct to seek higher ground... call me pathetic, but it just seems less of a game and more of a fight for survival. Also, Doom 3 is pretty freaky, but I have got halfway :D Which is something. Roll out the sharks :D :D !!

It's a bit much to ask that they exclude something due to one persons fear do you not consider?

Imagine the industry should this nightmare become reality - Tomb Raider Seven - Lara's quest for a nice cup of tea and a biccie as she can't go outside much what with being agrophobic, featuring Kurtis putting the kettle on as she can't fill it up herself as she's a bit on the hydrophobic side too...

I personally don't cope with heights very well but I cannot think of a single occaision where I have ever felt anxiety during my twenty-five years of game playing although I did once know a fellow who actually got motion sickness from certain FPS oddly enough...

If it's too hot in the games kitchen for you then may I suggest that you try your hand on 'Winnie the poohs magical honey pot adventure'? My nieces love it as luckily they don't have a phobias of bears or honey...

I finally convinced my brother to give TR1 a try. He was going along fine until, out of nowhere, he got sideswiped by that bear. He nearly had a heart attack, then we both broke out laughing, then he said he was never playing that game again  Ah, that was hilarious.
