Its nearly 200 years since the battle of Trafalgar so the papers are full of interesting things and us brits like to remember beating the french since we never win the football so i'll be posting up some interesting stuff and i'm going to try hunt down some pictures (i would encourage others to do the same).

Some Facts and Figures

More than 100,000 men gathered along 75 miles of French coastline could be seen from Dover.it was the first serious threat of invasion since the Spanish Armada.
The enemy fleet of French and Spanish warships, assembled under French Admiral Villeneuve were holed up in the Spanish port of Cadiz.
Nelson waited until on October 19 Villenueve left Cadiz with his 33 ships to face the Royal Navy's 27 ships off Cape Trafalgar.
Nelson's Fleet completely outclassed the enemy,18 enemy ships were captured or destroyed and only 11 made it back to Cadiz.
Nelson died knowing he had won a great victory

10 facts about the battle
The youngest sailor to fight at Trafalgar was just eight years old

The oldest was 68

A woman called Jane Townsend was on bored one of the ships and was put forward for a medal for "useful services"

Artic explorer John Franklin fought at Trafalgar

Nelson originally wanted "England confides everyman to do his duty" displayed from his mast, but his signal Lietenant John Pascoe said it would be easier to spell "expects"

John Pollard is famed as "the man who shot the man who shot Nelson".

One sixth of the Royal Navy's entire force of 110,000 men fought in the battle.

Nearly 4,000 of the crew had never been to sea

There were 3,500 Irishmen fighting for british forces at Trafalgar

There were records of Chinese,Afican and Americans fighting on british ships

Interesting fact:

Those Americans were forcefully impressed into the British Navy, and is one of the principle reasons for the British-American War of 1812.

Yes most of the crews were "pressganged" into joining the Royal Navy It was common for boys as young as 10 to join the fleet and be professional sailors by 16 if they survived of course disease and beatings were also a way of life.

lol..

What I meant by the above is that the British were sailing to America (This is after the revolution, mind you), finding American ships, and basically kidnapping the sailors to go fight in the Napoleonic Wars. This was the main cause cited for the declaration of war by the USA against Britain in 1812.

And i also found this post here (http://www.totaltwaddle.co.uk/board/index.php?topic=11652.msg160017) while searching

"Order the signal, Hardy."
"Aye,aye,sir."
"Hold on, that's not what I dictated to the signal officer. What's the meaning of this?"
"Sorry, sir?"
"England expects every person to do his duty, regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, religious persuasion or disability. What gobbledygook is this?"
"Admiralty policy, 1'm afraid, sir. We're an equal opportunities employer now. We had the devil's own job getting England past the censors, lest it be considered racist."
"Gadzooks, Hardy. Hand me my pipe and tobacco."
"Sorry sir. All naval vessels have been designated smoke-free working environments."
"In that case, break open the rum ration. Let us splice the mainbrace to steel the men before battle."
"The rum ration has been abolished, Admiral. It's part of the Government's policy on binge drinking"
"Good heavens, Hardy. I suppose we'd better get on with it. Full speed ahead."
"I think you'll find that there's a 4 knot speed limit in this stretch of water."
"Damn it man! We are on the eve of the greatest sea battle in history. We must advance with all dispatch. Report from the crow's nest, please."
"That won't be possible, sir."
"What?"
"Health and Safety have closed the crow's nest, sir. No harness. And they said that rope ladder doesn't meet regulations. They won't let anyone up there until a proper scaffolding can be erected."
"Then get me the ship's carpenter without delay, Hardy"
"He's busy knocking up a wheelchair access to the fo'c'sle, Admiral,"
"Wheelchair access? I've never heard anything so absurd."
"Health and Safety again, sir. We have to provide a barrier-free environment for the differently abled."
"Differently abled? I've only one arm and one eye and 1 refuse even to hear mention of the word. I didn't rise to the rank of admiral by playing the disability card."
"Actually, sir, you did. The Royal Navy is under-represented in the areas of visual impairment and limb deficiency."
"Whatever next? Give me full sail. The salt spray beckons."
"A couple of problems there too, sir. Health and Safety won't let the crew up the rigging without crash helmets.
And they don't want anyone breathing in too much salt haven't you seen the adverts?"
"I've never heard such infancy. Break out the cannon and tell the men to stand by to engage the enemy."
"The men are a bit worried about shooting at anyone, Admiral."
"What? This is mutiny!”
"It's not that, sir. It's just that they're afraid of being charged with murder if they actually kill anyone. There's a couple of legal aid lawyers on board, watching everyone like hawks."
"Then how are we to sink the Frenchies and the Spanish?"
"Actually, sir, we're not."
"We're not?"
“No, sir. The Frenchies and the Spanish are our European partners now. According to the Common Fisheries
Policy, we shouldn't even be in this stretch of water. We could get hit with a claim for compensation."
"But you must hate a Frenchman as you hate the devil."
"I wouldn't let the ship's diversity co-ordinator hear you saying that sir. You'll be up on disciplinary."
"You must consider every man an enemy who speaks ill of your King."
"Not any more, sir. We must be inclusive in this multicultural age. Now put on your Kevlar vest, it's the rules." "Don't tell me health and safety. Whatever happened to rum, sodomy and the lash?"
"As 1 explained, sir, rum is off the menu. And there's a ban on corporal punishment."
"What about sodomy?"
"I believe it's to be encouraged, sir."
"In that case, kiss me, Hardy"

LMAO

Re-Enactments? What is there to re-enact? It was ludicrously one-sided. Goddamned brits *shakes fist* The world would be a better place if Napoleon had managed to conquer britain, IMO.

I think the world would suck if France conquered Britain. I'm glad the British kicked Nappy's a**.

France would never have been able to hold onto to Britain though. The Brits wouldn't stand for a bunch of frogs running their affairs!

Well, if you ask me, the French and Spanish were asking to get the crap kicked out of them. I mean, for a people living solely on an island, having to adampt to defend their waters, it was a necesity for the Brits to exsel in sea combat.
They built the CSS Alabama in Liverpool for the CSA during the American Civil war. Literaly was unstopable with Semmes in command. In fact, the only way the union navy was able to stop them, was by trapping the ship in a bay on the coast of France. Even still, the ship had a long and victorious run capturing about 400 vessels. Gotta love it.

Lol, Napoleon beat the Brits? Your talking about one of the most resilient people to have fought and survived many, many wars.

Who burned our capital in the war of 1812? Who gave us a reason to revolt in the first place? Who's ass did we have to save in two world wars?

Heck, if you guys even began to pay off the INTEREST from the debt your country owes us from World War II, our economy would go through the roof.

Besides one burnt one's own property because one's fellow subjects of the crown revolted over three extra p on tax(plus you started a revolution PLUS you had the cheek to call the self-defence killing of five boston men who screamed at the soldiers to fire a 'massacre') besides you WON the revolution what are you complaining abotu

I thought americans knew by now they did not save our ass although actually we would all have been doomed if hitler had launched his nuclear weapons in time :( then again if it had back-fired france and all hitlers best scientists would be dead

umericans braggin about it is shyte, but uh, the Battle of the Atlantic was the crucial game winner. :p

the Battle for Britain enabled England to hold off long enough. not that it wasn't a glorious achievement or a true David vrs Goliath kind of thing. (AND one of my favorite battles)

UK and US are bros, dudes. let's act like it!! ;)

Such pure misguided ignorance. It's okay to dislike America's modern-day policies, but don't take it out on history.

Without the US you would have lost in North Africa. You would never have gotten to Italy. Japan would have overran the British positions in Asia, and D-Day would never have happened.

What would the result have been? Russia would have eventually beaten germany. Russian control of Europe would have been a very different post-war world.

So, please, keep your America bashing to the present. Don't ruin the past.

Oh, and let's not forget all that Lend-Lease equipment. Without it, Britain might not have lasted until D-Day, and Russia might not have been able to repel Germany.

Typical American forgetting that we were fighting for other peoples freedom and they were AGAIN fighting for themselves when Pearly harbour got bombed, where were you the first 3 years of the war? I remember, sitting comfortably while the nazi war machine ravaged Europe. And who asked for Britains help to Liberate Iraq? What country is helping to keep the peace around the world?

I just felt the need to say that.....As people your ok. :)

Who said anything about Altruistic? We attacked Japan because they attacked us. We attacked Germany because they declared war on us, and because we wanted to make sure the UK was around to pay us back.

That doesn't change the fact that the US was the deciding factor in the war.

Ha, so you admit you only fight for yourself or what may help you in the future, what benefit do we get from Kosovo? We jumped at the opputunity to help you in Iraq but if Japan hadnt bombed Pearly Harbour you would not have moved and watched the rest of the world ravage itself.
