I've had a good look round on various websites for anything else that could rival IG in the coming months and unless you like hex based games or truly awful retro style pixellated games there really is only one with the bizarre title of Les Grognards! While it concentrates solely on battles and battle tactics it does look very good and the armies are huge in comparison to IG. The Napoleonic mod for Medieval Total War: Viking Invasion is just as good, if not better, than IG.

I highly recomend it.

The HistWars game has really really childish graphics, and those are not even conceptual drawings :D the graphics look like from 5 years ago :confused: IG is so much better, if a few things are added to make it even better :thumbsup:

Ooooooh :eek: I think I will wait for the Nap mod of RTW by Lordz - now that is shaping up to be one hell of a mod! Just read about it in PC Gamer. Any cannon yet ??

Holy S***!!!

That's a players' game mod!?! (The Roman Legionaire gives it away)! IG battle mode looks like some 2nd graders put it together compared to that! Let's see some militia with sticks try to take on one of those lines!

Unfortunately it won't be availbale until summer, 06. They might release a multiplayer download by Christmas time! :)

But, I would rather have quality over crap any day. The longer we have to wait, the better the mod will be. ;)

I agree, the worst thing you can do is rush out an unfinished product, like they did with Cossacks 2. Consequently, it has a lot of bugs.

Anyone ever play the wargame, Horse and Musket by Shrapnel Games (http://www.shrapnelgames.com/boku/hnm/3.htm)? From the decsription, it is based around 18th century warfare. The graphics are not the level of IG's but I think this game is more geared towards tactics.

Anyone knows of Empires in Arms, the best Napoleonic-war game I have ever played? It is a notable, award-winning board game an Australian company has been developing into a game playable with computers.

The attention to detail is incredible! Great work!! The screenshots of the Hussars on thelordz forum was really something as well. You can see the superb detail of the coats of arms on their satchels.

Beautiful conversions! I know that Matrix Games is going to distribute Empire in Arms which has been in development for some time. They are also talking about some Warfare in the Age of Musketry(?) series. I would point out that Waterloo:Napoleons Last Battle and Austerlitz are really good real-time representations of these battles by Breakaway Games. They really concentrate on tactics. How about the really old games from Talonsoft? Napoleon in Russia(Borodino), Waterloo and Prelude to Waterloo(Ligny and Quatre Bras), if you can find them.

Besides working on the RTW engine and creating NTW2, the Lordz are happy to announce the American Total War package based on NTW1 for the MTW:VI engine.

The American Total War mod will be a mod for MTW. Continuing in the vein of Napoleonic Total War but shifting focus, it will feature at least two different eras in North American warfare: The American War for Independence, and the American Civil War.

Both eras will be available for Single Player Custom battles and Multiplayer. Single Player Campaign is being worked on.

The American War for Independence will feature three separate factions with very different play style. Do you wish to go to war as the fleet footed Americans, bringing your Minutemen, Green Mountain Boys, and Continentals out to ambush the enemy from behind tree and wall? Or would you rather begin the unstoppable march of the British, your lines full of British Regulars, British Grenadiers, and Hessian mercenaries? Or maybe you wish to take command of the French, landing your Marines and Grenadiers to help your American allies? AWI-TW features music from the era, rewards players who can adapt their styles to the skirmish warfare of the time, and includes some of the most beautiful maps ever created for the MTW engine, including a host of historically inspired maps for those of you who wish to recreate history. Will the colonies break the chains of servitude and form a New Nation? Or will Britain squash the upstart colonies? The choice is yours!

The American Civil War will focus on the war that pitted brother against brother, North against South, and almost tore the United States apart. The solid blue lines of the Union will march forward, with valiant troops from New Jersey, Maine, New Hampshire, and the rest of the Northern States joining some of the most famous regiments of the war, including the Iron Brigade, Irish Brigade, and others, on the field. The Confederates will be ready to meet them, a ragtag looking bunch including Texans, Virginians, and North Carolinians, as well as some of the elite of the Southern armies, including the 1st Louisiana Tiger Zouaves and the Stonewall Brigade. Featuring period battlefield music, new troop types including dismounted cavalry, and a host of historically inspired maps, American Civil War will finally allow you to reenact one of the most important and researched conflicts in history in the MTW engine.

With all new factions, troop types, music, maps, and even styles of play, the American Total War mod will continue the fine Lordz tradition of quality wargames for the avid wargamer. American Total War will most likely be available by the end of the summer at the latest.

How could you do an American Revolutionary Mod without including the Native Americans? Historically they didn't do much to a terribly great effect during the war, but that doesn't mean they couldn't have.

I am so looking forward to that! I have been waiting a while for a decent Civil War era RTS to play with. Now I can finally test out Longstreet's idea for that final day at Gettysburg and see if it would have worked.

If it will be like NTW1 then I think I'll pass (sorry). However I whish the Lordz good luck with their new project. There can never be enough Napoleonic games out there. :)

@ The Lordz

I had a question for you guys about your project. I know that when I played RTW and IG the biggest difference I noted was difference in tactics. Since I know little of Roman tactics compared with Napoleonic, it may be by design, but in RTW there seems to be a bonus to massing infantry, whereas in IG the benefit is to spread out and flank etc. So my question is are you guys modding it to where this benefit will exist? Or will the RTW engine still benefit the massed groups?

No, every aspect that is within our power and the RTW game engine and hardcoded limitations will be altered to get an as good as possible Napoleonic war game.
Just cosmetic changes would be a waist of time.

Monkey - the NTW mod is based on the RTW game code, not MTW.

Latest date for Histwar Les Grognards is "by the end of this year" but that is notcertain and it may move into early next year. No specific date has ever been given by the developers. NTW will be sometime in 2006 so Les Grognards will almost certainly be out first. I will probably end up playing both.

Napoleonic Total War 1 is a finished and available Lordz mod and based on the Medieval Total War: Viking Invasion engine.

Napoleonic Total War 2 is our new project, still work in progress and based on the Rome Total War engine.

A good Naploeonic aged game for me (well it is just before the Napolionic era) is Cossacks but now there is cossascks 2: Napoleonic wars (or something like that) I think this a good game style as it is like the Age of empires style game except you can like 50 000 men in your army not like the age of empires max of 30 to control

Just got MTW/VI in order to play NTW1...(lotta letters !)Anyway it wont be keeping me from my IG.Visually it is light years behind...might give it another few gos to check out the game play a bit more but first impressions weak...NTW2 does look good however!

The MTW NTW mod suffers for being compared visually with the far superior IG.However I would concede that the default medieval game is actually a bit of fun and there is a great piece of ancient arty called a serpentine which seems to sling a pile of 'grenades' at the enemy...

true, but the only way i can see us adding a general woulld be to replace a unit like say militia, make the total for unit at one with a high defence and attack parameters.

Anyone ever play Waterloo: Napoleons Last Battle?

It's not great graphics wise, but you can set your men in several formations. Artillery has better range, and men will retreat under pressure.

Is that the Waterloo battle for IG? becasue graphics wise, I dont know what your talking about. The only other game that might be better than IG is NTW2
mabe.IG will always have its differences, and their something that even the Lordz im sorry to say can't get. I got my copy of IG early 2006 and still nothing compares, not even RTW. Looking at IG troops closey, thier isnt a game that could compare.

One of the main things I look at is the smoke animation, the Lordz have extremely good unit detail but not so good with sprites(if that makes sence),
I wont believe otherwise until I see a close up of voley(from NTW2) that has just been fired.

Thier also are problems with IG were ther melee attacks, they all run in one big circle and fight, that really would'nt happen, they would hold ther lines until they were lacking in soldiers.
Between IG & NTW2(when it comes out) I think ill like IG. I could be rong:)
