Ion Storm Shuts Down

Deus Ex developer folded by Eidos

Today, Eidos has confirmed that it has closed the doors on developer Ion Storm, most recently responsible for Thief: Deadly Shadows and Deus Ex: Invisible War, both of which appeared on PC and Xbox.
The studio, which had shed its most notable creators, Harvey Smith and Warren Spector in 2004, was closed in a move aimed at consolidating Eidos' development teams in the U.S. Besides Deus Ex and the most recent Thief, the studio is notorious for having churned out John Romero's Daikatana, which became viewed as a colossal blunder when released for PC in 2000.

According to a statement released by Eidos, 35 employees at Ion Storm have lost their jobs; meanwhile, the company plans to add 50 additional heads to its San Francisco Bay Area-based Crystal Dynamics studio to make up for the losses. This studio is currently in charge of the Tomb Raider franchise, as well as upcoming FPS Project Snowblind.
