I have a challenge to all you taffers out there who have beaten the game so quickly, or those of you out there who have yet to beat it but find yourselves out and about exploring rather than going from point A to point B.

First, some backstory.

Back in the good ol' days (a period that our scientists tell us falls PRECISELY after the release of Thief 1 and 2) a number of us beat both games, then we beat them again, on expert, then we beat them again by our own standards. The object was simply this, ghost the entire level, to perfection.

If its closed, leave it closed, if its locked, leave it locked (you could do that in the original for all you new sons'a dogs), if its lit leave it lit. If it glitters, its yours (100% loot). No alarms, no kills, no KOs, no sightings, no one so much as hears you.

As you can probably imagine, this was a very lengthy and enjoyable (for us obsessive compulsive types anyway) process. But, eventually many of us completed this process as well (with very few exceptions, there were noted times when it was absolutly impossible to ghost past but they were few and were documented as excuseable). During this though we explored a considerable amount in our endeavor to go by unseen, and from this, a new sport was born.

Rooftop Pioneering.

The object is simple. Reach the tallest, most obscure, hard-to-get-to spot you can possibly imagine. Some place you just look and think to yourself "No one could ever get up there".

Get there, take a screenshot, and challenge others to do the same.

Now, admittedly these new-fangled climbing gloves do change the sport a bit, much like the underslung muzzle-spikes they use in the bear pits these days, but, fear not, for the true sport is still there.

Previously it had been stated that it was impossible to climb from the lower level of the clocktower back to the top because of that large vertical section, that even with peoples best attempts at using the climbing gloves it wasn't doable. Taffers, the lot of em. Just today I found myself making the trip back up for a certain something I missed on the way down. It was easy, you just need to be a bit of an artistic mantler and a persistant one.

These new fangled gloves can't hold a candle to the tried and true methods, though at times they do prove useful, so don't feel bad making use of them as long as the climb is still tricky.

And so with that I issue a challenge to all of you out there.

Extra points (with absolutly no actual value) will be awarded for the discovery of areas which are untextured, any soundless (objects, including you make no sound in them. They existed in the first two, have yet to find one myself), or any area it is quite clear the developers did NOT intend us to reach.

Be creative, be persistant, and get climbin'.

A note on submissions.
Keep the filesize as small as possible, scale the picture down in pixels and save it as a jpg before linking it here.

Argh! Geocities has pulled the plug or you taffers destroyed my bandwidth even with the files as small as they were. Very well, we need a new hosting method it seems. Any suggestions?

I like the idea. I actually made it up to a rooftop I wasn't supposed to access, and fell under the gameworld in a "gray" area, and got stuck, having to reload my last save. I didn't think to take a shot, but I'll give it another try if I can remember where it was.

Just a sample run from before, this was early in the game before I even had climbing gloves.

Hmm, a Hammer Cathedral eh? That brings back some old memories. Couple of thugs think the place is "well stocked" at that. Ok, thugs blackjacked, map stolen? Check. Time to try the front door....

Locked? Crap. Wait, is that a second floor balcony?

http://www.geocities.com/wolftronix/RoofingAttempt01_01.txt
What the, this door seems like its painted on too. Damn, oh well, I've come this far.

http://www.geocities.com/wolftronix/RoofingAttempt01_02.txt
Thats not right at all....

http://www.geocities.com/wolftronix/RoofingAttempt01_03.txt
Well, this rooftop is conquered, on to the next....

This was a relativly easy climb, especially since I was able to do it without the use of gloves and gloves aren't forbidden (since later in the game you can't get around having them to my knowledge).
Just a sample to give you an idea of what its all about.

And by the way, your submissions don't have to be (Read: Shouldn't be) step by step or it will be too easy for others to follow in your footsteps. Well taffers, lets see whatcha got.

Oh that brings back memories.

For those new to the sport, an example from the Thief 1 mission The Sword:

Hehe, I'm going to have to reinstall and get some shots of Baffords place.

Edit: Alas, my geocities bandwidth has been consumed. Anyone have some more legit picture hosting available?

New image hosting found. 15mb limit, no time limit, no listed bandwidth limit. Weeee. http://picserver.student.utwente.nl/

And as a side note, yes, this whole thing is one big trip down memory lane, but a meaningful one. Now get to climbing taffers!

Behind the Hammers Church in the Graveyard. Garret is crotched ontop of the statue. Reminds me of the Green Goblin from Spiderman crotching on his flying machine. In the bigger pic hes ontop of it and in the small boxed one hes next to it.

Not nearly as high, or as impressive, but I found untextured areas. If you come into the Docks from the Old Quarter, this is atop the building right at the corner, looking down towards the building where you find the reference to the metal whale.

Two options.

One

Hit Print Scrn (Near F12) this copies your current screen to the clipboard, hit Alt-Enter to force the game into windowed mode, load Paint. Ctrl-v. Save it. Repeat.

Two
Go download Fraps.

Way back when, I was able to get to the top of the level in Haunted Cathedral. I managed to run around the level accessing all sorts of stuff. Lots of fun.

You need:

1. 2000 cash.
2. Access to the Docks via a blue Keeper Glyph portal thing, which will appear in the South Quarter.

Buy them at the red-hand store in the Docks.

The last one was probably the hardest place to get to.

For just screenshots it is a lot better to download Grabby (http://www.game-master.net/pages/grabby.html). It's free, small, and works great.

If you want to make videos of your gameplay then get FRAPS. But you'll have to pay for it.
