Having exhausted the comic book industry for inspiration, Hollywood is now knee-deep in videogame adaptations. By John Gaudiosi

The videogame business has beaten Hollywood box-office numbers both globally and domestically for the past two years. Numbers speak volumes in Tinseltown, and videogames provide a built-in audience of fans. This year will see an unprecedented number of games on the big screen. Even the lackluster second outing of Lara Croft on the big screen hasn't nixed the possibility of a third movie down the line, according to producer Lloyd Levin. Despite domestic indifference to The Cradle of Life, international returns were more than respectable enough to ensure a final chapter in the trilogy.

The appalling low-budget horror film House of the Dead earned back its $12 million budget in the U.S. despite being hammered by the press. Director Uwe Boll will provide another affront to good taste this fall when he begins filiming the $11 million House of the Dead II: Dead Aim for an expected March 2005 release. "We have the script, and the movie's been storyboarded," Boll says. "House of the Dead II will be a huge war movie where the AMS response team has to take over a city infiltrated by zombies. It's a little like Escape from New York." We can hardly wait.

Boll is one of the busiest men in the videogames-to-movies business these days. He's already wrapped production of the $20 million Alone in the Dark movie with Christen Slater and Tara Reid. The film, which opens in October 2004, brings Atari's horror franchise to the big screen. Slater told us that he would provide the voice and likeness for the virtual Edwad Carnby in Atari's new Alone in the Dark videogame as well.
