View Full Version : Game doesn't run

3rd Dec 2003, 18:04
After installing DX:IW, when I double-click on the desktop icon, it brings me to a black screen, with an arrow+hourglass cursor in the middle of the screen, and just sits there. I can't get past it.

The demo worked with no problems, so I'm confused as to why the full game doesn't work. I went into the Default file and changed the default resolution (sometimes my computer has trouble displaying 640x480), but that didn't work. Is there anything else I can do? Is this a known problem?

My computer (which is a little below the requirements, but, like I said, the demo worked) is:

P3 1 GHz
GeForce 3 Ti200 card (latest Win98 drivers)
Soundblaster Live Value sound card
Windows 98 (regular edition)

Thanks in advance!

Okay, I figured out the problem (that was fast).

Apparently, the game didn't know it was installed.

This happened because when I installed the game, it immediately asked me if I wanted to play the game. I chose "Yes," and immediately got the "Blue Screen of Death." Because this happened so quickly, I think the game wasn't completely finished with its installation, so it refused to run.

I wanted to post this so that if anyone else runs into the same problem, check your "Add/Remove Programs" and see if Deus Ex - Invisible War is listed. If not, try reinstalling and then rebooting your computer before playing the game for the first time.

Having the same problem here... I checked add/remove, and the game is actually installed, but all i get is a black screen with a cursor. No loading screen, no menus, no game...nothing... Haven't re-installed yet...I'm hoping that will help. We'll see...

Make sure you install it to the default directory, for some reason it seems to have a problem if you change the destination directory for the game. I have no clue why?

My exact problem. However, I did find that if you press escape at each "blank screen and mouse in center" you can skip to the first loading screen. However, when the menu loads, I get a lot of pink flashyness. (With the loading screen image displayed faintly behind it.) It's very pretty, but not exactly what I was looking for in a game. ;)

Anyway, here are my specs. I only copied the first part with my graphics card because it is a bit long and detailed. (probably because I have the debug version of directx set. And no, that's not what's causing the problem . . .):

I'm having the same problem, but re-installing isn't fixing it. When DXIW is starting I get an error beep and the app freezes at black screen. If I hit Ctl-Alt-Del before hitting anything, the task bar pops up as well as the task manager and there is a message window titled "message" on the task bar that I can't view. If I hit a button like enter and then hit Ctl-Alt-Del after it freezes, the message bar reads "VIKTORIA:ERROR Exception" and then a bunch of numbers, but I still can't view the message window, just the task bar icon. Help!

I reinstalled the NON-DEBUG retail version of directx 9, and the game works perfectly. The rest of you may want to check on that. Most likely it has something to do with your directx installation . . .

I got it working, eventually, and in a custom directory no less. Took me three re-installs. Didn't do anything different on that third install...same as the first two...but it suddenly decided to work. Odd.

Hmm, I had the same problem . . . maybe I'll try reinstalling a bunch of stuff and see if that helps. :-/
