I bought a Toshiba Satellite P25-S509 laptop and transfered the FM 'Rowena's Curse' along with the saved game and Darkloader from my old laptop to this new one. So I did not reinstall Darkloader or Rowena. It all loads up fine and begins to play but then freezes up whenever I drop to the gound to where Rowena is with her sacrifice. It happens no matter where I decend from the area that I enter the room. I did do a full install of T2. Any ideas? It has Windows XP and GeForce FX Go5200.

Go to the Nvida (or your Geforce card makers) site. Get the newest Drivers for your card. Or check the Toshiba site for updates.

Many "New" systems are, in fact, months old, if not longer, and the Vcard drivers may have been rewritten.

My card is less than a year old, and there have been at least 3 updates for it since then.

The Vcard makers, are constantly updating the drivers because of problems such as you describe.

Try a less Video intensive mission and see if it runs smoothly. If it does, then you have one of two problems (most likely) Your "copy" of Rowena, or the save got corrupted, or the drivers can't handle the game.

First back up in ROWENA's to an earlier save, and play back to where you are having the problem. If you have the same problem, then it is most likely the card.

If not, then it is Rowena, or the Save from which you are trying to start.

Thief saves, do foul themselves up sometimes. A restart from an earlier save usually "fixes" this problem.

Good luck.

And get new Wellingtons, for use in your not concreted stable. :D

Thanks tBM. I tried this that you posted for Hawklette awhile back: "If you get it installed and it won't run, you can try COMPATIBILITY MODE (right click PROPERTIES) and set it for 2000 this works for some people. "

It seems to work and Rowena blew me away just fine. Now back to Rowena!

P.S. thanks for telling me about this FM. It is so very good.
:D

Well I spoke too soon. It worked for awhile though. I was able to dispatch Rowena then while carrying Isabella up the ramps, it froze on me again. I downloaded the drivers like you said but it seemed to freeze up worse. Any more ideas? The reason I got this blasted machine was to play Thief FM's.

I ended up finishing Rowena's Curse on the old laptop. Never did find all the loot but I got Isabella out the front gate so I think I am done. ANYHOW.....T2 still freezes up on this new machine even after I installed the new drivers. Do you think I should uninstall/reinstall everything to include Darkloader?

I would start with Windows Update and get all Windows updates first.

Many times the sound drivers are the culprit and this laptop uses the Realtek ALC202 codec chip. If not the sound drivers, then it may be DirectX. If neither the sound drivers or DirectX is updated via Windows Update then you should update them manually.

I installed these two updates from the Windows update site and now Thievery UT graphics look terrible and T2 will not run at all. What can I do? The dls are: DirectX 0.0b End-User Runtime and NVIDIA display software update released on Sept. 26, 03. I used this site: http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

Even the graphics on Splinter cell look poor. What can I do?:(

Download and install the latest Nvidia display drivers here (http://nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp), but carefully follow the upgrade instructions here (http://www.nvidia.com/object/driver_installation_hints.html).

If you still have problems reinstall DirectX (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=141D5F9E-07C1-462A-BAEF-5EAB5C851CF5&displaylang=en).

That still may not fix everything, though, since your sound drivers didn't seem to be updated (that is what I was hoping for with Windows Update), so it may still need those as well.

Thanks LM...what I didn't do when I dl the first time was to remove the NVIDIA drivers first....bigger-n-Dallas in the instructions. Thievery looks awesome now but I still suck playing. Haven't tried to play THief yet...that's next.

I didn't see where to dl for the sound though. I'll look again but I would probably not realize what it is by the listing.

Go to www.belarc.com. DL the ADVISOR. It will give you a list of exactly what Video card, and the driver version you have. You can print this out.

The site is safe and nothing is kept at their site. The printout you can make will give you a list of all the devices and program apps in your computer.

You can also run DXDIAG from Start-run. Look at the MSINFO page, and it should show the Vcard and info on the drivers. Set the display on the page to advanced.

Well....still can't play Thief. It loads up fine, looks and sounds great but after I begin moving around, it still freezes up. I searched and cannot find a dl for the sound card file. I looked under Realtek ALC202 codec chip. Could it be the DirectX 9? I am not sure if I should just be dl any file I think would fix this thing.

I've upgraded to DirectX 9.0b and Thief: The Metal Age is working just fine. But I'm still on 98SE too. Dunno about Thief Gold though.

I read the read me for once (only because you told me to) and it said I need to insert the Realtex CD before I dl ....can't find a "realtex" CD with the all the CD's that I have. I do have a CD from Toshiba that says "Recovery and Applications/Drivers" Is that it?

Sorry for all the trouble but I am a real noob, live in nowhere Indiana surrounded only by cornsilk and the closest computer store is an hour's drive. If this were during Xmas vacation for colleges, I could pester the friends of my husbands oldest son. They are computer savy.

Edit: I am using the Eidos Platnium Collection and I just noticed on the box that it says WinXP not supported. Does this matter?
