Jonric: What are the main lessons you learned in making Deus Ex and also in making a console version that have help you most in the creation of Invisible War?

Matt Baer: Well, Deus Ex was conceived as a PC game with no intention of heading to a console. But we decided to do a PS2 version of the game, and it was obvious that this was going to be no small task. For one thing, PCs generally have much more memory than consoles. So, we had to optimize our systems and content to fit in a very small memory footprint. Then, we had performance problems. We had to do a lot of custom coding in order to really tap into the power of the console. And finally, the interface was a huge issue. Consoles really force you to think about your interface and make it as streamlined as possible, otherwise your game suffers dramatically. We pretty much had to throw out the PC interface and come up with something entirely new.

So, when we started working on Invisible War, we targeted the console from day one. This time it wasn't an afterthought. Every decision we made along the way considered that we would be running on a console. And I think you'll notice the difference.

Did you notice the difference?

Actually, I didn't. All inoticed were the bugs that were very easily fixable and not included in the Final version.

Makes be dislike warz downloaders even more...they will be the death of PC gaming if some technology is not found to stop them.

Oh god. Why must there be so many cop outs? There is an excuse for everything wrong with this game - now it must be PC warez. (never mind the fact warez is in full swing for Xbox/Ps2 and has been for a VERY long time)

Just face the facts people. No one is to blame here but the devs.

I dont think the mods are going to appreciate an indepth discussion about warz here but it sufices to say that from a business perspective...and PC gaming is a business...Warz is a proven source of lost revenue on the million dollar scale for the pcgame market while it is much smaller in the console market according to the industry reports and hersey ive read. The fact of smaller profits and the difficulties in creating a pc game that runs on all the various pc component combinations makes it less profitable then say an Xbox title...So its not so much a "developers desire" to move to increased emphasis on the Xbox but a push by publishers concerned about maximizing profits..This is the perspective of a hardcore PC gamer not a cop...
