View Full Version : Dumbed Down until Dead

Which would you prefer? I'd quite like it if they made a patch, or a special PC release or SOMETHING to get rid of all this crap that they've added, or to put the brilliant parts back in. Goddamn dumbing down - they really did mean it.

apart from the lean mode, which I think is obsolete, the other three are very important and is part of what made DX1 enjoyable and partly realistic. But I guess you're an arcade gamer.

The no leaning really hurts.... why was it taken out? The demo played like the Mace Griffin game, which was awful console arcadey (in a derogatory way) rubbish! I don't see why Deus Ex 2 is like this. Why does Ion storm say they want millions of people to play this, and by dumbing it down for consoles millions will (because the mainstream likes crap). But why release it for only one console then, the Xbox has only been a moderate success, why don't Ion Storm release it on the PS2 and Gamecube. Not that I'm downing the Xbox, its my favourite console, that doesn't say much though, the PC is a far superior games mahince.
What I'm trying to say is that all this dumbing down, losing the complexity of Deus Ex, does no good. The Xbox is probably the only console out there that can take games with depth as recently shown by Bioware's KOTOR, which allowed the player to choose between a simple interface and and an interface that allowed them to choose every single option. I want Deus Ex back...

Gamecube and PS2 won't handle DX:IW in acceptable manner.

Quite frankly, I find it ridiculous to alter the stuff that made Deus Ex 1 game of the year. DX 1 stood alone as a perfect mix of RPG and 1st person shooter. Now it's just an xbox Half-Life wannabe or something.

I WANT DEUS EX BACK!

I don't see how these absent features are connected to the issue that the game has been merged with a console version.

Leaning - how many times did you honestly use this in the previous game? I doubt any where near the amount you have described you would in the new game.
Skills - well we knew this wasn't going to be in about a year ago, hardly a suprise. And not as if this has anything to do with it being more suitable for a console.
Ammo Type - point taken, I don't know why they would have taken this out.
Reloading - point taken, again not a clue.

I've played through DX 4 times now, and I ALWAYS use the lean keys. They were indispensable for stealthy operations, minimized how much of my body I would expose, and tremendously helped me immerse myself in the game. If you want to peek around a corner, why should you have to move your entire body?

Do we really need another thread on this?

No LEAN? there are mods which enable you to see round thru walls.. thus removing the need for leaning.. Come on 20 years have passed since DX1, things have advanced a LOT :)

What if we want a different mod than that? Apparently the only thing which has advanced is Alex D's arthritis. :p

I never once believed that Deus Ex: Invisible War would lead up to it's predecessor. Secuals rarely do.

If someone wants to bring up a similar topic its up to them...

People who complain about someone starting an already talked about topic, along with posting your one liners "Do we need another topic like this" Need to ignore the topic or get out.

If the game demo wouldve been a succes then we wouldnt be in here posting about it, instead we'd be playing it.

Plain and simple....Ion Storm sold out to Xbox and basically said the hell with what the pc owners want..Thats the gratitude they give you for buying thier first DX1 and making them think they were god!

No lean like someone said was a drunk mans decision. Thats just proof that its an Xbox title and thats it.

H&D2.....EA...IGI2....Unreal2....Chrome multiplayer and Ion Storm......All dropped the ball this year

Excellent poll, and encouraging.
With (right now) 42 people out of the race, I will certainly be able to pick up a copy on the day of release. Ha Hah! So long, suckers, you don't what you're missing. :p

I'll see you for the zero-interaction, zero branched plotline release of Doom 3 sometime in 2006, hmmkay?

You know, there ARE other games besides big name shooters. The choice isn't DXIW vs Doom 3.

Its DXIW vs a host of other great games.

What I hate about this game?

It absolutely PUMMELS you with a "THIS IS A CONSOLE GAME" signs.

If you're gonna make the goddamn game more fitting for console games stay the hell off the PC if you ain't gonna put towards the effort to make it suit it.

The menu system is clunky. The use of crates so you can "crouch" through windows is ridiculous since this is a game based on details and deductive skills of the mind. You can talk your way out of getting mowed down by a gang of junkies but can't manage to throw your leg in through a window sill and slip in? You have to get a crate that's level with he windows ledge for that.

I like how they removed the "specialization" skill system, the fact of the matter is, you're a trained individual, you weren't given nano augmentation because you were a lazy bum, you were given it because you are the cream of the crop, a serious error I saw in the first Deus Ex, props for removing that.

I would like leaning, it's silly to strafe into the open and strafe back real quick to be the way to peek around a corner.

I would like a stealth meter of some kind letting me know when I'm fully hidden from enemy eyes :(

I would like the controls to not shout "This would be easier if you had a console controller and not a Keyboard+Mouse"

I'm REALLY surprised that besides biomods etc. you can't equip your character with things such as disguises for espionage work or to blend in if on the run, a game this detailed in the world of conspiricies things like dressing like the common joe to not be noticed, or the typical spec ops all black decked out in more pouches than batman is demanded!

The game looks great, the dialogue seemed okay but seemed far less involving. Here go kill this for me and come back when you're done. There's no elaborate way to play out the scenario, you either do it or you don't. You can't work out a deal with the pets owner and if you can I couldn't since at first sight I was being attacked immediately, which is ridiculous since I never saw the person before in my game life.

This game has definitely gone many a step back from it's first installment.

If this is what to expect in interface, one can only hope they pull a LOT of better involvement than KOTOR. And I find that hard to believe will happen considering the stuff you can do in that game and the straight forward stuff this is.

Only time will tell whether this game will withstand the scrutiny, KOTOR passed through with flying colors and if this game doesn't match up will most likely win rpg goty.

You got to love how the PC players thinks that stuff has been removed soly becuase there's a XBOX port :D

no leaning
Easily done on XBOX. All FPS games for XBOX got it with very few exceptions

no skills
Easily done on XBOX. If it worked in Morrowind i fail to see why it wouldnt work in DXIW

no different ammo types
Once again easily done.

no reloading
Same

Halo doesn't have leaning iirc.

but I never blamed consoles for the reason why they didn't include leading, I blame consoles for the blur vision and also blame consoles for the clunky menu interface.

I doubt that the lack of commons sense actions such as slipping into a window or pulling ones self up over something is purely on the fault of the development team and is no fault of the fact that it's also an obvious console to pc port, not pc to console port.

And what about he SECURITY CAMERAS. How gay and "dumb-downed" (yes I said it) are they now. I would just love to hear a devs try to confabulate their way out of the OVERLY CONSPICIOUS BRIGHT GREEN RAYS they have BLARING out of the cameras now. For everyone with an unbiased mind, its obvious they did that to make the game easier to play for for immature or less patient gamers who are used to just running around without a second thought. In DX1 you actually had to be sort of careful when entering a new area. Heck, maybe I even had to be quite and use my EARS (GASP!) in order to avoid being seen. So dissapointing.

I don't like that they removed it. It makes my character seem less MY character. I do see the point that nano-auged agents are supposed to be highly-trained.

First, they should make you pretty badass at the beginning. Not like in DX1 where at the beginning you could barely shoot straight unless you were completely stationary and you were about as stealthy as an elephant with cymbals tied to its legs. That's not the way to do it but that doesn't make the idea of specializing in skills a bad thing. Don't forget that you are pretty much a NEW agent and training doesn't always count for experience. You can be as highly trained as you want to be but you're still going to keep learning once you're out in the actual field. Why not reflect that in the game?

Second, the skill point system was a bit too open. It should keep track of how you're getting skill points and allow you to apply them only to the relevant skills. If you're sneaking around alot and avoiding fights, the skill points you get should not be able to be used towards combat skills and so on and so forth. It's ridiculous that I can improve my sniping skills by using the experience I got by hacking terminals a lot. But it's also ridiculous that I can't get better at it than you are even if I put more practice into it than you do. That's one of the things I really enjoy in games and it was enjoyable in DX1. It just needed more thought and a more sensible and advanced system. It allows me to feel that the character is mine and not everyone's basically generic Alex D.

I think it could be useful AND make sense.

Its called a colloquialism brainiac. But im sure you had fun thinking about it. Obviously you too busy day-dreaming about homosexual equipment-porn to derive a plausible rebuttle. What a waste you are.
