Whenever I do a quick movement of my mouse the screen flashes, and it makes the game very annoying. Any ideas on what to do with just the problem, or do you need any other info?

All I can say is make sure you have the latest drivers for your video card. That is sometimes the problem when I have graphical glitches.

Hi folks.

Perhaps you can help me.
My Problem is shown in the topic.
And i have no idea why.
Other games work fine, like Max Payne 2, Gothic II and the Need for Speed Underground Demo.
Only this game.
And the crash is always at the same point, when the mission begins to load,
after i have selected my charakter.
Does anyone have an idea?
I would be pleased.

Best regards, CrAzE

I am going to be almost certain that your drivers are pre 52.16, update to these

The user.ini file is installed `read only` find the file in the folder you installed the game to, and right click on USER.INI and untick `read only` now when u change options it will remember them.

I'm not great with understanding drivers, so here goes.
I have a Gainward GeForce 4 Ti4600. Using the EXPERTool utility I have updated my 'VGA Driver Version' to 4.13.01.2980. This was using an auto-update feature a while ago.
I'm guessing these aren't the right thing, as it didn't say Detonator or ForceWare.

Other information:
P4 2.2GHz
256MB RAM
Windows 98

My question is: What should I do?
And if the answer is driver related, which specific driver should I get?

About the crash:

I opened the Demo Installer, and everything loaded fine. All the archive files expanded to the temporary folder; the installer screen popped up and asked for my email. I gave my email, but the email grab program failed to connect to the Internet (even though I was connected at the time).

After that, a Button menu pops up asking if I want to Install/Uninstall Deus Ex:IW or to Play DX:IW.

Of course, I clicked Install.

Under the installation options, I chose a custom installation, so that I could choose the directory tree for installation of the DX:IW demo. After that, the demo installed fine.

Only thing was, the installer wouldn't shut down, even after it asked if I wanted to read the README (which I did). The installer just would NOT shut down. The Windows XP task manager failed to kill the process, and my hard drive was constantly being queried.

I ended up just hard rebooting. No harm or foul was caused to my machine (as far as I can tell), but you should know that the installer did not shut down properly.

BTW: The Demo is Sweet! :D

I also had problems with sensitivity on the mouse. I fixed that by turning the sensitivity down to ~20 or less.

Also, I have crashed just once during the Demo.

Another situation developed when -> I tried climbing onto the dumpster in front of the patrolling guard next to the keypad controlled gate in the Loft section. I approached the dumpster from the side closest to the entrance to "The Greasel Pit" in a crouched position, getting as close as possible to the side of the dumpster. I then tried jumping onto the top of the dumpster, when a funny thing happened:

I started FLOATING on air!

Apparently my character avatar got stuck in the side of the dumpster (on one of the protuberances), and then failed to fall back down to the ground. I started "skating" across the ground, with what looked like "clouds" emanating from my avatar. Weird. I was no longer able to crouch or jump. I was stuck between a jump and a crouch.

www.nvidia.com is your best bet. go there and find latest driver for windows 98 that will sort your issue out.. and make sure you are running directx 9

i'm having probs with pixelated doom like graphics. Everything looks fine if it's within about 15 feet of me but after that, everything looks really pixelated. It looks like doom at 320x240. Maybe Alex D. is near sighted or something :(

My mouse lags. I'm not sure if it's a video related problem or not, but when I move the mouse, it doesn't register for a fraction of a second. It's not the normal type of video lag you get from low frames-per-second.

When I run the initial downloaded exe file it will decompress everything to the temp folder, but when Install Shield starts I get a windows error and after hitting okay the install halts. I can't even run the files manually from temp because once I clear the windows error the files are erased.

1. I couldnt find an option to install the demo in another partition besides C:. It better be fixed for the full game
2. The demo wouldnt remember my seetings if I quit the game and then restart.
3. There were artifacts(little squares of white) around certain objects and characters.
3. Besides very nice lighting and shadows, it looks like low poly console crap.
4. I jumped up on the holo gram girl in the bar trying to investigate the rafters , dropped down and was stuck in crouch and could not get off my belly.

Ive just begun the demo. I hope there isnt more.

When I first installed the game, I noticed that after the intro movies/loading screens, certain aspects of the color palette look all messed up (very bright, primary colors - yellow/green/blue etc.), much like you might expect from a video game or movie "heat vision" or "infrared" effect (think "The Predator").

Upon entering the game, I noticed that the areas most affected by this are the dark/darkest areas. The areas that appear to be lit by a light source look normal.

Clearly, the game wasn't intended to be played this way, but it's horrendously ugly and obviously something is wrong.

Just a few minutes ago, I decided to play with the Gamma/Brightness/Contrast settings (in-game) and you know what? If I turn them -all- ALL the way up, the 'effect' goes away. But, everything looks bright and rather washed out (does the demo start, taking place at nighttime?). If I turn those settings down, the 'Predatorvision' effect starts kicking in, getting most exaggerated the lower I go.

So, um... what the heck is the problem? :) I have NEVER seen a problem like this in a game.

Intel P4 2.6GHz
1GB RAM
Gainward GeForce FX 5900 128MB w/52.16 drivers
Sound Blaster Audigy 2 w/latest drivers
Windows XP Home (fully updated)
DirectX v9.0b

I realize it may be hard to understand what I'm describing if you haven't actually seen it (or if I could somehow get screenshots and get them hosted someplace). But does this sound like a problem any has? Or can guess the cause?

Thanks.

Same problem here Umma...

edit: Downloaded it a 2nd time just now... got the same error with that file too. It gets 100% done extracting, then goes to run the install wizard... crashes, and says this:

"InstallshieldWizzard
Setup has experienced an error

Please do the following:
- close any running programs
- Empty your temporary folder
- Check your Internet connection (Internet-based Setups)

Then try to reun Setup again.

Error code: -6002"

I'm cable, so I'm online constantly. Temp folder is empty. Only program running is the installer. I won't be buying Deus Ex: IW if I can't even install the demo... most likely I won't be able to install the full gamne either :(

Well, I got 2 computers. Nethier one would play it.

Computer 1:

1.2
NVidea Gforce2

I installed it, and when I try to play I just get a black screen with the DX window around. Then theres an error. I cant read the error, cause I cant see it, the DX window is in the way. I know its there though, for when I hit Control Alt Delete. I gave up and went to computer 2

Computer 2

1.8
Nvidea Gforce4

I installed it. Got into the game, set my options and everything. Clicked "New game". Im in, but I cant see anything. Everything is just a solid gray color. When I shoot, there is a flash of a light gray and as I move it changes, but there still is no real picture. I have a similer problem with Halo. Everyhting is fine on this compouter unless I try to zoom in. Its all a solid color when I do. Depending on where I look, changes the brightness of the solid gray color.

Any ideas?

I get the exact same thing but it also lists as 5002 and 6002 for error codes. I have a DSL connection on a wireless network settings are default otherwise connection will not work. I was thinking that perhaps its looking for a dialup connection or because I have not specified the type of online connection it assumes I have none? My question is what the hell does it need a online connection for????

yeah... I'm getting the 5002 every now and then as well. But mostly the 6002 it seems.

I've been strongly anticipating this game since it was first revealed in a PC Gamer in 2001 (i think it was 2001). Now the demo is out and I can't even install it... and while I'm complaining about not being able to install it, everyone else in the world is complaining about how bad the game is. I want to play the demo myself to tell, but seein as how it won't install I guess I'll have to rely on everyone elses word and give this game a pass. If I can't install the demo, I don't have high hopes for the game. That is unless this problem we're having with installing is fixed shortly.

And the worst part about your comment is (nothing to do with you ofcourse)... that the retail date is getting more and more into 2004 than its december 2003...

AMD Athlon 2100+
Geforce 4 ti4200 128MB (45.23 detonators)
512MB PC3200 RAM

Windows XP

The game runs fine, but for whatever reason trying to start a new game gives me a disc space error. It tells me to click the left mouse button to return to the menu, but this does nothing, forcing me to press ESC and quit the game. Considering that I have over 4GBs free, I seriously doubt that this is the real problem... any help would be much appreciated.

I've a 3GHZ HT P4, 1GB RDRAM with a 9700Pro.

The game runs smooth as silk so far, but I get weird little grey blocks a few pixels square appearing and disappearing on the faces and to a lesser extent bodies of some characters, the pool table in the bar and all over the guard outside the apartment block.

Now I know this sounds like overclocking/heating but I have had no trouble with Unreal II, Splinter Cell, 3DMark 2003 etc. and seems too fixed on particular objects to be this anyway. I was very modestly overclocking the card, turned everything back to defaults and the same problems on the same objects.

I have catalyst 3.9.

I have the 'Predatorvision' problem, and also was wondering..

..why with max ingame details, max AA and AF running at 1280x1024, does this game look *worse* than Deus Ex 1? I mean Deus Ex 1 ran beautifully (for quite a few of my systems). The details were much crisper, albeit there weren't too many poly's. The only noticable graphics upgrade were the new lighting effects. And one of the chicks kinda looks like a friend I know. But thats not the point.

I also noticed that with 'bloom' disabled, my fps drops horribly. It looks so weird.. I mean it looks like the 16x Ansiotropic filtering is being overlapped by a second bilinear filtering layer. (is that possible?)

This is running a 2500+ @ 3200+ speeds with a radeon 9800 Pro and 512MB ddr400.

As far as the gameplay goes.. It's hard to play. I get a lot of mouselag running @ my regular settings (max ingame details at 1024x768). I think the story and the basis for the game is superb, and I'm madly inlove with the chick who sings in the intro theme (:D ), so aside from the storyline and the audio, im very disappointed with the graphics/gameplay. Gameplay meaning "halo pc-like" fps.

Maybe its just me? I hope its just me. I feel this is a big disappointment, and the best game ever at the same time. :confused:

I am trying to enjoy this demo but whenever the game loads(starting a new game, going into the bar...etc) the controls reset themselves. I have unchecked read-only for the user.ini file, and even tried to manually change the settings, but they never change. This is very frusterating. I also got lots of black/white dots when multisampling was enabled.

Well, I found disabling Blooms gives a much better image, why sharper and more detailed, I liked the gfx and most of the gameplay, but performance is horrible, even on my Athlon 64 with a R9800P does this game need 1 gig mem? I have still 512?

Hey Valos, your not the only one with that problem. I have the same error message everytime I try to run the demo. Maybe someone can help me/us.

My specifications are as follows:

1.7ghz AMD
Nvidia MX440 64mb
512mb Ram
Windows XP

^^Didn't find it neccesary to post EVERYTHING as some people have done^^

I don't believe I have the newest Nvidia Driver( I am in the process of actually uploading my copy of the demo to someone else so if I install the new driver I will be forced to restart) but maybe there is something else wrong...I remember when trying to play another game that people in the forums said the MX Series of Nvidia Video cards were crap. Well, anyway, if there is anyone out there that could help me I would really appreciate it.

Thanks,

Not to beat a dead horse but there have been several posts in this forum regarding the MX 440 cards...it won't run the game. Doesn't have the pixel shaders needed to play it. You could do a search and find what was said about that card and this game. Sorry to have to say this but it has been stated several times. Ta and Good Hunting!

Ok for those that still are unable to get the game to install please try this.

use your 'Run" option in the start menu and enter this:
msconfig

click on startup now click disable all.

I re-selected my startup for my wireless internet connection so that it would be the only thing still in my startup menu. You may need to do this as well if you have Internet issues.
I am running WinXp and this procedure does not turn off any critical programs. Well good luck if you have any questions please just ask! :)

AIW Radeon 9700 Pro (351/351)

Please understand, I'm not trying to brag, but I have a FAST machine. And yes, I can play the game pretty well with the setting kinda lowish (1024x768 max), but it should be MUCH smoother than it is even with higher settings. I've played other games that look better, have higher poly counts, larger textures, etc. and run smoothly at 1600x1200 & high settings. Low frames are one thing if the graphics are super advanced, but we're talking sub-par visuals here AND low framerate/sluggish response. Maybe I've just gotten spoiled by getting 60+ frames in EVERY other game, but that begs the question: Why am I not getting them here? Don't tell me because of the advanced graphics, I have eyes.

- Just went back into the game and after loading the level and playing around a bit I checked my mem usage and I still had 260Meg+ free, so we can eliminate my lack of 2Gs of RAM as the problem.

The mouse icon doesn't move whenever I'm not in gameplay (like moving around, etc). When I go to the keyboard control setup menu, the icon stays stuck in the middle of the screen, but the mouse control works - meaning that I can select controls and even assign them mouse buttons. However, the main title screen features a large, unresponsive mouse icon (without the benefit of mouse control like in the keyboard setup area).

However, the mouse works fine during gameplay.

If you want the demo to look very sharp, and not look like ass (but run slow) then make sure your user.ini is not "read only" and also change the line in default.ini

[WinDrv.WindowsClient]
WindowedViewportX=1024
WindowedViewportY=768
WindowedColorBits=32
FullscreenViewportX=1024
FullscreenViewportY=768
FullscreenColorBits=32
Brightness=1.0
Contrast=1.0
Gamma=1.0
MipFactor=1.000000
UseDirectDraw=True
UseJoystick=False
CaptureMouse=True
StartupFullscreen=True
CurvedSurfaces=True
LowDetailTextures=False
ScreenFlashes=True
NoLighting=False
SlowVideoBuffering=True
DeadZoneXYZ=True
DeadZoneRUV=False
InvertVertical=False
ScaleXYZ=1000.0
ScaleRUV=2000.0
MinDesiredFrameRate=30
Decals=True
NoDynamicLights=False

change the "MinDesiredFrameRate=30" to "MinDesiredFrameRate=0" That way it wont reset your video settings to complete ass when your frames fall below 30 fps.

When I start the demo, I just get a blank screen and a "busy" mouse cursor. If I press Enter several times then I eventually see the loading screen, but then the screen turns solid magenta. I can hear sounds when I press buttons, but the screen just stays magenta.

I tried installing the latest Catalyst drivers (3.9), but that did not fix the problem.

But that's ok we all do at some point.
Just wondering how you are checking your fps? I am running the game at 1024x768 Multi Sampling 4x and its extremely smooth.
I have a adequate rig kinda in the middle as far as systems go.

But that's a good thing, because it means once the bugs are worked out most folks that have average systems can run the game and run it well.
Here's my specs for comparative purposes (definitely no brag rights here)

OS WinXp Pro
AMD XP 2100/266
Abit AT7-Max2 w/t 1gig DDR2100
Radeon 9600 agp 128meg

I wish I could tell you that I was looking at an FPS display, but unfortunately the devs decided (probably wisely) not to give us one that I know of. My only available method for judging FPS is "can I see the flickering/stuttering/jerking/etc." and unfortunately I can. And I don't mean at 1600x1200, I'm talking 1024x768. It's not pronounced, but it's there and I don't see ANY on other, better looking games even on 1600x1200 when there's a ton of action. I realise that the highest available resolutions might be a bit much to ask from a brand new game, but this just seems a tad ridiculous.

Hey everyone with the "Predator vision" problem, I think I've found a fix for it. Just had to register to hopefully let some of you start playing the demo. ;)

Well, if you're using an nvidia card, you may have that nvidia desktop manager thingy running. I use it to set custom profiles of brightness/contrast/gamma/digital vibrance for different cases, like me just surfing the net, or playing certain games. I was using a custom profile when I first played the demo, and I got the "Predator vision" problem. But, if I set the profile back to the default settings, the problem's gone. Give that a go, and sorry if that doesn't help. Good luck. ;)

Now... back to playing a little bit more before playing around with the ini, which looks a little different to the other unreal engine games'. Ah well.

Odd thing is these are programs running in the background...I have always closed out active items that were running on the desktop itself before install. But I never thought all those little startup items you never actually see would effect the game!

That doesn't work for me either. I'veturned off read-only and it didn't make a difference. The game does not save any of my settings to that file, or any file. I also tried just editing the ini file and it makes no difference; the game doesn't even read from that file for me. No idea why. So then i found the default.ini and changed all of those to what i wanted - made no difference. The game doesn't read from that file either. What the crap - is the hardcoded or something? Is it really neccessary that i play at 640x480 with crappy controls. Gee, let's think about this - what forces you to play games at 640x480 and has poor reconfiguration options. The answer: Consoles - YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY!!!

I had the same problem with the small grayish squeres and a fuzzy like pixelated effect. When I turned "Bloom" off it fixed the problem although the lag went up (with 1024x768 @ 6 MS who's complaining?)

Just a thought for every 1

my problem isnt as bad as most peoples here but I will post it anyway

For no reason at all the windows mouse pointer appears in game and then when i move it over a window outside the game (Which is hidden by the game itself) and click I get taken out the game because it selects the window! :(

Also I get serious mouse lag on a 3.2ghz gig of ram and a 9800 pro gfx card.

Which is just odd :O

Ok my problem is verry annoying cuase when i start playing the game the only thing i can see is the Hud, everything else is green/blue, and when i move the mouse it flimmers.
i have a Geforce 3 64 Mb Ti500, 1024 ram (think its DDR), and every new game i try works. I hope this goes away with real game and thats its just some crappy demo bug.

Hey all, glad some of you are enjoying the demo.

Few issues of note:

The black dots appearing on the radeon cards when you have multisampling above 1x is a known issue with the current drivers, hopefully we'll get a fix from ATI shortly.

If you are getting strange colours(colors) appearing ingame menus or in game, try setting your graphic cards settings back to defaults. Remember to save personal settings in a profile or take note of them so you dont lose them. This should sort the problem out. I believe its related to the settings for `performance and quality` settings..

Which motherboard you got, will be able to tell you if the chipset supports pixel shader or not

I suppose my only gripe right now is that the controls keep resetting themselves. I booted up the demo, changed some of the controls around, then started the actual game. Found out they had already been reset. :rolleyes: That could get annoying.

Trying to look up on MSI website details for that motherboard but it comes up with a lot of stuff, anyway to `narrow` the options a bit, maybe tell me what dxdiag says you have as a vga card

Your motherboard? (http://www.msi.com.tw/program/products/mainboard/mbd/pro_mbd_detail.php?UID=10) I think this is yours, if SO then am afraid your chipset is an MX chipset which wont run the game. No pixel shader support :)

Try this.. select all the files (and directories) and go to properties, remove the read only then, if you are 2k/xp it will ask if you want to make this change on all sub directories.. say yes.. ie remove readonly on ALL files

Does that help?

This issue doesn't occur in full version, was something that unfortunately slipped into the demo build, its not a problem for all users however (which is the strange part)

Ok, so any workaround/fix/whatever? As some others have tried as well, messing with various .ini's is not helping.

Hmm i not sure of any other way.. aside from finding out from those who had the `read only` thing work for them exactly what they did.. ie.. install NOT play change from read only, only use wordpad etc etc etc.. many things could affect it..

there is a default.ini file.

ALWAYS use wordpad to edit the INI file.. notepad loses the formatting

I tried installing the latest Catalyst drivers (3.9), but that did not fix the problem.

Fixed the problem! I had DirectX 9.0a installed. Updating it to 9.0b seems to have fixed the problem. Odd.

There is 2 possibilities to this:

1. Your graphics card is of the GF MX Family

2. Your driver has to be of the newest, eg. v. 52.16

I prefer the 'turn off bloom' workaround to turning down multi-sampling.

Ok, here's my two cents' worth, some of these have already been mentioned others not.

Spec:
ATI Radeon 9000 Mobile
Centrino 1.5 GHz
256 MB DDR

The worst is this: all the characters' faces are a nice, shiny, chocolate brown colour. Their bodies retain their normal textures, but the faces (except NG - she's brown all over) look as if they've been digging in the dirt or undergoing some heavy tanning.

The mouse doesn't work in the menus, just kinda sits there in the middle of the screen. Compliments to the interface - the mouse is pretty much redundant as it is, but it wouold be nice to have it back.

As has been said, settings don't get saved properly (I have to re-configure 'crouch' to 'Ctrl' every time I load/enter new level).

The mouse sometimes gets stuck looking at the ceiling or floor and spinning wildly, usually frees itself after a bit of wiggling about though.

Apart from that, (almost) all good :)

Overall cool, but had to turn the settings to 640x480 to solve the HORRIBLE mouse lag, which made the game unplayable otherwise.

Have to reset the controls everytime I reload or go to another area...?

No, Sigma, there is no way around it. You CANNOT run the game (full or demo) on a Geforce 4 MX card. You MUST have a card that supports pixel and vertex shader 1.1 or better.

The worst is this: all the characters' faces are a nice, shiny, chocolate brown colour. Their bodies retain their normal textures, but the faces (except NG - she's brown all over) look as if they've been digging in the dirt or undergoing some heavy tanning.

Apart from that, (almost) all good :)

Ahh laptops and integrated graphics, I got Vaio with a FX5600 GO, they have a habit of not taking the latest drivers easily - i've had to get a 'fix' to let me put 52.16 on my laptop. Am gonna take a guess you are not running the latest catalyst drivers. That will possibly address other issues you having too

Hopefully you are able to update your mobile graphics card drivers.. Good luck! (oh and put directx9b on ya system)

Having a problem changing resolution in the video options menu. Whether this is done right at the beginning or while in-game when I change the resolution the colors and textures are corrupted to an unplayable level. If I change the resolution back or to any other setting at this point it will just change the distorted colors and textures but it is still unplayable. The only way I've found around this is to exit the game and edit the default.ini file to set the resolution at run time.

Yeah - ATI doesn't release any drivers for 'Mobile' cards, as they've got their own customisations for individual laptops. On the Toshiba site it says these are the latest drivers they've got for the Radeon.

Do you know anywhere where there might be a similar 'fix' for Radeon cards?

I have struggled with the" turn too quick and the screen goes blank bug." I find the the effect is perminent if I turn on the bloom effect, and the only thing that gives at least a limited fix is hitting f2 so I can see people through walls. The screen doesnt blink when I am in that mode. I am not using the latest drivers because they cause my system to lock up when ever 3d is used.
I hope this gets resolved before release, I would really kill my, and from what is sounds like, many other peoples experience.

44.03 drivers are the source of the problem, update to 45.33, i know that driver goes some way to fix the issue, the only 100% fix is 52.16..

For the future tho you should find out why your machine wont take the newer driver as it vastly improves the nvidia cards, and am sure more games will need it as it matures

I have 2 problems with the demo. The fact that the changes I make in key bindings do not keep if I have to reload the game or I go between the apartments section and the bar section. That sucks.

Second, I have tried to use the stun stick and it doesn't work. It creates a lightning bolt that goes from you position to the person and locks on them but doesn't stun them or hurt them. Funny thing is that you can step away and see where one end of the lightning is fixed to your last position while the other end is attached to the target no matter where it goes. Kinda useful to see if the person is coming back. Still, it sucks that I can't stun someone. Anybody else have this problem?

I've got a problem no one else seems to have mentioned: I can start playing and all seems normal. Then, after I move a few steps, that lady pops up and gives me my objectives. Immediately after that, a thing pops up saying that my datavault has been initialized and the game crashes.

Well, at least I assume it crashes. It might not have. It's just that the DX mouse cursor pops up and almost immediately freezes, along with the game and my computer. No mashing of alt-f4 nor ctrl-alt-delete can recover my system.

This might just be because I'm running win98, you never know.

Other specs:

AMD Athlon 2000+
ATI Radeon 9600 Pro (I got the newest drivers after this started happening and it still happens, so that's not the issue.)
512 mb ram

I have a Radeon 9600, P4 1.5ghz, 512Ram.

#1 Using 1024x768 and Multisampling x1, the game slows to a slideshow. Upping to x2 or more fixes it, and other resolutions work with x1 MS, however this exact combination goes like 5FPS. Unluckily this is the one I was hoping to play at...

#2 Mentioned several times already, and seems to be a pattern w/ Radeon owners, I get these wierd gray pixels all over peoples faces. It only seems to be during conversation too.

Installed just fine, but two things go wrong that make me kill the process before i get into the actual game:

1. the startup videos arent loading--just black screem--have to skip em all.
2. at the loading screen, after loading, the screen flashes pink, and no other menu screens load visibally--its stuck on the first, the rest wont render. If i click and flounder with the mouse a bit, i can hear it going into other menu items but they dont load for me to see. Lots of pink and corrrupted images. Impossible to start actual gameplay. Somethins not right.

I believe I'm set to run it properly, though:

WinXP SP1
1.3Ghz Athlon Tbird
512mb pc2100
Geforce 3 Standard (Pre Ti/MX, has pixel shading :P ) 64mb
MSI K7 mobo
DirectX 9b
LATEST NVIDIA DRIVERS: 52.16 WHQL!

Tried running it on older drivers first, then updated to the newest. Didn't help.
Any takers?

I can help you with that problem: open your Default.ini file in WORDPAD after backing it up somewhere, and find the lines that say

[PCStartup]
ShortIntroMovies__d=d:\content\dx2\VideoTex... long line blah...
ShortIntroMovies__t=d:\content\dx2\VideoTextures\eidos-logo.bik

Change them to this:
[PCStartup]
ShortIntroMovies__d=
ShortIntroMovies__t=

That should skip the movies at the start, and just go straight to the game.

I found out that if you change any settings in the default.ini file, they are applied before the main menu comes up. I changed the resolution in Default.ini to 1024x768, and it actually switches to that res, and then when it gets to the main menu, it switches to CrappyVision™ at 640x480. I hope the My Documents thing works...

EDIT: Later on...

Well, the video settings etc don't stay, but the controls do. What's up with that? Also, are we going to see leaning, reloading and put away current weapon keys in the final game? I hope so :(

Putting weapons away does exists.. keys 1-6 are your inventory hotkeys, press once to select, press again to put away

I have Vaio laptop with a GF FX 5600 go in it.. fully supports the game, but officially sony's drivers are 4x.xx range still which the means i get graphical issues. I had to find a get round for my laptop to get the latest drivers on it and it all works fine now.

Sorry but far from being high end...the Geforce 4 mx460 is at the low end of the spectrum. Do a google search if you don't believe me but it's basically a higher clocked mx440 and hence no pixel shaders. Unfortunately Nvidia have a clever marketing ploy being that the Gef4mx range performs worse than Gef3.

Actually the GF 4 460 GO does have the pixel shader support needed, but its the fact its a laptop which hinders the drivers.

I'll wager you a million piece of gold....infact all the wealth in the universe that the Geforce 4 460go does not have hardware pixel shaders.
All you need is the card and 3DMark01 (for example), if it can run the nature test and the pixel shader test I'd eat my arse.

You is right, i just saw the page on nvidias site listing the GO series then mentioning the Pixel shader engine.. bit sneaky if you ask me :) only the 4200 go has any support..

Anyone who wants to find out their frames per second can do so with a piece of shareware called FRAPS. I haven't found an application it doesn't work for yet. Give it a shot. On my system, I'm getting between 25-50 FPS in the demo.

www.fraps.com

Also, one other advantage to this program is it has the added ability to record in-game footage with audio, as well.

err, flash or flesh?

Also, give us the spec of your system. Most importantly what graphics card you have, go to display properties and at settings it'll say where your monitor or TFT is getting its input from.

After trying different drivers, it's still running unsatisfyingly slow. I've heard from people running the demo well with no slowdowns on very similar or even nearly the same systems. But I often get slowdowns, and the framerate is choppy in many areas. Is there a solution to this, or at least a known cause?

I've tried: 45.23 WHQL, 52.16 WHQL, 53.03 beta - not much difference between them for me.

My system:
Athlon XP 2000+
Asus A7N8X (nForce2, 3.13 WHQL drivers)
512MB RAM
Geforce 4 Ti 4200 (128MB)
Windows XP

While standing in the fence door right at the start, crosshair focused on the cyan thing in the distance, I get ~20 frames per second. At 800x600, x2, Bloom on. Anyone with a similar setup care to check and share what they get?

MaxxQ
23rd Nov 2003, 22:16
Amorpheus...try disabling Bloom. IMO, the game looks better without it, and you get a bit of a framerate increase.

Huntress
23rd Nov 2003, 22:27
Yea I agree about not having other running programs as much as possible when playing or installing games...and some others if running in background as well if necessary, should some of them prevent you from getting better performance when "playing". Sounds a bit weird to have background proggies interfere with installing though???? Hmmmm, Ta and Good Hunting!

The only concern I have for now (I just finished installing the game) is demo being required to be played under the administrative profile. I just don't get why some outfits ignore security ...it's like they are still programming for Win98 and WinMe.

In any event, there's a reason to have a administrative profile and user profiles. The admin account was never really intended to be used as user profile.

I'm a father ...and I don't want my son playing this game with administrative access. Anyway, I hope they expand the privlages so that the game can be played in the user profile/account in the final version ...otherwise it's doubtful that I'd get it.

Amorpheus
23rd Nov 2003, 22:47
I've played around with the options before, but didn't notice much difference in performance with Bloom off, no improvement - in fact, measuring it, at 2x multisampling the game gets slower, and with 1x it's exactly as fast.

For installation theres a chance you'd have to install DirectX, this requires Admin rights to the machine as its a system update. Almost all games require admin rights for installation purposes due to this reason, and cannot be got around unlike 98/me which has no real tight security model.

As for playing game its usually easier to jus keep the requirements the same. I'll check into it tomorrow to see what the full game does. It utilises the %user%\my documents\ folder for saves etc, so its possible it may work if installed by an admin then played by a user.

Massionva

No no ...you don't understand ...the installation of the game as the administrator is a good thing ...but the requirement to "play" the game in the admin account is bad. It breeeches the purpose for having security

I have mouse lag and overall very very poor performance.

My specs are;
P4 2.5GHz
768MB DDR
ATI 9600Pro 128MB (Catalyst 3.8 drivers)
M-Audio Revolution sound
Windows XP Home

I've turned everything down as far as it can go, shadows, lighting, everything to 'low', I've turned resolution down as far as it will go, I've tried with or without vsync and bloom, still the same p*ss poor performance.
I can run games like Max Payne 2 with everything maxed out and it runs smooth as a baby's bottom, but this game is another story altogether.
It's especially bad when I'm close to or looking directly at light sources.

Anyway, I hope they get this straightened out before the final release, I'm very.. Aprehensive now.

Cheers,
Addy

EDIT: I read the readme file and saw Catalyst 3.8 isn't supported, so upgraded to 3.9 Now the game is a LOT better, it's playable, but it still doesn't run as silky smooth as for instance MP2, and I still have that mouse lag.
Also, I removed the 'read only' tag from the ini file, yet I still have to re-setup my settings between levels.

Those with the flashing magenta screen issue:
Problem solved after I reinstalled DirectX9, which got rid of those old debug ones (lots of them)--turns out i had the SDK installed instead of end-user. Wasn't a video card or driver issue.

If you look at the .ini files and default. files you'd see that it looks almost as if the game has been optimised for xbox (i.e. default 640x480) *cough*

I know why your computer with the Geforce2 won't run, it's because the Geforce 2 doesn't support Pixel Shader 1.1. I have the same problem because I have a Geforce2 Ultra. When I try to start the demo it won't start and tells me Deus Ex 2 requires a card with pixel shader 1.1 support. I figure I will just have to play the game on my Xbox, because I don't want to upgrade my video card until the next generation of cards comes out. Good luck trying to get it to run on your Geforce4

For those having performances issues, you can do what I did. It helped my performance. I'm not sure if it'll work for you. I went into the install directory and opened Default.ini with Wordpad(this is a must, as it will screw up the formatting if you don't.) I adjusted this section:

[D3DDrv.D3DRenderDevice]
Translucency=True
VolumetricLighting=False
ShinySurfaces=True
Coronas=True
HighDetailActors=True
UseMipmapping=True
UseTrilinear=True
UseMultitexture=True
UsePageFlipping=True
UsePalettes=False
UseFullscreen=False
UseGammaCorrection=True
DetailTextures=True
Use3dfx=False
UseTripleBuffering=True
UsePrecache=True
Use32BitTextures=True
UseComputedRefreshRate=False
UseManualRefreshRate=True
ManualRefreshRateHz=85

The above has been altered from the default configuration. Make a copy of the original file and try it with these settings. I'm using a Geforce 4 Ti 4600, just in case you're wondering.

The above really helped a lot of the lag I was getting both graphically and with my mouse.

I cant believe people are still asking about this problem after it's been discussed so much since the demo's release (even in this very thread!!). Anyways, you're going to want to go to the documents and settings folder on your c:drive to find the user.ini to disable the read only flag. It will be in a folder called Deus Ex demo or something, open that and find the user.ini and un-check the read only check box.

Adunakhor

Well, seems I had the sdk version of
direct x installed as well, and installing the
end user version took care of those bizarre graphic problems, so thanks!

I tried playing it a bit, but I think I need
to go in and muck with the .ini files, as so
many have suggested. Also, it was VERY choppy in max resolution...which begs the
question:

If my month and a half old Alienware machine can't run this game maxed out, whose can?

Anyway, thanks again for the help, and now its off to the races....

Ok, i understand that problem. That same happens on mine, BUT if the read only box is unchecked and you set you're settings then save your game...your saved settings will be restored upon loading your saved game. For some reason the game just always executes in the default res. So basically you'll start at the intro screen with 640x480 res, but when you load your saved game it will also change to the res you want.

I've edited the default. file in systems as well. *rubs chin* hmm, perhaps this is because the demo tends more optimised to the xbox (going by the res mainly).

There is no way to play this game (yet) with the gf4 mx cards. Possibly in the future someone could make a patch or something for the game to allow these cards without the specific shader support to play the game, but i dont know much about that stuff.

And yes, HL2 will support those weak mx cards but dont expect to have much of any great graphics and/or performance from them on that game. If you want to play new high end games, you better make a habit of keeping up with new high end hardware.

To be honest, pixel shader capable cards have been around for nearly 3 years...it's aggravating when ppl fail to realise that games can't just go on looking amazing yet can run on Geforce 2 technology.
The Pixel shaders are apparently used in shadows and lighting effects, its a part of the engine so I doubt anything but a major patch could change it and I'm not sure what alternative if any there is...

Ok, this is what you do if you want default settings when loading the game.

You need to open DemoLog.log (remember to make a backup) and add the graphics settings from Default.ini at the end (changing them to fit what you want your settings to be), on the line right after the last bracket. Do not leave any spaces.

With any luck, they should kick in when you start a new game :)

I'm having the same problem. The demo seems to install fine but when I try to start a new game I get the following error message:
"Your PC doesn't have enough free space to start a new game. 'L-Mouse' to return to the menu or 'ESC' to exit Deus Ex: Invisible War."

System Specs:
AMD Athlon XP 2400+
WinXP Pro
ASUS A7N8X Deluxe
Gainward GeForce 3 (64MB) with 52.16 drivers
DirectX 9.0
512MB RAM
Virtual Memory set to 768MB
80GB hard drive with 57GB free!! :confused:

Any ideas? Thanks!

Does anyone know how to turn off the "bloom" in the settings. Once I downloaded the demo tweaker I'm not able to turn off this function and the game looked better when it was off. When I left click to get rid of it, nothing happens and no matter what I've tried I can't seem to disable it. Thanks

Are you running with Admin priveledges? Maybe that would cause it but I don't know. Please let us know if you or anyone figures that out.

I've found there were a few menu choices that I had to select with arrow keys before
I could change them with the mouse....
probably another sign that this game was
made with consoles in mind...

Not sure if it will help your specific problem, but worth a try...

Thank you very much. I just went and tried that and it worked like a charm! Dam, why didn't I think of that. One other thing, do you know how to get the glass upgrade (I guess to break glass w/out setting off alarms) on the pistol to work?? I just can't figure that one out either. Thanks again. That has been driving me crazy!

As most of you know Thief 3 will use the same engine. After messin with the default.ini file I noticed [T3SETTINGS] and under it was settings like garrettfootstep=1 (Garrett is the thief in the game for those who dont know) This isnt technical but since you guys know that file thought you guys might what to take a look. I love the Thief series so I thought this was pretty cool.

ok,

I don't exactly have the most powerfull machine in town, but I kind of assumed I would be able to load the demo and see something.

currently when I try to start the demo, I get an hour-glass and a black screen. I can press ctrl-alt-delete and can see that its "not responding".

I don't get an error with any information, I just get annoyed :)

anyway, reading through the forums it appears most ppl with this problem are running nvidia hardware, but I have a radeon.

who else is having similar problems and will there be a new demo released ? obviously people are less likely to buy a game if the demo doesn't work on their hardware.

I know how to install the upgrade I just don't know how to USE it. If you right click it turns on the flashlight, how do I actually use the upgrade? Thanks. Also does anyone know why when you click on a weapon or anything in inventory that it switches items as you select them. Example; I want info about a paticular item, and when I click on it, it moves in the inventory to a different slot. Now I have to go looking for it again to get the info. Thanks again.

"There is no way to play this game (yet) with the gf4 mx cards."

yes you completely right that you cannot play all new games and not upgrade yur technology but when this technology exist and you buy prety new video card and pay lot for it you expect it to match this games. yes you can never know what technology will come out but same card that has a litle different ending - ti already has this features :( like waste of money i say...

i dont say it must be as fast as newest cards but atleast have features that games already have...

real shame...

well i guess i'll keep playing Tenebrea [hehe quake 1 on doom3-like engine] it has prety good pixel shader which works on my pc and run realy well :)

And will not buy new cards in next few years wasting dosen of money on cards that are already old, i just wasted all i had on new card already...

And defenetly will not buy deusex2 in close time :)

And yes half life wont run all the cool features and will not be 100% fast but atleast i will get the chance to get impression and maybe it will make me want to upgade my system to see this features afterall.

Tnk you anyway :)

I think it's context sensitive. If you install the glass destabilizer mod, then when you shoot a window, it will automatically fire glass destabilizer rounds, then switch to normal rounds when firing at other objects (or people).

It does that so you can arrange the items in your inventory the way you want. Example: maybe some players want to put all their weapons right next to each other, and all other items next to each other. I dont exactly remember, but i think if you click the item once you can switch it's spot in the inventory with another item, and if you click the item again you'll be able to click on another item without moving the first item.

Well if you're on a tight budget i'd recommend the GF4 Ti4200 64mb. It may be a little more than $75 but i think it's the best card you'll get for around that price. Try http://www.newegg.com/

I believe its related to the settings for `performance and quality` settings..

jaycw2309,

You seem to be part of the development team.

Could you suggest a decent nvidia and ati card/chipset for those of us who have to upgrade. I want to buy a decent one that plays the game well, im trying to figure out which one to buy through reading posts but everyone seems to be having troubles with the demo and FPS. Do you know which one runs the best and maybe suggest a few cards so I can shop.

sorry to hear all the people who can't run the demo.

suggestions in order of desirability:
GF4 Ti4200 (hard to find nowadays)
ATI 9200/9100/8500 (don't buy SE/LE versions)
GFFX5200 Ultra (make sure its not a 64bit version

all three are dirt cheap, but a GF4 would be the best choice if it can be found.

No need to give him too much credit :p

Anyway, if you're a newbie at GPUs then I'm going recommend a mid range card, and at mid range I'd still lean more towards ATi for value against performance. A 9600Pro is a decent card, nice performance and good price. I'd recommend Tyan or Sapphire brand for those cards.

It all comes down to your budget.

The 9200 is a cutdown version of 8500/9100 so thats best to avoid, period.

err, although you can get a FX5200 with 64bit memory interface I think we can safely assume all Ultra versions have 128bit mem.

This is like the thousandth time it has been asked and answered. In many interviews with the developers months and months before this demo's release it was said that pixel shaders are required to run the game...for Nvidia this is Gef3 and above (excluding the crappy Gef4mx) and for ATi this is Radeon8500 and above.
btw, for your Gef2 ti you should be using det 28.xx for best performances anyway seeing as the latest drivers are optimised specially for FX range.

I asked this question about a week ago and per Grey Mouser, the game will play/use cards that support DX8.1...however, cards that require DX9 drivers to work will then need DX9 drivers for the game. You do "not" have to have DX9 only drivers to play the game...it just depends on your card basically. :) That is not to say that you won't get a better performance with a newer card natually that will use DX9.x, etc. but for those of us that have and will use DX8.1 drivers for their cards will be fine :) Ta and Good Hunting!

If you're having trouble getting the demo running, please review the system requirements:

System Requirements

The minimum system requirements are as follows:

COMPUTER: IBM PC or 100% compatible
OPERATING SYSTEM: Microsoft™ Windows 98SE/2000/XP (95/NT not supported)
CPU: Intel Pentium® 4 1.3 GHz (or AMD Athlon ™ equivalent)
RAM: 256Mb
GRAPHICS: 100% DirectX 9.0 compatible 32 MB * (see below for support cards)
SOUND: Windows 98SE/2000/XP compatible Sound card (100% DirectX 9.x compatible)
CD-ROM: Quad-speed (4x) CD-ROM drive
HARD DRIVE: 2GB free disk space
INPUT DEVICES: 100% Windows 98SE/2000/XP mouse and keyboard

The recommended system requirements are as follows:

CPU: Intel Pentium® 4 1.5Ghz (or AMD Athlon™ equivalent)
RAM: 512 MB
GRAPHICS: 100% DirectX® 9.0 compatible 3D Card w/ 64 MB
SOUND: Windows 98SE/2000/XP compatible Sound card (100% DirectX® 9.x compatible)
CD-ROM: Eight-speed (8x) CD-ROM drive or faster.
HARD DRIVE: 2GB free disk space

* Supported Chipsets – nVidia GeForce 3Ti/4Ti/Fx (MX series not supported). Radeon 8500/9XXX or higher. (Pixel/Vertex shader required)

If your system does not meet the minimum requirements, especially for video and sound cards, the game will not run on your system.

I do have the minimum hardware!

I will be pruning/locking threads which ask questions answered by referring to the sytem requirements.

I do have the latest ati video drivers(within 24 hours)!
I do have the latest via sound drivers(within 24 hours)!
I do have the latest directX(within 24 hours)!

I am really annoyed after posting as much information as possible(in an earlier post) and the fact I am running supported hardware(according to the minimum specs) there has yet to be a response.

The game has just gone gold, and I am wondering how many other radeon 9000 users are going to get shafted when they buy the full game and find it doesn't work(just like the demo)?

I have tried to use the official support webpages, but the product isnt even listed.

yeah, why the decision to require a video card with pixel shader capabilities? Hopefully Ion Storm will make that an option instead. The reason I ask is because it makes no sense to me. Although making for better visuals, it really limits who will buy the full game. Sorry for posting this outside of the demo technical thread, but I feel that there were posts about it but noone really resolved it (as far as I could see). Can't find any info on the error anywhere, and it's nothing I've ever heard of. If anyone knows anything about it, please post

Actually, Jovena posted a possible fix for this in this thread. ;)

Give it a shot.

Hey... I installed the demo with no problems and when I try to get it going it gives me this:

"Engine requires video card with pixel shader 1.1 or greater"

now the problem seems to be pretty self explanitory but I have no clue what Pixel Shader 1.1 is or how to get it. I have downloaded every upgrade I can think of and am getting a little miffed, seeing that I have been drooling over the release of this game for so long. If you are getting the following message when you try to start a new game then read below:
"Your PC doesn't have enough free space to start a new game. 'L-Mouse' to return to the menu or 'ESC' to exit Deus Ex: Invisible War."
My issue was that I had previously re-routed the "My Documents" folder on my computer to another computer on my home network. When the game installed it put some of the files in this folder on the other computer, causing the above error when I tried to start a new game. I uninstalled the demo, set the "My Documents" folder back to the default target location, re-installed the demo, and it works now.

It's not just you, SilentFox. I've got the exact same problem. I can see the startup movies and the load screen without any trouble, and the menu screen does fine until I start moving the mouse around. I can usually move the mouse for around five to ten seconds (and once, I got lucky enough to actually start the game), but then it locks up hard. Once locked, it won't respond to Alt-Tab or Ctrl-Alt-Delete. I have to physically reboot the machine to get out of the lock.

For the hundredth time know. And I'll repeat it AGAIN. The developers, months and months before the demo release said specifically that the game NEEDS pixel shaders for shadow effects etc. So you NEED at least a radeon 8500 or Gef 3 (Gef4 mx is crap, = Gef2mx pumped up).

I;ve never had issues with other games or demos so I don't know what the deal is. I tried updating my graphics drivers, no go. BTW I have an Nvidia Geforce 4 MX, which in the readme is "unsupported." Open the Default.ini file in the System folder where you installed the demo.

locate the "MouseLagThreshold=" command line, and change the number after the equal sign to 0 instead of whatever it is.

This stops the mouse from lagging, but won't stop it if it is the video card thats causing it, please check out the modding the demo thread from the ion storm forums if your looking for more answers.

In case anyone doesn't know yet, I found a foolproof solution to the -5002, -6002, -6003 errors. Instead of downloading the gamespy fileplanet version, go to gamespot instead and download their version. It bypasses the whole wise installation program and you can just extract the setup files, and everything works fine from then on.

Good luck all.

ASUS V9950 GeForce FX 5900 Ultra 256Mb

DX 9.0b
Forceware 52.16
Windows XP SP1

The game looks alot like Quake II when it comes to light. A wierd brownish light that covers everything. Oh the memories. Textures looks a bit better. Half-Life 1 I believe. Human Models look like they are directly imported from the original Unreal Tournament 1. Deus Ex 1 looks almost better than this game, I can still remember the polished floors.

Forget pixel shaders. I could see no use of Pixel shaders anywhere.

I have blue 'flashing' artifacts on the screen, that looks like they are streaming from text in bottom of the screen.

The HUD covers most of the screen, so I can frankly not see much.

Resolution keeps resetting to 640x480.

There is no "put away weapon" key. You have to go all the way up to the 1-6 buttons and press the right key if you wish to remove the weapon.

After deinstalling and reinstalling the game once, the game now refuses to start at all.

And finally, the game runs terribly slow, even at 1280x1024 without FSAA. I could play through the entire Unreal Tournament 2003 in 1940x1440 full AF and yet keep myself above 30fps all the time, but this game? no.

Got my keyboard settings to stick after removing protection on user.ini

I can install the demo and load it up fine, but when I goto start a new game I complete the character selection bit, get to the loading screen and - nothing. It just stays on that loading screen until I end up restarting the computer. The Windows pointer is active and I can move it about which is a little wierd.

Can someone please help me so that I can actually play the game and then start complaining about graphics problems.

I'm running:

AMD Athlon 3000
512mb Ram
Radeon 9800 Pro
Audigy PCI
Windows XP

Cheers in advance

I cannot believe how many people are fooled into believing that MX is actually a card suitable for playing games...

MX was always advertised as a frigid Office card to use with "applications" and "browsing the internet"... It isnt even on par with the "mainstream gamer" cards.

I have some experience with MX, I have one in my office computer for example, and good lord thoose card sucks. They are as fast as shot monkeys! Even the slowest gaming card run in circles around them.

I really beg to differ. Max Payne 2 is running at 1026x800 (something like that) and its running great. Splinter Cell ran soldily. Hitman 2 ran with no glitches. Even Metal Gear Solid 2 ran perfectly. My buddy at the CIA tells me to get the nForce3 Go150, however, I wanted to ask for an opinion before I place an order.

I've also had an mx440 and I can tell you that it sucks big monkey ballz. But I can tell you're lying, there is no way you can run Splinter Cell at 1024x768, high details (which is solid imo) and get an acceptable frame rate. I've not even mentioned turning on FSAA and AF yet either...

This stops the mouse from lagging, but won't stop it if it is the video card thats causing it, please check out the modding the demo thread from the ion storm forums if your looking for more answers.

Hwarang.

I adjusted the threshold to zero. This was about 90% effective...yet there is still a slight mouse lag . Is this a feature of the game? It even exists with LOWEST settings. I had a look in that thread but found no further help.

Edit: In fact, everthing has a slight lag, from jumping to shooting. Nothing is at the press of any button. Whats the story?

I had the exact same problem and was searching for a thread a while back explaining how to fix it but couldn't find it...

here's what I did though:

1. Start --> Run
2. type in msconfig
3. go to the startup tab
4. click disable all. yes, disable ALL.
5. apply --> ok
6. restart comp
7. attempt to install again.

i don't know why I had to do this or why you do either, but it's annoying and i've never had to do it for any other game/demo before.

Hey guys, I need some technical support here. I can't play the demo. Ever since it came out, I've had to go to my friend's house all the time and play at his place. Whenever I load it, it comes to the loading screen before the main menu, and then it just exits to the desktop. I don't know what's wrong. I have a nearly brand new Sony VAIO, so I'm pretty sure it should work. Here are my system specs:

2.6 GHz Processor
512 RAM
Standard Video and Sound Cards (I don't know how to get the names for them... I'm a computer illiterate. Can anyone help me find how?)
40 gigs of space

Someone please give me a hand here. I'm getting desperate. I don't want to get the final product if the demo doesn't even work. Thanks.

Hi everyone... ARGHHH i've had the worst time trying to get the Deus Ex 2 demo to run properly. What happens is, it starts up fine, but when I get to the start game options screen with the DX logo in the middle, the edges of the screen light up in some weird mishmash of inverse colors and it's all mixed up, like very bright and basic hues... it makes the game unplayable and I haven't figured anyway around this.

Now, the first few animated logo graphics like the Nvidia one look fine... up to the Loading screen with the bar... and then when it finally does load and get to that screen, it looks like a flaming 8-bit volcano or something, weird stuff! And when I try to blindly go to the New Game screen and start a new game, all in game graphics are affected the same way :(

The sound sounds fine, the mouse and everything seems to respond right ,but the colors are all muxed up and . .

It's becoming too time consuming - I've already uninstalled and reinstalled both Nvidia newest 52.16 drivers, as well as DirectX 9.0b... and it did not work. My specs are as follows

P4 2.4 GHz
Nvidia Ti4200
512 megs of RAM
120 gig hard drive (not that that makes a diff)
Soundblaster Audigy 2

The original DX and other recent games work fine. I had this problem also awhile ago actually with Hitman (also from Eidos) but somehow it went awya after awhile. i have no idea what's going on :(

Please help, I'm anxious to try this demo for myself. THanks so much!! :D

Does this (http://bizrate.com/,mpd__cat_id--461,prod_id--7023655,rf--wgg.html) look like your computer? That says it has a Geforce4 MX card, and MX cards aren't supported, so you won't be able to play it.

To check for sure, go to Start->Run, type dxdiag and go to the Display tab. It should show your video card name there. If it's an MX card, you're out of luck. :(

ok folks, apologies if this has been covered already but....

from what i can see on the posts, dx:iw works pretty well for those with nvidia cards (ti4200 upwards really), but those with ati cards, eg the readeon 9600 pro (not tooo shabby a card) are showing poor performance.

What i'm wondering is, from what i can see, dx:iw is designed to run better with nvidia cards, much in the same way ati cards will run better on HL2. So, should i expect the same trouble you radeon owners are having now with dx:iw, when I play HL2 (i have a ti4400). If thats the case, it's a bit ****ty that folks like us shell out a couple of hundred quid (or dollars) to buy a really good graphics card, but then when we try to play the latest games, a lot depends on which manufacturer you have bought?????

It wasn't always this way was it? I mean, you used to be able to buy ati or nvidia or whoever, and as long as you had the latest card you were fine. Now, even if you buy a £200 nvidia card, it's no guarentee to run that well with , eg, HL2, but a £150 ati card will?

I think it's pretty ridiculous......anyone else agree??

Le`Sauveur`De`Ces`Dames
28th Nov 2003, 15:27
I'm sure there is a secret conspiracy between ATI and nVIDIA, to force you to buy both cards, in order to play both games...

that would axplain a lot, actually

Freddo

The Radeons are better. The DX:IW doesn't like the Catalyst 3.8 drivers.

From the demo readme:
2. ATI specific
a. The Deus Ex: Invisible War Demo will not run properly on ATI cards using the Catalyst 3.8 drivers. We specifically do not support these drivers with the demo. Running the demo while using these drivers will cause graphical corruption in-demo, and eventually will cause a crash.
b. While the demo will run properly on the 3.7 drivers, we strongly recommend updating to the Catalyst 3.9 drivers on the ATI site.

XsNrG
28th Nov 2003, 17:10
The problems ati users are having with the demo is more driver issues than poor performance (alot of ati users i know cant even run it as the display is all corrupt)

Its not really a fault of any thing xcept a buggy demo.

As to the whole ati v nvidia thing, both card manufactures cards handle stuff in different ways.

Apparantly, the new GeforceFx 5700 ultra is outperforming the eqivalent Ati (9600) in a lot of things, but the ati is still better at others...e.g.ati's seem better at rendering stuff like pixel shading and the fancy stuff thats comming out with DirectX 9. Whereas Nvidias still seem to be outperforming equivalent Ati's in OpenGL, and are now getting an edge on directX 8 applications.

Theres been an improvement now in the directX9 stuff over the first batch of geforceFX's, but i think they are still trying to suss out how to render the stuff right.

HL2 can be run in modes that support directx 9 + 8, so u dont nessecarrily need a top of the range ati card, its just it would seem, atm, ati's cards are rendering something like half life 2, in the directx 9 support mode, better.

Its all swings and roundabouts tbh.

I can't post this in the technical reports thread because it will get swallowed by the 312841 posts about cards without pixel shaders. My card has pixel shaders.

When I start a new game in the demo, I can stand around for a while and it doesn't crash. All works nice until I walk forward a little and get that message telling me what to do in the demo. After the message and the datavault thing comes up, it crashes almost every time. The few times it doesn't, it crashes when I hit the esc key to go to the menu or when the next hint or datavault comes up.

ATI Radeon 9600 SE
Athlon 2000+ XP
Directx 9.0b
Catalyst 3.9 drivers

I did what you told me with the dxdiagnostic. Thanks for that tip, Random. New relevant information that my directx is 9.0, and under my display tab in the "device" box, it says that the name of my "device" is Intell 82865G Graphics Controller. I'm not sure if that's the video card, but it would seem it is. I did all the tests for DirectDraw and Direct3D, and they worked. Not sure if that last bit is relevant, but I'll still put it on anyway. If anyone has any advice/solution, it's greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hey all. I dl-ed the demo for DX: IW, and everything worked beautifully, even with all the drool on my keyboard, until i started the game. The entire screen was black, with random colored flashes, but nothing is visible! I can walk around, i just dunno where the f*** i'm going. the light aug doesnt help, so its not just cause its dark. Eventually, i thought of using the nightvision aug, and that worked!!! but i can only see things with nightvision engaged. with it off there is nothing. sure you can interact with stuff, pick things up if you can find them, but you can't see. This is confusing the hell out of me, andkilling me too since i preordered the game.

If i can't get this demo working... i don't think i can buy the game either, so I really really reallly really need help! Thanks to all and everyone who replies in advance.

PS I picked the demo up off fileplanet, does that make a difference?

I have had both I was a dedicted Nvidia fan untill I recently purchased a ATI Radeon 9600. And you know what I love this card as well! The plain and simple fact that I can see anyway looking at compairasons of the cards is that Nvidia will run some games Unreal, Quake etc (I don't know exactly which ones) better then ATI and ATI will run the others better then Nvidia.

So unless you buy games specificly suited for your card there are times the card you don't have will be the one you wish you had!

Unless of course you can afford to run both video cards on your system..now that could be interesting, if even possible! :)

Btw I have a ATI Radeon 9600 128agp and it runs the demo great at 1024x768-32. So perhaps people having card issues either ATI or Nvidia perhaps need to tweek their settings a little?
Just because 1 type of card won't run it don't make it crap, systems also play a factor in how well the overall game plays!

1. Never buy a brand name, your ripping yourself off.

2. Never let your mom/dad pick your computer.

3. Dump XP if you can, especially if it's the home version. Use win2000 instead, it's way less bloated and doesn't have dogs telling you how to search for files.

4. Right click on the desktop and select "properties" from the drop down menu. Select the "settings" tab. At the bottom it should tell you what your running on ie. "Samsung sync master 755df on xxxxxx". The xxxxxx is the video card. If your not on at least a geforce4ti series, no go. You will have to buy a semi-real videocard(pixel shaders 1.1), I have a geforce ti4200 overclocked and this game runs fine after some .ini tweaks at 1024X768, you can pick one up for about $80. Less if you really look hard.

I hope this helps. As far as audio is concerned as long as it's soundblaster compatable or AC'97 combatable your fine (99.9% of the onboard sh_it sound has it)

System setup is a large (and largely ignored) part of performance. There are a lot of people who don't even update their drivers regularly, but even those who do don't always tune the system. They have too many other programs running, they leave old drivers in and just install new ones over the top, settings get changed in other programs and never put back where they should be. So, you can take two identical systems and get different performance results depending upon a lot of those factors.

Ok very simple, the keymapping doesnot save correctly. i have ot repeat the changes every time a new location is loaded.

Also i have a 9800 pro with latest drivers and i get bad glitches on the charater models which make them look like they are digitzed ala matrix exit. ( basically the vertices do not appear to be joined and as such i lose parts of the testures when rendered on screen).

Apart from that and the lack of a 3rd person mode, that is keymappable. and the dated graphics, it aint that bad.

well it is bad but better than waiting for hl2.

On a good note the bumpmapped wall are well done as in halo they tend to breathe with lighting and shadow changes.

Keep up the good worka dn get some better modellers in to redo the meshes. (See MAxpayne 2...Mona....i'd bone 'a.....)

over and out.
