You like PRAETORIANS because :

1 - it is a RTS game, nothing more.

2 - it is a "new style" RTS without ressource collecting.

3 - the "ROME theme"

Roman theme.

I'm a big fan of Roman games, and since there aren't many (that are good anyways) It was a breath of fresh air when I played the Praetorians demo (and why I bought it the day it came out)

I remember a while ago (8 years? I have no idea) when I played Caesar II to death, building cities and provinces and then fighting in those little combat simulators with elephants and such. I loved that game, and have missed it since (I think it ran on DOS so I don't get many chances to play it)

So with Praetorians, which is strictly combat and not city building, I am very happy with it. Rome is just a fun thing to play with.

Which is why I can't wait for Total War: Rome (or however you call it) to come out.

We "fully agreed" with each other cause we both like this game ;)
... and like Roman Empire's history too, I think.

But don't be afraid, if someday, I do not "fully agree" anymore, I would let you know ;)

I like it because
2 - it is a "new style" RTS without ressource collecting.

You dont hear that gay voices like "no food left","not enough resources" etc...
You just train your soldiers and send them to the heat of the war

it is like a RTS without the first 5 annoying minutes ...
almost 100% of the strategy focussed on battle...

yeah, I like that :)

I like it because it's a new type of RTS set in the Roman empire.

The Rome theme

and

The new style of RTS - especially the way you recruit a lot of men at once instead of individuals.

I love this game!!

The Roman theme is what made me try the demo... then the multi-demo... then I bought the game within the week.

What I REALLY REALLY like is that you win by devising better strategy and tactics, not by fooling the AI into being stupid like most RTS games.

And the resource management is just enough to give realistic limits to what an army can do, without bogging you down in cutting trees and upgrades, blah-di-dah. Don't get me wrong, I still like Rise of Nations etc (set it to begin and end in Classical Period for good Rome v Greece wars etc!!)

I think the military and historical realism of Praetorians is important - tactics work, auxiliary infantry are basically labourers with pila and some engineering skills, the Roman legions are more disciplined than the Barbarians, and the specialist units are not flaky demigod-like deathmachines so prevalent in other games.

To succeed, you need to appreciate real tactical issues:

a) how to build a balanced army suitable for each particular battlefield, mission, and enemy,
b) when, where and how to use the units, in combination or alone,
c) the importance of good scouting (scouts are cheap, but very valuable!),
d) the importance of experienced leadership (use your Centurions to best effect!)
e) maybe most importantly, how to USE THE TERRAIN
