View Full Version : Game freezing?

Area51

I have been trying to play the single player demo for this game, and the game keeps on freezing up my whole computer. It just randomly happens sometimes after 2 minutes, sometimes after 15 minutes, and my whole comp freezes up every time and I have to reboot. I have the newest video drivers, I tried both new and older sound drivers, I even tried disabling my sound card, but nothing has worked.

Specs:

Athlon XP 1500+ (1.33Ghz)
512mb pc2100 DDRAM
ATI Radeon 7200 video card (64mb)
Abit Kg-7 Mobo
Soundblaster live! Value soundcard

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, or if anybody knows anywhere else I could possibly find help on this. I don't have any problems like this with any other games. I really want to get the full version of this game because it looks like it has a lot of potential, but obviously I won't buy a game that is not going to work at all.

Hi !

and welcome to the forum:)

I have had the same problems, not with Praetorians but with other games.

Updating video drivers is not enough. You have to update the chipset drivers (not sure if it is the correct name??!!).

Try to get drivers for your AGP slot or some kind of "4in1" (if I remember correctly). That should work:)

The problem (which is mine too) is the mother board : Abit K7 series ....
(I have a K7A)

I have done it last month and now it works fine (praetorians and other games).

If you dont find the drivers "4in1" (I think that it would not be too difficult) ask me, I will find u the link:)

Once more, welcome to the community, welcome to Praetorians! :)
Best regards,
Shamaani

I totally forgot about updating the chipset, I'll check to see if there is an update, and thanks for the quick reply.

Another thing you can try :

in the BIOS,
change the "AGP Aperture".
You have 32Mb video RAM right ?
set it to 32 or 64...

Well, updated the chipset drivers, game still freezes, now I'll try the agp aperture trick, although i remember messing with that caused me problems with age of mythology, but I'll test it.

Well, changed AGP Aperture from 32 to 64 and.......still freezes. Dangit. Any other suggestions?

Try updating DirectX to 8.1b or 9 if you haven't already.

Got directx 9, guess it's time to chuck the comp out the window and start over

Area51,

Can you run DxDiag, save the information and post the dxdiag.txt file to the forum. Usually this can help people help you sort the problem.

Cheers,

A couple of weeks ago, someone mentioned the game wasn't working with a Radeon card. I don't know if they ever fixed it though. :( You might have to wait for a patch or newer drivers for the video card if no one else has any ideas.

Have u tried different drivers ... ?

this kind of error is a graphic card/driver error...
you should search in this way.

Well, after it happened the first couple of times, I downloaded the newest video drivers, and it still happened. Maybe I'll try some older drivers.

Hiya Area51,

I know you said that you have tried newer and older sound card drivers, but personally I had numerous problems using the older .3300 SB Live driver for Win XP, which your system has installed.

The one that presently gives me best results is the .3509 version, which I think is the current one.

Something else that gave me trouble with Praetorians under XP was not using the correct driver for my monitor. The default Plug and Play driver sometimes does not work to correctly report refresh rates, and installing the correct driver for the monitor on my XP test system fixed numerous crashes.

Also when installing video drivers, it is _really_ important to follow the instructions, which generally say something about Uninstalling the driver installed on the system before installing the new driver. If all else fails, completely remove and reinstall the current Radeon drivers...older versions had a problem with refreshing 2D applications (like Praetorians) and some versions of
ATI software from the past 9 months or so definately crash a few of our 2D games.

Area51
13th Mar 2003, 05:28
I had the newest soundcard drivers as I stated, and went back to old ones to see if it helped, and it didn't. I even disabled my soundcard and that didn't work. I am going to try the monitor driver suggestion. The thing that I don't understand is that the whole computer freezes up, and there is absolutely nothing I can do except reboot.

Grey Mouser you rule!! Upgrading monitor driver seems to have done the trick. Thanks. Although I am pissed off at you now because you just ruined any chance I had of studying for my upcoming test.

ok, I lied, it happened again. So I guess whatever I've done has just prolonged the inevitable crash. I was able to play for about a half hour this time, then I got a screen that looked like a rainbow through a prizm or some crap.

Intel and Nvidia and you would have no problems.....
In the future stay away from this stuff.

ATI has driver issues and Athlon AMD has heat issues....

Sell this junk.....

Dang! And here I was feeling all clever and stuff...

(Now now curtlegion...it really should work on Area51's system.)

I'll see if I can get ahold of a radeon 7200 sometime soon, and see how it does. It seems like a video-related problem, but at the moment I am out of ideas for you.

I am also experiencing problems with random freezing while playing Praetorians. I have purchased the full version and have the following system specs

Processor: AMD 950 MHZ
RAM: 512MB
Video: Geforce4 440 MX 128 MB
52X CD-ROM
Plug and Play Monitor
OS Windows ME

I read through the suggestions about chipsets, drivers and such, I have downloaded appropriate upgrades and will post again when I have tried all the suggestions in this thread.

Anyone else experiencing freezing problems? Any suggestions?

I also ended up getting the full version, and thought I had the problem fixed. I switched to a higher desktop resolution, and a higher monitor refresh rate, and that worked for a few days, but now I am stuck on the level where you defend the fort (all the gallic tribes, or something like that) and it keeps freezing every time I start the level.

I've updated every possible driver I could think of: mouse, video, sound, chipset, monitor. The thing that drives me nuts is that I don't think i've ever had a game lock up my entire computer every single time. It's one thing for the game to freeze or crash the computer, but not to completely 100% lock it up.

any others experiencing this yet? Just checking since the game is now available worldwide

I am getting the 100% lockup of the system that Area 51 is experiecing. I have tried the following since my last post

1. Reinstalled the following drivers

Sound card
Video Card (geforce4 440 MX 128mb)
Media Player

2. I also tried using DirectX 8.1 instead of Direct X 9

3. Tried running the game on windows 2000 (same pc)

I had some success here. I was able to view cutscenes with windows 2000 where I was unable to with Windows ME. I have also noticed that with the Geforce 4 440 MX card (with the new drivers) I am unable to view any cutscenes in any game that uses directX.

4. Tried increasing my AGP apeture in the bios to match the amount of memory on my video card.

Is my video card bad? Should I send it back, I just bought it about 2 weeks ago.

I doubt it's your video card, because I have an ATI Radeon 7200, so it probably isn't the video cards. I'm using Win XP. Jeez, I can't really see anything that we have in common on our systems. This is getting frustrating.

Maybe as a last ditch effort you could format your computer. This sometimes fixes things but most of the time it just eats your time up having to reinstall everything.

My friend was having this problem during a lan. The game would run for about 10-15 minutes and then it would freeze. He thinks it might be his video card and processor overheating. He rearranged his case fans and now he can play 1 out 3 full games without it freezing. He's buying a new heatsink for his AMD processor. I'll let you know if it fixes things.

I put in a different video card and I don't have freezing problems anymore

So what graphics card did you end up with to get the game to work?

sjackson

It is an older card, an old Diamond Stealth Viper V770 16MB card.
The driver shows up as NVIDIA RIVA TNT2/TNT2 PRO I used the newest Nvidia drivers as well. I also tried an old Voodoo 3 3000 16mb card and had considerable difficulty with that card, the game would crash everytime the game was run and cause 100% lock up.

:) I started off with a 9700pro but gave up because it kept making my games crash to the desk top, put my old Gforce 4 back in and all fine. Playing games is damm expensive on the pocket having to buy new graphics cards all the time.......

can you give me a list of the processes that are runing. If you press ctrl-alt-delete go to the processes tab and list all runing processes before runing the game. Also if you right click on the desktop select properties and turn off any screen saver. then right click on the pratorians shortcut select properties, compatibility and run the prog in win 98 compatibility mode.

Just to add to the list, I have a SB Live Digital running the latest drivers and a nVidia GeForce 3 running the latest drivers. I do get hard lockups every now and then that require a reset button. Seems to be sound related to me, not graphics related. Out of the 200+ games I own, this is one of about 5 that has this problem so it most certainly is not my machine (the other 195 titles work perfectly!)

I have the same occasional lockups as Mr.Frag with an SBLive! card and a GF3, running on Win98. The lockups are only very occasional and I save fairly often, so it's not a big problem. I had the same problem in the demo too. Since getting the full version, it's probably locked up about 3 or 4 times in total.

Yeah, I too have a SB Live!, but I uninstalled the card from the device manager, and then tried the game, but it still froze. Yes, the card was still physically installed inside the comp, so maybe that might be it. Looks like no driver issue will save this damn sound card.
