Sorry for being off-topic, I didn't know where else to post this.

Anyway, Square Enix showed off a tech demo today using its Luminous Studio engine (The same one whose lighting will be used in Versus XIII), and... oh my lord. The thing is absolutely stunning.

Click here for the YouTube link. (http://youtu.be/UVX0OUO9ptU)

from FourPlay Games (/go/thread/create/139235/234893/Despite%20the%20engine%20largely%20being%20developed%20by%20Square%20Enix%20Japan,%20the%20company%20reached%20out%20to%20overseas%20companies%20such%20as%20Eidos%20Montreal,%20IO%20Interactive,%20and%20Crystal%20Dynamics%20to%20share%20technology.%20The%20engine%20supports%20features%20such%20as%20procedural%20animation,%20high-quality%20lighting,%20and%20higher%20details%20in%20objects.%20In%20addition%20to%20consoles,%20the%20engine%20can%20also%20be%20used%20in%20applications%20for%20smartphones,%20computers,%20and%20on%20the%20internet.):
Despite the engine largely being developed by Square Enix Japan, the company reached out to overseas companies such as Eidos Montreal, IO Interactive, and Crystal Dynamics to share technology. The engine supports features such as procedural animation, high-quality lighting, and higher details in objects. In addition to consoles, the engine can also be used in applications for smartphones, computers, and on the internet.

Do you think it would be OK to open a feedback thread?

OK, so I've watched it at least once. As usual, the advances in technology in terms of how much closer to photo-realistic these graphic engines are getting these days contunue to surprise me.

I do hope they really put this to some good (and profitable) use in the future.

Loved it. I still can't believe it was all in real time though. I mean that girl (Agni?) looks so realistic... her eyes, skin texture... wow! If they have graphics like these in real time, they could probably do away with pre rendered cinematics, or alteast reduce it to save space on the disc, which can then be used to create a bigger game in general (meaning a bigger 3D world to explore etc).

I also really liked that piece of music at the end. Does anyone know what it is? Or is a custom made?

My first thoughts/impressions when I saw them show up was, "Call of Duty? In my Final Fantasy? GTFO, Square Enix."

Then again, Square Enix has production/distrubution rights for Call Of Duty in Japan, so...

These tech demos are the only thing Square Enix manages to finalize and release nowadays, so it seems (over 6 years and no Versus XIII, KHIII)...

I'm becoming more and more upset with Square Enix at this rate. They are getting more and more lazy, feeding us the same recycled garbage/clones/spinoffs/filler games again and again. I really want to see some new IPs. Is that too much to ask of SE? Is it because Sakaguchi left, along with Uematsu and a good amount of other original creators for SE?

The only money Square Enix is getting from me at this point is for my FFXI account (which I am tempted to cancel), and Final Fantasy X HD. After that, chances are I'm done waiting for nothing.

This looks like a concept to be made for a game, coinciding with the release of games like Final Fantasy Versus XIII. They just need to concentrate on Versus XIII at the moment. They should make this into a game, though. Pretty interesting to see what it's like.

I'd take his over Final Fantasy Versus XIII to be honest. I know it's only a tech demo, much worse than a trailer, but the environment seemed very interesting and it looked nice. I thought that it would've looked a lot more realistic than this but I guess I had my expectations too high too soon.

Oh, and I don't think the same people who made this demo were the same people who are making Versus XIII. I think in the end you only see few names of people unrelated to the Versus XIII development.

eu.square-enix.com/en/blog/e3-2012-agnis... (http://eu.square-enix.com/en/blog/e3-2012-agnis-philosophy-luminous-tech-demo)

"On the Tuesday evening at the end of Day 1 we invited all the press and media to come round to our both for a special after hours presentation. Hosted by Square Enix America and Square Enix Japan, they revealed the power of Luminous Studio, our in-house engine designed specifically with next-gen in mind. It's built to be powerful and efficient so that you get the maximum out of our games. The presentation showed how at any point they could stop, make changes (such as giving the old-man green dreadlocks) and the carry on the demo in realtime; all very impressive stuff.

We have the full presentation recorded and will be putting it up soon. Remember, this is all rendered in real-time. Also, don't forget, this is a technology demonstration, not a game. You can find out more on www.agnisphilosophy.com (http://www.agnisphilosophy.com)."

It's interesting to me, that if this wasn't meant to be developed into a game.... then why did they put of survey asking if we liked the character? What's the point of asking that, if there is zero chance of it being made into a game? I don't get it...

For the same reason that Quantic Dream made the Kara tech demo (www.youtube.com/watch?v=G0KTUysrwgQ (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G0KTUysrwgQ)). Proof of concept, and to show what they are capable of doing. In the case of Agni's Philosophy, showing what their new real time engine is capable of doing.

And in the case of Agni's Philosphy, it is simply breath-taking.

And in response to Gaialei_Strife, the point of a real time engine is that it requires less processing than pre-rendered. So, I would imagine that the current PS3, Vita, or even XBox could run it efficiently.

Makes me wonder about that FFVII Tech Demo that caused a lot of attention in 2006. Wonder if they were showing off XIII's engine or the one their using for Versus XIII?

As far as the survey goes, I put a 5 on everything other than the heroine/Agnis. She looks too normal for a Final Fantasy. Maybe a different color for hair?

Its wondrous, but still its a tech demo and we won't see this kind of thing until the next generation of consoles from Microsoft and Sony are confirmed because all it is right now in that department it is just speculation, so nothing to really to speculate about this technical demo. Its the FFVII demo all over again it might or might not be made for the next generation of consoles. I did love the photo realism though of the characters and the textures are really amazing on said characters and so was the lighting :)

It was probably XIII's engine. There would've been more buzz if it were Versus XIII's.

Many Final Fantasy heroes don't really look weird if you look at them. Bartz, Terra, Squall, Vaan (or Ashe), and the Onion Knights (judging by their official art) don't look weird at all.

Excuse me, still trying to pick my jaw up off the floor. I didn't see, but did anyone happen to link the official site? agnisphilosophy.com/ (http://agnisphilosophy.com/)

Maybe, someday, eventually, Square can do something impressive without an overwhelming clamoring for Versus and VII remakes. To be honest, it's to the point - has been for a year or two - that hearing the word "Versus" just gets me annoyed, rather than excited, and I want the game as bad as anyone. Whatever anyone else has said, I'd recommend not cluttering their surveys, which are about the tech demo, with pointless babbling about how much you want a completely unrelated game. It's not even going to the right people. There are other ways to go about it.

Really, though, I'm stunned. The skin texture, the movement, everything, and that's not simple stuff to animate, with that level of detail. I really, really hope this makes it into a game eventually, because I love the look of the world. AND THAT MUSIC. I NEED IT. I NEED IIIIIT. Taking a look at the HD screenshots - particularly if you right-click them and view them fullsize after opening them - the level of detail for realtime is just amazing. Square never fails to disappoint visually.

It's beautiful. A real shame it probably won't ever turn into a real game. The fact that it was all in real time was amazing. Next gen consoles are going to be awesome.

I was thinking it was a little too much Call of Duty like at first. But a few terrorist looking guys with real guns doesn't make it CoD. Either way a mix of modern world and fantasy magic is cool. The potion in a Coke bottle was awesome xD

That's crazy. And it's taken them 6 years to make a nice trailer for Versus while they're pumping out XIII's right and left ( assuming there is going to be a XIII-3 ). Oh well, I'm not complaining. I enjoy the XIII series.

What I'm wondering about is if they use that for the next gen, how short are the games going to be? If I remember correctly in an interview, one of the head honcho at SE mentioned that one of the reasons XIII seemed so short, was because the graphics were really demanding (at that time). I'll dig the link up. I think it was about an FF VII remake thread. But if that's the case, will games be shortened due to powerful graphics that look life-like?

The video quality is amazing but I hope they make a couple major changes if they plan on making it a full game:
•change the title
•completely redo the character design for Agni (she looks weird and kinda plain at the same time)
•make sure they dont ***** up the story like in FFXIII-2

Agni’s Philosophy is rendered in real-time. (Yes, that makes it the same as gameplay.)

Randis
2nd Nov 2012, 11:20
It is a tech demo and not gameplay, there is a big difference.
In the actual game the is a LOT more data that has to be processed, collision, AI and so on and so on.
Also this is probably running on a highend computer while a retail game has to run on great variaty of systems.
A real time tech demo or benchmark is not to be confused with how things would really look in a game.

Grimoire
3rd Nov 2012, 06:54
It is nevertheless still rendered in real time by the Luminous Engine, which is intended for the next generation of consoles.

m.neogaf.com/showthread.php?t=498275&pag... (http://m.neogaf.com/showthread.php?t=498275&page=1)

Interview with Square-Enix's World Technological Director. Basically:

-Something "different" about Agni's Philosophy will be shown in June 2013 (E3?), on "something other than PC". Based on the guy's smile, it's clearly next-gen platforms.

-Lightning Returns: Development is quite advanced, they're currently showing it to focus groups to find out which element they should concentrate on to please fans. Also, he said that on a technological level, Versus XIII elements were used for this game. It will keep some elements from FFXIII/XIII-2 but will be quite different from every FF that's come out so far.

-Type-0: No plan as of now, but they'd like to localize it eventually. (same old news -.-)

-Versus XIII: Definitely still in development. The project is very, very ambitious according to this guy, and that is why it's taken so long. He says once the project will be fully revealed, people will be happy to have waited so long. Also, Yoichi Wada is determined to push the development team as far as they can.

-FFXIV: He praises Yoshida's direction of the project, says it will be "quite different" from the original FFXIV. He also says that people from S-E outside of Japan also believe in the project, that it's not a "Japan-only" thing (whatever that means).

-Asked what games he was eager to play, he said he was going to try out all the big open-world/sandbox games. He thinks "many Square-Enix IPs" would benefit from more openness, and from a storytelling that's less linear. He wants to take inspiration from games like GTA5 to be able to help the company achieve this on a technological level.

"Replying to a query regarding Agni’s Philosophy, Merceron replied: “Well, around June next year, there will indeed be something different around Agni’s Philosophy, which will perhaps be presented on platforms that are different from the ones being used so far. Asked what games he was eager to play, he said he was going to try out all the big open-world/sandbox games. He thinks "many Square-Enix IPs" would benefit from more openness, and from a storytelling that's less linear. He wants to take inspiration from games like GTA5 to be able to help the company achieve this on a technological level.

One thing I would like to comment on. Linear does not always equal bad. Open-world/Sandbox does not always equal good. Both have advantages and disadvantages. Last thing we need is for every game to be sandbox/openworld.

I've been hearing a lot that if Agni's Philosophy became a next-gen game, then it would be called Final Fantasy: Agni's Philosophy.

No. Just, no. Keep it as Agni's Philosophy.

Everything else is virtually old news to me.

the it wont be a japanese only thing ill try to explain what it means there are japanese developers that believe in giving japan certain content and dont give the rest of the world that content from his statement i think he means every region will get the exact same content as japan gets

its a practice that should be thrown away region exclusive content

I hope they make Agni’s Philosophy to game (FFXVI) for next gen console

Agni’s Philosophy is beautiful in graphics and music too characters is looked great i liked them, yes, even the hobo old man/tools/tiny_mce/plugins/emotions/img/smiley-cool.gif. and that world they showed us i liked it really.. more than FF13 series. heck more than any Final Fantasy.

its liked real world mixed with some fantasy.

This would be Square Enix future to make more sale to their game in (Europe/USA)

not like full japanese style ff series...

Its time to make this to a game finally a middle east style FF...

This would be DAY1 buy for me.

To be honest, I wasn't a huge fan of the machine guns. All of the other concepts presented in the demo were fantastic. I hope they create a world with a lot of South American influence (which is the vibe I get from the demo), because it's one of the few places that previous Final Fantasy titles haven't drawn architecture and mythology from.

As for Agni as a solitary character...I think they should see how the reception for Lightning Returns goes.

(whoo, first post! had to do it somewhere)

This is one of the many reason i done with Square Enix forever man Agnis Philosophy would be a fu*g great game they wasted a 1 year to develop this? and hire a singer for a techdemo they completly idiot...the characters and that big world and that mysic feeling about summoning its now completly lost, wasted, this is so shame and sad, crystal dynamics/EIDOS is a f***g great developers and they bring new games without them square enix would already died.Versus 13 should released for PS3 because of graphics its like a half PS4 game and Agnis Philosophy would have been nice for PS4,now FFXV is getting sequels like FF13 was.And i do not understand that big hype about ffxv i don'T even liked this ffxv its not impressed me at all,Akira Iwata,Brian Horton,Brenoch Adams,Takeshi Nozue and the others is deserve a chance to prove what they can do with FF world. Even EA is better gamecompany than square enix, enix is the worst of the worst imo.

Hello i would gladly see what happen if EIDOS/Crystal Dynamics cooperate with japanese developers make one FF title to be MULTIPLATFORM game PS4/PC/XBOXONE with Luminous engine power and that would be Agnis Philosophy or renamed to VERSUS final fantasy or something like that the battle between 2 game developers who can make better FF game (FF15 or FF game from Crystal Dynamics) WHO knows maybe Crystal D. can make better FF titles than Square enix.IMO OR Square enix maybe should rest a little and give FF title to Crystal D.Or cooperate with them, then years later Square enix JAPAN would be back to make another great FF title.Well this is my idea just a advice to square enix japan i know lot people would angry if this happen but yet another group of people would be happy or see what happens like me.

I getting tired of this FF game sequels i KNOW FF15 isn't released yet but we know FF15 going to be trilogy and this make me worry.Because i really liked FF13-1 game and after that the story was just became worse. Not to mention FF15 is still fabula nova crystallis and HAVE some connection to Lightning return or FF13-2.

Shepard30
24th Mar 2014, 15:02
What your saying is great idea and it makes sense. But that's exactly why square enix wouldn't do it. They're just far too incompetent to do anything that makes sense. So get ready for more hastily made FF sequels. The only way to save SE is to just not buy the games they make they deserve and SE did this to them selves. If you love Final Fantasy then don't buy Lightening Returns and X/X2 HD.

After we saw from FF15 Sports car,no chocobo, modified version of real cities etc.. FF15 is the most realistic FF game right now, i think this rate agnis philoshopy would a be a great game too, its looks interesting world, characters.
