View Full Version : The Maya Constellation of Orion

Since the last Path of the Stars puzzle confirmed that the constellation being pieced together was in fact Orion, I decided to do a little digging into what exactly this star cluster could have to do with SOTTR.

Orion is a prominent constellation located on the celestial equator and visible throughout the world. It is one of the most conspicuous and recognizable constellations in the night sky. Because of its prominence, cultures all around the world have given special significance to Orion.

While we name this constellation after the Greek Myth of Orion, a giant huntsman whom Zeus placed among the stars, the Ancient Mayans would look at this star cluster and see something quite different.

The Maya of Mesoamerica envision the lower portion of Orion, his belt and feet (the stars Saiph and Rigel), as being the hearthstones of creation, similar to the triangular three-stone hearth that is at the center of all traditional Maya homes. The Orion nebula, lying at the center of the triangle, is interpreted by the Maya as the cosmic fire of creation surrounded by smoke. I also found on a book I have about the Maya Civilization that they had a Turtle constellation described in their texts and that it has been associated with Orion. Knowing this, I did some digging and found this article (http://www.academia.edu/32300868/Not_Just_Any_Turtle_The_Maya_Constellation_of_Orions_Belt)that discusses said turtle constellation and its integration into the First Hearth.

The Orion Turtle and the First Hearth

According to this paper, this celestial turtle is an avatar of Itzamnaaj (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Itzamna), who was, in Maya mythology, the name of an upper god and creator deity thought to reside in the sky. Classic period inscriptions state that Itzamnaaj was an agent in the creation of the three-stone hearth. Itzamnaaj is known to have turtle manifestations in Classic art. As such, the paper concludes that the Orion turtle represents Itzamnaaj in the act of creation of the First Hearth.

So, as a reward for the Path of the Stars Puzzle #4 we got this audio file (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8zwKxOcNwgs) where Jonah says that Trinity is after a Creation God. Might it be related to this Itzamnaaj and his celestial turtle?

In any case, if none of this turns out to be relevant, I still hope we get to see something like this in the nightsky of the game:
