One day all games will look like this computer generated image:

Nice image.:)

Maybe one day, but not any time soon. I believe that image was generated by ray tracing using a very good rendering algorithm - a computationally intensive task. Modern games use rendering techniques that fake it, so they are lots faster. OK, algorithms will catch up, but the trade-off is always that games are interested in complexity and real time simulation, not the perfect rendering of a static image. Thus, we have real time motion, the animation of facial expressions, etc. Not to mention the physics of motion, collisions, and sound. So, games and hardware designers will make many tradeoffs to achieveve the complexity in real time.

I can't wait until they look like this. :D

I should have made my post more complete. That image may have taken an hour to generate. In games you want 1/60 second. That's a factor of 216,000 by itself. And, the image does not have to contend with the physics of moving objects. Maybe another factor of 10? So, we need a factor of 2 million in computing power. Quantum computing may be the answer.:)

Peter, you are so right!

Raytracing takes a long time.

Still, would you have expected todays effects 20 years ago?

Nice image but *sigh* booooring! Gimmie R-Type on the Spectrum any day. :D

I wanted to be flying around in spaceships be now, dodging black holes and stuff! But instead I’m wondering if my current systems going run T3’s real-time shadows smoothly. Awesome render BTW anyone know what software produced it?

Here's the web-site the image came from:

Sigh…..I’d love to be able to afford Studio Max :( such an amazing program. Oh well, I’ll have to stick with Vue d’Esprit 4 for abit of ray tracing action :) Thanks for the link, so many talented artists out there!

graphics in that picture Zaccheus..I agree with Gumdrop...boooring and so sanitized :( No life to it...it's just there with no personality :( I hope I never see it in my games! But then by the time they get to that point...gamers will think that's really somethin...? Ta and Good Hunting!

Hey, a nice site. Look what I found there. A Troll (http://raph.com/3dartists/artgallery/oliver_rohe1.jpg). Might be needed for future reference. :D

Attack of the Mutant Camels still kicks butt! I played it on my emulator before I installed XP, and them level jumps are still the coolest ending/transitions in the bizz! :)

Yeah Manic Miner was my religeon for a time, but come on geeks...Blagger was the better game. :p

You're right though RiCh...Stop it!

I was thinking about the quality, not the content !!!

Ok, so it's a boring ikea room with bright lighting. So what?

I love the fact that you have to look twice before seeing it's not a photo. That's all.
sigh.

When Thief 16 comes out, I'm sure it will look all dark and spooky, moody and mysterious, but can you imagine if it had that kind of photo realism!
Wow.

This would be a good Thief game scene if the sign and A/C unit were removed. Click here to see (http://raph.com/3dartists/artgallery/torbjorn_olsson1.jpg)

I could also see Garrett finding this attic. Click here to see (http://raph.com/3dartists/artgallery/frank_lenhard1.jpg)

And this is the perfect haunted graveyard scene. Click here to see (http://raph.com/3dartists/artgallery/kornel_ravadits1.jpg)

Wow, the renders on that site are unbelievable! I hope some of these 3D artists are working in the games industry!

I'd actually like to see Thief with a nonphotorealistic style, but very advanced. Sorta like those movies with lots of color filtering that almost look SURreal.

Games are heading in the right direction, though, that's for sure--lighting is becoming a big focus for games and 3D hardware, and the main reason most of those renders look so believable is because of new lighting techniques. Mainly HDRI, or High Dynamic Range Images, which are used to capture the full light spectrum from real scenes and apply them to computer renders.

I agree about the graveyard
See the top of the fence? How nice and pointy it is? Like your hair standing on end? That's what the hair on the back of my neck did when I saw it. Chilling.........:D
Detail man, gimme detail. Looks awesome. Can I go and play? Like...NOW!!
