Welcome to our twenty-second monthly* official TR forums exclusive developer Questions & Answers session!

We're holding one of these Q&A sessions every month* on this forum, where you guys can direct your burning questions to the dev team. During each session, the 5 best questions will be picked out by Meagan Marie and answered by a CrystalD crew member. Just a few conditions:

- Maximum 2 questions per member per Q&A session.

- Read all already answered questions in our official FAQ threads (http://forums.eu.square-enix.com/tags.php?tag=official+tr+faq+thread) before posting. We don't want questions which are already answered!

- Until answers are posted, no off topic in this thread. Only posts containing questions for the devs. For everything else, use the Humble Abode thread (http://forums.eu.square-enix.com/showthread.php?t=96641).

- Post only intelligent, well thought-out questions which are articulate, clear and to the point.

Example...

Good:

I really loved the music in the Turning Point trailer. Will it be the Main Theme of the game?

2. Will there be a level/hub set in an urban space ? ( This applies to both Rise and future titles )

1) Will there be a type of mythical/supernatural enemy/force in the game?

2) If you had to choose one thing that puts Rise down in history, what would that be and why?

Can you tell I'm running out of questions :p

#1 How will Jonah feature in the game; will he work side-by-side with Lara (even perhaps as a co-op character ala Resident Evil 5) OR as a casual encounter as seen in TR9?

#2 Square Enix recently released a small questionnaire to ask the fans of the JC series; what kind of goodies they'd like to see in the collectors edition of JC3. Will you be doing one of those for Rise anytime soon?

2. Is Lara going to be completely alone (no humans at all) for some time at some point in the game?

Not expecting an answer, but asking on principle:

Is there a place for Playstation and PC in the company's vision for Tomb Raider, now and in the future?

It's difficult to come up with any other questions considering the ones that we actually want to have answered :/

So Tomb Raider is the top selling game in franchise history- How do you expect the sequel to do while limiting the variety of consoles it will be sold on?

Do you (CD/or SE employees) keep up with fan comments on Facebook, the forums, and other various outlets? Are we at least heard?

I would love to know if you're planning to make adjustments to the amount of ammo that you can gather. In the last game I didn't like the fact that I could find lots of ammo everywhere I go. I don't remember ever being out of ammo. In a game with a theme and a setting like this, where there're few resources, we should feel the need to save ammo and think about smart ways to finish the enemy, like stealth kills. I think at least the hard mode should have something like that and not just tougher enemies.

1. Im really excited about the mova technology and how it will look during cutscenes. Can you give any info on when we can see that?

1. Is Lara's character model the same as in 2013 Tomb Raider, If not, why did it change?
2. The 2013 game had hints on what buttons to press during actions like grabbing a ledge or things you could light on fire and other things. Will there be options to turn these off in ROTTR

1. Will ROTTR feature multiple outfit options for Lara to be included in the core game design (so NOT DLC), either as mission/level start up options, or unlockables for replay?

2. Will we see a more open world for this game, or non-connected hubs again?

1, We've learned Lara will be travelling to Siberia in RotTR, as well as a brief mention of a mysterious oasis, if you can't yet reveal where else Lara will be visiting, can you at least tell us how many countries Lara will visit?

2, Tomb Raider 2013 had some nice camcorder backstory featuring the crew prior to the wreck of the Endurance. Can we expect something similar in Rise, that show Lara and Jonah (and perhaps other side characters) prior to the adventure?

1. We heard that TressFX have been upgraded, it will only be avaliable in Lara or in other characters to? Tip: Final Fantasy has a amazing hair technic + it's from Square Enix, I think can Crystal use that.

2. The studio and Microsoft and AMD are working very hard in the game which is amazing, the game will get all Xbox One have to offer, does the game will be released in DirectX 12? And will use differents API in Xbox 360/One version?

1. A lot of posts have said that CD signed the exclusivity deal through not caring about large sections of the TR community so do you feel this viewpoint is inaccurate/unfair?

2. Will we get the chance in the game to fight alongside Jonah at any point in ROTTR?

You people should understand that your questions about the Deal won't get answered. Sounds harsh, but it had to be said since all I'm seeing are those kind of questions on every single Q&A so far.

My question:
Is it safe to discuss Lara's range of movement at this point? I'd like to know if she is going to have some gymnastics abilities in the future games. :)

I've moved the last 6 OT posts to the dedicated xbox deal thread http://forums.eu.square-enix.com/showthread.php?t=146569&p=2119710#post2119710

1. I think the media for relic run look amazing and I would to know if some of the elements from it like classic outfit choice and the acrobatics will filter across to ROTTR?

2. The PS and PC communities show loads of enthusiasm for ROTTR but does this deal mean CD have lost some enthusiasm for us?

I know that Nixxes is handling the 360 version of the game so I don't know if this can be answered but:

1.) Can 360 users expect the hub areas to be as large, dense, and/or interactive as the Xbox One counterpart?

If this can't be answered then I would also like to know:
2.) Due to the increased size of hubs, can we expect collectible and secret items to be more plentiful?
(Not that they weren't in the previous installment)

1) How is the setting of the game decided (location, period of history of the ruins, etc) upon? For example, does the gist main story come first then a suitable location found, or is it the other way round? And is where the game has previously been set effect the decision making process?

2) How much does "real world" research (actual history, geography, etc) goes into the designing, writing and story of the game (whether it is the main quest/McGuffin, artefacts/documents, environments etc), and is it a challenge to keep it entertaining?

Hi everyone. Check out your answers below, answered by Game Director, Brian Horton!

Brian Horton (Game Director): We’re balancing ammo placements throughout the game as we develop, so we try to find the right balance of where to put ammo boxes. We’ve tended to stray away from dedicated ammo boxes and we’re relying more on enemies dropping ammo. So if you search an enemy you’ve killed, you can get more ammo that way, more often. We’re also balancing all the different modes, as ammo scarcity becomes a factor and you get less ammo as you move into the hard modes. [From official forum Q&A session #22 (April 2015)]

Brian Horton (Game Director): The model you’re seeing in Rise of the Tomb Raider is completely brand new, built from the ground up. We haven’t utilized anything from Definitive Edition or Tomb Raider 2013, but we’ve evolved from those as a foundation. We did early prototypes of the Definitive Edition model and reconstructed a new character model with Kam Yu as our Principal Character Artist. It definitely has upgraded tremendously - everything from its surface quality to materials to the way the facial animation works. We have a brand new facial animation system driving her facial breakages. We’re going to do a full “Making of Lara” feature in the future and we will go into a lot of details on every aspect of her character creation. [From official forum Q&A session #22 (April 2015)]

Brian Horton (Game Director): We debuted two outfits so far - one is her Alpine Outfit and the other is the improvised jacket that she wears. There’s going to be multiple outfits that you will see throughout the story adventure, and that you will be able to choose after you acquire them. [From official forum Q&A session #22 (April 2015)]

Brian Horton (Game Director): The game will play very much the same, as we’re going to maximize the most we can out of the 360.

As for the second question, with three times the size for a hub, we had to increase the challenges, collectibles, and rewards that you would get from exploring those hubs. You’re going to be able to do a whole lot more in a hub space.

Hubs will also be the house for our challenge tombs – which we had in 2013 – and some of them are extremely difficult to find unless you go off the beaten path. In general they are going to be more plentiful, and I can’t wait for you guys to play them because they’re super, super cool. [From official forum Q&A session #22 (April 2015)]

Brian Horton (Game Director): We get code updates from them often and do evaluations. It’s amazing how much they’re able to keep up with our development. They’re right behind us on the way we’ve developed the game. It’s something I’ve witnessed, and I’m amazed at what they’re able to accomplish on the 360. [From official forum Q&A session #22 (April 2015)]

Lara is rich, she just doesn't have access to her money at this point in the story.

If you'd like to see the mansion back, I recommend chiming in on the dedicated thread here to let the devs know how you feel about the mansion - http://forums.eu.square-enix.com/showthread.php?t=140044 :)

Whilst this is true, it's not like he can say "I cant wait for you Xbox guys to play it day one while others have to wait, mwahahaha". Can you imagine how that would go down? :p. His statement could also be in interpreted as meaning, "I can't wait for [all] you guys to play it [even if some have to sadly wait a little longer] *wink wink hint hint".
