View Full Version : Bring US Classics to the EU Playstation Store!

Back in the 90s the world was unfortunately not as global as it is today. Many games from both Square and Enix, never reached Europe. As such, there are plenty of classic PS1 games that Europeans never had any chance to play, and I would absolutely love to see them in the PS1 import section of the European PlayStationŽStore.

Especially these games are the ones I'm thinking of, I'm sure that those who played these agree that they are classics in every sense of a world, and deserve to reach a larger audience.

Brave Fencer Musashi (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brave_Fencer_Musashi)
Chrono Cross (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chrono_Cross)
Final Fantasy Tactics (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Final_Fantasy_Tactics)
Legend of Mana (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legend_of_Mana)
Threads of Fate (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Threads_of_Fate)
Valkyrie Profile (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valkyrie_Profile)
Xenogears (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xenogears)

It would be quite awesome to be able to buy Chrono Cross :)

EDIT: There now been 4 years since Sony introduced US PS1 games on the European Playstation Store (http://blog.eu.playstation.com/2011/08/01/ntsc-j-and-ntsc-u-psone-classics-confirmed-for-scee/), and Square-Enix still haven't made a move. Considering how many PS1 games Square-Enix have that never been released in Europe, why not!? Much smaller companies been able to do it over the years, so a giant like Square-Enix should have no troubles doing the same.

So I realized my PSN account has money just gathering dust and I figured I'd buy some PS1 Classics. Final Fantasy games are top of my list, but I wanna grab XenoGears and maybe some others.

But I was wondering if anyone whose played any of those PS1 games on their PSPs had any issues?

Like, I remember talking to someone who bought FFVIII for their PSP, and they were telling me how they couldn't figure out how to run from battle since the controls for that was L2 and R2. The PSP only has one L and one R button. Is this something to worry about, or is there a way around this?

Are there any games I shouldn't buy at all if I plan to only use for my PSP and not having a standard PS controller? My PS3 is pretty low on memory, so I would be putting these games on my PSP memory cards right away. I need to know they are playable on a PSP without issue.

Help is appreciated!

The other two shoulder buttons that would have appeared on a Playstation controller are mapped to the PSP analog stick. You should be able to go over the configs by accessing the PS button menu when you have the game booted up.

I believe I was pretty thorough, but please tell me if I missed any!

You missed several PS1 Classics for US PSN. Legend of Mana, Threads of Fate and Front Mission 3. The selection of Square-Enix PS1 games on EU PSN is unfortunately very poor, there are several games I want to see there. Even made a thread about it (/go/thread/view/139231/29204479/European_PlayStationŽStore).

Note that I deliberately skipped all Eidos titles, and I wasn't sure about Kane and Lynch so I went ahead and added them.

Not only Kane and Lynch are from Eidos, but Deus Ex: Human Revolution too (it was developed by Eidos Montreal).

Just edited the OP, thanks for the fixes, please let me know if I missed any more. I had to do the PS1 Classics from memory after reading a list of Squaresoft PS1 games since for some reason it says Sony made all PS1 (and 2) Classics, so to check you have to open them up and read all of the copyright material. Also, since the PS3 isn't region locked, wouldn't it be possible for you to set up a US PSN account and pay with PayPal for the downloads you want? It'd be a bit of a hassle but for games like Chrono Cross it'd be worth it IMO.*

Add to that these games:

<ul>
3D Baseball (developed by Crystal Dynamics)
Bushido Blade 2
Bust a Groove 2
Dragon Quest VII (released as "Dragon Warrior VII")
Einhänder
Chrono Trigger
Parasite Eve
SaGa Frontier
And how about them Japanese imports:

<ul>
Front Mission Alternative
Front Mission First
Front Mission Second
Tobal 2
Question: Should we ask about the possibility od PS2 imports here or should we make a separate thread for that?

I thoroughly agree with all of the above! I would buy all of these day one as I feel like I've been waiting for most of my life for them to be realsed!

How about adding Busta-Groove & Chocobo Dungeon (all sequals and spin offs included).... The list goes on and on, let me know when we start up a PS2 thread

PLEASE SQUARE ENIX HEAR YOUR CUSTOMERS AND FANS!

I would love to see both Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross. I would love the updated version of Chrono Trigger that has all the new features that the DS version had. What about making them again for the PS3 and putting them in the store as a double pack rather than just porting over the PSone discs?

I would love to see Dragon Quest VIII and Final Fantasy XII as well.*

Hi. I was a big fan of Crisis Core when I played it on my PSP in 2008. It was the first game I bought for my PSP and the first and only Final Fantasy title I played. I fell in love with the world, the characters and the fast-paced combat. I didn't play BBS but I heard it's even better than Crisis Core, the best PSP game IMO. I recently learned that due to licensing problems, both of these games couldn't be released on PSN for Vita owners who don't have PSPs to enjoy. This is why I think I wouldn't be the only one who'd love for SE to remaster those titles for Vita and add dual analog support, HD graphics, etc. I think it could be a very successful move since SE said that they've been making profit on handheld game sales and it could help Vita sales a lot.

Doesn't S-E have a Euro branch? Shouldn't they be the ones to do this, and not the NA one?

And a possible alternate would be to buy the US PSN cards and simply buy the US games. Making a US psn account isn't too hard, and as long as you have a separate memory card, they are playable on your PSP. I've bought a couple of games from the EU PSN store and play them on my PSP. EU games are usually cheaper, even after conversion rates, lol.

Yeah, they do, but the Euro branch doesn't have any forum. Although I guess another way to do it would be to make comments on their blog (http://eu.square-enix.com/en/blog) and to*write on their Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/SquareEnix).

This has been bugging me for a while. Obviously, Square Enix neglecting to dole out certain games is a fairly... far-reaching issue, I find it particularly annoying with regard to Sony's handhelds--specifically the Playstation Portable, and more pertinently, the Playstation Vita.

Square Enix has published some of the best RPGs *on the PSP. The Anniversary remakes of the first two Final Fantasy games, as well as the remakes of Star Ocean (First Departure and Second Evolution) spring most immediately to mind. If you own a PSP, you can maybe find a copy of either of those games on UMD--a dead format--used. No money for Square Enix there. If you want a digital copy, you can pirate it--again, no money for Square Enix there.

And Vita gamers are completely out of luck both ways.

I have money. Square Enix likes money. Why won't they take my money? It's even more painful in the case of the Final Fantasy titles, as both are available digitally in the Japanese and European PSN stores. But what about North America? Why don't we get those games? What possible reason does Square Enix have for refusing us even the opportunity to rake in more money?

WHY?*

Rant start

The other day i was playing a mmorpg and i introduced a kid to our guild, he was very polite and he just started as a gamer, despite being nearly 20, well i say kid but im 25. Thing is this guy was just starting out with rpgs and the like, and we got it on talking about what games we thought were epic, half the games i mentioned he didnt know and he started taking notes so he could buy the games later and play them, as the day grew into the night while talking, it was unavoidable that he had to leave, then he said he was looking fordward to tomorrow and to talk more about the games he should buy (he got pretty hooked into all the trailers of the games new and old that i told him about), so me, being the big gamer that i am (15 years and going, with every single console portable or not out there, n an epic pc rig lol) proposed to make a txt file for him with all my "must play games" while he was offline so he wouldnt need to take notes (man was the guy rpg ballistic, he knew some good titles but he's been a gamer only for 2 years, he knows nothing yet :P).

So while i was coming up with my list. I racked up about 50+ game titles (lol yeah ikr but i played over 5K games i think so they are all the best of the best), i was all good and thinking the list was over, but then i remembered a game whose title i couldnt recall.... it took me like 20 minutes to google it and it was damn worth it, hell i didnt even knew Square Enix liked the game so much that it made so many remakes of it, but acording to wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SaGa_Frontier#Reception) it was so epic that it was remade a few times and it was quite well received and loved in bot NA and Europe. It simply made the top 5 of my list in no time after i remembered it and tried comparing it to other great rpgs etc.

Rant end

Please revive this epic IP. You know its got the potential to resurrect itself, even if you dont continue the IP remaking it for the PSN cant be that hard and it is definitely something that people will buy when they see it on the PSN news.

The game is truly an epic, this is copy pasted from its gameplay section in wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SaGa_Frontier#Gameplay) but this part is the best part i loved from the gameplay of the series.

"Each character has his or her own storyline and a main quest to fulfill, but there are also several optional quests that any of the characters can participate in. Some of the main characters even encounter each other during their quests. The storyline of each character also changes depending on who is chosen, what is said in conversation, what events have already occurred, and who the protagonist has in his or her party, a concept first introduced in Romancing SaGa 2. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SaGa_Frontier#cite_note-Interview-3)"

Honestly i have no idea how IGN could trash SaGa Frontier 2 for having a bad replay value, that is the worst mistake they made ever, its got epic replay value if you like the game, and the game is epic in and of itself. It has everything that new rpgs promise nowadays, it might not be a sandbox game like the elder scrolls games but this is definitely not linear, and the world is huge and mutates with every choice you make, the storytelling is FIT for a Square Enix game, it was one of the first games that made me think FF7 wasnt the only epic RPG out there. And the music being bad? seriously IGN didnt play the game.

Seriously SE, why u no make PSN SaGa Frontier 2? (i want 2, u can make 1 if u want but i want 2 please :D)

Even though the graphics are, like, 95% the same as the original console version, there are games that are more than mere ports.

I know Persona 1 and 2:IS and 2:EP had some enchancements and tweaks.

FFT:WotL had some additional characters, jobs and I believe extra dungeons added.

FFIII of course added some multimedia bonuses.

FFIV for PSP did actually have enhanced graphics despite still being 2D and a whole extra game story added onto, plus the usual multimedia stuff.

I believe FF5-9 were the regular ol' ports. Also Vagrant Story and I believe XenoGears.

Im sorry Ive never played BBS but I doubt any PSP game could be better than Crisis Core I'll try it though. Its ironic that I bought a 150$ PSP so I could play an 8$ game. But definetly worth it.

I see that this thread is still here, which is nice, but it's also rather depressing there been no word from Square-Enix Europe about this at all. It's like they are suits instead of gamers who aren't aware of what gems they have in their possession, very frustrating. There are lots of people who wants to see a release of especially Chrono Cross and Xenogears here, but also other games too like Threads of Fate.

Square-Enix/Final Fantasy sales seem to happen twice a year or so, so just wait a while.

Last week Konami released Suikoden III on the European Playstation Store (https://www.facebook.com/KonamiUK/photos/a.426940497353145.87805.356144437766085/861190667261457/?type=1&fref=nf). What's remarkable about this is that this PS2 game was never released in Europe back in the PS2 days, this was the first time it was released in Europe. Sure, it was 13 years after the Japanese and North American release, but it finally happened.

Sure would be nice if Square-Enix did the same with all their PS1 games that never been released in Europe and released them on the European Playstation Store, like Chrono Cross, Legend of Mana, Threads of Fate, Xenogears and more!

There now been 4 years since Sony introduced US PS1 games on the European Playstation Store (http://blog.eu.playstation.com/2011/08/01/ntsc-j-and-ntsc-u-psone-classics-confirmed-for-scee/), and Square-Enix still haven't made a move. Considering how many PS1 games Square-Enix have that never been released in Europe, why not!? Much smaller companies been able to do it over the years, so a giant like Square-Enix should have no troubles doing the same.

PS. Especially odd that Legend of Mana was never released in Europe considering the title song is sung in swedish.

This seems such an easy way to get lots of new content out to new people without masses of work so seems worth it.
