— THE OFFICIAL COMMUNITY CHALLENGES THREAD —

Hello and welcome to the Official Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris Community Challenges thread!

As a community centered feature of the new game, I figured it would be a great way to show our support by creating an ever ongoing thread where every Community Challenge is logged and tracked to some extent.

This was first spoken off during Scot Amos' AMA (http://forums.eu.square-enix.com/showthread.php?t=18023) here on the official Square Enix Forums. The challenges usually last for a week each, so every player has to work towards a common goal to earn special rewards. Some challenges may be repeated at varied intervals, so both day one players and late adopters may have a chance to participate.

Whenever a challenge criteria is met, players can head to the Community Chest in front of the Osiris Shrine to claim their shiny new loot. Be sure to check it regularly, as the rewards are only available up to 72 hours after the challenge deadline.

http://abload.de/img/communitychestgkawm.jpg

You can keep track of the community progress towards ongoing events via the "Community" screen in the Pause menu. Also worth noting: Meagan has confirmed that while the challenges are the same across all three platforms, each platform has to achieve the goal separately. This post will be updated every time a challenge ends and/or a new challenge begins, so check back often and make sure you participate - the main rule, as always, is to have a good time! :)

I keep an eye out for updates on the Steam version on a nearly daily basis, but as of mid April have also been checking in on the PS4 whenever possible. Very special thanks for our forumite LadyLC (http://forums.eu.square-enix.com/member.php?u=189230) for keeping us up to speed with statuses from the Xbox community. :)

As the timing coincides with the free release via PlayStation Plus, I'll be referring to PSN version requirements on this list.

— RELEVANT Q&A —

Q: Can you share a few details about community-centric features in LCTOO? In particular the community chest?
A: Since we have such an active and awesome community we've added a new "Community Challenges" system to LCTOO. As often as weekly once the game launches, we'll put up challenges ranging from gather a certain amount of things to kill a certain number of a specific enemy type with specific weapons that everyone who's playing contributes to as they play! In this way, the community as a whole is working towards a reward that everyone gets to share in - such as gems or gear/weapon unlocks. IF the community succeeds at the challenge in the given timeframe, then they can each go to a special gold-chest in the center of the overworld we call the Community Chest where they can claim their hard earned prize! These challenges will ebb and flow as players join the game so we can tailor the challenges... and even unlock a few surprise challenges and custom events long after the game first comes out!

Q: Just wondering if these community rewards will be available for "late adopters" of the game, or if you have to be there within the given timeframe to retrieve yours? I understand there's only one chest and everytime a new reward is achieved, it's loot gets replaced, so people who play the game often will get more unique items?
A: That's a great point... some events only last for a few days, for example, and similarly their reward may only be available for a limited time to collect; then it's hidden away again. Other challenges may go on for weeks and once accomplished, their reward is ever-present so anyone can collect it whenever they join into the game down the road. In general, we want to have the reward tied to the event/challenge where possible so active players who are contributing to the community can get the reward quickly; but we also want to give everyone a chance to share in the events and rewards. Some events we will run multiple times at varying intervals so it may be one week in January, then off; then on again in February, etc.

Q: How long will you be running Community Challenges?
A: We've got one Community Challenge scheduled a week for the foreseeable future. We'll keep them running as long as the demand for them lasts!

Q: Does LCTOO Community Challenge progress update instantly? Or is there a delay?
A: There is a delay time on refreshing due to high server loads. This accounts for periods when progress makes a large jump at once.

Q: Do Steam players' efforts count toward the Community Challenges if our save files are stored locally, rather than on the Steam cloud servers?
A: The Steam player's contributions are counting regardless of whether it's a local or a cloud save. The only thing that matters is whether the user was connected to the internet when they were playing so that the information makes it to the server.

Q: Are Community Challenges platform-specific?
A: Yes, each platform must unlock community challenges individually.

Q: If a Community Challenge isn't successful, will the item be offered again in the future?
A: Yes! We'll make sure to offer a second chance at items should a goal not be reached.

It's a community challenge. Meaning, everyone who kills a scarab with a bomb will add up to the total. If we reach the 1mil mark by the deadline, everyone can then proceed to collect the reward in the chest in front the Osiris shrine. :)

Well, I don't know how it happened but we've reached the 1 million mark on the Steam version lol. Yesterday it was at 5% when I stopped playing, so I'm guessing some people have been busy. The combat challenges were good places to boost this - I myself might have bombed about 500 of them just yesterday.

This thread is a great idea!

To clarify, the challenges are the same across all three platforms, but each platform has to achieve it separately.

In regards to the PC challenge - unfortunately it looks like someone’s trying to spoil our fun. A member of the PC community hacked their profile to show them bombing 1,000,000 scarabs to bits, pushing the platform past the finish line for the “Bomb Voyage” challenge. While all three platforms are doing pretty well this week, it’s quite obvious that this number didn’t happen organically. We’re working on a fix that will ignore numbers from individual contributors that are extraordinarily outside the norm to keep this from happening again! That being said, we’re not going to take back the reward this week – so enjoy!

Aha - that does make sense! I figured something was wrong, I mean, I know not many people would have had it right from launch day, but that was an incredible figure to be reached within such a short time. By the way, is there any way we can keep track on how we as individual players are doing on each challenge? How much we have contributed ourselves, I mean.

Thanks for the update Meagan! :)

There isn't an individual contribution tracker unfortunately. Just a group one for the community!

I have 2 questions:

1) I missed the first CC, will I be able to get the reward item later?

2) In the community panel the score still shows 8% for this week's challenge, but I have been killing creatures for 2-3 hours with the chaingun. I'm guessing it's not refreshing every hour only per 12-24 hours?

Heartwire

Well this is the easiest community challenge we had so far.
Kill 200,000 enemies with the chaingun.
Practically every open world Challenge (the pillars) can be done for this, though I stil prefer the one I used for farming gems, due to the enemies spawning close together.
I'm not that happy with the reward though.
I already have every item and ~8000 gems at the moment.
But perhaps it will come in handy if they add more loot to the chests.

1) Probably not, I actually missed the first one somehow.

2) It's not updated live, so it goes in intervals of I think either 12 or 24 hours.

My big question is when does my game upload my progress for the challenge? Is it part of the autosave? Do I need to join an online co-op? Does only co-op progress count?

As I mentioned, we didn't think it fair to punish the community, so we left the challenge as achieved and fixed it so it can't be hacked again.

We'll put many of the items up again in the future, yes. And there is a delay time on refreshing due to high server loads and so on. That can account for periods when it makes a large jump in progress. :)

As I was doing my daily grind of Chaingun kills (still at 26%... don't think we'll make it tbh), I noticed details for a fourth challenge have appeared! Looks like we'll be killing Set 1000 times in the forthcoming days - for even more gems. lol (I already have like 25k to spare)

But I think there's more to it... the way I see, by reaching the goal we'll also unlock something called Battle Arena Event. Hm...

Yeah I'm grinding 1-2 hours daily as well (28% now). I think most people play LCTOO on consoles so we have a tougher time completing these challenges. Combine that with Xmas and I think we should get a 1 week extension (*winks at CD)

That other challenge might be the first weekend one they were talking about. It is opening in 10 minutes :) I'm already set to kill Set a couple of times today :P

EDIT: Yes it's live, and I just realized that if you don't care about Set you can actually farm much more minions than with the obelisk challenges.

We can hope they add a whole new batch of loot items in the future, though I don't see it happening. Plus, even if they did, you and I would probably get them all in one go anyway lol.

I've shifted my focus to Set, the requirement isn't as steep and considering the progress we've made so far I'm optimistic about it. Good thing we're not going to lose any critical item by failing the Chaingun challenge. :\

- 200k Chaingun kills challenge extended until the first of January. We're likely to succeed with the extra five days.
- 1k Set kills will also earn us an additional remixed track in the official soundtrack. At 65% with five days to go, things are looking good. :D

Four days in (and only three left to go), the Steam community has only achieved 35% completion of 1500 kills... We're going to bomb this challenge so hard it's not even going to be funny. :(

I've been doing quick daily grinds killing Osiris 10-15 times per session, like three or four sessions a day, and considering it takes two minutes tops to defeat him, I was sure we were going to get this new amulet. Then Steam tells me there are 500+ people playing the game right now, so it was more than certainly doable, so in a way I do think we don't deserve it. :\

This triggered an idea in my mind though... what if a future update would include some sort of ingame shop to purchase items the community fails to achieve? Read my pitch. I have 100k gems to spare and this number keeps growing as I am doing my part... considering everybody else obviously is not as intent as I am in getting it, I would gladly spent 20k, 30k gems to purchase this item, just for the sake of having it.

I would still have been rewarded for having done my share of the work and it would give me additional incentive to keep playing and stocking gems for future instances we come to fail.

1 million scarabs on launch week might have been a tad too many, but every other community challenge requisites have been very grounded to the installed user base (like I said, 500 people in game right now, how come in a whole week the community can't defeat a sub 2-min boss 1500 times? - If each of these 500 individuals set off to kill Osiris, we could complete this challenge in 5 minutes. 5 minutes.)... so it makes me so sad that our outcome is this deppressing...

Yes, I know we still have three days to go, but by now we should be at 60%+, at least. I suppose asking for a time extension would be an easier alternative, but it would still require the whole community to come together instead of just a handful players.

It doesn't even have to be structured like a "shop" with menus and the like. Just throw in a 25k~ Chest in the overworld with this item when the challenge fails... it could be there only for the original 24-hour period so only those people who'd been doing their part would be sure to get it.

f4c3m4n
8th Jan 2015, 16:03
I agree with Treeble in everything he said. I think Meagan said that in some way the missed rewards will be offered again. Maybe they also thought about some kind of shop in form of an ancient egyptian shopkeeper who only accepts those gems we gather :D

By the way my time of killing the puppet Osiris is around 1 min 15 sec and I'm repeating it quite a lot, although I am not counting exactly how many times a day.

Besides having fewer players than on consoles I feel like the Community Events are not advertised enough in the game menu. They should be highlighted in the Main menu in some way. I felt like the Chaingun event was probably missed cause you actually needed to get the chaingun first, and the people who only bought the game during the Xmas sale have not even gotten there yet. So only a dozen of people killed minions with the proper gun, hence the failed event.

UPDATE: Okay I clocked my time cause I was curious exactly how well I was doing and it's averageing between 45-50 sec :D Funniest bit is when you leave minions alive after killing the puppet and they just try to casually leave the arena like it's just another monday at work :D

Well, we failed Set's Osiris Puppet challenge... 48%. :(

But this week we're already being offered the second chance to get Set's Silver Flail. This time we have to kill 75,000 ice enemies with the Flamethrower. Doesn't seem too bad, but I'm still trying to find a good place to farm this type of enemies. It seems every combat challenge spawns a rather large number of fire enemies, but only a handful of ice ones.

Can't help but compare this to challenge #2... we had to kill 5,000 fire mummies for a gold weapon. Now, 75,000 for an amulet does seem slightly too many. D: I'll be on the lookout for a cheap farming spot.

11th Jan 2015, 17:08
I set the weather to frosty and went around all 5 combat challenges. None of them seems to be a good way to farm unfortunately.

Sunken temple of Sobek challenge - few (5-8) ice crocodiles - pity you can't kill them with flamthower

Shrine of Osiris challenge - few (5-6) ice skeletons/ice scarabs

Khepri Amphitheatre challenge - few (5-8) ice skeletons

Waterfall of Sobek challenge - few (5-8) ice crocs/scarabs

Cliffside challenge (the one with the golden spheres that spawn enemies) - few ice scarabs, although this one is tricky

It might worth trying to close the other 3 spheres, and let the scarab one open to infinitely spawn them and see how many icy ones come. I will get back to this as I think I might have damaged the spheres with my flamethower or maybe they do not have infinite scarab population.

Treeble
11th Jan 2015, 17:34
Yeah, Cliffiside seems to be the way to go. Still more fire scarabs than ice ones, but at least it's something. I've seen some arrow skeletons as well, but they take 1/3 of the ammo bar to finally die.

^ Well, if they were easy tasks, they wouldn't be challenges ;)

None of them has been exactly easy this far - except for the very first one which someone hacked lol. Like I said in the wall of text a couple of posts up, if everyone who's playing came together these requirements would be met within a day or two, but it's not what's happening.

I tried the new one first thing Sunday morning, and by the end of day, we went from 1% to 3%. There may be hope :p

To be honest, I didn't quite understand what the Community Challenges were until I came across this thread. When I saw the first one, I thought I had to kill a million scarabs on my own! Daft, I know, but that's how my brain was working :o

I have been letting others know it's a group effort, because I'm pretty sure I wasn't the only one who thought these were individual goals. It's a bit difficult, however I have been broadcasting on Twitch so that others who are interested in the game understand the reason of the challenges. Hopefully it'll encourage others to contribute as well :)

Hey there!

FYI, there was a brief error in the description for this week's challenge - it's for Bronze Set's Ice Flail, not Set's Silver Flail. That being said, we'll give you guys another shot at the Silver Flail soon!

Also, we're working to find the sweet-spot with these challenges so they are the right balance of requiring effort but not being unobtainable by each platform community. We think we're nearly there. :)

Meagan, I saw that you guys just announced that the icy tomb dlc is coming this week. I'm guessing it will be full of icy creatures so that will surely help us getting this challenge done.

I went back to the cliffside challenge and now I can confirm that even if I don't damage the spheres, they expire after a copule of minutes. Anyway, only a few icy scarabs spawn come from it so it's definitely not a good farm spot.

Among the possibilities it still seems to be the best though. I'm not even seeing what kind of scarabs I'm killing anymore as I kill them before they even get out of the ball, but considering the Steam community made 14% progress in two days (that's about just over 10,000 registered kills!), it might be ammounting to something. :)

(or there are other people doing it right and I'm just piggybacking on their efforts :p)

Also, someone has brought something to my attention. If we *freeze* the enemies (with icy-enchanted weapons or even enfrost amulets) before killing them with the flamethrower, will they still count towards the challenge total? Could you please enlighten us, Meagan? :D

The element of baddies actually mostly depends on the weather state. So you'll get the most during the day time while snowing. If it's night and snowing you'll split bad guys between fire and ice elements. The weather effects all enemies both in the Overworld and Tombs, so you don't have to grind it out in the actual snow. :)

Third round of marks in Tomb of Set, countless enemies and when you need ammo, just close one of the marks and stay close to it to regen some. We must have killed around 200~ ice enemies in about 30-ish minutes!

Not sure what the count would be in single player, but spread the word. We can do this!

I guess if you're just picking up the game it is terrific and it might be alright on consoles if there was a way to have additional game saves and a distinction between new game/new game plus and I could go this week with a save where I don't have all the stuff from chests yet.

To answer your question, you've done the first step by activating Community Events, so you're good to go. You're correct, the second obelisk in Khepri's Amphitheatre was for the Double Date challenge (and previously Pulling The Strings back in January), but since the challenge has ended, there is only one obelisk now. But you're still ok to try any of the obelisks throughout the map. The challenge also works in the Tombs, so for this week's challenge, using the Railgun on any enemy will count towards the final count. You can do it single player or co-op, doesn't matter.

The Steam community failed House Cleaning, unsurprisingly, at 49%. I'm impressed we even made to almost 50k kills anyway. The new challenge isn't live yet, hoping it's not as big a grind.

What a coincidence, Xbox also got 49%! Spooky

Hi Protege. First off, welcome to the SE forums

If you'd like to team up, I'm always happy to play co-op online - my Xbox GT is xx LadyLC xx, so feel free to look me up :D

Good luck :thumb:

Hi LadyLC

Thanks for the clarification. I realise now that in general I got the wrong idea about accessing community challenges from what I read on tombraiders.net. I don't have an XBOX One Live Gold subscription so can't play co-op online but thanks for the invitation anyway. I also don't have the Railgun yet.

Best of luck in the challenge.

I'll drop Stella a note so she can rewrite that bit. She links back to this forum thread, so I can only hope the opening post would clear any doubts you might have had. I'll be doing some minor tweaks over the next few days so I'll take that chance to revise it as well.

The challenges usually run for the whole week, so there may still be time for you to take part. The Railgun is a reward for completing a challenge in Tomb of the Torturer (also, from the little I've used it it seems to be a one-hitter, despite the slow rate of fire). Worth noting that you can still collect the spoils once the challenge is beaten. :)

The new challenge has already been met by Xbox players! 60,000 crocodile kills with a rocket launcher and it was completed within a few hours. Giant sack of gems again, though. I'm just glad I didn't have to witness the challenge taking place. So many people are quite reckless with the rocket and grenade launchers, I doubt if anybody came out unscathed!

I think it's helped that the game and DLC went on sale for £8 (UK) recently - lots of online players at the mo. I even managed to get all but my last achievement (couch party) which I don't mind :group_hug:

Well, to test it I went to Set's tomb and sure enough, all that came out of the orb were the mummies with scythes. The challenge always highlights the 'correct' enemy in this replay, so I figured I was on my way to helping the challenge. Only thing is, after 30 minutes continuous play of the first wave and over 200,000 points, it didn't register on the percentage one bit which stayed at 20% for a couple more days.

This was first spoken off during Scot Amos' AMA (http://forums.eu.square-enix.com/showthread.php?t=18023) here at the official Square Enix Forums. The challenges last for a week each, so the players definitely have to work towards a common goal to earn special rewards.

Also worth noting, Meagan has confirmed that while the challenges are the same across all three platforms, the users in each platform have to achieve the goal separately.

That being said, the primary platform for this thread is PC (Steam). If a PS4 or Xbox One player is OCD enough to help me out keeping track of successful or otherwise events, I'll be happy to include the relevant info in the chart below. This post will be updated every time a challenge ends and/or a new challenge begins, so check back often and make sure you participate - the main rule, as always, is to have a good time! :)

Relevant Q&A:

Also, Meagan has posted on the official blog that all three platforms have beaten the previous challenge. I already had the Gold SMG on Steam, but now also have it on PS4. :)Yep, it was at 86% on Thursday for Xbox, so I'm assuming we had it in the bag by Friday night. Funny thing, the challenge only just ended some hours ago, a break from the regular Sunday-Sunday pattern.

My PS4 still hasn't been installed, but will try to get that sorted quick so that I can help on that platform. Xbox players are so gung-ho, I hardly even have to contribute sometimes! :p

Thanks! :) As we had two repeats in a row I figured there'll be more down the line so I streamlined it a bit to avoid repeating images and making an unnecessarily long chart. It also looks less cluttered IMO, while bringing the current activity to the very top instead of the end of the list.

Looks like they have left a few challenges lined up in advance -- up next is a repeat of Pharaoh's Funeral for 1000 Gems.

Xbox failed miserably on the last challenge - 55%!

Personally I know I had trouble finding any of the lightning Crocodile priests - there might have been maybe 2-4 of any of the challenge areas I visited.

That was still better than Steam lol. I'm actually surprised the PS4 community pulled it off tbh, it's not a very engaging challenge and like you said, they're a bit annoying to spawn.

Deets for the next challenge are on the server: a repeat of Ride the Rail. 10k kills with the Railgun for the Gold Rifle. :D

PC failed previous challenge with 19% -- that's a new record. :p Will check PSN tonight.

Attention completionists: the upcoming challenge (starting sunday) is our second chance to snag Set's Silver Flail, the first reward we missed. The requirement is the same as then: 1500 Osiris' Puppet kills. Let's do this! :D

Despite my tryhard efforts (75 kills yesterday, 50 today), progress is moving much too slowly on Steam. I'm hopeful we can at least pledge for an additional week so we don't miss out on this particular item a second time... (darn OCDs)

As I write this, the Steam community is at 97% with a whole day left. THANK YOU if you helped, I was losing my mind doing insane two-hour grinds on a daily basis.

Anywho: next up is another repeated challenge with another reward we'd technically missed before. One with the same name already exists in game, but this could be an all-new item with different properties like two or so other items. Only one way to find out... ;)

Did you guys retrieve the silver flail without issue? Someone reported the chest had the wrong item in it, but I looked in the back end and the factor looks correct. Let me know!

I got the correct item on both Steam and PS4 versions, Meagan. Picked it up the moment it was available, in fact. :)

By the way, (not sure if you can answer but) can we expect all-new events and items further down the road? We've had repeats for a while and it's great for any late adopters, but part of me itches for something new. :o

At this point they will be repeats - we had a set number of items to give away, and we've cycled through them already. That being said, let me know what items you particularly want me to offer up again and I'll plug them in.

Thanks for the update on your award! I'm glad they went out correctly.

We haven't had any challenges since June 1st, when the pre-E3 trailer for Rise of the Tomb Raider went live... :(

Would be nice to go through all the items at least one second time though...

why implement a feature like this in the first place when you cut support a few months after release? seriously, gaming companies these days have quite the nerve. I'm really mad, and i didnt even pay for the game.

GUYS, WE'RE BACK IN BUSINESS.

Challenges should start anew this weekend. As usual, I will be doing my part — this time on the PS4 — and also will keep the topic up to speed. OP already has the deets for the upcoming challenge. :)

Very special thanks to Meagan Marie for catering to our requests! You rock, MM!

EDIT: Nevermind, just saw o.p.has been updated.

We were at 93% for ps4 when I checked before I left for work this morning. I think it's safe to say we'll have it by the end of the day. I'm not sure the counter is keeping up, and it's probably hard to do so. I marathoned it all day yesterday and it stayed at 35% for hours when I was playing. I dunno how many enemies I killed, but it had to be well over 15k.

EDIT: Yep, PS4 is at 100%.

Meagan has mentioned this before, it's not updated real time but as long as you're connected to the server while playing, the data is being submitted. Not sure how often it's refreshed on the user end, but I think it's something around every 6hs.

WinterSoldierLTE
31st Aug 2015, 23:58
Yeah I kinda figured there'd be no way to actually keep an accurate minute by minute tally. With (presumably) all the people playing at once I'd think it'd crash something. I just had a couple of moments of: "I am making a dent in this thing, right?".

WinterSoldierLTE

What's going on with the op? PS4 cleared the last 2 challenges, and the op reflected that, but now it says we didn't clear them?

Treeble
6th Sep 2015, 22:35
I haven't changed it, and it's still accurate from what I can tell. I'll update it right now as somehow the challenge that has started today (5,000 lightning crocodile priests) is already completed...

I did miss last week's challenge deadline on Steam, my ISP managed to leave me offline for nearly half the week, when I got back it was already removed from the community submenu.

EDIT/

I'm not sure what's going on tbh lol. It seems to me that the challenges are being tailored to the specific platform player pool. The PSN version has the same requirements as the challenges did in their original run (ie 5,000 croc priests), but the Steam version has lower values (in this case, 2,000 crocs only).

This is good, I think, as it's probably the last chance players have to snag these items.

Just a tip for next week's challenge, Heart of Ice. Rinse and repeat ad nauseum.

1iVskeloz-c

Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris Community Challenge #06 - Heart of Ice. Objective: Melt 75,000 ice enemies with the Flamethrower.

Farming spot: Tomb of Set. Round three, kill the mummies and don't close the marks and there you have it. More ice skeletons than you can throw a stick at. Make sure the weather in the Shrine of Osiris is set to Snow/Day.

And PS4 100%ed again. I got about 20 bouts in early this morning, then logged on later to do more and we were there! Thanks to all my fellow PS4 players, because I'd really wanted this for some reason, even tho it's only cosmetic. I suppose it's a nostalgic thing, since Big Head Mode was always a cheat code for most games back in the days of PS1...

How's Steam and Xbone coming along on these? Any word?

Treeble
25th Oct 2015, 21:00
I check Steam occasionally, progress is usually slow and most of the times it doesn't get to 100%. No idea about XBL though... I'll have to compile a list to make sure, but I think with this new challenge, we've finished a second run through all the community challenge rewards!

(also lol, no idea how that canopic jar ended up there! There was this one time a friend and I were firing rocket launchers on one another for no reason, but as far as I remember we were closer to the bridge :p)

I've no idea how it got there either. It wasn't there earlier this morning before I recorded this, and I'm not making that up. That's the first time I've seen a canopic jar of yours in a couple of months. Last one I came across was in one of the tombs in the snowy area, I forget which one. But since I got 100% I must admit I've not gone through all the tombs again.
