I'm wondering if any of you have a shelf for figures and if you do, if you have one of Lara? It doesn't have to be one from the reboot, but I noticed there are tons of different figures out there and as I've been a fan of Tomb Raider since 1996, I decided to add Lara to my shelf.

The hard part was finding one that did the face right. Initially, it was between three figures. First was the classic look with the 10th anniversary NECA figure. Next was the 9" Gameforged reboot figure. Last was the Play Arts Kai reboot figure.

It took me a month of narrowing it down with research via photos and reviews but I went with the 9" Gameforged reboot figure. Unfortunately there were no photos of the face that I could find but the profile looked really close. When I get it in the mail, I'll take some pictures and post them here.

Do you have a figure?

UPDATE: Figure is in. Pics below:

A close up of the face as that's one of the things I was looking for and couldn't find.

My full shelf:

I actually put Plexiglas Velcro'd to the front to keep my two year old out of my display items as well as keep dust off of them. It works quite well.

Certainly is - well spotted. I managed to get the entire 1st series - except for the clear editions - but then couldn't afford the following ones.

Ah, that's a shame. I can never find any good Mgs figures in stores. I always come across used ones with scratched paint. Your tr2 Lara intrigues me. I found one just like it a couple years back but turned it down because of the bent leg. Same exact bent leg as yours. Massive manufacturing defect?

Found it on Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/Tomb-Raider-Croft-Collectible-Figure/dp/B00C2NFUH6) for $20 - a fraction of what I paid for it. Gamestop has them for about $50 also, I think.

The old MGS figures are hard to find now.
I think the issue with the TR2 figure is that the legs are somewhat weak - if you place it on its side for too long it bends in that direction and stays that way. I've tried countless times to correct it, to no avail. Disappointing.

I saw that $370 one as well and wondered why it was so much. Then I saw that it was 1/4 scale. It's a pretty big statue of Lara and wouldn't have fit in my shelf anyway. I saw a $4000 one that was life size though.

I don't have my figures on display as I ran out of room, because I have books and figures of a different sort displayed.

But as far as Tomb Raider I have the Legend talking one. The Underworld on a stand, I had the Anniversary one where she's hooked to a clear stand thing but after a while one of her arms became really loose and her head actually fell off upon opening her but I kept sort of screwing it back on and eventually I gave up and had to throw it out. I also have an Angel of Darkness bobblehead which is pretty nice.

Other figures are mainly of Metal Gear Solid series stuff:

Metal Gear Solid Liquid Snake
Metal Gear Solid Meryl
Metal Gear Solid Ocelot
Metal Gear Solid 3 Big Boss Tiger Striped Camo
Metal Gear Solid 3 The Boss
Metal Gear Solid 3 Big Boss Sneaking Suit
Metal Gear Solid 4 Ninja Raiden
Metal Gear Solid 4 Old Snake standing up

I had some from Metal Gear Solid 2, but I gave them to my cousin, I regret doing that now.

I also have a Play Arts Big Boss in sneaking suit, I had a Play Arts Kaz figure but he kept falling off the shelf as I couldn't position him to where he would stay up and eventually he hit the ground too many times and his head wouldn't stay on so I had to throw him away and it sucks, because those figures are around $50.

I also have a Play Arts Daryl figure from The Walking Dead. It's the one where he comes with his orange ponch and he has his fall/winter jacket on, which also has the angel wings on it.

I'm a female gamer and can be just as into gaming and and collecting figures as guys can. :D

There's a store called The Toy Vault which sells comics, collecting cards, games and consoles and action figures old and new so that's where I get pretty much all my figures.

It's funny, but sometimes when I talk to guys and I tell them I play video games or when I buy figures I get looks like they think I'm weird or like I'm invading their territory, because they think it's for guys only. I always walk into that store with pride and don't care. I've been playing video games since the 80's since the NES days and even played my Dad's old Atari sometimes.

BTW, thanks for the support and sorry about losing your figures. It sucks, especially when you spend lots of money on them. I mean, I could buy another one but I'd rather not in case it happens again. It's too much money to risk it. I didn't much like the look of the Anniversary figure anyway, I wish they had made a plain one on a stand or something.

true, the scale is big. shame i will not have space for it. already had to leave my figurines of AC back in australia. but now we did find our own unit and would therefore have more space. maybe one day i will get it. but for now, i have to pay rent and get more important things like furniture.

It's all relative I guess. I have plenty of TR figures, to this day I still think the Playmates (circa 1998) resemble the then Lara Croft the most. I am not too fond of the two Gameforged figures myself, though I'll agree they're pretty good for their price tag.

Ot.
I don't have a lot of TR figures. Though recently I finally got the Legend figure I was looking for. My parents actually found it on their vacation. And the TR'13 figurine everyone is talking about.. believe it or not, but I bought it in a super market during my vacation in France. The one the left I got really cheap from on of my collector friends.

And this one here I, again, got in France. On a fleamarket. €3 :p

At last I can officially join the convo! Here's some pics of some of my stash. This is my full collection of TR figures so far, but not my figure collection as a whole. I had to downgrade from a house to an apartment a couple of years ago, and space is now limited so some are still boxed away. This is in the corner of my living room, on proud display. I am not ashamed of my "nerdiness", and anyone that takes one look at my apartment décor will tell you the same. It's a nerds paradise, in budding stage still...

Anyhoo, the display...

The display is a corner stand for surround sound speakers, but I thought it'd look much nicer with loads of figures on it.

The Lara's, section 1...

http://i297.photobucket.com/albums/mm209/WinterSoilder/various/P1020039.jpg (http://s297.photobucket.com/user/WinterSoilder/media/various/P1020039.jpg.html)

And since I'm finally able to share my collection with other collectors, here's the shelf-by-shelf...

Top Tier...

http://i297.photobucket.com/albums/mm209/WinterSoilder/various/P1020032.jpg (http://s297.photobucket.com/user/WinterSoilder/media/various/P1020032.jpg.html)

Tier 2...

http://i297.photobucket.com/albums/mm209/WinterSoilder/various/P1020035.jpg (http://s297.photobucket.com/user/WinterSoilder/media/various/P1020035.jpg.html)

There's a whole lot of nothing going on on the bottom tier because my dog likes to take his treats to eat them back there sometimes (Not sure why. Kind of bizarre, isn't it?) and he was always knocking whatever I put down there over.

Thank you. I wanted a corner unit made of wood with glass shelves and a mirror on the back (They've got a name, I just can't think of it atm) but all the ones I was finding at the time were very expensive.

I'd love to say the TR disc is in fact that, but I can't. I got into TR only about 5-6 years ago. It's just a 2nd copy I picked up a couple of years ago that had a booklet in great shape. The original plan was to have copies of the first 4 games framed but I haven't found any of the others with booklets that don't have rips or some other damage on them.

That's not a prototype though, my 12" Lara looks exactly like that. I don't remember seeing a prototype for the 7" version, but they seriously screwed up that one... :(

EDIT

These aren't crystal clear like Telekill's, but anyway. A comparison between the 12" and 7" Legend figures from the Player Select line and also the Underworld, from the same line, which was their best 7" Lara figure IMO (overall I'd still favor the 12" TRL I think).

Maybe instead of the manuel you can use the front cover. It's much thinner and can have the same effect. A frame usually makes even damaged items look really nice. :)

Yeah that's a good idea. I can never find old PC games tho, TR or otherwise. No game store I've been in in the last 4 years has had any games older than 2003. I figure either people just don't want to part with them, or the stores figure "Bah, I can't put this on a shelf! Who'd buy a game that can't operate on newer computers?". So I'm stuck looking for old PS1 copies. But it's alright. I already have 3 more of those frames with autographed music cd's in them, so too many more and it would just seem like "cd on the wall" overload to me. Plus I have loads of posters I still need to get frames for that I wanna hang up, so I'm trying to save wall space for those.

I would love to find some kind of shadow box I could put a Lara figure and the disc in, but I haven't found one the right size yet. They're always either too big, or too little. I say "too big" 'cos if I do go the shadow box route, I'd like a theme for it. You know, "TR 1" themed or whatever game. Maybe a bit nit picky, but I can't help it.

I'd start out by hitting up hobby shops and crafts stores. The crafts stores where I live (a chain called Michael's) will make custom sized frames, and let you pick out what color the frames are. And the cut the glass down for you so you don't have to worry about doing it yourself. They're normally pretty cheap. I think I spent maybe $20 getting a 16"x16" frame made for an autographed promo poster that I could never find a frame for. $20 may sound a bit expensive, but compared to the prices of most standard frames you'd have to buy a matte for to make something sit perfectly center in, it was a steal for me.

How many versions of reboot Lara figures are there? I only know of the bust figure, the 9" PVC one, the PlayArts Kai figure and the two gaming heads statues. Am I missing any?

As far as I know, you named 'em all. Unfortunately.

Looking good! Where'd you put the steelbook you got? :)

It's in with the games on their shelf. I've only got that and 2 other games as far as collector item games, so I don't really have a dedicated space for them yet.

Yeah, a few things. I'd like to have the Japanese versions of the 'Silent Hill' games since they seem to have different box arts from the U.S. releases, as well as a few other different regional games. It really is a "Man, wouldn't it be cool if..." thing though right now. I'm not quite ready to go out of my way to add different regional packagings to my collection yet. They're quite expensive most times. Well, for a game (or games) I've already played in a format I won't actually be able to play due to regional lockings on systems.

Plus I'm already pressed for space in my current apartment. I can't really afford to give up any more space for another bookcase, and the ones I have are pretty full up. Then again, I'm rarely there, so it wouldn't hinder me that much...

You're talking the the person who owns over 20 different copies of the Mass Effect trilogy. Including systems I don't even own. I totally get ya :)

Often it's fun to have different versions of one game cause they're fun to look at. Such as the special edition you got of TR'13. I'll keep an eye out for NTSC-J Silent Hills of you want!

I appreciate it, but I'm good. I've got loads of birthdays in the next couple of months, as well as due taxes. My shopping for fun is done for a bit. Thank you though.

Look what we spotted at preview night of SDCC – the prototype of our Play Arts KAI Rise of the Tomb Raider figure! While still a work in progress, it gives you a good idea of what to expect from the final product later this year.

I'm on my kindle, so can't post the image directly, sorry. Edit: width='200'

As for the art book, I'm looking forward to seeing landscapes, tombs and perhaps some character models, especially supernatural ones, if they exist.

What? Have they announced one? Did I miss it, or are you talking about the one for 'TR2013'?

Oh, I must've missed that. My bad. Thanks for the patience to politely point it out and not give: "What?! Are you blind or something?!"

It does look cool, indeed. My only grip is it's gonna be PlayArts again. Which is expensive. Meh.

Wowww.... looks awesome! I'd really prefer it as a statue though, and not a figure. Figure = ruining that beautiful work with joints :p

It has joints like the TR'13 one which came with the collectors edition, perhaps this one will go in a special edition of Rise? Still pricey, not as much as those resin statues.

Yeah, that's very true. A resin statue has become a sort of Grail for my TR collection. I just can't ever bring myself to drop the amount of money they want for them. Some day, tho. Some day.

I decided to pop on to eBay a bit ago just out of curiosity, and there were 3 of the life sized statues listed. 2 of them were for CORE era Lara, and one for 'Legend'. The 'Legend' one caught my eye. It's my favorite TR, so I always check out what little merch I can find for it. It has some noticeable damage, really bad in one spot, and it is still listed for over $3,000.00 usd. It's apparent it's from a private collection, not a specialty shop, but geez. And I still wanted to buy the damn thing. I've told myself over the last few years that if I'm ever going to commit that big of an amount of money on a TR life sized statue (I've been eyeing them for a long time now), it's gonna be a flawless one. No scrapes, scratches, or missing fingernails. But there I was, thinking suddenly: 'I could handle working 7 days a week, 10 hours a day for a couple of months. I could raise that cash.'. I think I have a problem, as I've worked that kind of schedule a few times before, and I physically and mentally can't handle it after more than 5 weeks. Weird how this stuff can get to you.

Anyways...

Does anyone know the story of the Life sized statues? How did they come to be? Was the marketing department sitting around one day, throwing out ideas and it just popped out of someones mouth? "Beach towel?" "No, no good. Disney's got that market by the nards." "Coffee mug?" "Meh, not everyone drinks coffee, or even tea." "I got it! Life sized statues!" "...."

Who pitched it to Eidos, and how hard was it to pitch? I'm genuinely curious here. Back in the late 90's video game merch was not as common as it is now. In fact it was downright rare. And having a custom life sized statue made can't be cheap, especially in large quantities, so there had to be some sort of resistance from Eidos to go for them.

Anyone know, or has this sort of info never been revealed and sworn to secrecy?

I get so mad when I see how expensive they are to be honest. They've only gotten more expensive too. I had an Anniversary Lara a few years ago for £10 and she got broken in storage, now I see the exact same one is worth over £100? Ugh.

I was pricing the 'Anni' figure a few weeks ago and thought the same thing. I couldn't help but think: "What?! Most TR fans don't even like that game!". The cheapest one I could find on the day was somewhere around $80 usd. Which considering what I paid for my 'Legend' Lara in Union Jack outfit figure, was a huge shock. The 'Legend' ones are older, I'd dare say more scarce due to their age (could be wrong tho), and they are always the cheapest ones that I find. Very strange how that works out.

Really? I was buying the Underworld figure for €5 from a guy in The Netherlands when I saw he had the Anniversary figure for €5 as well. But he'd made a typo (Toomb Raider or something like that), so I hadn't seen it. Unfortunately I was too late by then and he'd already sold it. Didn't know they got so pricey in the mean time :/

WinterSoldierLTE

Every time I've looked up an 'Anni' figure, yeah it's never been cheap. But I don't hit up Amazon every day, maybe once every couple of weeks. I have to keep myself away because I could easily spend a lot of money on there. And I always look at ones that are still in packaging.

AdeleDazeem
15th Jul 2015, 09:49
Ah, that sounds familiar! :D

I'm not a boxed collector. From my point of view it's 'saving it for the next buyer', plus it takes up too much space. I'm looking forward to the new Rise PlayArts though, already had my fingers crossed for it!

WinterSoldierLTE

Normally packaging or loose doesn't matter to me. But for TR merch, I like to know it's absolutely in great shape due to it's rarity. If I came across an 'Anni' figure in a store loose that I could actually pick up and inspect, I'd buy it no problem. But I've only seen TR merch for sale in an actual store 3 times, so I have to resort to online shopping to get it. And I just don't trust the conditons mentioned in the descriptions. I've found a lot of times that one persons "like new" is my "used", if that makes any sense. And it is always a letdown when I finally get home to open my mail and see this item I've been waiting anywhere from 2-6 weeks to look at is not in as good of shape as was promised.

AdeleDazeem
16th Jul 2015, 07:31
Ah, understood. :)
When it comes to used items, I always want to see the picture of the actual item I will receive and not the promo pics from Google like so many people use. At least then you're able to see: ''oh, this Lara figure is missing her ponytail!''.

Gotta get lucky when it comes to TR merchandise. You don't encounter the old stuff in the ''wild'' very often. It's actually one of my smallets sub collections due to that reason. It's also because a lot of the merchandie that you do find, doesn't always look very nice. Still looking for that Play Arts from TR9 though. Still slapping myself everyday because I didn't buy it loose for €30 last year.

Ah, I'd be kicking myself for that as well. I cracked and ordered the CE of 'TR2013' a couple of weeks back, so that should be waiting for me when I get home tomorrow morning. I'm anxious to actually get to check that figure out in person and see if it's done as well as everyone says it is. It looks great in pictures yeah, but I've seen a lot of reviews of it where people have called it the best TR figure ever. I'm curious as to if it's because of their attachment to Lara and TR2013 or if there really is something unique about it, like articulation, detailing, or whatever it may be. One thing I learned from my 'Legend' Lara figure purchase is sometimes, not always mind you, a figure looks better in a photo than it does in actuality.

I own a few Play Arts from other franchises, they're all incredibly detailed! The newer the series, the better they are. Play Arts make the face look the way they're supposed to look and you can pose them however you want. It's a shame they're so expensive and waiting doesn't really help cause they go from €80 to €200 before you can say ''oops''.

I got super lucky in France last year though. They have a GameStop-like store called Micro Mania. They had a bunch of PlayArts stored and they were on sale. Got Garrus and Ashley from the Mass Effect series for €25 a piece! Hope they have Lara this time around :D

I opened it up this morning and the face is done very well, so I get it now. The CE tin showed up with some damage to it, so that's a bummer. I'm back home now so I'm on mobile only for a few days, so it'll be a few before I can put pictures up.

Well... I forgot to take some pics of it. Basically I got it new from Square's store on Amazon (well, their alleged amazon store) and when it showed up it had been opened already and there is a fairly big dent on one side of it. Exactly why I don't like to shop online. But all the goodies were there, and it was great to listen to the soundtrack. I played it on my road trip today and it's perfect for zoning out on the road when you've driven a few hundred miles and you're just ready for the trip to be over with. I don't even remember the 45 minutes (or whatever it was) of drive time that it played. Great stuff. I was kinda shocked at how short Lara's theme ("The Tomb Raider") is tho. I expected at least two minutes and I think it clocked in around the 45 second mark.

Didn't find any good deals on my trip home. Found a "Cradle Of Life" Lara in wetsuit figure, but that's it. The store I always go to actually had some MGS2 figures, which I've always wanted, but they were in terrible shape. They were still in packaging, but they were all sun faded, Solid Snake had an arm loose, and Olga was completely in pieces inside her bubble. Putting her back together would be like doing a 3d puzzle. Who the Hell tries to sell figures in that kind of shape?
