View Full Version : Deus Ex HD Remasters?

Would anyone else like to see HD remasters of the first two Deus Ex games on 360/ps3? I love them all but it's been years since i've played them, it's a shame that Invisible war never made it onto the 360 back cat list. If they only did one i'd prefer the first one, I was quite young when I first played that and it had a massive impact on me, I would also like it if they gave it Invisible Wars ragdoll physics. Thoughts?

I've just posted this on the General Discussion thread- you might find this project interesting.

Yeah I read about that a little while ago, sounds cool and I applaud the modders effort but I want a full remaster of the original two games, with updated character models, weapons, the lot. I really hope it's something Eidos get round to, everyone is digging HD remasters at the moment anyway so it would be the perfect time and opportunity to get some new fans in as well.

Given the dated assets it would have to be a full-blown remake, probably complete with re-recorded audio (unless they have the original, full-detail recordings lying around somewhere). The original game's content just couldn't be dropped into a newer engine without an excessive amount of work, and the end result would not be anywhere near what is expected of modern AAA production quality without quite a bit of brand new work on it anyway. In short: It would be brilliant. It would also be almost a comparable undertaking to building a brand new title altogether, and since Deus Ex already exists, I'm personally in favor of Eidos Montréal doing just that. :)

Personally, I don't want SE or EM to mess with the original. It's brilliant just as it is. While updated graphics aren't unwelcome, those are already being worked on by independent modding groups.

Yeah I guess you're right. I just thought with the success of some other remasters, especially Fable Anniversary which has updated all the textures while keeping all the original content nigh on untouched, that the same could be done for Deus Ex. I wouldn't mind if they remade it altogether either though as long as they kept it faithful without screwing around with it too much. Seems unlikely though as they no doubt want to focus on newer entries in the series, which is great too.

I completely agree that the original is brilliant and can happily play it, (I had it on PS2 though and no longer have my ps2 now same with IW and my original xbox.) I'd just like to see things updated, the ragdoll physics for example. Also I read it was only the scenery textures being worked on for Revision, is there other projects focusing on character models and the like? If so I would happily get it on PC...Would still love a remaster/remake though.

Yes, HDTP (http://www.offtopicproductions.com/hdtp/) updates many of the character models.

Excellent thanks! Just bought DX off steam and downloaded HDTP, can't wait!

UPDATE-Poo...Steam version doesn't support mods, scanning forums for a fix, not great with the whole mods thing though, downloaded some Hanflig launcher but still trying to figure out how to implement it.

FURTHER UPDATE-Got it...kinda. So far only the german guy has scaled up everyone else is the same. Gonna look at it again tomorrow, getting pretty tired just now.

To be honest, I didn't follow their instructions for installing HDTP. I manually installed all the files directly in to the game directory, overwriting the originals. I also did the same with the New Vision texture mod (http://www.moddb.com/mods/new-vision), which I forgot about earlier when I mentioned HDTP.

It's also worth installing an updated OpenGL or DirectX renderer (http://www.cwdohnal.com/utglr/) for the game.

Wrong renderers. You want Kenties DX10 renderer (http://kentie.net/article/d3d10drv/), not DX9. It is a huge difference.
Pretty sure it comes bundled with New Vision anyway.

Ah I totally suck with mods...More of a console gamer and only dabbled with a few mods thus far. I don't know what lines to change and what to put where etc. I had to watch a video on youtube to put in the HDTP. Gonna try downloading this New Vision and see how I get on with that.

Additional question though...After installing the HDTP mod only the german guy has been updated and nothing else, obviously it hasn't worked properly but anyone know what might have gone wrong?

This is the youtube vid I watched that showed me how to install it, was it wrong perhaps? I did everything as it was shown on there.

Edit: here you go, click the spoiler, I modified the guide a bit for clarity. Follow this guide and you'll be setup in no time.

You'll find your Deus Ex directory in Steam\SteamApps\common folder, and that's where you want to be doing all the fiddling. It takes a while to get used to doing this stuff for mods but it's more than worth it with the right mods.

-
Getting Deus Ex mod-ready.

1. Install Deus Ex.
2. Launch Deus Ex up to the main menu. At the main menu look for the text "v1.112fm". If "v1.112fm" is NOT displayed and some other version number is then apply the Official patch v1.112fm.

Installing New Vision

A graphics mod for Deus Ex (world textures).

1. Download New Vision. Launch NewVision.exe. The installation wizard gives you options for custom launchers and renderers. It is recommended you check the boxes for Kenties DirectX 10 renderer and Kenties Launcher.
2. Install to your Deus Ex directory and click "Yes" to whatever else the wizard asks.

Optional: Now make a backup copy of the Deus Ex directory, mod ready and New Vision installed. New Vision is compatible with all other mods.

Installing HDTP

A graphics mod (objects, characters, weapons etc).

1. Download and install the HDTP demo/release 1.
2. Download and install the beta files.

Beta01: Copy HDTPPapers into DeusEx\System.
Beta02: Copy HDTPCharacters, HDTPDecos & HDTPItems into DeusEx\System and overwrite when prompted.
Beta03: Copy DeusEx.u into DeusEx\HDTP\System and overwrite when prompted. Copy HDTPAnim.utx into both DeusEx\Textures & DeusEx\HDTP\Textures for good measure. Copy HDTPBookOpen & HDTPBookClosed into DeusEx\System.

Now launch Deus Ex via the .exe found in DeusEx\System. Select "data directories" and check/tick/enable the HDTP & New Vision related boxes. In "configure", check "non-scaling GUI" and change the resolution to better suit your machine and get the most out of the graphics. Change renderer to "Direct3D 10 support" for best graphics.
Run the game and check out the great new graphics.

Now in-game, go onto the settings menu -> HDTP settings and disable the MJ12 troops as there is a bug with them that causes crashing

Here are all the necessary links:

Official patch: http://www.fileplanet.com/59470/50000/fileinfo/Deus-Ex-Patch-v1112fm (you shouldn't need this as have steam goty version).

New Vision: http://www.moddb.com/mods/new-vision/downloads/new-vision-15

HDTP release 1: http://www.offtopicproductions.com/hdtp/?page_id=3

HDTP beta files (three seperate ones): http://www.offtopicproductions.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=11566

Sigh, we need to make this process less convoluted. New vision is easy but HDTP is a pain in the ass. Someone is on the case but it's not finalized yet.

@Rossco: The guide must be started from the beginning to get it to work properly. For example, don't skip the New Vision part as the guide tells you to install kenties launcher that comes with it which makes installing HDTP a bit easier. Start from the beginning and complete every step and it should be sorted.

Excellent! Thank you very much I was beginning to feel a bit lost, haha. Gonna uninstall the version i've been fiddling with and start from scratch using your guide, will post wether I got there or not. Thanks again!

UPDATE- Hey hey! Ok so I followed your guide point by point and for the most part it seems to have worked. All textures that I can see so far are updated including all the major characters, there are some like secretaries etc that aren't but that's fine. There are a couple of amusing wee glitches I encountered; the pistol has this weird tile at the end of the barrel that seems to be comprised of hand skin layouts, also the stealth pistol is just plain not there, the hand is there but holding nothing haha, pistols so stealth it's invisible! I can live with this though I think, cheers again, I love this gem of a game!

EDIT-Ok left Unatco to go to Castle Clinton and the weapon glitches were gone, dunno if it was 'cause I restarted or what but doesn't matter. Overall i'm very happy with these mods and it has breathed some fresh life into one of my all time favourite games.

You can find the fixes to those problems in the HDTP thread: http://offtopicproductions.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=9

I assumed the beta files' primary links would have been updated to include said fixes, obviously not :/
I think I'll nag the authors, especially since my mod requires HDTP to play.

Revision has some custom textures but does not handle scenery textures, it instead revises the environments themselves. Texture work is left to projects like New Vision. http://www.dx-revision.com/website/about/faq/

Ah that's cool, like I said it seems to have sorted itself out but if it happens again i'll try those fixes. So did you make and/or contribute to making one of the mods for DX? Or did you just mean a particular mod you're using for the game requires HDTP?

Revision does sound cool, think i'll wait til it's fully done then use it for a new playthrough to keep it fresh. I love this game! Also playing through Human Rev Directors Cut on 360. Love HR too but it doesn't even touch the first one, also it kinda bums me out how the HR world looks far more futuristic despite being a prequel but that's just a personal gripe, still a great game.

http://www.moddb.com/mods/gmdx

Primarily a gameplay mod but modifies a lot of things, strives to improve the design in many ways. If you're interested you should wait for the next version, it will be released soon.

I also contributed a few levels to Revision. Neither mods are complete yet.

Good thought, but a remake.. nahh.. I think it would be better just to keep on rolling with new DX4, then DX 5, follow by DX6 and so on..

Let's not get ahead of ourselves. It wasn't that long ago that there was still a chance that "DX3" would be the last Deus Ex game ever. I'd wait and see what DX4 is like before wishing for a fifth.

Agreed.. just wishful thinking. However, with the success of DX 3 and the anticipated success of DX4, DX5 could just be quite possible. Eidos will have to give Rockstar Games a run for the money for their GTA franchise.
