View Full Version : "Real-Life" Monsters

Have you ever come across any of the monsters appearing in Square Enix's games while not actually playing them?
And, if so, did they attack you or did you end up petting them instead?
Share your encounters and sightings here in this thread.

Starting off with perhaps the most classic example:
The now extinct Chocobo
(or should I rather call it "Professor Gast's Bird"?)
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gastornis (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gastornis)

semna28.webs.com/Chocobo_Fossil_V.jpg (http://semna28.webs.com/Chocobo_Fossil_V.jpg)

Although the Chocobo may no longer exist in
this world, at least its distinctive scream lives on:

The cute little Microchu (www.sorumian.com/FinalFantasyXIII/FinalF... (http://www.sorumian.com/FinalFantasyXIII/FinalFantasyXIIIimages/monsters/levelingmonsters/Ch11Spot03/Microchu.jpg))
apparently crawled up from deep sea:

I managed to take these photos myself last year:
A Flandragora (finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Flandragora (http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Flandragora)) lurks in the mud...

Amazing creatures, are they not? And the Planet is full of them.

First: Holy moly, Chocobo skeleton O_O

That's so cool. I didn't realize the monsters were actually based of of real creature. Like, okay, some of course are pretty obvious, but that chocobo one...Whoa!

28th Aug 2012, 23:47
So cool!

Indeed. Well, that's one of the main reasons why I enjoy the games of Square Enix so much, I must say.

The Gorgonopsids featured in FFXIII were the best recreations of said synapsid I've ever seen.

Fossil: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Inostrancevia... (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Inostrancevia_alexandri.JPG)

Usually, artists simply interpret them as giant, furless rats: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Inostrancevia... (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Inostrancevia_4DB.jpg)

But SE truly managed to breathe life into this proto-doggie: finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Gorgonopsid (http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Gorgonopsid)

(Just like how the team behind Jurassic Park did a fantastic job with having the Dinosaurs move about in a relaxed and natural way.)

Hah, I could just go on and talk about this subject forever...

Speaking of "real life" Final Fantasy monsters, dinosaurs aren't the only inspirations for our favorite FF critters.

I was familiar with these particular objects before I became an FF fan. This picture is a depiction of an early Japanese doll called Haniwa. Look familiar to anyone else?

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Haniwa.png (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Haniwa.png)

These things were the very first types of Japanese dolls ever, made of clay and placed in burial mounds. The other type most are familiar with is the Dogu. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dog%C5%AB (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dog%C5%AB) These have popped up in the Okami game, as well as Pokemon. (Example: Baltoy) Don't remember seeing this type in any FF game, but then I also haven't played many of the older titles to know.

At any rate, the Haniwa type is the one that looks like something near and dear to us FF fans. Don't forget to finish it off before it escapes! XD

...And I haven't even started talking about dinosaurs yet. ^_^'

Thank you for bringing that one up, YukiTsubaki. I've always thought it's nice to see those Proto-Cactuars whenever they suddenly appear, often when you least expect them to.

I almost forgot: The Gorgonopsids, etc. of FFXIII are not the only Therapsids of the series: Nanaki and his tribe also share a similar anatomy with their broad chests and narrow hips, not to mention their crest of hair. And reminiscent of the Gorgonopsids' namesake, Seto was turned to stone during his final battle.

Wow! Pretty cool! :)

I am afraid this poor little Mu (finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Mu (http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Mu)) might not be very cool, but it is cute nonetheless:

Ever had a Geezard (finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Geezard (http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Geezard)) or a Bunyjip (finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Bunyip (http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Bunyip)) nibbling at your toes?

The Haizhe (finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Haizhe_ (http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Haizhe_(Final_Fantasy_X-2)(Final_Fantasy_X-2)) soaring through the skies...quite the marvelous sight, isn't it? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hoatzin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hoatzin)

But what's even more marvelous is the hybrid between the Achelous (finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Achelous (http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Achelous)) and the Archaeothyris (finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Archaeothyri... Wow! That's pretty cool! :D It's kind of like how Halo Reach has Moa in it, which actually used to exist. Except in this case it's Chocobos and stuff.

24th Jan 2013, 06:51
Precisely. ^_-

24th Jan 2013, 16:25
Oh yeah, we have peafowls here too :3

25th Jan 2013, 04:28
Hmm...seems like we can only write Peafowl here in the forum due to the strict censorship.

25th Jan 2013, 05:28
I just played FFIX earlier and encountered one of these:

finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Axolotl (http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Axolotl)

I always thought they looked absolutely hilarious.

25th Jan 2013, 07:38
@ Grimoire: Thanks, I didn't notice that after posting. :P Its edited now though.

@SwampLord: Lol

25th Jan 2013, 08:09
Oh, yes. Those supercute, ancient little fellows. I have always admired them.

25th Jan 2013, 10:59
I enjoy looking at the sheep-like creatures on Gran Pulse. So cute!!!!

25th Jan 2013, 13:17
Cute is the word. I often found myself following them since I was curious as to where they were going, however...they would suddenly stop, turn to face me and then just disappear! Must be some kind of special skill. Strange creatures, aren't they? By the way, their bone structure always reminds me of the (for its time) common Lystrosaurus: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lystrosaurus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lystrosaurus)

(Only their feet differ.)

25th Jan 2013, 15:18
Strange, I've never seen them teleport yet.... Next time I'm at that huge open field I'll have to find some and follow them. -curious face-

Sheep (http://images.wikia.com/finalfantasy/images/c/c5/Nautilus_Sheep_and_Hina.png)

25th Jan 2013, 15:21
Good luck. ^_-

Mhm...you could just go on looking at their pretty little faces...they are so fascinating!

25th Jan 2013, 15:48
Lol, I've actually started on my way back already, I want to see if I can activate more C'ieth Waystones now. (teleportation is really fun!)

Indeed! Fluffy and bouncy..... and they have tails ^w^

26th Jan 2013, 14:51
As well as very practical.

Long tails at that. I wonder how many Vanille has already pulled...

26th Jan 2013, 23:54
Well, I'm back from my exploit! My friend wanted to see me play XIII, so I completed my back tracking and showed her the sheep along with some of the enemies. My sister just so happened to be watching as well, so they both voted for me to fight one of those huge tortoise things.... It didn't end well. >.> After that, I went to the C'ieth stones that were active and selected one that looked like a waystone. Then, once humbaba was defeated, I checked and it was not a waystone....... *_______________________*

Lol, I could see Vanille adopting them all as pets.

27th Jan 2013, 02:50
What can I say? Pulse is a dangerous place, after all. At least you won the fight against the Humbaba (yet another Synapsid-class creature en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Synapsid (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Synapsid)). ^_-

Vanille would probably even be able to "control" the Adamantoises. Such havoc they would wreak.

27th Jan 2013, 11:00
Yeah, it was a tough class B behemoth. :P Fang ended up doing a good job distracting it for the most part though, so it was just a matter of timing on when or when not to attack.

Riding the Adamantoise would be pretty cool, but they are slow as well. If I had somewhere to get to I'd definitely choose a chocobo instead. Plus chocobo can jump, Adamantoise cannot.

25th Feb 2013, 12:25
Armadillon (finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Armadillon (http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Armadillon)), or Armadillodile as they are commonly known as: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aetosaur (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aetosaur)

And the unused Glyptodon (Sentinel, FFXIII-2): en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glyptodon (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glyptodon)

I (unfortunately) live in the south. I've had my fair share of run-ins with Cuahls finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Cuahl (http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Cuahl) We usually just stay inside when they're around. Like this little fella~ en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cougar (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cougar)

We've also been known to get the occasional visit from a Vice finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Vice_ (http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Vice_(Final_Fantasy_VII)(Final_Fantasy_VII) Otherwise known as en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Larry_the_Cable_Gu... (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Larry_the_Cable_Guy) , lol, jk about the Vice but cougars do make me think of Cuahls

24th Mar 2013, 03:15
My, you live quite the exciting life, I must say. I take it the local kitty-cats are not very petting friendly?
