CBS Films Acquires Screen Rights To Deus Ex

CBS Films announced today that they have secured the screen rights to the iconic Deus Ex videogame franchise from Square Enix. Roy Lee and Adrian Askarieh are attached to produce and John P. Middleton will serve as Executive Producer.

The Deus Ex franchise was originally introduced in June 2000. Its latest entry, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, launched to universal acclaim in 2011, ranking #1 across global sales charts and earning over 100 industry awards. Developed by Eidos-Montréal and published by Square Enix, Deus Ex: Human Revolution will serve as the primary template for the film.

Set in the near future, when dramatic advances in science, specifically human augmentation, have triggered a technological renaissance, Deus Ex: Human Revolution follows Adam Jensen, an ex-SWAT security specialist who must embrace mechanical augments in order to unravel a global conspiracy.

"As is clear from the wild success of the game, Square Enix and Eidos-Montréal know how to exceed their audience's expectations by engineering incredible worlds," said Terry Press, Co-President, CBS Films. "No one knows Human Revolution like the team that created it and we look forward to working with them from day one to make a film adaptation worthy of the Deus Ex name."

"As the millions of fans who have played the Deus Ex games for more than a decade will tell you, these games catapult you into a universe that is stimulating, engaging and relevant,” said Phil Rogers, president and chief executive officer of Square Enix Europe. “We’re firm believers in building strong partnerships and so we're thrilled to be working with CBS Films on bringing the unique Deus Ex experience to the big screen.”

Executive Vice President of Production Maria Faillace and Creative Executive Alex Ginno are overseeing the project for CBS Films.

Let's discuss this news further.

Particularly who you think should play our hero, Adam Jensen?

... and the other characters, of course!

As cliche as it is, Keanu Reeves would be the most obvious choice.

Just to get that one out of the way before some better discussion can begin.

It won't be about Adam Jensen, it will be Ben Saxon and because he's British he will be played by the ONLY choice. Rowan Atkinson.

Edit: Stephane D'astous to play Adam Jensen and to be dubbed over by Elias Toufexis.

Hmmm, I don't reckon they'll have AJ as a main character. But if they did, maybe whoever played him in this...

XXDfVpUBAwQ

Perhaps Gerad Butler as Ben Saxon, as suggested by James Swallow? :P

LOL @ Rowan Atkinson. :D

I'm going to nominate Josh Holloway as my fave so far.

@Holloway: a bit too young, but could work very well!

I agree he needs to look more weathered. But make-up and work-outs should hopefully do the trick. :D
The ability to convince us of his maturity and life experience will come down to his acting skills thereafter.

If it was about AJ surely they'd have to cast Elias.

I'd like to see JJB get cast (or at least have a cameo).

Well, Elias can act, but he certainly doesn't look the part. I'd like it if they could use his voice though.

And a cameo of JJB would be hilarious.

Agreed. :D

Anybody else think Kevin Bacon or Sam Rockwell would make a good Pritchard?

I saw someone suggest Christian Bale on the IGN comments, that seemed like a good fit to me.

Is it even confirmed the film will depict any of the events in HR, let alone feature its cast?

I hope the flick grants itself a lot of artistic liberties with the DX/HR canon. Last thing you'd want is it ending up looking like an expensive cosplay gig.

God I whish they'd go the CGI route, with Toufexis reprising his role as AJ.

^ CGI would be a good way to go. They could keep on with the graphic novel style world then.

If he were to be in the film and it was live action, I'd quite like AJ to be a relatively unknown actor.

CGI would be amazing, but it'd probably cost a bomb (or twenty thousand).

Spyhopping

Yup, it would cost A BOMB!

I'm sure the film could redeem itself a little to the less enthusiastic people here if there are one or two DX "in jokes".

One or two DX in-jokes/references sounds pretty much like HR already. :rasp:

Judging by the feel and content of HR I gather this movie project will take the franchise further away from the tone & themes of the original DX, rather than back to it. Which isn't all bad per se, but, you know, still sort of a shame.

Of course not, there isn't even a script. They just own the rights to make a film if they ever get around to it.

I could orgasm over the thought of a Square Enix CGI feature.

The Directors Cut trailer is god like.

I'm not sure who should play Adam, but the girl from Fringe makes me think of Megan Reed every time I watch that show. Anna Torv

Megan is not a large enough role for Anna Torv. She'd be wasted on a character like that. She'd be great as the main protagonist, though... the female Jensen!

I don't disagree with that, My point was I just thought it looked like Megan Reed was designed after Anna Torv the resemblance to me is uncanny.

FemJen would be pretty damn awesome.

CGI is the way to go here. No question. Take a look at the extended trailer and then multiply that by 20 times. Could be a classic. A live action DE would end up as just another mediocre video game adaptation.
